Dear fellow A.Netters, welcome to my latest set of travels.

The route planner looks like this

After having achieved a flight on the Korean Air A380 in 2011 I my sights turned to the latest operator of this huge machine, China Southern.

Unlike previous A380 flights, this would be a first for me, flying an A380 on a domestic route.

I set up Kayak up to keep me informed daily of flight costs to various destinations in China and the surrounding areas. I had initially planned to take China Eastern to PEK via PVG, however it dawned upon me I could actually get to PEK via HND on a 787, assuming the things we actually delivered!

Given the uncertainty of the 787 deliveries and if services would actually happen, I took a while to book it, but eventually on January 21st I bit the bullet and bought the tickets on LH.com, they were significantly cheaper than booking the same flights through ANA.

Once booked, a raft of other bookings followed to get me where I needed to be, funnily enough the main object of the trip was one of the last flights to be booked.

To visit China you of course need a visa, rather than take a day off of work and head to London, I enlisted the help of Trailfinders to sort the visa for me, whilst not the cheapest way of getting one, they are efficient and a few days later I had my visa.

Fast forward to February 22nd.

Mrs BA319-131 was one again kind enough to drop me off.

Terminal 5 today as BA were taking me to FRA the night before.

There are two flights that leave LHR with sufficient time to check-in for the flight to HND, but I figured a slight delay and I could be in trouble, especially as they were on different tickets, so I felt it best to get there the night before.

I had used some IHG points and secured a room at a Holiday Inn which was located close to FRA.

Check-in for BA914 had been done early in the day on my phone, security was quick and painless and there's was no queue at the money exchange in the BA lounge, all good.

I decided to visit the South lounge today, I'm usually in the North since 99% of the time the BA domestic flights operate from the gates below it, I spend quite a bit of time heading to Scotland during the year.

Validity of my access checked and I'm welcomed by name to the lounge, I've noticed the use of name increasing as of late, is this a new customer service enhancement?

The lounge is quite busy, as usual the decent window seats taken by people completely disinterested by what's outside them.

A few nibbles, drinks and after locating the ice cream, it's quite hidden, I was off to gate 6 for the flight, typical, right under the North lounge!

I'll spare you the flight details, you’ve read enough BA TR’s! - left early, landed early, a few G&T's, nice flight.

And outside to wait for the shuttle to the Holiday Inn Frankfurt North.

No idea why, but I got up at 06:00, seemed like a good idea the night before, the journey to the airport was what, 5 minutes? - oh we'll, here is FRA lower level at 07:05, a tad chilly but quite refreshing compared to the stuffy hotel I had previously been in.

Lots of flights on the board but I'm here too far ahead for my flight to appear yet.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110861.jpg

I had a look at the LH self service check-in machines

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110862.jpg

No use for my flight today though

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110863.jpg

The Lufthansa travel shop, nothing I fancied here today and what I did was too expensive.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110865.jpg

I decided to wander around and see if I could find a Starbucks…………..

No luck in T1 (though I later found one lurking close to the B gate area) so I headed over to T2 to check there plus I could have a look outside and see if I could see her.....

Yep! There she is, I was a bit slow with the camera, but there in the back behind the US Airways A330 tail she sits,JA805A, at this time of writing still the only international configured 787 flying.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110866.jpg

Being the only one, I had been concerned with here going tech, as had happened on a couple of occasions, but today, looks good so far.

Not much going on in T2, no Starbucks either, so decided to go to McDonalds for a small brekky, not for the food you know

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110870.jpg

but because of the big glass windows with views outside, though rather dark when I first appeared.

It's was quite murky outside, not much activity either so I nursed the coffee before heading back to T1, I figured that check-in would be opening soon.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110871.jpg

On the train back I managed to get some better pictures, well not much but I was ready this time!

These were taken with my trusty Panasonic DMC-ZS3 rather than a proper DSLR

Not a bad looking motor, for an Opel!

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110878.jpg

The ongoing strike is still affecting FRA operations, with the worlds economy in the state it's in, people should be thankful for a job, not looking for more money and benefits, wait until things improve and don't hold innocent people to ransom over it! – ok rant over!

