Hello everyone and welcome to my first trip report in airliners.net!
I have been reading TRs for years but I’ve never posted anything here. I enter here almost every single day, so I thought it was about time I contribute to one of my favorites sites on the web.

For the last two weeks my sister was planning to travel somewhere on her vacation and because my parents were in Brazil a few months back and really enjoyed their time there, she decided to go to Rio de Janeiro for a few days. I had just finished summer classes in college, so she asked me if I wanted to join her. I look up the fares on TACA’s website and the average cost is as high as US$ 800, which reminded once again how expensive it is to find good deals in South America. Anyways that wasn’t a problem for us because she works for Avianca-Taca, so we paid a minimum for our tickets

The queue at security moved really fast

Inmigration was done quickly as well

LIM is a very nice airport: modern and with lots of space to sit and rest.

There’s only thing that really bothers me about LIM. Walking through the terminal is like walking through a hall of mirrors! You can only see your reflection and it’s almost impossible to take a good pic because of the double window, but I still tried to take some pictures.

Boarding went really smooth and orderly

Our flight was done by one the old style TACA aircrafts

Flight was almost full

Tonight in-flight entertainment is The Help
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r587/diegovgh/Lima%20-%20Rio/IMG_0252.jpg

At 11:30 crew began to serve dinner and the options were pasta bolognese or cilantro chicken
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r587/diegovgh/Lima%20-%20Rio/IMG_0254.jpg

Good presentation
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r587/diegovgh/Lima%20-%20Rio/IMG_0255N.jpg

Dinner was just OK. The salad was really tasty and even though the noodles were good, there was almost none of the bolognese sauce. The meal also included bread with butter, a cookie and also a drink which came later on.

I really liked this detail

Hello Rio
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r587/diegovgh/Lima%20-%20Rio/IMG_0288.jpg

We landed at 4:48am (local time) and the temperature in Rio was 26°C (78° F)
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r587/diegovgh/Lima%20-%20Rio/IMG_0295.jpg

I felt like immigration took forever! Besides the fact that there was a queue from our flight and another one from Copa Airlines, the staff was really slow.
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r587/diegovgh/Lima%20-%20Rio/IMG_0298.jpg

I’ve always read complaints about Brazilian airports and I thought they were overreacting but I can understand now their point of view. Terminal 1 was very outdated and the overall environment was really bland. Not a good impression and I was hoping a lot more from one of South America’s most important airports.

Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever been to. The landscape surrounding the city just makes it even better, but the city itself exceeded my expectations. There’s a lot movement and the people were very nice. Here are some pics I took from Rio.

CONCLUSION

As usual TACA gave an extraordinary service. I enjoyed both flights very much: tasty food, great service and friendly crew. I’m used to travel in the Embraer 190, which they use for domestic flights and I love them because of the PTV but the schedule of the LIM-GIG flight allows you to sleep, so personal IFE is not really necessary. Rio de Janiero was just wonderful and I hope I can come back to see more other things. Brazil was way more cool than I expected and I loved everything about the country.

I would (most likely will) fly again on TACA and hopefully I will be making another TR anytime this year. Thank you for reading my TR, have a great day.

Saludos,
Diego

Mil gracias Diego, enjoyed every part of the report!

I just left Lima 2 months ago after I was based for 2.5 years in Lima, good memoris of thinking about Lima, the great Airport (including a great lounch), I used the aiport around 80 times during my time in Lima! and of course the nice people in Lima!

Quoting aeroperu89 (Thread starter):

yes normally the fares are pritty high as general in SouthAmerica and specially Lima... but 1.5 years ago I used the very same flight for a bargain fare of 260 USD!! all in!

also the seats are nice, I hade the seat pockets... nothing fits in

I really liked this detail

I am surprised as I was 3 weeks ago on a LIM-CCS TA flight in business and I had to ask for pepper and salt... the FA mentioned due to costs saving now the passengers have to ask ... well also other airlines are doing this since some time like LH etc.

the ETA is horror, specially as the red eye is quite short!

the Embraer 190 is my absolutly favourit aircraft! The TA onces for domestic ops are great, specially the business class, just amazing.

So thanks again or better to say muchisimas gracias, bringing back memorys!

¡ Hola y bienvenido al foro, Diego !

Dude, nice report ! It's not everyday that you get to read trip reports featuring TACA Perú (or Lima Airport) here on A.Net, so this was a very nice surprise !

TACA is definitely a nice carrier, they offer a reliable service, but their airfares ex-Lima are really expensive !
By the way, I think it's just a matter of time for TACA to launch a second daily flight to Rio, those flights are always full !

