Hi guys,

it is time to write another TR, this time intra-Peru.

Background:

It was time to do another trip, since I have not travelled from Lima since New Year. I was checking the internet pages of LAN Perú, TACA Perú, StarPerú and Peruvian Airlines for offers. I was open to the destination, just looking for a great deal. What I found was an excelent fare of USD 102 with LAN to Iquitos. Me and my parents are Peruvian residents, so our fare was that. My grandma, who is just visiting us from Czech Republic had to pay USD 255. LAN favors Peruvians and residents on their national fares.
Iquitos is located in the hearth of the Peruvian Amazon, and it is the LARGEST city in the world with no road connection. The city has about 350k inhabitants, and all people and/or goods must be delivered there either by boat or by air. This sure promised for an adventurous experience. We booked a tour and hotel one hour off Iquitos by boat on the Sinchicuy Lodge.

Check-in:

I did the online check-in, so mine and my family´s bags were checked in a few minutes. No problems, no hastles, nice check-in staff, as usual in this wonderful country.

At Airport:

Lima Jorge Chavez has won many awards after it´s reconstruction. Its a very friendly airport, with friendly staff. The national terminal is a little bit more dated than the international, and there are fare less amenities. However, for the little wait one does there, its fine. There is even a lounge.

The national terminal:

Britt Perú shop:

TACA Embraer will be flying to Piura today:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC08907.jpg

Friends, TACA and Avianca:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC08909.jpg

Usually AV flies A320s into LIM, this must have been and equipment change:

Departures today:

Our flight into Iquitos:

Our A319:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC08917.jpg

Flight:

09.03.2012
LAN Perú
Lima Jorge Chavez Intl - Iquitos Coronel FAP Francisco Secada Vignetta Intl
Flight LP 2376
Scheduled Departure: 05:35pm
Scheduled Arrival: 07:25pm
Actual Departure: 05:40pm
Actual Arrival: 07:25pm
Equipment: A319
Load Factor: about 90%
Seat: 12A

Boarding was very organized and efficient, rows 12 to 24 were invited to board first, then all rows. Pre-boarding was accesible to families travelling with small children, handicapped people and those holding a LANPass elite card. No bussiness sections on LAN Perú national flights.

Cabin while boarding:

Knee shot:

Cabin:

Soon, boarding was completed, the safety demo was played and with a slight delay we taxied and departed Peruvian skies.

Big rivals (un-officially, LAN is accused to being behind the temporary shut-down of Peruvian airlines):

Overhead:

Bye bye hazy Lima (note the AV ready to depart back to BOG):

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC08944.jpg

Soon, the service started. It consisted of a snack box, plus soft drinks. Out of alcohol, only beer was available. Crew consisted of two FA´s , one male, one female.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC08963.jpg

The rest of the flight was uneventful. When the crew collected the trash, they dissapeared for and hour and so, and emerged after landing to prepare the cabin.

We landed in total darkness at Iquitos airport on time. It was interesting, because you see no light at all only seconds before touching down. It was a little scary

De-planing was via stairs, which I always like  http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC08982.jpg

Bye LAN:

What I love about this amazing country is that people is super friendly. Usually, nothing is a problem. The staff let everyone take their pictures, they did not hastled or harassed anyone. Super!!

Iquitos:

We stayed one night in Iquitos and the next day we boarded a boat that took us one hour into the Amazon, to the Sinchicuy lodge. Here are some destination pictures.

The HUGE Amazon river:

Me and the gigantic tree on of the jungle expeditions:

Now this was scary, this super big Anaconda was moving past us like nothing happened  http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC09234.jpg

Back in Iquitos at the local market. Guess what fish is this  http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC09243.jpg

After some wonderful experience and days in Iquitos, it was time to head back to Lima. We were pre-checked again, so it was a question of minutes befiore our bags were checked and we proceded to security.

Check-in area:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC09358.jpg

Just as we entered the transit area, a Peruvian Airlines B733 arrived from Lima:

The waiting area (left side):

Right side was more crowded:

Lima featuring all traffic tonight:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC09373.jpg

Soon, our flight was called and we boarded our A319 via stairs. I used the back door:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC09382.jpg

Before take-off, the aisle:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC09385.jpg

Take-off was quick and we were soon in the night skies. The same snack box and on the way to Iquitos was distributed.
Today, two female crews were in charge. One was excelent, friendly and smiling, the other was kind of bitter.

I opted for Inca cola:

The same design:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC09396.jpg

I visited the bathroom which was cleand and contained a decent amount of things one might find useful:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC09391.jpg

To my utter surprise, the stupid IFE (Just for Laughts) was changed to the Airshow, YES!!!

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC09420.jpg

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC09446.jpg

Soon after, we landed into Lima and deboarded via stairs again. A bus took us to the terminal. We collected our bags and grabed a taxi back home.

Seats:

Our plane in Lima:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e223/checo77/Iquitos/DSC09452.jpg

Conclusion:

LAN Perú showed a consistent product with a decent fare. However, nothing special stood out and can be pointed. The planes were nice, seats confortable, service was good for a 1.5hrs long flight (no way we would get a snack in the US). Crew was doing their job, however showed no real interested in the pax. It was an efficient transportation from point A to B, however, nothing really special. I prefer Peruvian Airlines, as you will see in the TR I will write soon on my flight to Cusco.

If you have any questions or comments, I will be very happy if you leave them

Regards,
Adam

Ahoj Adam,

great to see your Iquitos report up! It seems to be a nice destination and your pictures from there highlight how diverse Peru is. Andes, the Pacific, the dense Amazon jungle...

LAN seem to offer an okay-ish product here although nothing special. Seeing the fares you quoted reminds me how privileged I was in Bolivia with its much lower fares.