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110877.jpg

heading over it was indeed open but quite deserted, though had 3 counters open, with no body ahead I was seen to straight away, a welcoming good morning, passport checked and moments later by boarding pass appeared with 29A still allocated to me.

I planned to take a picture of the check-in desks but there were so many staff and no customers, it just felt kind of wrong.

ANA 787 advertising in the terminal.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110880.jpg

With plenty of time ahead and nothing much to do I headed through security, this was quite a painless affair, I was through and airside, 08:50 local time.

No guess who owns this airport!

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110881.jpg

I had a good walk around, the B gates area is quite dull really, not a great selection of places to eat or drink, several high end shops that don't really appeal, all in all not a great place to spend time.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110885.jpg

In the distance my first 748 sighted, G-GSSE – thanks to Brewox for checking

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110884.jpg

Here is my gate

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110882.jpg
a LH A340-600 currently occupies it.

I decided to find a bar, en route I passed a casino, check out the advertising/branding - quite odd and unexpected!

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110886.jpg

So I found a bar and decided to nurse a beer, after, I'm on holiday right? - err actually no,I don't call it a holiday as that won't please the wife, I call it a quest or work

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110887.jpg

So sat here nursing this beer and continuing with this report, I must say I don't ever recall seeing so many attractive women in Germany before, it's quite impressive here today…..

Whilst nursing the beer I fired up my iPhone to send some work e-mails, I send two and got a text saying I had spend £20 on data roaming already, bugger, I'll be invoicing for that!

Beer finished, well I had another as the first was so good, I headed towards the gate, stopping en-route to pick up some refreshments before finding somewhere to sit in the gate area.

Refreshments and my 787 behind

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110892.jpg

I was not alone drinking beer at this hour, lots of what I presumed to be fellow passengers were swigging back beer as if today was their last on the planet.

At 10:40 there was a pre-boarding announcement in Japanese, German then English, along with boarding protocol, it advised boarding would start at 10:50, it actually started 5 minutes earlier than that

My seat mate was already seated when I arrived, will have to wait for a seat shot until we arrive @ HND.

Initial impressions are good, a nice clean designs, fabric colour and pattern is easy on the eyes, cabin as you can see is bright and airy - windows are huge, really noticeable bigger than anything else out there, very impressive!

The seatbelt sign was extinguished 15 minutes after departure, que the crew to head to the galley and passengers to use the facilities, me included.

There are no toilets at the rear of the aircraft, well there is one, but that is for crew use only, I assume it's a loo, there are three toilets located at the front of the rear Y section, and behind the small Y section of 3 rows, quite a nice little cabin that.

One interesting and read good feature is the toilet door, it swivels when you open it, so rather than taking up space opening out or in, it kind of glides open taking up less space, great idea, no idea why nobody thought of that until now – not that you can really tell in this pic!

Drinks and a bag of snacks were soon service, I took a G&T, note the gin is poured from a bottle, looked like Beefeater, a pre cut lemon is added then tonic poured in and a stirrer is added, this is located in a tub, all very organized, thankfully it was a decent 'shot' of gin.

So far I'm enjoying this ANA 787 experience, the seat is comfortable, the pitch is comfortable enough and I love the recline as you don't affect the person behind nor does the passenger in front affect you, I tell you, this should be standard in economy, helps make it more bearable.

Note the USB point is a great feature, it will charge an iPhone but not the iPad, so bear that in mind.

Things got a bit bumpy over the Baltic sea and beyond, I'm surprised the seat belt sign never came on, drinking your drink was getting quite interesting.

Trash was collected then dinner service started, looking at the options, just two, the Japanese option looked best for me, who wants seafood in a creamy sauce? Yuck!

Dinner was offered along with a drink, the meals offered as chicken or seafood, I took the chicken along with red wine.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1110998.jpg

Presentation was excellent, through that is expected from ANA. The food itself was pretty tasty. I ate pretty much everything, found it to be quite enjoyable.

