Hello everyone and welcome to my 5th trip report,
This trip report will cover a weekend trip I made during Easter weekend. Upon searching on the internet I saw a very nice fare with LH to Toronto. Without thinking about it too much I booked it right away, leaving Friday morning and arriving back in Amsterdam on Monday afternoon. Got the Friday and Saturday (which I sometimes work) off from work and as it was Easter weekend I automatically got the Monday off, as here in Holland we have what is called “2nd Easter day” (we also have 2nd Christmas day and 2nd pentacost day, no idea why actually). Upon looking for an hotel I chose for the Marriott Hotel in Downtown Toronto, quite a ways from the airport but close to the CN tower and some other places I wanted to visit. AMS-FRA-AMS will be operated by the good old B737 and the FRA-YYZ-FRA leg will be operated by the long A340-600. That will be the 2nd and 3rd time flying that type as I travelled Iberia on the Quito-Madrid sector many years ago. This report will be split into 2 parts. Part 1 will be the AMS-FRA-YYZ leg and part 2 will have some pictures of Toronto and the return journey: YYZ-FRA-AMS. The map for this weekend trip:
On Thursday night I quickly packed my bag and had a good 5 hours of sleep. Woke up at 7 o’clock, took a quick shower and had some breakfast. As my dad was off from work he was kind enough to bring me to AMS with the car. At 08:00 we arrived at AMS and headed straight to the check-in area. A quick look at the FIDS and I saw the flight was delayed 35 min. Instead of 09:40 the new departure time is 10:15. No problem as I had enough time to connect through to my other flight. Having checked in for both legs online the night before all I had to do is print my BPs and drop my bag off. Upon arriving at check-in area 8 I printed my BPs quickly and waited in line to drop my bag off. There was quite a long line, after 20 min it was my turn and 2 min later I had dropped my bag off. Exchanged some Euro’s into Canadian dollars, bid my father farewell, and went straight to security. There was a very long row at security. 30 min later at 09:15 I was still waiting in line and was getting rather inpatient by now. As I saw passengers which boarding time had already started were let through to the fast track lane I decided to try that as well as my boarding time without delay was 09:10. I was let through to the fast track lane and was finally past security at 09:30. While looking at the FIDS again the delay was now 45 min with a new scheduled departure time of 10:30. I headed straight to my gate and waited there till boarding time. Gate for this sector will be B27:
Upon looking on the screen at the gate the scheduled boarding time is 10:10. At 10 o’clock the aircraft finally arrived. D-ABIL will be doing the honors for me today:
Passengers coming to AMS deplaned quickly and 5 min after that boarding was finally announced. As always I was one of the last ones to board the plane. Was kindly greeted by 2 male flight attendants and proceeded to my seat: 18A. It was a pretty full flight at 90%. Next to me I had a little Japanese girl who was travelling with her father and mother to Tokyo flying with the dreamliner, I was jealous! The view from my seat, the LH 737 was also headed to FRA and pushed back just minutes after us:
A kind greeting by the cockpit followed with the reason for our delay: The originally scheduled aircraft to do this leg went tech last minute so they had to switch to this aircraft. Quite understandable and in my opinion LH couldn’t do much about that. With an announced flying time of 45 min we pushed back at 10:40 and started taxiing to (of course) the “Polderbaan”. We passed this HV aircraft with a special “Beach volleyball European championship” scheme:
Over the highway A4:
This KLM 737 came taxiing by:
And eventually passed us with a DL A330 leading the way:
Crossing the “Zwanenburgbaan”:
And over the “Hoofdvaart” which means we are almost there:
The KLM 737 departed followed by the Delta A330, then it was our turn. Starting take-off roll:
And up we were in no time!:
Which gave us a nice view of the City Haarlem:
The coastline:
Leg room shot:
The new Lufthansa “Magazin” for the month of April:
The flight crew was an all male one. Only the FO was a lady. Once the seat belt sign was switched off the 2 male flight attendants and male Purser sprung into action. The 2 attendants didn’t look to be enjoying their job, the purser on the other hand was the opposite. The snack was a kind of “raisinbread”. Didn’t eat it as I don’t like raisins and gave it to the little girl next to me who seemed to like it. I forgot to take a picture of it though, oh well. I did get an OJ which as always tasted nicely. A lot of passengers were worried about their tight connection at FRA. During the flight the crew announced that the planes will wait for them if needed and not to worry about their connection. It was quite a clear day above Dutch soil:
Once we reached German territory it got much more cloudy. We soon enough started our descent towards the clouds:
Through the clouds:
And into final approach:
And touchdown!:
ANA 787 sitting at the gate:
We then taxied to the remote stand following this VN 777:
GFA330 taxiing back:
Our remote stand: V 98:
Parked at our parking position:
I bid the crew farewell and deplaned via the back:
Took a seat in the bus next to the window to get a “under the wing” shot:

United plane nr. 3 in old colors:
United plane nr. 4:
Nice looking SIA A380:
2 US A330s next to each other at the gate headed to PHL and CLT:
LH heavies waiting at the gates:
Under the wing of the A380, very nice!:
MEA A320:
We then arrived at the terminal. For all the passengers with a tight connection there were gate agents waiting to transport them straight to the gate. As we arrived at the B gates and my next flight was also from the B gates it was a short walk to passport control and I was on the Int’l side in no time. The FIDS:
A walked a bit around the terminal and took some pictures of LH heavies. Love the fact you can get so close to the planes at FRA:
Soon enough my aircraft taxied to the gate, D-AIHH will be doing the honors on this leg:
The remaining time I waited at the gate. Boarding started right on time at 13:25. There already was a very long line with people waiting to board. I took a seat close to the First/Business class line. Once those passengers had boarded the remaining economy passengers could also use this line. I sprung into action right away and was through within a minute. Upon boarding the aircraft I showed my BP and was kindly greeted by 2 female attendants. I headed straight to my seat 36A. A Canadian lady was sitting next to me. The view from my seat, nice wingspan!:
Boarding almost completed:
My personal screen:
Danke!:
First impression of the Lufthansa Media World: Some nice movies, but not much else that interested me except for the airshow of course!:
Boarding was completed, the load will be pretty good at around 90%. A kind welcome from the cockpit and the safety demonstration then started on the PTVs:
Announced flying time was 7h20min and we pushed back right on time:
Gate B28:
We taxied to runway 25C passing some nice planes on the way:
CA A330:
QR 777:
TG 747:
This CX 747 taxied next to us also ready to depart back to HKG:
Lining up on 25C and starting take-off roll, such a nice quiet and smooth take-off!:

Airshow:
I had the sun against me most of the trip so not many “wing” pictures turned out that well:
Safety card for all LH A346s:
Inflight shopping magazine:
The decent legroom shot:
Close to Düsseldorf:
I first decided to watch Tower Heist, a great movie:
Flight crew consisted of 1 male, a couple of “older” and the rest young females. They first served a “Happy Mix” snack, together with that I got a coke:
The very handy cup holder:
Seatback:
Pillow and blanket:
The cabin:
Soon enough the crew came by with a meal. Don’t remember what the other choice was anymore but I went for the Spaghetti Bolognese, together with that a little salad with Italian dressing, bread with butter, cheese and lemon cake. It was quite tasty actually. Also added was a chocolate Easter bunny which I thought was a nice touch:
By the time Tower Heist was over we were a ways past Ireland and cruising above the Atlantic Ocean, 5h35min to go and cruising at FL360:
In the Lufthansa Media World you have an arrival guide with arrival videos of every destination:
I then watched an episode of Modern family which was quite funny:
After that I paid a visit to the lavatories, which meant going down these stairs in the galley:
The lavatories:
Another shot of the forward economy cabin:
Still above the Atlantic Ocean at FL360 with 4h36min to go:
The crew now passed by with the immigration forms which I immediately filled in. Some ice on my window:
Then I watched a movie I have been wanting to see for a while now: The Descendants:
It was cloudy most of the trip:
Close-up on the winglet:
The crew came by with drink runs, water, OJ or apple juice. I went for the apple juice:
After the Descendants we had just reached Canadian soil:
Which meant amazing scenery down below, too bad it was so cloudy:
2h12min to go at FL380:
At the next drink run I got a water:
Some more impressive scenery:
Now I was watching some different music videos. Of course I had to watch Adele:
With about 1h30min to go the crew came by with another snack. Choice out of a hot dog or a margarita pizza. I chose the hot dog together with a coke, also quite tasty:
Getting closer to Toronto. 1h14min to go still at FL380:
Soon enough we started our descent:
Our front wheel was already past Toronto with 20min to go at FL200:
As landing was from the west, and we were arriving from the east that meant flying over and past Toronto:
We also flew past the airport, which gave a very nice overview of YYZ:
That meant 2 sharp left turns:
And into final approach:
And touchdown!:
Taxiing to the gate:
Thomas Cook 757:
TS A310:
TSA330:
Passed some AC heavies:
This little fellow came taxiing by:
EK A380 at the gate:
Did you know AC was the main carrier here?:
We parked at the gate next to this nice G-registered Sunwing 737 and an OS 767:
The 2 doors were opened quickly and 10 min later I was out of the plane. Once in the jetway I saw 2 pretty long lines in front of me. Getting closer to the end I saw that 2 officers were performing a passport check and asking some questions. After showing my passport, telling the officer that I was staying in downtown Marriott for the weekend I was let through. That meant washing through a long glass corridor with the gates below us:
Once I reached immigration it was my turn right away. I approached the already grumpy looking Indian officer. Said good afternoon but got no reply back, oh well never mind then. After answering the usual questions I got a big circled V85 on my immigration form and was allowed to move on, that meant getting the whole “special treatment”.
Before walking to the baggage claim I first had to go to a separate immigration room. Stood in line for 15 min and walked to the immigration officer. After answering the same questions I had just answered the other officer I was let through to the baggage claim. The baggage claim looked very nice (forget to make some pictures) and my bag was there already when I arrived at the belt.
Instead of going straight to the arrivals hall I had to once again go to a separate room. This time the officer looked through all my baggage and asked the same questions I have been answering 3 times before.
After that I was finally let through to the arrivals hall. Went straight to the taxi stand where there was a taxi waiting for me right away. “To the courtyard by Marriott in downtown Torono Yonge Street” I said. Got an “ok no problem” from the driver and off we were. 30 min later I arrived at the hotel and paid the driver. The valet got my suitcase for me and brought it to check in. After being kindly greeted by my last name I got checked in. Having asked for an high floor room I got the 7th (out of 17) floor and room 723:
After checking my room and leaving my baggage I decided to walk around the neighborhood. Walked down Yonge street:
Yonge street is a nice place with lots of shops, musicians, tourists, restaurants and much more. There is also a big mall called the Toronto Eaton Centre. Walked through there as the shops were closing and decided to come back the next day. I decided to walk back to the hotel. Some Emirates advertisement:
My hotel:
After arriving at my hotel I took a nice bath. After that went to the restaurant that belonged to the hotel: The Yonge street Grill. Had a nice dinner, went back to my room and fell asleep at 9 o’clock.
Well I will leave part 1 right here. Another 2 usual flights with Lufthansa. A delay on the AMS-FRA sector but after hearing the explanation can’t give LH the fault as the plane went tech. FRA-YYZ sector was also a usual flight. The FA’s did their job and took good care of the passengers and I got to YYZ on time. The food was also of an ok quality.
I hope you guys enjoyed part 1 as much as I enjoyed making it. Comments/questions/suggestions are very welcome and stay tuned for part 2 coming in the next couple of days.

Hi Brendan,
Thanks for another nice trip report! great pictures! Despite the delay on AMS-FRA, LH staff seems very helpful in assisting the connecting pax. LH long haul services seem solid.

Its the same thing in Thailand as well, if a public holiday takes place on a weekend, the next working day will also be a day off. In Thailand we would call it a substitute holiday.

