Date: 15 May 2002
Air New Zealand Flight NZ24
Singapore to Auckland
Boeing 767-300
Registration : ZK-NCO (Del.31/08/2000)
Departure Gate: E5
Scheduled Departure: 2020hrs
Scheduled Arrival: 1030hrs
Pushback: 2018hrs
Takeoff: 2030hrs
Landing: 1028hrs

After planning for this trip since February 2002, I am finally on the way to NZ! It was supposed to be SIN-CHC direct, but Air NZ decided to scrap it in March....grrhhhh...

Got to Changi Airport at 1500hrs and went to my office to clear my emails. Since I work at Changi Airport, I will leave out the details. Waited for my friend at arrive at 1740hrs, and we proceeded to check in at Row 3, Terminal 2 where the New Zealand bound flights for SQ and NZ were allocated.

Was checked in by a rather shy SATS staff, and after a short conversation, realised that she was rather new. She smiled after I told her I am a staff from the Airport. She proceeded to allocate seats 32K and J for us, and tagged our bags to CHC, and told us about the custom procedures in AKL. We had to collect our bags from the belt in AKL, clear customs and turn left to the domestic check in and deposit our bags. With all instructions made clear, she smiled and wished us a nice flight.

Hanged around the Airport transit area, got the rego of the plane from our computer systems and proceeded to Gate E5 where the NZ plane is waiting. It was ZK-NCO, one of the newest plane in Air NZ's fleet.

Passed through security check with a breeze and into the Gate Holdroom. It was soon time for boarding and we made our way into the cabin. A male and female crew was standing at the door welcoming us with smiles, not a bad first impression!  Smile

A very spotless cabin welcomed us. The seats, the walls were looking good, so were the seats. We made our way at the starboard side of the plane and found our seats which was the first row of red cushions, 32K. I noticed that Air NZ has only 3 rows of Red in the entire economy cabin. Not difficult to know my exact seat.

The slimline seats is very comfortable and the pitch "feels" more than 32 inches, although NZ published it's Y seats on B763 as 32". The seat can also pivot up when the seat is reclines, pretty much like the SQ777 seats. You can feel the difference on this plane vs Qantas 767 (31"). Blanket and pillows were also nicely arranged on the seat.

As I sat down, the couple sitting in front of us started chatting with us. She and her husband are from Christchurch, and we had a nice conversation about New Zealand and Singapore throughout the flight.

The Captain soon came on the PA system and introduced himself (which I didn't manage to get his name due to his accent), and made the usual speech. At 2018hrs, the usual jerk indicates pushback for the gate. The safety video was screened and traditional Chinese subtitles were shown on the screen, although the commentary was in English.

The plane soon lined up at Runway 02R and the engines soon began their task of bringing the plane airborne. After approx 31 secs later, our plane tyres left the tarmac in Singapore Changi and was on our way. As it was a late departure, there wasn't anything much to see outside. Our plane soon banked to the right and proceeded straight towards the direction of AKL. Our plane's routing will take us pass the island of Bali Indonesia, Derby Australia, Sydney and to Auckland.

About 1 hour later, it was time to have dinner. Since there was no menu available to copy from, I would have to think of my own... Big grin

Menu

Green leafy Salad

Lemon Chicken with Stir Fried Vegetables Enhanced with Steam Rice
or
NZ Lamb Chop with potatoes in special sauce

Chocolate Mousse Cake

Cheese and Biscuits

Bread Roll

As the lamb selection had ran out, I took the Lemon Chicken, which was quite tasty but the lemon sauce wasn't that sour. When I took out the plastic cutlery, I noticed that the glass they gave me had a cracked line. I pointed that out to the F/A Anne, and she gave me that "angry" look and jokingly said "What have you done to it!" Hey, don't blame me, I didn't do anything 1"
She took away the glass, and didn't gave me another! If she did, I would have given NZ higher marks............

I noticed that Air NZ uses a nice ceramic teapot to contain the Chinese tea which was quite a pleasant idea. I remember QF using a metal container to serve tea when I flew them to HKG in Dec 1999, and I didn't even remember what SQ uses when I flew them to HKG in May 2001 (maybe it was a metal container too, otherwise I would have noticed something different!)