Very much looking forward to your Peruvian Airlines report!

Hola Adam!!

As usual, a great TR   I've said it before but I'll say it again: thank you so much! You have made many TR from Lima and it was (and still is) nice to see reports from my home city (and from LatAm).

I cannot believe you ate that! They look so terrible...

I have found this extremely common in LAN flights! There's usually someone who just ruins it, but in general the crew's attitude is not warm at all.

Keep up the good work   I'll wait for you TR with Peruvian Airlines!

Hi Adam,

Interesting to read your report, thank you! The flights themselves look to be fairly typical, nice to include a snack though! I was most fascinated though in your destination pictures - Iquitos is not a usual place to visit! Some interesting shots, especially of the wildlife. Did you just see the snakes passing you by, or was it a nature reserve? Did your guide (if you had one) seem alarmed by them at all?

Thanks

Exactly! The fares are terrible, but much better if you are Peruvian/resident. Much better than taking the bus, needless to say, you cannot take a bus to Iquitos

Hi Signol! Thanks for the nice words! The animals were all found on a hike we did in the jungle. The guide was very calm, he said there is no way an Anaconda would attack a human being. Especially that big was already fed, so he/she would not attack for weeks. The said he is personally scared of the jaguar and cayman, but not of the anaconda. He told us to watch less Hollywood, which I found funny

Hi Adam,

Interesting report on this exotic route (at least for me it is). I remember the city of Iquitos from my visit to Peru some 8 years ago, but I haven’t been there. I have visited the South part of the country, and yes, Paracas National Park as well.
A bit of a pity you have no daytime shots of Iquitos airport or your flight over the Andes. But the ‘local’ photos make up for that

Lychemsa, no, it is not mandary. At least not in Peru. However, I do have a yellow fever vaccination. I don´t think there are any dangers, you need to have a good repelent though. The kind you buy in the drugstore (like Off) do not work, you need to buy a specialized, concentrated 99% Deed.

Do you know if there any diference in the A319 LAN Peru use for the international routes? I have to flight to Punta Cana via Lima and I see LAN use the A319 I was wonder how will be five hours in the small A319

Hmm, as far as I know, the only difference is that the A319 used in domestic flights lack a C-class, the A319s used in international flights do have a bussiness section. Otherwise, no PTV´s and same legroom as the A319 you see in the report.

Enjoy Punta Cana and don´t forget to post a report!

Hi Adam

Great trip report, thanks for sharing it with us. LAN seemed to have a nice product enroute, sufficient for this short flight!
The Amazon pics look incredible

Greetings
Marc

Thanks MSS658! They do have a decent product, better than European airlines on such short route.

another great report remembering all my travels I made the last 2.5 years in Peru!
I made the same trip 2 years ago!

Quoting Checo77 (Thread starter):
Iquitos is located in the hearth of the Peruvian Amazon, and it is the LARGEST city in the world with no road connection. The city has about 350k inhabitants, and all people and/or goods must be delivered there either by boat or by air.

these facts are really facinating, also the fact that of course not to much cars around their, but a lot of "Moto Taxis" aka TukTuks....

Quoting Checo77 (Thread starter):
Usually AV flies A320s into LIM, this must have been and equipment change:
Quoting RAGAZZO777 (Reply 4):
Actually AV has been sending the A330 on one of its daily flights since February, so no, it wasn't an equipment change.

correct, finally they can offer again a decent cargo product (beside the freighters by QT to MIA and CCS) in LIM! and yes the cargo market is huhge!

Quoting Checo77 (Thread starter):
Out of alcohol, only beer was available

as always on domestic flights with LA in Peru, but hey nothing to complain about an ice cold Cuzqueña!

Quoting Checo77 (Thread starter):
Content (a chocolate cake, cookies and a chocoteja):

its still a nice touch, but yes I had this snack... had around 50 of the same boxes in the last 2 years... they could change at least every 3 months the contenents or?

Quoting Checo77 (Thread starter):
We stayed one night in Iquitos and the next day we boarded a boat that took us one hour into the Amazon, to the Sinchicuy lodge. Here are some destination pictures.

Dude, for me the Amazonian trip was one of my best trips ever! I had plans to go again to IQT but hadnt the time before I left the Inca Country!

Saludos
Avianca

Yeah, I haven´t seen a city THAT infected with mototaxis, incredible!

Cusqueña is very nice and I loved it, however, my favorite Peruvian beer is Pilsen Callao

Really? Woow, they should definitely change more often! Frequent travelers must be dying when flying in LAN, if they serve them the same food each and every time.

Well, that is always a great excuse to come back, isn´t it? Plus, you can do it the adventurous way I would love to try   Fly to Leticia at the south tip of your country and board a boat to Iquitos. Sounds really exiting, I would love to do that trip

jaja, and bingo again, I had this in my plans, but the other way around flight to IQT, take the boat to Leticia and from their making some days of holidays in Colombia and than straight back to LIM, unfortunately it never fitted in my agenda... but hey now I am in Venezuela and its finally not to far away and I have still a lot of Lan miles to burn

What an adventure! I would not have stood still long enough with those snakes around to photograph them that is for sure. And the grubs, no way. It was like you own fear factor vacation.

I would like that "burning" too, but my LANPass account looks rather sad

Cusqueňa is not actually bad, much better than Bareno or Cristal (the worst Peruvian beer, the color is like pee and it tastes like water). But Pilsen is much better, the flavor is good, plus it bears the name of the city are all Czechs are so proud of and where Pilsen beer was invented

Hahahaha I was not calm too, but the guide was reassuring us "the snake is definitely well fed, its fat, she is not hungry and will not attack you". I guess we had no choice than to believe him!!!
