Hello and welcome to my 7th trip report,
This trip was a weekend getaway trip and we (my brother, mother and myself) decided to spend it in Hong Kong with Thai Airways. Hope you enjoy reading.
At first, only me and my brother would be going on the trip. So I planned to travel on airlines which I haven't been on. Those on the list were Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Sri Lankan Airlines. These airlines, especially Srilankan Airlines, offer quite an attractive fare on BKK-HKG-BKK. As soon as my mother decided to join us on the trip, she said she would rather fly with Thai Airways. Around 4 days before the planned trip, the flight was booked and seat selected on Thai Airways website.
Date: 31 March 2012
Airline: Thai Airways International
Flight: TG600
Route: BKK-HKG
Aircraft: Boeing 747-400
Registration: HS-TGZ
Class: Economy
Arrived Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport very early in the morning at door 1
Check-in was very quick. We were told that the flight was quite full, only around 10 seats out of 325 seats in Economy class were empty.
Then we proceeded directly to passport check and security screening which took around 20 minutes altogether.
a few airside pictures
Then we went straight to TG lounge in concourse C which was the closest one to our boarding gate. We were amongst the first group of people in the lounge, entered shortly after it was opened.
Seatings in the lounge
I really like the variety of food offerings:
At 7:10am, after a good hour at the lounge, we were off to the gate for a 7:20am planned boarding time.
Rest area
Boarding gate: not so busy
The aircraft that would take us to Hong Kong
Boarding started, a little bit behind schedule
Settled in my 40K
Crew distributing blankets and headphones
Safety demo. Then the crew came to greet us as gold members and offered us 2 options for breakfast: pork congee or omelette, the meal was served at the same time the crew served special meals. It was good that my mother who has Silver status also get to choose her meal preference early as well.
Pushed back at 8:05, 5 minutes behind the scheduled departure time
Took off at 8:15am
As soon as the safety belt sign was turned off, the crew came and gave out landing cards, then hot towels then drinks
A very generous leg room
Interesting ads on sawasdee inflight magazine
Then shortly after, breakfast was served. Pork congee
As my brother didn't eat, I took his food
Crew came and offered drinks several times during the meal service. For hot drinks, coffee, English tea and Chinese tea were offered. Hot towels were given once again after food service.
2 hours into the flight, and we started our descent. The captain announced that due to high traffic at Hong Kong Airport, we would need to circle around for a few moments.
Descending to HKG
Landed at 11:35 am local time.
My seat
Disembarking the airplane: the long galley
Old First class
Business class on the lower deck
Took a train to passport control. It was a very long queue there, fortunately when we got there, they opened a new line and a lot of people rushed in that line, but still it took us around 20 minutes to clear.
Baggage was already on the belt when we got there
Then we took a taxi to the hotel
View from hotel window
This is the detail of the returning flight
Date: 1 April 2012
Airline: Thai Airways International
Flight: TG607
Route: HKG-BKK
Aircraft: Boeing 747-400
Registration: HS-TGB
Class: Economy
Arrived Hong Kong Airport Terminal 2 at around 5:30pm for a 8:45 flight
Went to use the *G counter
Check-in was quick. As this was a full flight, we couldn't have 3 seats together. So me and my mother will have 2 seats together and brother will be on the bulkhead seat. We got ask a question that should TG select to upgrade gold pax from economy to business, would be accept it if only one or two of us get upgraded (me and brother are gold and mother is silver). Of course, we gladly accepted it, although it never happened .
It was the first time I got a lounge invitation when travelling in Y.
We headed off by trains to the passport / security check point
Some aircraft at HKG on a Sunday afternoon
Then we went to the Royal Orchid Lounge
Here are some lounge impressions and the food offerings
Massage seats
Game zone
A great offering of Thai food. Not in the picture was a famous Tom Yum Soup
Always love the ice creams
Then we were off to the boarding gate 48, quite busy but it was expected as the flight was a full 744
When pre-boarding call was made, people started to queue, one line for Business and First class and another line for economy class. When boarding started, it wasn't done by seat row number.
Then came Orient Thai HS-UTV
This flight was very similar with the outbound flight. The crew came before took off, offering 2 options of dinner: pork with rice or chicken with rice. This time, my mother didn't get offered to choose the meal early.
Pork with rice
Chicken with rice
Sawasdee magazine and another A380 ad and Thai Smile
Very comfortable space
After 2 hours and 30 minutes, we landed at Bangkok
Parked in concourse D which was very close to passport check counters
My seat
I was surprised to see there was no queue at all at passport control. It only took a few minutes to clear. and not long after, our bags came on the belt
This would conclude my Hong Kong trip report. Overall, I am once again happy with TG service. Both flights were more or less on time. Crew were very nice and friendly. I must say though that I found the crew on the outbound to be slightly better than the ones on the inbound, as on the inbound fight, crew seems to disappear straight after food service while on the inbound the crew walked up and down the aisles regularly to see if they could offer anything. Food was once again good. TG lounges at both airports were good. I noticed an improvement on Business class lounge food/snack offerings at breakfast time. Finally, its always great seeing TG is doing so well on this regional sector.
Thanks for reading. As ever, all comments/feedback are very much appreciated.