The meal tray was soon cleared and most of the paxs were already sleeping. The cabin lights were dimmed after the meal service. I tried to sleep and manage to occupy the three middle seats beside me. I think the flight was only 60% full in economy, so there's plenty of space available.

Managed to grab a bit of rest, but was always woken up due to slight turbulence now and then. Anyway, I managed to wake up in time to watch "Harry Potter and the Soceror's Stone (why is it know as Philosopher's Stone in NZ?).
About thirty minutes after the show, the cabin was bright again and the Captain came on the PA to announce the commencement of breakfast service.

Breakfast consists of

Muesli and Yoghurt

Fresh Fruits appetiser

Fried Omelette with Hash Browns and Mushroom in Tomato Puree

Bread Roll

Orange Juice

After the meal service was cleared, the cabin crew began to spray the insecticide all over the cabin. Soon after, they came around with hot towels for the passengers.

Prior to landing at AKL, the screens began to show some Star Alliance connection videos and a introductory video about Auckland. About 1 hour later, we began our descent into AKL. We passed through some clouds with minimal turbulence and we saw the city of AKL out of the window. Just before landing at AKL, we saw the Airport Runway on our right. The plane soon made a right bank, and we were on our way to landing at AKL.

Our wheels approached 23L and touched the ground at 1028hrs, New Zealand time and the plane taxied towards gate 1, where we disembarked with the crew thanking us for flying Air NZ.

AKL-CHC Transit:

I made my way out to AKL Airport, and found that the atmosphere was rather dull, shades of grey and blue around the airport with no bright lightings didn't appeal to me. Walked towards the immigration areas where the big welcome sign by AKL Airport was followed by the escalator down to immigration. Only 4 counters were opened and I waited for about 4 minutes before being served by a grumpy man. He looked at me, asked a few questions like my departure dates etc and proceeded to stamp my passport. Collected our bags from the belt and continued.

Next was Customs, where I declared my Honey Lip Balm which I got from Body Shop, since Customs did state HONEY as a restricted item. No problems with that and I had my luggages / bags x-rayed.

The instructions by the SATS staff at Changi was right, after clearing customs, we turned to the left and voila the domestic counter. There was only (gasp!) one counter opened and I think at least 1/3 of my flight was on transit to CHC. Not a very good impression and I had to wait in line for 7 minutes to get to the front. We placed our bags on the conveyor and handed our boarding passes to the lady behind. Clearly tired, and trying hard to keep smiling, she took the ticket stapled behind my boarding pass which we got in SIN and returned to us for the next sector.

After that, my friend and I had to decide if we want to take the free shuttle bus to the domestic terminal or walk there. Since it is colder here then SIN, we decided to test the weather outside. The temperature was apparently 17 degrees C, which was cold, but still manageable. We decided to walk. We walked pass the Arrival Area and realised that Check In was just beside the Arrival Hall.

The public area is wayy better than the transit area... bright and airy. We followed the Blue and White lines outside the terminal building which will get us to the Domestic Terminal in about 10 mins. We passed some planes and before reaching the domestic terminal, we saw the Control Tower....

In my personal opinion, it looks old and rather "invisible" and can be replaced by a newer coat of paint or just get a new Tower !!!

Reached the Domestic, where it is spilted into a Qantas Terminal on the right and NZ on the left. Nothing spectacular about the domestic terminal, as it looked small and run down. Wondered around for a short while before passing thru' security check and proceeding up to the departure area for the flight to Christchurch.

Date: 16 May 2002
Air New Zealand Flight NZ517
Auckland to Christchurch
Boeing 767-200
Registration : ZK-NBA (Del.03/09/1985)
Departure Gate: 30
Scheduled Departure: 1155hrs
Scheduled Arrival: 1305hrs
Pushback: 1204hrs
Takeoff: 1211hrs
Landing: 1308hrs

The plane that was going to take us to CHC was NBA, which is the oldest B762 in Air NZ's fleet. According to TG992, the plane will most likely be retired by the end of June. So I was quite lucky to fly this plane.

Boarding was a non event, as we were one of the last few paxs into the plane. Our seat for this flight was 11A/B which didn't have a window ! Awhh shucks....so no other piccys for this flight.