Tea and coffee had been offered during the meal.

Service items cleared away I reclined and dropped off for a while...........awaking just over 3 hours our of FRA, finding the cabin in darkness and the windows dimmed, must admit I'd not expected the windows to be dimmed quite so early, after all it was early afternoon with 7 hours still to go!

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1120013.jpg

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1120014.jpg

With regard to the windows being dimmed, they really get dark, so much so you have trouble seeing the lights on each end of the wingtip. I myself am not so keen of this feature, one of the greatest pleasures of sitting in a window seat is looking outside at the cloud formations and the land far below, even at night, looking down on the lights in the cities below, so bright, is brings me great pleasure, this new technology takes that away from you, a simple pleasure it used to be, is this the price of this revolutionary new plane?, sad.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1120012.jpg

My seat mate took a toilet break, I took the opportunity to find red wine in the rear galley, it was curtained off so I poked my head through the gap I created, it seemed to cause some amusement to the two FA's who were having their break, wine in hand I thanked them and returned to my seat to write up the latest before a few pages of my book, the reading lights are very bright, I suspect they could annoy fellow passengers.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1120016.jpg

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1120017.jpg

Through the flight the crew were quite attentive, regular drinks runs along with prompt answering of call bells, I never used one myself, but the chap in 28A did, several times, there was an FA the in a matter of seconds, most impressive!

As Markus wood say, the crews were business friendly, but with plenty of smiles and they seemed pretty genuine too, nice to see as nothing worse than a fake smile.

Reading and red wine are my IFE

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1120018.jpg

I dropped into the galley again mid flight for another bottle of wine, there were a few snacks set up for passengers to help themselves, bananas, some small chocolate bars, Pringles and the same snack that had been handed out during the first drinks run.

I spent most of the flight reading my book, looking at the map, jotting comments of this TR and also managed a film on the IFE, I forget what it was called, directed and starred George Clooney, a film about the Ohio nomination for the Democratic party, pretty good film actually.

The mood lighting through the cabin is quite low key, there is a very light blue that runs atop of the overhead bins, it looks brighter in the picture than in reality.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1120022.jpg

Now I'm not sure if it was me or my imagination, but there seemed to be a gentle background electrical noise, it's not something I have come across before but I'm sure I could hear/sense it during the duration of the flight, it would be interesting to see if others notice this on their 787 flights, if not, I must be cracking up......

The most obvious lighting comes from the toilet area, when a toilet is occupied the lighting changes from green to red. The cabin mood lighting on this flight was pretty minimal, I've seen more on a few year old QR A330-200.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1120021.jpg

With just over 2 hours to go, the cabin lights were gently turned on, slowly increasing in brightness, a nice feature over the quite harsh instant lighting in planes of an older generation.

The turning on of the cabin lights was quite welcoming as it meant breakfast was not far away, I was feeling a bit hungry so it would be quite welcome.

The nice smelling hot towels were again distributed, this time they were hot.

Small cups of OJ were passed out after the towels.

Breakfast turned out to be pretty decent, in addition to some fruit, strawberry yoghurt and a roll there was a decent cheese omelette with portions of potato, broccoli and a kind of ratatouille of mushrooms, tomato sauce and what looked like courgette, all in all it was quite tasty and hit the spot.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1120027.jpg

Indeed, I was hungry

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20787%20FEB%202012/P1120028.jpg

Meal trays were cleared away promptly, now cruising at 41,000 ft and just over an hour and a half to go before our arrival, I think breakfast could have been served later.

It seemed to take quite a log time before we finally dropped some altitude and headed into HND, this may have been due to the arrivals sequence.

So descent started some 180m out of HND, the seat belt’s on sign came on at 06:05.

After clearing immigration I headed out and took the shuttle bus to the domestic terminal for some spotting before heading to NRT later in the day for my flight to PVG.

So the burning question, is this plane the revolution it is made out to be?

It depends.