Thanks for sharing, I flew TG 794 BKK-LAX (Soon to be ended, shame another ULH flight bites the dust) and was really impressed with their Y service, and this too seems much better than other cariers long haul service and it is only a 2.5 hour flight.
Hope you enjoyed Hong Kong, was there visiting friends in Nov and had a blast.

Hi Win,
What a beautiful series of flights. Thanks for posting your pictures.
The catering seems to be be top notch, neatly presented and with nice utensils. I am really impressed. I hope to fly THAI once again in the future. Their fares can be slightly high sometimes, but I have also seen them do specials.

Two of the best lounges!! If only I flew TG out of HKG last week, was busy in Silver Kris lounge as I flew SQ / Gate 25 so I don't have time to hop all the way to TG lounge.
I'm glad you enjoyed your flights both way.
Thank you for sharing.
Quoting fiscal (Reply 5): You seemed to have lots of extra legroom for an economy seat?
It's 34 inches pitch in THAI 744 Economy class. The widest seat pitch any airlines offer in Economy class (without paying extra fee nor being gold member nor Premium Economy class products!)
Don't be annoyed knowing the passengers around you are non-revs and op-upgraders, be grateful for them. Life is beautifu

Hi Win,
another enjoyable report with good pictures! I flew MUC-BKK-BNE on TG in late 2010 and wasn't impressed. However, I may give it a try again (e.g. 77W, A380).
Quoting win1290 (Thread starter): These airlines, especially Srilankan Airlines, offer quite an attractive fare on BKK-HKG-BKK.
I cannot recommend UL in these days. I flew DXB-CMB-BKK recently and was shocked how tight the legroom was. The condition of the cabins wasn't great either. It's too bad because I had some good flights back in 2006.

Thank you for your TR. I live in Bangkok and have flown TG several times BKK-HKG-BKK and I usually find their service is very good, although it would be nice if there was a personal video at each seat, something TG lacks on some of their 747-400's. It is nice to have a full meal served (CX and EK also do the same), and the inflight service is usually very good, although it has been better on some flights than others.
The only thing lacking on TG is that on CX and EK I have been able to visit the cockpit while parked at the gate,(it's not allowed in flight anymore) but on TG it is usually not allowed. I once asked the purser if he would ask the captain if it was ok, and he wouldn't even do that. Otherwise, the service on TG is usually very good.

Hello Win,
What a good report! If it wasn’t for your beloved mother, you could have taken an exotic 5th freedom flight. Well, next time then maybe? It was sure interesting to see you travelling on a classic TG B744. Don’t you just love that old school cabin lay out and the colourful seats? And what a huge amount of legroom, I wouldn’t mind spending some time in there on longhaul!

Actually, my father took your plane's return flight to BKK that day! Anyway, let's hope TG will speed up the cabin retrofit of its older aorcraft and further improve its great-already service.
You seem to have had 2 great flights in Y on TG; I'm, especially, impressed by the good legroom and the catering on board !!!
Nice Lounges too, both at BKK and AND OLD: Hong Kong - Kai Tak International (HKG / VHHH) (closed), China - Hong Kong">HKG...
Thanks for sharing and looking forward to your future TR's
Hi MH017! Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Yes, they were great flights, food service was very good for a 2.5 hour regional flight.

Hi ORDJOE, I am glad you liked it. Its sad to know that TG will replace the direct BKK-LAX with the one with a stop over in South Korea. Nice to know that you also enjoyed TG service! I did indeed enjoyed Hong Kong Thanks.

Hi Luke! Thanks for the nice words! Catering did impress me too. TG just started a 52nd anniversary special fare on its website and currently there is a 'London to Land of Smile Special fare Promotion' if you are interest

Hi PH! Many thanks! Sorry to hear about your TG experience, but I noticed recently that the crew would offer Business class food when one option in Economy class food runs out. I hope your future travel with THAI will be much better.

Thanks for the info. It became very attractive when I found out that if I booked the ticket months in advance, the price on UL on this sector would be the same as offered on Air Asia. I heard that Sri Lankan Airlines are in the process of refurbishing its A330 and A340 fleet. Would be interesting to see inside the cabin.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 7): But hasn't that already changed on the refurbished frames?
No, the refit 747-400s still have the same seat pitch (34 inches) in Economy class. In fact I was on it last December on LHR-BKK. It has exactly the same number of Y seats (325) as the older 744s.