Once seated, noticed that the Cockpit door was not closed and I could see the pilot and his paperwork in his hands. Hmm........no worries about post September ? (I learnt from my friend in CHC after I landed that there was a security breach where a pax from LHR had managed to bring a gun pass AKL domestic terminal un-noticed a few days before my flight).

The plane interior is OLD !! The stains on the wall and the seat fabric was too noticeable. The seats were worned out and had started to sag. Oushback was delayed due to two missing paxs, who arrived late and was rather apologetic about the delay. Doors (including the cockpit) soon closed and pushback at 1204hrs.

The plane soon lined up at Runway 23L and takeoff commenced after the departure of a NZ B737. Take off roll was less than 20 secs, possibly because of the light load (About 50%) and the low fuel.

After the seatbelt sign came off, the cabin crew began passing the light meal around. It was simply Ham roll and water, with tea or coffee. The food taste HORRIBLE ! The sandwich was simply too cold and salty, and I refused to touch it after my first bite. I ended up having the biscuit and cheese and coffee.

Since it is only a 1 hour flight, by the time the meal trays were cleared, the plane had already started its descent. The friendly cabin crew passed around a basket of sweets for the paxs, which I think is a nice gesture. After passing thru the Pacific Ocean on the left of the plane, we soon landed at Christchurch, touching down at 1308hrs. Taxied to the small domestic terminal (which is just beside the main International Terminal) and the crew thanked us with nice big smiles on their faces.

The continuation of the trip report will be posted below this thread, so watch for it.....

I hope you have got a good impression from Air New Zealand by this trip.

Concerning Anne, She may of thought that you didnot want another one, therefore not coming back. Did you specifically ask for another one??
Also, i see that they have stopped giving out Menus. Maybe a cutback.

Thay gave menus out on my last flights, and brent also specifically told me he recieved Menus on his SYD route.

Oh well, I hope you enjoyed AirNZ, as they are known for their WARM, FRIENDLY, ALWAYS SMILING flight attendants!!

Also, could you PLEASE give us a run down, on how you would rank them amoungst other airlines you ahve flown!!

I hope you have experienced the Worlds Warmest welcome!

Cheers
Mike!!

Air New Zealand Flight NZ 34
Christchurch to Auckland
Boeing 747-400
Registration : ZK-SUJ (Del.29/06/1998)
Departure Gate: 29
Scheduled Departure: 0935hrs
Scheduled Arrival: 1045hrs
Pushback: 0939hrs
Takeoff: 0948hrs
Landing: 1044hrs

After spending the past 10 days traveling around the wonderful South Island of New Zealand, it was time for me to go back to SIN (where all the back log of work awaits!). Woke up at 0635hrs and was off to Christchurch International at 0745hrs for my domestic flight to Auckland. My friend who was driving me to the Airport spoke about the crash of a airliner near Taiwan (He didn’t say it was CI) after hearing about it from the radio station.

The flight that I will be taking, NZ 34 is flying in from Tokyo and will be stopping at Christchurch before its continuation of journey to Auckland; hence it’s departure at the International Terminal.

Got to the airport at about 0800hrs and proceeded for Check-In. I was 4th in line and there were only 4 counters opened. When it was my turn, a cheery Carolyn, who is working part-time as written on her tag, served me. She took my air ticket and proceeded to type on her computer. She looked up to me and asked if I had changed the date for my departure flight. Yes, I did coz I was originally flying on the 24th back to SIN, but I later changed it to 2 days later coz I wanted to take the B744 instead of the B762.

She tried accessing the computer, but she seemed to have no choice but to walk over to Air NZ’s Customer Service Desk to get my ticket verified. Hmm, someone ought to check the system of the Air NZ office in SIN where I bought my tixs. She came back in less than 2 mins and smiled, saying that the problem had been resolved. She proceeded to check me in for both flights and tag my 2 bags (at 19.9kgs) all the way to SIN. I was given 2 boarding passes and was advised to pay the Airport tax at the Bank of NZ counter just opposite Check In. I thanked her and she wished me a pleasant flight back home. (2 thumbs up for her).

Walking around the public area of the Terminal, I went into the stores and browse around. Got some chocolates and honey to bring back to SIN for my relatives and friends.
At around 0900hrs, said goodbye to my friend from NZ and my companion for this trip, as he will be staying another 10 days in NZ.