Nice report!! Loved the take off from AMS as I can now recall doing that on my KU flight, years back!! And now to the gorgeous A340-600! Great that you could fly on it. Until a few weeks back LH was operating the A343. Glad to have the long jet back at YYZ!!
Glad you could check in on-line, as I noticed that LH now has that feature for long haul flights. Also they have seatback videos now..nice!! I think I am ready now to fly with LH again.
You would have got a fairly good view of the CN tower and the Sky dome from the air, but I think you missed it, unless it may have seemed too far off. You landed on Rwy 5 on the other side of Rwy 23! Rwy 23 has all the spotters and other non-spotters who come to see the EK A380!! The non-spotters had probably even left by the time you landed, also disappointed the EK A380 came on Rwy 5 too lol. You probably took off from Rwy 23 on Monday? Or 24R
Wow you really had lots of questions and interrogation rooms to visit prior to leaving the airport. What were the make up of the others in those lines. Being a young person, I am sure they were a little more strict with you.
Did you not have an option to take the airport shuttle to downtown Marriott? That taxi ride must have cost quite a bit!!
Hope you had a great time in Toronto. Looking forward to the return trip.

I did get that good view vut the FAs were walking up and down the aisle and allready asked somebody behind me to stop taking pictures so I decided not to do that. Oh well went in the CN tower the next day which you will se in part 2. Nice to know it was rnwy 5 I landed on didn't know that.. Yes took off from rnwy 23 on monday indeed.

Well being 21 years old, being from Amsterdam and staying only 3 days in Toronto I on the other side understand why they made me do that and were strict. It seems to happen to me every time I go to Canada or the U.S.

Yes I did, but decided to take the taxi anyway.. It was around 50CD.. Yes sure had a great (short) time in Toronto probably going back this summer again to visit friends living in London.

Guessing that must be an ex CO plane since those engines appear to be the GE90.

Hi Brendan,
Very nice trip report! Toronto really is a great city, brings back a lot of memories I really should go back to visit someday.
I'm glad you had a nice experience on LH's A346. I flew them a lot in the last two years and looking forward to flying one of them to YVR in two weeks.
Looking forward to part 2!
Cheers,

Next flights: BSL-BCN-BSL on U2; BSL-HAM-BSL on LX; BSL-FRA-LAX-SFO-FRA-BSL on LH
I think we can expect some read on this one too, soon...
Overall, LH nice service it seems. Did they set up a bar in the galley for Y-class passengers?
I'm also due to fly them in May most probably, on the B744. With this service it's not a problem to get through that flight it seems.
Regards

Sound familiar. When I was landing with Transaero in YYZ, many Russians were asked to go to the "special treatment" room. I was only asked if I even been to Canada, and when I showed the officer some of the stamps from previous visits to the country I was off.
Very nice report, thank you for shearing. LH service looks very professional.

I thought I recognized that registration. I am pretty sure it is the "Memmingen", which gave me a ride in the other direction last August (from FRA to AMS).
Glad that your delay at AMS did not cause you problems with the connection in FRA.

So next one was already in when you still had to go?
Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter): During the flight the crew announced that the planes will wait for them if needed and not to worry about their connection.
Very good. These little things make a decent carrier stand out from the rest.

Great report, enjoyed reading it. Do you have any further images from Toronto (that you could perhaps put in the next report )? I'm visiting next month myself, so would be good to get a recent impression.
By the way, I did go back and check, and your ride from AMS to FRA was indeed the same LH 735 as I had from FRA to AMS last year. In my case it was an unscheduled encounter with the "Memmingen", caused by weather related cancellations, and detailed in the report: Taking The "scenic Route" To Amsterdam! BLL To AMS (by dkdaviator Aug 26 2011 in Trip Reports) . Glad to hear that it was still in a nice condition and served you well.

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 20): Yep, FRA's a great airport, especially airside
indeed!
Quoting Sultanils (Reply 20): That's one thing I like very much on the A346 series. No congregation at the toilets in your seat"s vicinity
