Hi everyone  


To celebrate my wife’s birthday and her recent move to the UAE, we decided to make a trip to Africa, a continent she haven’t been to. After comparing with Etihad and Ethiopian Airlines, we decide to give ET a try for a fraction of the price in Business Class. Our whole itinerary involves a total of 8 flights. This trip report will only features the first two sectors.

Johannesburg – Victoria Falls BA 733
Livingstone – Johannesburg T6 M87

ET601 departs at very early morning hours of 0435 so we arrived half awake at check-in counter in Area B of Terminal 1 of Dubai Int’l. The DNATA agent who checked us in was also half awake, she forgot to give us our baggage receipt and told us we don’t need to clear custom in Johannesburg which later was proved wrong. Anyway we were able to receive all 3 sectors boarding passes all the way to Cape Town.

Ethiopian Airlines use DCA Lounge, Dubai Airport Business Class lounge, better than the Merhaba Lounge

The lounge started serving breakfast (and finished serving dinner) at 3:30am, it actually offers quite an ample selection of food, fruit, snack and bread plus a well stocked self-serve bar.


The boarding gate 136 was surprisingly far at this quieter hour. The lounge is situated at Gate 108 so it was a 15 minutes “Moon walk” at 4am for us. Gate 136 is a remote gate build for Emirates before Terminal 3 was complete to cater the increasing traffic. Like many other departing flights, DNATA agent doesn’t manage well with crowds. There is a single long queue there. I took my wife and jumped ahead of others by showing our Cloud Nine Class boarding pass.

All passengers were held in the dark tunnel since the boarding by bus took very long time, passenger by passenger. I am very used to the chaotic scenes now.

An interesting sight with many baggage tags to all ET’s African destination on this trolley. The handling agent asked passengers who have more than 1 carry-on bags to check through their bags at the boarding gate. The bags are then tagged to their final destination with these pre-printed tags on this trolley.

Some favourite destinations from reading the tag : Brazzaville, Lagos, Juba, Luanda, Accra, Harare, Dakar, Kilimanjaro, Ouagadougou, Douala etc

All business class passengers have to wait until all Economy passengers finished boarding, then we were taken to the plane by a separate bus.

Looks brand new – barely 1 year old machine.


From onboard the 777-200LR revealed only 10 Business class passengers or so out of 34 seats in Cloud Nine this morning. The usual welcome drink (Champagne/OJ) was served then we were push back and after a long taxi, at about 4:55am we were finally airborne out of Rwy30L of Dubai heading SE direction towards Saudi Arabia, Yemen and then Ethiopia.


There was a breakfast service before landing so we took some much needed rest right after takeoff.

The seat compares well with the current Emirates Business Class seat on the B777s. It reclines into a shallow (non-deep) angle provided lie flat 180 degrees.

I woke up about one hour before landing and was given this menu for breakfast. We were about to cross the Red Sea at that time from the airmap. The IFE on ET 77L was quite impressive, with touch screen enabled for the ease of browsing.

I also managed to grab some photo with the Ethiopian girls before landing. Note there is 1 FA per flight wears traditional dress.

From the color of the ground you can tell it is dry season at the moment. We landed on Rwy 25 of Addis Ababa Bole Int’l at 7:30am. There was 1 hour time difference between Addis and Dubai.

There are 2 waves of Ethiopian planes in the hub daily, one in the morning and one at night.

We deplane by staircase, a usual practice in this region but there are also a few aerobridges.

All business class passenger board the mini bus back to terminal. It took only 30 seconds to drive but 5 mins to board. Why can’t we walk?

We have only 1 hour in transit before our next flight ET809 for Johannesburg. We visited Cloud Nine Lounge briefly.

The lounge was filled to capacity in the morning (and in the evening when we returned back from South Africa). It was practical but nothing luxury to write home about. Good amount of foods were on offer.

We use another remote gate for Johannesburg and no separate bus for Business class this time. It was an old B767-300 (used by Hainan Airlines of China and Sobelair of Belgium).

The Business Class cabin has 4 rows, with 6 seats across each row making total of 24 seats. The leather seats recline well but the leg rest don’t come up much higher for elevated support. It is also interesting to point out that ET have many different type of Business Class seat from what I can see over the pictures on internet. Many different fabrics (red, blue, brown etc) so I guess it is the luck of the draw on what you will get!