Walked pass a lady sitting at the entrance who looked at my paid airport tax sticker behind my tix. Went up one level and walked towards the immigration counter. The lady behind looked and scanned my passport and returns it back to me. At first, I thought that an out stamp is required, which she politely explained that only arrival passengers will receive a stamp.

Behind the Immigration counter was the security screening, where I placed all my bags for screening. Walked pass without any problems, and as I was collecting my bags, the security personnel behind stopped me. At first, I thought that I had done something wrong, it later turned out that the security personnel had seen me holding my Singapore passport and proceeded to chat with me. (Phew!) He had stayed in Singapore for two years to work before coming back to NZ. Had a nice short chat with him, but as it was time for boarding, I said bye to him and proceeded to the Southern Magnet counter on the left to collect my purchased items from the public area.

The transit area at CHC Airport was great, bright airy and a very high ceiling unlike AKL. I quickly walked towards Gate 29 and saw my plane ZK-SUJ waiting patiently for its paxs to board. Quickly took a shot of it…….

I boarded the plane at around 0917hrs, only 18mins before departure time. Walked down the aerobridge and stepped onto the B744. Was not greeted by anyone (for being late?) and saw the female F/A having a serious conversation with another male F/A. The male F/A quickly came over a directed my to my seat at the Starboard side of the plane.

Walked towards my seat 51H, and saw that a man had occupied the seat. When I told him that 51H was my seat, he apologized and decided to give me the window seat, which was unoccupied and just beside his female company. I walked pass them and made myself comfortable at 51K. Although the plane was less than half filled, I had wanted the window; otherwise I would not have bothered the couple.

At around 0936hrs, we commenced pushback, and it is that time that the TV monitors came on showing the safety video with Japanese subtitles. After the safety video, some rather dull pictures appeared. I later realized that the TV screen was actually showing the views from a nose camera! COOL! I haven’t seen one before and it was excellent.

The plane made it’s way towards the end of the runway and commence take off roll at approx. 0944hrs. Within 30 seconds, we lifted off the ground towards the East (as the sun was directly in front of us, affecting the view from the nose camera). The nose camera started to point downwards and we saw the magnificent view of the mountains below us.
I also took some pictures from my window….

Breakfast commenced very soon after we leveled at 37,000 feet. Steve, the male F/A came over with the breakfast trays on his hands and began serving us. Breakfast was

Whole meal Bread with smoked salmon and roast turkey

Bowl of mixed nuts

Orange Juice

Fruits platter

A small piece of chocolate.

Steve and another female F/A, Aki (Japanese) came round with tea and coffee. Took some tea had had a cold but rather good breakfast. Managed to talk to the couple and realized that they are from Australia and will also be going to Singapore on the connecting flight. The trays were soon cleared as the pilots prepare for landing. Steve later came around with a basket of sweets, which the three of us had politely declined. He looked at us, winked and began to shake the sweets off the baskets onto our laps so we had no choice but to take them Big grin That was pretty nice of him.

Prior to landing, we passed some rather dark clouds and experienced some heavy turbulence. Announcements in English and Japanese were made to inform about the landing and safety procedures. Seems like all announcements made on this flights were in dual languages.

Was looking at the TV screen again as it showed the landing approach. I saw the runway in front of the plane and the pilot had to adjust for landing, possibly due to winds. Saw the number 2 3 L under the plane, and the pilot soon made a smooth touchdown at AKL at 1045hrs.

While taxiing, I saw the plane below….

Plane soon made it’s way to Gate 10 and parked beside ZK-NBW, which was departing after we parked. Disembarked the plane and proceeded to check the gate for my next flight back to Singapore.

Air New Zealand Flight NZ 23
Auckland to Singapore
Boeing 767-300
Registration: ZK-NCJ (Del.21/04/1995)
Departure Gate: 7
Scheduled Departure: 1155hrs
Scheduled Arrival: 1900hrs
Pushback: 1200hrs
Takeoff: 1207hrs
Landing: 1903hrs

Walked around the transit area of the airport after my Arrival and found that it was rather easy to navigate around. All the main shopping area are concentrated away from the Departure Gates and the view is much better due to the glass structure overlooking onto the tarmac area. Saw other planes which was literally worth a shot………

Since I had done enough shopping, I just looked around and proceeded towards Gate 7 for boarding.

