CX 77W MNL-HKG In Y 15Mar12 With Pics

Date: 15 March 2012
Route: Manila MNL – Hong Kong HKG
Distance: 711mi
Flight: CX 906
Flight Time: 1:39h
Dep. Time: 11:19
Aircraft: Boeing 777-367/ER
Registration: B-KPB
Dep. Gate: 4 (T1)
Seat: 39K

1st flight on B-KPB
5th flight on Cathay Pacific
13th flight on a 777-300/ER
114th 777 airframe flown
195th flight on a 777

As I was about to sit down in my seat, I realized that I had not written a trip report on Cathay Pacific’s 777. I first flew on a Cathay Pacific 777 on 8Sep97 and had my second flight on 13 Oct99 but I had not started to write trip reports yet so this was a good opportunity to do a Cathay report.

I had been given a seat in Business class but just as I was putting away my things in the overhead bins, a flight attendant approached me and told me to move to 39J. Since I was on a stand by ticket, I had no problem with moving although I had looked forward to Business class even on this short flight. There was no one there when I got to that row so I had plenty of time to get settled in.

I first noticed that the seat belts were of a different kind than I’ve seen before. I guess it’s some sort of an airbag but not sure how that would work. Perhaps someone can enlighten me?

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/CX77WtripMar12007.jpg

There were also power outlets at the seat and leg room was good.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/CX77WtripMar12005.jpg

I would have no problem to fly long haul on this aircraft. The seat was also very comfortable to sit in except after a while the lumbar support was a bit strange and annoying. It was like a plate that was attached to the seatback and it would have been better to not have that at all. There were no adjustable air vents at every seat which seems to be standard on newer aircraft these days. Blankets were available upon request which made sense since this was a short day time flight.

A lady showed up for 39H and said her husband got upgraded from 39K so I could move to that seat. Great to get a window seat and even better with no one in the middle seat.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/CX77WtripMar12006.jpg

Boarding had started late so we did not leave on time at 1100. The flight was almost full except for a few center seats. We finally pushed back close to 20 minutes late and the safety video was played. Most of the flight attendants were from Hong Kong which surprised me a bit since CX has a lot of Filippina flight attandants and I thought there would be many of them on this flight.

After a powerful take off we were in the air and climbing fast to cruising altitude. Shortly thereafter the flight attendants brought out carts and handed out a cheese and ham sandwich along with a beverage, which was very tasty.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/CX77WtripMar12013.jpg

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/CX77WtripMar12015.jpg

I explored the entertainment system but quickly settled for the moving map which is always great. We were flying over the city of Bagiuo and then turned left towards Hong Kong over the South China Sea.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/CX77WtripMar12004.jpg

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/CX77WtripMar12003.jpg

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/CX77WtripMar12011.jpg

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/CX77WtripMar12012.jpg

We reached a cruising altitude of 34 000 feet and started our descent after 1h and 10 minutes of flight and landed at Chek Lap Kok after a flight of 1h and 39 minutes.

It was a great short flight on Cathay Pacific. I’ve always had great flights on them and they did not disappoint at this time.

Looking forward to any comments.

An interesting route, one that has always piqued my curiosity, I was happy to see your account of it. I have often seen CX metal at MNL, and it reminds me of just how close the two mega-cities are. How did you find the terminal at MNL?

Quoting The777Man (Thread starter):

What a shame... still an account of the economy product is always appreciated by hoypoloi like me. So thanks.

All in all, seat looked great, but the catering looked a little underwhelming for an Asian flight of over 1hrs 20mins cruise. Many PAX may be connecting in HKG, and this won't set them up well.

Thanks for a taste of CX 777

Yep, that's an airbag in the seatbelt. I fly mostly AA and have seen them in various seats. A crew member told me that it was needed to meet the "16g rule" for crash survivability mandated for new builds after a certain date. The standard can be met in any number of ways with airbags being one of them. The airbag is suppose to inflate away from the pax and reduce the forces experienced in a crash.

Haha. I guess a 2 hour flight is bearable in that seat but when you do 2 long hauls back to back, you really notice how uncomfortable the seat is. Hopefuly I can get to that report sometime - another is being created right now. 24 hours in that seat and the bottom half of your body has had enough of that seat! Next time I fly with CX, I'll be looking out for the newer seats and hope like anything that they are deployed on certain routes I'll be flying.

Service doesn't seem too bad for such a short flight!

Hello Lars,

Good short report!
Cathay seems to have treated you well on this short flight. I was just wondering if you had the forward sliding seats or the real reclining ones?