We took off on-time using Rwy07 (opposite direction to our landing). There was no breakfast service but lunch service due to start about 3 hours into the flight. (Around 11am)

The only inflight entertainment was from the small overhead screen and not many passengers were watching it. This is something ET is lacking especially their B767 flies Medium/long haul to Europe and Asia.

This time the menu selection was broader and you can select from traditional Ethiopian food such as Injera offered on the cart. You also get a choice out of 3 main Western dishes (Filet, Salmon or Ravioli Mushroom).


I tried the Ethiopian dishes and found it a bit spicy and too flavoursome but I am sure there are many lovers out there.

Starter : Vegetable Terrain. Taste just as it looks like…..can’t describe it. The Focaccia was excellent!




After a full lunch service, we were about 1 hour to land in Johannesburg. Shortly before landing, traditional Ethiopian music came to play around the whole cabin creating a relaxing atmosphere on descend into the vast land of South Africa.

We landed and arrived into gate exactly onetime at 13:10 local time. Our first portions of flights came to an end.



Conclusion:


Ethiopian Airlines was the 132nd airlines I have flown with. I didn’t overly set my expectation on them knowing that I didn’t pay much so I shouldn’t expect or ask much in return. I think ET is fair, practical and punctual. Clearly they have been benefited from the membership of Star Alliance and proud to be part of it. They’re still a long way to go to match the other world class airlines in the rest of Star Alliance. What I think their biggest asset is their African network. The connection was perfect timing wise and by far, they offer the best convenience to Africa through their hub in Addis. From a country with GDP per capita of only 300 USD per person (taken from Wikipedia), Ethiopian airlines took everyone by surprise! I look forward to their B787 soon!

Hi Sam. What a wonderful TR (as usual)!   Wow I guess I did not realise how so many flights depart DXB in the ungodly hours! I always try and get a mid morning flight out if possible. I am surprised that ET's gate was so far away! I have also used that very lounge in DXB.I do also like the new JCL on the 777. It is much nicer than the 767. I suspect we will be in for a treat with the 787. ADD appears to be a nice and very modern terminal as well. Your photos of CPT bring back so many wonderful memories of my visit there. Seriously it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. I also really liked your animal photos on the safari. The elephany appears to be having a great time in the water as well as the hippo. Very nice, good food. I wanted to try the injera, but no luck in Y! Your non-av destination photos are stunning as well, visiting Vic Falls is very high on my must-do list, one of the future visits to SA (my wife is from there, so frequent visits are required).

I too recently flew on ET in Y and was curious about the 'up front' experience on medium haul. I was generally pretty impressed with their inflight product. On the hour or so flight from Addis to Djibouti, they even had a meal service; and it wasn't bad! Next time I fly down, I think I might look into upgrade options. Thanks for posting!

It was very nice to read about your flights on ET, I'll fly them myself on their fifth freedom flight ARN-FCO in June, I'm very much looking forward to it!

wow wonderful cabin on the 77L, great hardware it seems. Love the large IFE screen and the crew's dress look awesome.
The 767 is a disgrace compared to this new product. Maybe ET should invest some money and update the 767 cabins or are they waiting till the 787 arrives?
Food look delicious too; definitely an airline which is proud to serve their country.

Great report on Ethiopian Airlines, Sam. It looks like they are a really nice airline! I love how they present their food; very stylish dishes and good looking choices ... all you need when flying in a Premium cabin!

THat's not good if you WANT to board. It's ok to wait if you are in the lounge, but not if you are just hanging around by the gate

I totally agree and think Cape Town has the nicest lifestyle around! We may try to escape the harsh summer in the Middle East to Cape Town next time. My wife was so impressed there!

Correct, now add me on the list, I raved about Cape Town. In my opinion, I think it is worth to go since you making a trip all the way down to South Africa.

I personally don't like Injera, found the meat dishes way too salty and spicy, but that's a personal preference, I think there are many Ethiopian food lover out there!

Totally agree. The B767 cabin left a lot to be desired especially on the longer flights. May be that explain why ET offer substantial lower prices in Business cabin.

Definitely miss seeing SAS. I can't wait for my 1st trip to Scandavia in Sept this year (flying SAS Paris to Oslo, then to Iceland) I have had a great flight with SAS in 1999 from LHR- x CPH - PEK with MD80/B767-300. No Airbus at that time!