Yup, this was the plane that will be the conclusion of my journey to the beautiful island of New Zealand (at least at the southern part).

Boarding soon commenced and the passengers on the flight quickly formed 2 queues to board the plane. I waited till the end before boarding, since Carolyn at CHC Check-In got me a window seat and said that she had blocked out the seat beside me unless they really have to release it (sweet!).

At this time, an announcement came on the air for the Air Pacific flight. When I heard the announcement, it gave me the impression that if anyone hears the announcement, they are actually at the wrong place and the plane might take off without them! Hehe….Good one.

The seat number that I had was EXACTLY the seat number for my flight from SIN-AKL. I saw the first row of red seats and I knew that was the place. Placed my bag at the overhead compartment and proceeded to make myself comfortable for the long journey home.

Looked out the windows and saw that it was raining rather heavily. I think there was a alight delay in baggage as the door was still open at 1155hrs. At 1159hrs, a loud slam of the door indicated that we were ready for pushback.

Plane soon proceeded to Runway 23L and commenced takeoff. Plane climbed VERY steeply up the sky and the person in front of me had some stuff came tumbling on my leg. Passed the stuff back to him after the seatbelt sign was turned off.

2 energetic ladies Sue and Angela were serving paxs on this side of the cabin. Both of them were patient and had smiles for every paxs. A drinks service soon came along and Angela placed a packet of rice crackers on the table and asked me what drinks I would like. I choose the orange juice, which was served on a cup with the word AN-NZ at the bottom. The rice crackers soon stuck to the teeth and I had to go to the bathroom to try to remove it.

At around 1300hrs (NZ time), lunch was served (the pictures for this flight didn’t turn out well……..so no food pics)

Leafy vegetables with French Dressing

Chicken Pasta
Or
Fish with Vegetables and Rice

Bread Rolls

Cheese and Biscuits

Chose the pasta and it was good, but was slightly burnt on one side of the plate. Angela soon came round with the teapot offering Chinese tea, which I took. Sue soon came around with the tea and coffee. Both ladies came again, this time offering NZ red and white wines.

The meal trays were soon cleared away and the cabin was dimmed. Didn’t really bother about watching the TV as I tried to get some rest as I wanted to watch “Ocean’s Eleven” which will be showing when the plane is somewhere above the Australian Desert after Cobber Peddy (erm….that’s the nearest identifiable city for me). Meanwhile, noticed that Sue and Angela will take turns to offer paxs water. We had to take the cup and hold it for them to pour into the cup. Somehow, I still prefer SQ’s method of pouring the cups with different drinks and allow paxs to take from the tray.

Didn’t manage to sleep at all and so I had no choice but to take out a small book on New Zealand which I had brought along. After reading for around 30 mins, the show soon started and I shifted my attention onto the monitors. When the show ended, I decided to have what Kiwis called “comfort stop” and was surprised to find that a lot of people was also getting out of their seats. Seems like “Ocean’s Eleven” had hit a nice prime time viewer ship ratings.

Just before the next show starts, which was Comedy time, Sue soon came around with a basket of Tip Top ice creams and began to hand out to the passengers. Yum…….some of the paxs even asked for another serving. The ice cream was hard and I had to be careful in case I break the spoon. Suddenly I felt a cold sensation on my forehead. I reached my hand up to touch my head and realized that it was Vanila Ice Cream. The lady pax seated behind me looked at me sheepishly and apologized. No problem, all I need is to go to the toilet and get the vanilla off my hair.

At around 1545hrs (SIN time) or 1945hrs (NZ time), Sue and Angela came around again with the drinks service offering the same rice crackers earlier, and this time I took coke. Angela opened the can of coke and passed the whole can to me, offering it with a small smile. Noticed that smiling can be rather tiring and I happen to catch Sue pouting in the mouth (which was rather cute).