She may be lighter, more fuel efficient and thus greener, always a good selling point, but the lower running costs won't equate to cheaper airfares, let's face it, the A380 has the lowest CASM out there, do you see cheaper

She may be lighter, more fuel efficient and thus greener, always a good selling point, but the lower running costs won't equate to cheaper airfares, let's face it, the A380 has the lowest CASM out there, do you see cheaper fares for flying from A to B on an A380, no.

The 787 may be a great plane for the airlines and it will undoubtedly off the opportunity to open up new point to point routes that were previously not possible, but I see the vast majority being used to simply replace existing aircraft, the 767,777,A330 & 340's that we fly on today, day in day out.

As a passenger, is she any better or more comfortable than aircraft in service today, I don't think so. Everything you can touch and see as a passengers can be or fitted in an existing design, the seats were great, but can easily be fitted into a 777 or A330, the mood lighting is nice, but you already find this in today's longhaul planes. Did I feel any more refreshed stepping of this bird compared to any other type? Not that I could noticeably feel.

Was she quieter that today's existing planes? Perhaps so on the outside but internally she is still quite loud, the A380 is still far quieter. Boeing need to take an Airbus apart to see what they do insulation wise.

Don't get me wrong, she is a nice plane and I love the 2-4-2 layout in economy, I'd be happy to fly on one again, especially if as spacious as the ANA configuration.

I hope you enjoyed the ride and pictures, feel free to drop a comment or ask a question.

Cheers

Hi Mark,
Very nice and enjoyable report, seems like you had a nice flight with the 787!

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
the B gates area is quite dull really, not a great selection of places to eat or drink, several high end shops that don't really appeal, all in all not a great place to spend time.

the same opinion I have of the B gates

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Head on she is not a bad looking girl.

Nice head on pictures!

and there's was no queue at the money exchange in the BA lounge, all good.

A cash exchange? Now that's quite an interesting feature to put in an airline lounge!

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
I took a while to book it, but eventually on January 21st I bit the bullet and bought the tickets on LH.com, they were significantly cheaper than booking the same flights through ANA.

How much did you pay for the ticket? When I searched at the LH and ANA website, the tickets were priced at €1000 rt on both sites, quite steep I'd say.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Validity of my access checked and I'm welcomed by name to the lounge,

Do BA require you to show the plastic along with the BP at the lounge reception, or is scanning the BP enough for them to let you inside?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
I must say I don't ever recall seeing so many attractive women in Germany before, it's quite impressive here today…..

Suppose you should've made a longer visit to Sweden that day   Then again, were any of those women spotted "cross the street hot"? (sorry couldn't resist  )

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Overhead vents and lights, nice to have vents on a wide body

Interesting they featured it on this aircraft. Many newer airbus planes don't have the overhead vents, for some reason.

I like the sound of that!
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):

Quite surprised they didn't serve the Häaggen Dazs ice cream. Suppose that must be something offered ex Japan only…

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):

Guessing with the electronic shades, there was no chance for you to un-dimm the windows, to get some extra light?

I believe the film you watched was called Ides or March. Quite a nice film actually, love George Clooney
Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 1):
but the lower running costs won't equate to cheaper airfares,

Well if you compare over the past 20 years, airfares have become significantly cheaper. What you pay for a Biz ticket today is what Y used to sell for 20 years ago. Flying a return trip to Asia for sometimes as cheap as €400 is really nothing to complain for (although I assume your ticket was more expensive). But I suppose with the oil prices about to escalate in the coming years, the low CSAM of these planes will over time help keeping the airfares as cheap as they are today.

Ahoy ba319-131!

Awesome trip report here! It's nice to see another work featuring another ANA 787-881. Plenty of nice photographs to go around too. And I see they featured that 'special livery' bottle that they dished out, they served drinks in '1st to Fly 787' cups back on NH 676 HIJ-HND. Looks like the Japanese really love decorating their beverage containers, huh?

Just a question though, did the tap in toilet/s of JA805A work for you? I was on JA801A in February and they 'cordoned' off the sink of the toilet in the rear.....

Regards,
Hafiz

great report about your 787 experience, I had been waiting for this one. NH's product on the bird looks really nice, but I'm not a fan of the interior colors in general. I prefer warmer colors.