Nice to see more Peruvians on A.Net ! Enjoy your time here !

Saludos,
Nicolás

Hi Diego,

Very nice trip report with lots of nice photos! Brazil looks great too! I've never travelled to South America before which I always wanted to. TACA looks very nice with good service, clean aircraft and great mood lighting.

Thanks for sharing.

Hola Diego,

Bienvenidos to A.net! great to have another South American tripreporter here onboard.

Thank you very much for your great report. You have very nice pictures here! TACA Peru look good. I had the pleasure to fly them in December on LPB-LIM.

Were those people at curbside at Lima Airport waiting for check-in or just standing around?

LIM was a very nice and modern airport, but queues were horrible at the security checkpoint when connecting between international flights. This increases connection times and bares the risk of misconnections which is exceptionally bad for airlines based at LIM like TACA Peru.

I hope to see more reports from you in the future and I am looking forward to your contributions in other threads!

Hi Diego

Nice trip report, thanks for sharing this with us. I enjoyed the Rio scenery.
However, the TACA 320 looked a bit cramped. Not my choice for a 5 hour ride.

I know right? The fares are very expensive here but you can get good deals sometimes, you just have to be alert! Although the prices can't be that low because South America (and I always forget about this detail) is a pretty big continent. I cannot believe you paid 260 USD!! It's a bargain! The industry discount helps me a lot and I paid like 80 USD all in

I was really surprise by this comment, because the salt and pepper were handed out for each passenger in this flight. I didn't ask for them and I still have both of them in my night stand jajaja

Quoting Avianca (Reply 1):

Actually the return flight schedule is even worse! You have to be at the airport at 3am or so... which is so tiresome!!

I love the Embraer 190 too!! I like the PTV even though they are completely unnecessary for such short flights! There are movies and everything but there's usually only time to watch an episode from Modern Family or The Middle. Although last time my dad flew with TACA, they shut down all PTVs ¬¬

I was really shocked to see the flight so full!! I knew they were doing good, but it's nice to see the traffic to and from Lima is growing   The flight that is not doing so well was the one from Porto Alegre, I heard they were not that full but it's a 3 weekly flight so I guess it doesn't TACA that much!

Brazil was just awesome and I encourage everyone to visit that beautiful country! South America has a lot to offer, so I hope you can come to Perú, Brazil or another destination any time soon!!!

Were those people at curbside at Lima Airport waiting for check-in or just standing around?

The people were just standing there. I understand you had connecting flights here, so you probably didn't see the counter area. This area is located between the domestic and the international arrival areas, so if you want to go from one to the other you must walk outside the terminal or go the second floor and pass the restaurant and airlines offices. That's why there's always people outside the airport.

Quoting volvair (Reply 4):
LIM was a very nice and modern airport, but queues were horrible at the security checkpoint when connecting between international flights. This increases connection times and bares the risk of misconnections which is exceptionally bad for airlines based at LIM like TACA Peru.

So sorry to hear that   Thanks for the information, I honestly didn't know that! I believe LIM has gotten to small for the amout of passengers who want to connect here.

Quoting MSS658 (Reply 5):
However, the TACA 320 looked a bit cramped. Not my choice for a 5 hour ride.

The flight wasn't as uncomfortable as I thought it would be, but I agree with you. I guess it's nobody's choice, because TACA only has narrow body jets. The South American destinations you can fly to with wide body aircrafts (from Lima) are Caracas, Guayaquil, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Santiago; and these are operated by LAN.

Again, thank you for your comments and I'm glad you enjoyed the TR

I enjoyed reading your trip report. I am travelling to Lima from Miami with LAN in 2 weeks so it was great to see some photos of the Airport. I was actually surprised to see that Lima Airport looks very modern, efficient and clean with plenty of amenities for passengers. I have a few internal flights within Peru as well so no doubt I will post a trip report at the end.

Hi Avianca!

Fantastic TR - I loved reading this! TACA seems like it has an excellent hard product. Would love to try them sometime! Always great to see well-managed and successful Latin American airlines deliver good quality, especially in Y

A few things to note:

+ Lima seems to be an excellent airport. Yes, sadly the shape of Brasilian airports leave much to be desired. Wait till you see the TR I have to post on the condition at GRU!

+ Rio de Janeiro is one of my favorite cities. Glad you had the chance to enjoy it. Weather seemed somewhat spotty when you went?

+ Found it funny that at GIG, signs were still in Continental (not changed to United) and they seemed to have bundled COPA and Alitalia on one side. Haha.