Dinner service soon commenced (no pics again) and this time we have the choice of

Beans Appetizers

Grilled Chicken with Mushroom, Vegetables and Mashed Potatoes
Or
Udon Noodles with Pork

Bread Roll

Cheese with Biscuits

Blueberry Cake

Took the chicken selection as I don’t feel like having Udon noodles after passing 8 hours with no food! Not much comments about the food, as it was not as good as the pasta. However, overall, the food at Air NZ is above average and I don’t have any complaints about it.

Some pictures which I took on this flight

Over Australia

Mt Agung at Bali Island

During the meal service, I watched Snow Dogs, which was about this black guy going to Alaska to find out about his parentage. Simply a hilarious show, which sent the cabin into occasional fits of laughter. Trays were cleared, the last show “Snow Dogs” ended and there was still another 2 hours flight time before landing.

Went to the back of the cabin and chatted with Sue, Angela and a talkative male F/A Dave. Sue and Angela excused themselves as they served paxs, leaving Dave behind for our conversation.

I bought a NZ Bear found inside the SkyShop magazine from Sue. Immediately, Dave took out a small pack containing napkins, baby lotion and a small bear and passed it to me., saying it’s for the bear (very funny Dave). He shoved it to me and asked me not to show anyone else in case they all asked for it (There wasn’t any babies onboard!!!). I thanked him and casually said if he has any playing cards available since I collect them. He said there was none, but he will try to see if there is any from the Business Class cabin ahead.

I told him if there was too much trouble, he should not do it. However, he asked my seat number and said that he will try to look around for me. Thanked him, and proceeded back to my seat with less than 50mins before landing.

True enough, approx 30mins later, as the plane was starting to descend, he came over to my seat and passed me 2 Sydney Olympics Kiddie bags which he said contains Playing Cards and some other kid stuff like stickers etc. Was really grateful to him for taking the effort to accede to my small request.

Sue was coming around passing the basket of sweets when she saw the bear which I had just bought from here sitting on the seat…..

She was surprised and exclaimed “I like that….that’s cute”

Didn’t manage to get any shots since it was already dark outside. Sue and Angela came round to check the passengers before going back to their seats for landing. The plane was approaching Singapore from Bintan Island and made a steep bank to the left and landed at Runway 20R into the wet and rainy SIN. For a short while, I felt that the plane was not able to stop as it took a long time before the plane really slowed down.

The plane taxied towards South Cross and made its way to Gate E2, where the paxs disembarked. Was the last to leave the plane, and I thanked Sue, Angela and Dave for the very pleasant flight back home.

Verdict: Air NZ had been a really wonderful experience for me, and the last flight back home really was the icing on the cake. Thanks to all those who made my trip pleasant, not forgetting Maggie from Air NZ SIN office who really helped me in planning the trip for my friend and me. I would not hesitate to take NZ again, as I found them to be better than the two QF 767 flights I had taken previously

Mikey,
Nope, I didn't ask for one, BUT if she even ask or came back with another glass, it will make me feel better.....it's called "anticipating a need". Sounds like Cathay's advertisements  Smile

Ranking:
1) Singapore Airlines - the last flights to HKG in May 2001 was absolutely the best flights I ever had, especially SQ870 (pls see trip report earlier).

2) Thai Airways - the warmth, friendliness and good food is a sure winner for me (check the other reports)

3) Cathay Pacific - consistent, warm service with friendly crew, however not as spontaneous as TG or SQ (Last flew them on Dec 1997)

4) Air NZ - this is where NZ will fit in. Out of four flights, seems like NZ24 was not as good as the rest, even the domestic sectors were better..but friendly crew throughout

5)Silkair - Smile more and be happier might lift rankings.

6)British Airways - Good Asian crew made the flight more bearable, those female British F/A sure are stuck up when serving Asians!

7) Garuda Indonesia - crew were quite good, friendly but not smiling much. And I didn't really like the idea of a female crew making such a din when one of them fainted........sounds like fish market at the back (SIN-DPS-SIN 1994)

8) Qantas - ermm.......the basically non-smiling crew coupled with the "don't bother me" attitude for my few flights sure didn''t help in rankings.

9) China Southern Airlines - hello people, I asked for cold water, you don't have to be rude and hand me a cup of hot water instead !!!

My personal rankings

Once again you really outdid yourself - Part 2 was marvellous. Strange that you didn't get menus for such long flights though!!!!

Cheers