To visit China you of course need a visa, rather than take a day off of work and head to London, I enlisted the help of Trailfinders to sort the visa for me, whilst not the cheapest way of getting one, they are efficient and a few days later I had my visa.

Ah, one major disadvantage when going to China...

The Lufthansa travel shop, nothing I fancied here today and what I did was too expensive.

Did you notice whether they sell LH branded baseball cap as well?

I love the recline as you don't affect the person behind nor does the passenger in front affect you, I tell you, this should be standard in economy, helps make it more bearable.

Very nice pictures, Mark. Love it! Thank you for sharing.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for a lovely report on the perhaps most innovative jetliner in recent history.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
however it dawned upon me I could actually get to PEK via HND on a 787

Yes, I have to say, I've been following Japanese aviation more closely since the 787 was introduced
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
To visit China you of course need a visa, rather than take a day off of work and head to London, I enlisted the help of Trailfinders to sort the visa for me, whilst not the cheapest way of getting one, they are efficient and a few days later I had my visa.

Ah, visas... Well, there are few things I dislike more than queueing, so anything to make the process less complicated is very welcome
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
There are two flights that leave LHR with sufficient time to check-in for the flight to HND, but I figured a slight delay and I could be in trouble, especially as they were on different tickets, so I felt it best to get there the night before.

Yeah, a very good idea. I'd've done the same.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
No idea why, but I got up at 06:00, seemed like a good idea the night before, the journey to the airport was what, 5 minutes?

How could getting up at 6 seem like a good idea? It sure doesn't seem that way to me, unless I'm flying at... 9 maybe... But that's personal preference
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Yep! There she is, I was a bit slow with the camera, but there in the back behind the US Airways A330 tail she sits,JA805A, at this time of writing still the only international configured 787 flying.

Mmmm... 787

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
I had a good walk around, the B gates area is quite dull really, not a great selection of places to eat or drink, several high end shops that don't really appeal, all in all not a great place to spend time.

So I've heard, FRA a place to avoid... Well, I'll see later this year. Never connected there before.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
So sat here nursing this beer and continuing with this report, I must say I don't ever recall seeing so many attractive women in Germany before, it's quite impressive here today…..

Maybe it's just the beer, who knows
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Head on she is not a bad looking girl.

Personally, I think other angles flatter her more. She looks quite submissive in that picture.
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
There are no toilets at the rear of the aircraft, well there is one, but that is for crew use only, I assume it's a loo, there are three toilets located at the front of the rear Y section, and behind the small Y section of 3 rows, quite a nice little cabin that.

A strange configuration, I suppose...

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Presentation was excellent, through that is expected from ANA. The food itself was pretty tasty. I ate pretty much everything, found it to be quite enjoyable.

Yes, the presentation looks very good. I'll take your word for it on the taste
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
With regard to the windows being dimmed, they really get dark, so much so you have trouble seeing the lights on each end of the wingtip. I myself am not so keen of this feature, one of the greatest pleasures of sitting in a window seat is looking outside at the cloud formations and the land far below, even at night, looking down on the lights in the cities below, so bright, is brings me great pleasure, this new technology takes that away from you, a simple pleasure it used to be, is this the price of this revolutionary new plane?, sad.

That's disappointing. My favorite thing to do on a night flight is to open the shades and just look at the sheer number of stars... There are few things that give me a sense of wonder, but I could look at the stars for hours... I'm not sure that starlight would get through considering wingtip lights can barely be seen...
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):

With just over 2 hours to go, the cabin lights were gently turned on, slowly increasing in brightness, a nice feature over the quite harsh instant lighting in planes of an older generation.

That's a good way to do it. Although I always could do with a bit more sleep myself
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Breakfast turned out to be pretty decent, in addition to some fruit, strawberry yoghurt and a roll there was a decent cheese omelette with portions of potato, broccoli and a kind of ratatouille of mushrooms, tomato sauce and what looked like courgette, all in all it was quite tasty and hit the spot.