+ Totally digging the TACA ad at the check-in counters at GIG with the Arenal volcano coming from the dude's cappuccino. Awesome.

+ How did you feel about the seat differences on the outbound journey versus the inbound?

+ "The Help" is a great movie. Hope you had the chance to enjoy it!

Thanks a lot for the report. I just love Lima's airport - though, I do miss the "old days", and walking to the planes.

Anyways, sadly, choices keep dwindling for us in LA. Elsewhere, TACA's offering would be mediocre - but here, they are a reliable enough way to travel around.

Saludos,
A.

I'm really looking forward to reading this report! It's been like 10 years since I've flown to Miami in LAN's 767.

Are you flying with LAN during your entire trip? I really hope you enjoy your time here in Perú. In fact, I know you will

Actually I didn't find the airport as bad as some travellers. Sure, it was very outdated but overall still functional. Although that's probably because of the flight schedule I had (as you can see there were few people at the airport). I hope you post some pics of GRU too!

The first two days were very sunny but the last two were really foggy, which was a pity because we planned the trip to Cristo Redentor and Sugarloaf Mountain those last two days.

Actually, when I was at terminal 2, the new signs for United were there! I distinctly remember it because it was next to the TAP Portugal desk (I'm huge fan of TAP livery!).

I honestly didn't feel any diference... But the newer design seems so much more stylish than the older one

While I understand your point of view, I consider that TACA still offers a better service than most airlines here in LatAm.

I know right? The fares are very expensive here but you can get good deals sometimes, you just have to be alert! Although the prices can't be that low because South America (and I always forget about this detail) is a pretty big continent. I cannot believe you paid 260 USD!! It's a bargain! The industry discount helps me a lot and I paid like 80 USD all in

heay, I think I am a kind of especialist regarding cheap fares... 260 USD to GIG as mentioned or 250 USD to MDE ex LIM or 1400 USD to HKG from LIM etc... I love to find cheap fares...

Quoting aeroperu89 (Reply 6):
Actually the return flight schedule is even worse! You have to be at the airport at 3am or so... which is so tiresome!!

yeah, specially if you have to go to the office after the arrival in LIM like it was in my case ...

Quoting aeroperu89 (Reply 6):
I love the Embraer 190 too!! I like the PTV even though they are completely unnecessary for such short flights! There are movies and everything but there's usually only time to watch an episode from Modern Family or The Middle. Although last time my dad flew with TACA, they shut down all PTVs ¬¬

well I like the PTV also but couldnt agree more on your comment... but on the other side I had on nearly all my domestic TACA flights in Peru problems with my PTV, I am also not a big fan of touch screens in PTV's on aircrafts!

Cheers

Hi Diego!

I too, really enjoyed your report! I have never been to Lima or Peru and enjoyed the photos of that airport. It looks very nice!
Rio De Janeiro has become a second home for me and I travel their frequently. Maybe someday I will connect in Lima, it looks much nicer than several other airports that I have used to connect.
I have never flown with Taca and they also looked like a nice carrier.

Thanks again for the great report!

I forgot about that detail! You're so right Avianca, TACA's PTVs are really hard to use... but once you get the hand of it, then it's ok.

I should have stayed the whole day... I got to see the city but only for a brief moment, beacuse of the clouds. It was still nice, though. I paid 50 reales (27 USD or so) to ride on the tram, but you can also take a bus to get to the statue (I don't know the price on that, sorry). The thing with the tram is that it gets full very quickly. so you have to buy the tickets really early. And to get down to the station, you must wait a long time while doing a long queue. This was the part of the trip which I didn't like at all.
Once you're up there, you can take the lift and escalators to the top; but it nicer to walk and it takes like ten minutes to get to the top.

Saludos,
Diego

Hi Aeruperu89!

Thanks for a nice report with nice pictures!

Great that you flew to Rio De Janiero which is a fantastic city! I visited there in 1996 and had a great time and hope to go there again in October this year.

Taca seems to be a nice carrier but the departure and arrival times to and from Lima are absolutely horrible!

Looking forward to your next report!

Good report! Looks like TACA provides a nice service on a flight of this length - food looks good, and how nice that you had what looked like easy flights, and no delays, etc.

I would love to visit Rio - definitely on my bucket list.

HI Diego.

Excellent report - i really enjoyed the reading and the photos. I noticed you are not scared of taking pictures at immigration and security so well done.

I am surprised by the state of GIG - what a horrible airport. With a buoyant economy, I am surprised this has not been addressed. Still, doesn't seem to loose them any customers.

Taca seemed a good airline too - though perhaps they could consider a bigger aircraft on such a long route.

Thanks!

Luke