Thanks. I actually read yours before I flew out that evening. Sorry I forgot to comment on it but I really enjoy it. I think your travel was very interesting and more genuine tourism to those countries such as Rwanda etc Keep up the trip reporting, even if people don't comment on it, it serves many more purposes!

The 767 is indeed has a bit outdated hardware  . Hope they will change that soon, however the service looks very great.

Incredible trip report once again!! ET use a B767 to JNB, but i have spotted on an odd day their B777LR operating this route as well.

Ethiopia is a country that has been through a lot in the past from famine, human rights abuses, droughts, etc. So it is that much more special seeing ET rising from such a difficult past to what it is today. I believe ET is vital to the economy and continued growth of this country, so its success is important

Yes the B787 will be another great achievement for the airline, and I believe they have identified JNB as the inaugural route..yay!!

Thanks for a great report with great pictures on ET ! J looks very nice but too bad the seat is angled lie flat rather than horizontal.

I had a nice flight with ET last year in January on the 77L in Y and then a flight on a very worn out 763 ADD-DXB so I know what you mean when you talke about that the seats are very hit and miss. I posted a trip report here but can't seem to find the link for it.

Always a plesure to see your reports. But this one even though filled with Sam's photos, seemed to be missing the Sam's touch, in terms of the usual photos!! Was it because the wife was tagging along so close by lol!! Awesome pics with the crew and so glad that you got the uniforms the pursers wear.

When leaving an airport like Dubai of all places, people are carrying more than one bag on the plane. No wonder they have to force this rule. Etihad is very strict with this at Abu Dhabi, sometimes not even allowing you to carry the single hand carry you are allowed on the aircraft, and asking passengers to put it into the hold.

I don't go to flyertalk so I have no idea about this. When will 236 stop and when will 037 takes effect? My family still have combined over 300,000 miles with 037!!!! This is no good !

Thank you for the kind words Shudu, I probably won't be able to post the next few as these seems to be short interesting flight, but takes up bit of time and effort. Our iPad was left behind on a Comair B733 flight from JNB to VFA, and after 20 minutes we went back to search it and it was gone! That fast, I think Comair cleaner or staff in Zimbabwe may have took it and sold it on the black market within 20 minutes......who knows but we certainly learn a lesson out of it.

Spot on, thanks for the generous comment. All I can say is once you're married (or if you have already) then you will understand my situation in Trip Reporting and travelling. It ain't the same as the free single spirit anymore but I don't think it is a bad thing though. More travels will be with family instead of plane spotting and I am now more relaxed using a small handy camera instead of a DSLR so the quality does compromise.   I am also rushing in typing this TR to make more family time!

Sorry I didn't even have much photos from this year 1999 trip. I just have some distant memory of it. I remembered just came off a Air Canada and United flight, SAS service was in sharp contrast. A full lunch for 2 hours flight from LHR-CPH on MD81 and then a very nice Scandi feel terminal in CPH before a B767 (sort of empty) flight in the winter from CPH-PEK. The crew were so nice when I asked about the A/C type, he went to the cockpit and collected all sort of flight data, pax numbers and handed to me. I have no idea what SAS becames in the last 10 years. I look forward to my next flight with them this September from Paris to Oslo and to Iceland

It depends when the EU lets the BD/BA deal to close. Rumor seems to be BD DC will cease to exist immediately upon completion. No worries with "037" miles, I was just referring to the new purchase price, went from 2.5c to 3.5c.

I just read on Flyertalk that they are the same, but there may be some slight differences then. TK is fully flat on the 77W and 333.

The ET 77L seat in J are angle flat, but not so steep and actually I found it comfortable enough for a long flight. I think it is quite comparable with the Emirates 777 J seats. (new ones) Some ADD-BKK-CAN flight and ADD-PEK are operated by 77L.

Wow that is fast, shocking as well! I hope you reported it. Also, look into downloading the "Find my iPhone/iPad" App. This has helped me in the past track down my missing phone.

Thank you. Do not look forward one bit to fly Cathay with DNATA handling the check in at DXB next week. Abu Dhabi was much better at check in.

Hi Sam,

Lovely read and great pictures, as always!

The difference in the 77L cabin vs the 763 is quite stark, I know where I'd rather be, so long as its not in that darn middle JCL seat!

Food looks so so, Interesing colours on that starter meal on the JNB bound flight, also, terrible load, more suited to a 737 than a 763.