Sounds quite decent. I'm not the biggest fan of breakfast foods but I wouldn't've gone hungry at least!

Thanks very much for sharing, Mark!

It was great to take a flight on the 787

Hi Mark

Great first part of your report. Very nice to see how the 787 was to HND.

I agree with you - if you're on separate tickets and there is a risk of mis connecting, I would have done the same thing and organised to fly in the day before if possible.

Interesting to hear your views about the 787 itself.

I was very alarmed to read that the crew can "centrally" control the window "shade" which means that during day flights, if you wanted to look out of the window and take the odd photo, you would be prevented from doing so because I understand that at your seat, you dont have the ability to override the crew controls? If that's the case, I will be avoiding the 787 for day flights - at least in the short term. I think that's a terrible "innovation" - I can never understand why crews insist on darkening the cabin on day flights. Not everyone wants to sleep on a day time flight, and if you do, that's what eye patches are for.

There are people on the plane who have paid good money (or at least the same money) to be able to look out of the window and crews seem to forget this. Not everyone is as jaded about flying as crews seem to think we all are - looking out of the window is still a great thrill for me when I am flying, no matter how many flights I have taken.

The recline seat design on the ANA 787s sounds interesting but as you say, this is something that could be included in existing aircraft, and as WideBodyRoga showed us on his recent Japan Travels - these seats are on the B777-300ERs.

Thanks again - and looking forward to Part II!

Hey Mark ,
Great report and photo and a nice insight into the B787 . Love the menus on the PTVS and the meals themselves.
Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 1):
As a passenger, is she any better or more comfortable than aircraft in service today, I don't think so. Everything you can touch and see as a passengers can be or fitted in an existing design, the seats were great, but can easily be fitted into a 777 or A330, the mood lighting is nice, but you already find this in today's longhaul planes. Did I feel any more refreshed stepping of this bird compared to any other type? Not that I could noticeably feel.

I tend to agree reading from other reviews. Nice aircraft but the hype was blown out of all proportion. I love the B777 and A380 personally. I will reserve final judgement til my B787 flight.

Regards

Philip

Hi Mark

Great report, thanks for giving us an insight about the 787 on a long haul route.
Based on pictures, I do agree with you! While it is a great aircraft it is not revolutionary, def not that much better than the current widebodies in the fleet. Glad ANA took good care of you.

Hi Mark,

Great to have another mega report underway. Congratulations for catching the 787. Did it still have the "new plane smell" in it?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Mrs BA319-131 was one again kind enough to drop me off.

You are pushing your luck, aren't you?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Check-in for BA914 had been done early in the day on my phone, security was quick and painless and there's was no queue at the money exchange in the BA lounge, all good.

Money exchange in a lounge? Seriously? Besides what currency do you exchange into seeing that you barely spend any time in any country  .

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
The lounge is quite busy, as usual the decent window seats taken by people completely disinterested by what's outside them.

Oh dear, I hate it when that happens. Which is very often, unfortunately.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
I'll spare you the flight details, you’ve read enough BA TR’s! - left early, landed early, a few G&T's, nice flight.

Well I think this sight has become the symbol for BA flights here - free flowing drinks, usually of the tonicy variety and some Dormen crackers  .

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Yep! There she is, I was a bit slow with the camera, but there in the back behind the US Airways A330 tail she sits,JA805A, at this time of writing still the only international configured 787 flying.

Not much going on in T2, no Starbucks either, so decided to go to McDonalds for a small brekky, not for the food you know

Yeah yeah, just like you buy Playboy for the articles.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Not a bad looking motor, for an Opel!

For a hybrid you mean! Certainly looks much classier than the ugliest car of last decade, Prius.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
The ongoing strike is still affecting FRA operations, with the worlds economy in the state it's in, people should be thankful for a job, not looking for more money and benefits, wait until things improve and don't hold innocent people to ransom over it! – ok rant over!

Well these words could've come straight out of my mouth (or fingers) - couldn't agree more with you. Can't really understand the unions and the crap they come up with - if things are going bad they seem oh so keen to make them even worse, all in keeping up with "earned benefits". My arse with them.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
No guess who owns this airport!