Quoting The777Man (Thread starter):

Bummer, but not too bad because you might have needed longer than approximately 1h to fully enjoy the business class.

I was in Terminal 1 and it hasn't changed a bit since I was last there in 1997, 15 years ago!

Yes, but a short flight so not that odd. It was really good!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 6):

I don't recline unless the person in front of me reclines so I didn't try it this time. My guess is that it was a reclining seat rather than forward sliding.

Nice read Lars though a shame you got downgraded, that said, it was ashore flight.

I testing to see the airbag type seat belts, only see these on exit and bulkhead row seats before.

I'm sure the catering is a downgrade from the Cathay of old, but not a surprise really given the never ending rising costs.

Cheers

A downgrade in the aircraft? Seriously? Did you list yourself on Business class and they found out later though?
And moved you to the middle seat at 39J? (middle of H J K seat) and sandwiched with a couple, that's a WOW!

I've been upgraded with my staff ticket from SFO to HKG on the upper deck.
That was the only good experience I have with CX after so many flights with them.

Not a CX basher here, honestly speaking, I think CX is one overrated airlines in Economy class.

I flew CX BKK-HKG-BKK the day before you did. Of all the Asian airlines they are my favorite. Their service, even in economy class is great. I have flown on their 777's but not their 777-300ER. I'd love to see a TR from you on one of their ultra long hauls on a 777-300ER.
On my return flight I had to wait for a boarding pass and was given a middle seat. I spent some time chatting with the agents at the staff counter and thanking them, because they had just had to deal with an irate employee. That is not the way to behave especially when non revving.
At the gate when boarding, the agents scanned my boarding pass, I was informed I had a seat assignment change, and instead of a middle seat, I was given a bulkhead aisle seat.
CX in my opinion is the best Asian airline. They seem to go above and beyond, and although I have never been upgraded on CX (only on JL BKK-NRT!), I still have had great service. When I was at AA, I went to the The Wing, told them I am an AA employee and asked if I could see the lounge. I was given a tour of both the first class and business class lounges, then told I can stay in the business class lounge until my flight CX 880 HKG-LAX. I was once surprised by a hand made card, signed by the crew on my birthday and given a box of chocolates and a visit to the cockpit. And I have been privileged to ride cockpit jumpseat several times on take off and landing. Sadly those days are a thing of the past.

Have you kissed a 777 today?

A good short flight on new CX metal/product.

The person in the aisle in 39H asked the F/A about the seat and she said that this was the old seat and that they are being replaced. Some newer 77Ws have the new seat already. So technically not really a new seat.

great little report on CX 77W; I love their livery on these aircraft, but somehow this interior does not attract me.

Quoting The777Man (Thread starter):

Ah bummer, but indeed, that's the risk of standby. Every premium seat is a big plus and bonus, but you can never complain with something else. Though, it's kind of strange to get this downgrade onboard. I once had a seat change before takeoff but in the same cabin, which was very ok for me of course.

Quoting The777Man (Thread starter):

I see a dirty seat cover of the middle seat... CX should replace those, since it's not nice to have a 'dirty looking seat' for a longhaul flight.

Quoting The777Man (Thread starter):

Ah, exchanged with you, probably?   I wonder if that man was having some status somewhere (or a friend of the crew).

Hello Lars,

A short, but sweet and enjoyable report of your CX flight.

What a pity about the missed chance to be seated in Business Class. Did you probably have to make a place for the husband of 39H lady? How odd to have your spouse traveling in a different class. In my case, I would not want to be separated like that.

Quoting The777Man (Thread starter):

32 inch does not look bad after all and the individual power outlet is very important for us, trip reporters.

Most of the flight attendants were from Hong Kong which surprised me a bit since CX has a lot of Filippina flight attandants and I thought there would be many of them on this flight.

Could the Philippine flight attendants be serving first en business class? How about the in-flight service manager? Could it be Joy?

Yes, I'm fairly sure they moved her husband to my old seat in J. It was a short flight so not a big problem for them to be separated I guess. I did get upgraded when I last few CX in 1999 KUL-HKG and there was a dupe seat so I got to fly in J that time

Interesting to note the service in this short flight. It used to be a LOT more on HKG-MNL ... used this flight a lot during my Manila days.

Yes, I flew CX on their 50th anniversary day in Sep97 and had cake in the gate area and a full meal on board. When were your MNL days ?

Quoting MHTripple7 (Reply 23):
I've never had the chance to fly CX, but it seems to be a carrier I need to fly. Too bad about your downgrade to Y though....

You should definitely try CX; they are very good still.

Quoting MHTripple7 (Reply 23):
PLEASE let it be the BG 77W.