I have never asked to visit a cockpit on TG, but I try to do that in the future when I can. Hopefully they will allow. Personally, I wouldn't mind not having PTV on shorter flights but I suppose it would be very nice to see it in line with other airlines.

Yes, after took off and during approaching, the flight map was shown on the big screen.

I'd say they are comfortable, but they somehow give more privacy.

Confirmed seat pitch stays at 34 inches on the refitted ZIM products.
HS-TGP/R/T/X and other two are now fitted with ZIM seats and PTV in Economy.
I flew HS-TGT back in NOV 2011 FRA-BKK around the flooding situation, 121 pax in Eco and I got all A B C seats to myself, heaven!
I'd love to fly THAI refitted 744 across the pacific to ICN/LAX! Would be an awesome experience.
Bring back 4 engines 4 long haul across the pacific

Nice trip report, thanks for sharing it with us.
Nice to see BKK's airport, always impressed with it.
TG's 744s look outdated, but still comfortable.

Thanks Marc! I think BKK airport looks better at night than day time. I just love the space offered in Y in TG 744s!

Hi Win,
very nice read and very positive about TG. Legroom indeed generous and food is looking good too.
But... for longhaul no PTV is something I might miss, therefore TG better updates the 744 seating to 2012 standard. Or are they replacing this type soon?
BKK lounge looks great too, nice food offering also for breakfast!

HI Eric, Thanks for the comment. The legroom was very much made up for the lack of PTV especially on the long haul. But the good news is that on the refitted 747-400 (with PTV in Economy Class), the legroom will remain the same. By the end of this year, all remaining 744 will be refitted. Some of the oldest 744 will be converted to freighters. I noticed an improvement on food offerings at BKK lounge and its very nice!
Thanks

Hello Win,
Excellent report with lots of beautiful pictures.
Quoting win1290 (Thread starter): As soon as my mother decided to join us on the trip, she said she would rather fly with Thai Airways.
One thing occurred to me was why you did not convince her to fly one of the exotic airlines. But as three of you happen to be Elite TG FF members, I understood.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 20): One thing occurred to me was why you did not convince her to fly one of the exotic airlines. But as three of you happen to be Elite TG FF members, I understood.
I actually convinced my mum to try out another airlines, I even showed her that flying Kenya Airways BKK-HKG-BKK in Business class was actually cheaper than flying the same route with TG in Economy. But my mum did insist on flying THAI and said TG flight time was better (early outbound rather than afternoon outbound).
Quoting akhmad (Reply 20): You make me craving for scrumptious Asian food.
quite hungry seeing it myself
Quoting akhmad (Reply 20): Just from curiosity, were there any Chinese flight attendants as well?
No, all the crew were Thais, all announcements during the flights were made in Thai and English.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 20): Was it more convenient than airport train?
For 3 of us, it was cheaper getting a taxi rather than airport train, I think more convenient as well.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 20): One of the perks being an Elite member even when you're flying Y.
Thats right, but it was the first time I got a print-out invitation.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 20): What if you said, ‘Can I have both of them? I cannot decide,
Hehe, haven't thought of doing that, but given the full flight I don't think I would be allowed to ask for both.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 20): Thanks a lot for sharing. I really love how you enlighten us why TG’s still doing well on busy BKK-HKG-BKK legs.
Best wishes,

Hey Win, once again a pleasant report! Do TG give good mileage in Economy Class?
Your TG experiences looked rather standard. Food service in Y looked quite impressive, although that pork congee looked really nasty! The HKG Lounge looked quite impressive, although a bit crowded. How did you manage to guest both your mother and brother into the lounge?

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 22): Hey Win, once again a pleasant report! Do TG give good mileage in Economy Class?
Hi Jonas! Thanks for reading and commenting.
TG doesn't give mileage if one travels in discounted Economy class(booking class W and V on TG), but gives 100% of miles flown when travelling in more flexible Economy Class (in Business class, one gets 125% and in First Class, one gets 150% of miles flown). To qualify for TG*S, one needs to accumulate 10,000 qualifying miles within one calendar year (or 15,000 miles by the second calendar year). To qualify for TG*G, one needs 50,000 qualifying miles or fly 40 international sectors with TG within a calendar year (or 80,000 miles by the second calendar year). The status lasts for 2 years. On this particular flight BKK-HKG-BKK, I earned 2,152 miles (1,076 miles per sector).

I think the food was great. Despite the look, pork congee didn't taste bad at all. TG HKG lounge which was recently refurbished was indeed very nice. The lounge was quite busy as it also accommodates passengers travelling with Air Canada and United Airlines.
My brother also has TG*G as well