Errr, Fraport?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
I had a good walk around, the B gates area is quite dull really, not a great selection of places to eat or drink, several high end shops that don't really appeal, all in all not a great place to spend time.

See - this is why you need lounge access as the fancy new Senator lounge is just a hop, skip and a gold card away!
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
So I found a bar and decided to nurse a beer, after, I'm on holiday right? - err actually no,I don't call it a holiday as that won't please the wife, I call it a quest or work

Well these trips certainly don't feel like a holiday, it is hard work doing five or more legs a day, I can tell you that!

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
I was not alone drinking beer at this hour, lots of what I presumed to be fellow passengers were swigging back beer as if today was their last on the planet.

Ahh, gotta love Germany. Actually reminds me of the scene at ARN last Friday - it was barely seven AM and a ton of Swedes were chugging down beer like the prohibition was just around the corner.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Head on she is not a bad looking girl.

Wow, what a sleek bird. I'm surprised at how narrow she looks.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Seat 29A Economy

Not up to your normal standards, is it? How much was business?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Legroom seemed pretty decent though it was only 31”

Hmm, must be the design of the seat - that looks excellent.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Overhead vents and lights, nice to have vents on a wide body

Ahh, for some strange reasons many widebodies lack these. Nice. And good to see them following the latest Boeing standards, these same vents are also found on the Sky Interior 737NGs.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
before out turn to depart, when the juice kicks in she really leaps forward, you can feel the power in those wonderful RR engines, oh, and the noise, not as bad as a 777 mind.

Well that is the reason we all love these birds! Amazing power.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Inflight magazine detail

Spot any errors?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
There are no toilets at the rear of the aircraft, well there is one, but that is for crew use only, I assume it's a loo, there are three toilets located at the front of the rear Y section, and behind the small Y section of 3 rows, quite a nice little cabin that.

Hmm, that looks like the place to be if stuck in economy!

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Also, the handles built into the toilet seat are a great idea

But no fancy whizz bang Japanese toilets with more buttons than an aircraft cockpit?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Let’s have a quick play with the IFE to see what it has to offer

That route map is nice - it certainly rubs in the fact that HEL lies smack in the middle of most airways between Central Europe and Far East - something AY is trying very hard to exploit but thanks to their completely clueless management and military grade unions are having a hard time doing so!

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
The plastic 'glass' is quite sturdy, much better than the ones BA use.

Try the el cheapo flimsy Ryanair ones some day...

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Beautiful day outside for flying, this is the Oland Island off to the left, I’m sure P has been there…

Nope, actually never been to Öland. See, they don't have an airport there! Flown over it dozens (if not hundreds) of times, though.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Trash was collected then dinner service started, looking at the options, just two, the Japanese option looked best for me, who wants seafood in a creamy sauce? Yuck!

Me, me!

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Presentation was excellent, through that is expected from ANA. The food itself was pretty tasty. I ate pretty much everything, found it to be quite enjoyable.

Looks quite okay to me!

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Our location at meal time

Nice to see Estonia there - I'm just on my way back from a weekend spent there, including spending the last night in a town right underneath your flight path!

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
My seat mate took a toilet break, I took the opportunity to find red wine in the rear galley, it was curtained off so I poked my head through the gap I created, it seemed to cause some amusement to the two FA's who were having their break, wine in hand I thanked them and returned to my seat to write up the latest before a few pages of my book, the reading lights are very bright, I suspect they could annoy fellow passengers.

Lots of giggling in that classic Asian style?

Good to see those mini bottles of wine - no issues with portion size like with KE?
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Reading and red wine are my IFE

Ahh, the perfect IFE for me as well. Honestly I can't understand people whining about IFE being down or movies being last season. Have these people lost their ability to read (if they ever had it) or are they just too bloody working class to do so?!

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
With just over 2 hours to go, the cabin lights were gently turned on, slowly increasing in brightness, a nice feature over the quite harsh instant lighting in planes of an older generation.

You never slept on this flight, did you? And up at six? I'm afraid it is going to get back to you, mate, big time!

