Mileage Run In Blue1 Premium: OUL-HEL-OUL-HEL-OUL

As I mentioned in my previous trip report, I had a mileage run coming up and here's a trip report Blue1 Premium Domestic: OUL-HEL-OUL (by odo Mar 15 2012 in Trip Reports) of that.

In short:
1 day
4 flights in Blue1 Premium
4 qualifying flights
4800 basic points
8000 extra points from point booster campaign

Total cost was about 250 euros.

After arriving to Oulu Airport it was apparent that there were insane queues(as in reaching out of the terminal building) at security check. Luckily we could use the Fast Track security and got through without any wait at all. Finavia should do better queue management here.

While it's nice that Oulu airport now has jetways to board the aircraft, Finavia could have installed larger windows or completely glass side into them. Current ones have a bit cramped feel to them.

I was travelling with a friend who already has the EB Gold so we headed to the SAS lounge.

Boarding…this would be my first flight in a -500 series ATR and first ATR in 15+ years.



Seats turned out to be very nice, even for a very large person like me.

Approach to Oulu was bumpy as expected. Winds were from 170 degrees, 17 knots and gusting to 24 knots as we were landing to runway 12.

I managed to stay in the aircraft during entire turnaround as cabin crew arranged my "boarding" with the dispatcher without me leaving the aircraft.

They had a different meal on this flight, chicken with some pasta(hidden bellow the salad). I really liked the pasta with lots of herbs used in the seasoning. Chicken in this kind of meal gets too dry to be really good.

A long cruise to HEL. I managed to think only one thing that's really a downside in an ATR. They're slow.

During approach to HEL, we managed to score a parallel approach with Finnair Airbus A320. We got runway 22R, long time since I've last landed there.

Getting off. These really were 2 great flights. The crew was just about the best there is and I had a great time in the air and during turnaround at Oulu. The atmosphere was really relaxed and enjoyable.



We had few hours until our return to Oulu and decided to go the restaurant Fly Inn, located in terminal 2 at Helsinki Airport.

Fly Inn offers some nice views to the apron while you're dining.

While getting through my dessert, this aircraft taxied past. Ukraine Internatinal Airlines Antonov An-148. Not very common sight. Also sporting the carriers revised livery.

Food on this flight was the same as on the first ATR flight. Ham & penne pasta.

Premium was rather empty with only few passengers but economy was almost full.

Due to darkness in the approach I didn't manage to catch any more photos.

PS. this 4 leg day was too easy, I'm hoping to do 6 or 8 leg day in the near future. ;D

I've never really understood why people kept comparing about the security queues at OUL and the need for Fast Track there as every time I've gone through there have been very moderate queues. But I guess I've never really gone through during this early morning rush hour. Your description sounds quite bad! Another good perk of EBG then!

Really? Being 181 cm tall I find those ATR seats quite uncomfortable and cramped. It is just about passable when you have no seat mate, but with someone sitting next to me it is almost unbearable. A HEL-OUL stretch is already pushing it a little. The same goes for the newer Finncom.. err sorry, flyBE Nordic ATR-72s with 72 seats. The older ones with 68 seats (i.e. one row less) are fine on this department (as well).

A great photo! I've been through exactly one parallel approach at HEL, albeit from the other direction onto 04R. They look amazing.

Ahh, I bet you had that one special girl working the ATR. I've only seen her on those flights and she's absolutely fabulous. Extremely friendly, courteous and with terrific sense of humor.

When doing a same plane turnaround in Premium at OUL in March I noticed the same thing. I asked the purser about it and she confirmed that they always load different meals for the inbound and outbound legs - I guess to cater for us weirdos flying the same plane both ways  .

Yeah, only reason I did this was because of 4 legs, not going to bother anymore unless there's something special.

95% of the time it's just fine, but on some mornings the queues are just plain horrible.

I'm only 168cm tall but width is another matter. Legroom isn't an issue for me almost never. Seat width and armrest design matter more for my feel of space than legroom.

I was cursing a bit having only p&s camera at hand at the time. My 60D with 70-200mm tele glass was in the overhead bin...