I see the vast majority being used to simply replace existing aircraft, the 767,777,A330 & 340's that we fly on today, day in day out.

Well, it seems. At least that is what the majority of customers have outlined so far. It is a very subtle niche that it would have had to filled. I agree with the end summary ... all the advances could have been achieved within the shells of other planes. Nothing seems to be vastly groundbreaking. That said, it looks like a sleek, comfortable aircraft for the next chapter in aviation. Looking forward to flying her one day...

Hi Mark!

Thank you for taking the time to write your detailed trip report! Your flight with ANA brings back many fond memories of my last experience with ANA which was on the L1011 many years ago. It's always refreshing to see a hot meal choice for breakfast on the International flights. Also, I love the cabin color scheme and the Club ANA Seat! I usually fly with Skyteam, but your ANA trip may win my business for my trip to ICN.

In regards to the Club ANA Seat, there is a similar product on Delta's 767-400 fleet in the Businesselite Cabin. Have you had a chance to try this seat? How would you rate it compared to the Herringbone Configuration? I've only flown on the 77L in BizElite and the 763 product, so I would like to hear your thoughts.

Thank you again!!!

Hello Mark,

Very nice story! Congrats on logging the 787 so soon. From the outside the main thing I like is the sharp nose and the shape of the engine cowling. I do find it to be a quite small plane, comparing it maybe to a 767. And indeed as you say: that cabin could easily fit into another existing type. Still there are some minor ‘gadgets’ that look cool and modern (lavatory lights from green to red etc.)

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
The lounge is quite busy, as usual the decent window seats taken by people completely disinterested by what's outside them.

Business blue I call that. Not too appealing at first sight. Quite modern design with the rectangular shapes.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
I'm afraid I never managed to catch them.

Due to your Japanese being very limited?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Inflight magazine detail

They have quite a varied fleet.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):

Yes, that looks a nice and tranquil area. Just plain Y class there?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Also, the handles built into the toilet seat are a great idea

So if you want germs: pick ‘em up there

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
With regard to the windows being dimmed

Annoying. Does the crew overrule the dimming then or are you able to do it yourself?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
I forget what it was called, directed and starred George Clooney

It’s called ‘Ides Of March’

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
The 787 may be a great plane for the airlines and it will undoubtedly off the opportunity to open up new point to point routes that were previously not possible, but I see the vast majority being used to simply replace existing aircraft, the 767,777,A330 & 340's that we fly on today, day in day out.

Next question maybe is to see what Airbus will do with it’s A350?

Greetings Mark,

Many thanks for such a wonderful report. I've been trying to catch a ride on the 787, but in the mean time, your report has certainly helped to appreciate the wonderful new plane.

From the pictures, it appears that the plane itself isn't 'that different' from your 777s and 767s, but I too look forward to trying it out, especially on ANA. I've only flown them a few times, but their service is, probably the best I've experienced. I still wish I lived in Japan! I flew them from NRT to HNL in Economy, and honestly, the service was on-par with US Business standards, in terms of the quality of the meal and better, in many cases, then the service standard.

Thanks again!

Hi All, thanks for your reads and comments.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 7):
Since you told me about your visa application and your stay at the FRA holding room, I was looking forward to reading your 787 experience.

- Hi Suryo, finally published, thanks for reading.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 7):
Were you directed to LH website by Kayak?

- Yep.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 7):
Did you notice whether they sell LH branded baseball cap as well?

- Sorry, never noticed.

so decided to go to McDonalds for a small brekky, not for the food you know

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with McDonalds.

err actually no,I don't call it a holiday as that won't please the wife, I call it a quest or work

How considerate of you.

- Gotta keep the wife on side
Quoting akhmad (Reply 7):
Ouch! Could you switch off data roaming function on your iPhone?

- You can and I did after sending those e-mails, thankfully my work one kicked in after that and worked fine.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 7):
Oh no, not Heineken!

- It's not that bad!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 7):
No battery charger?

- Not that I saw, might have missed it though.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 7):
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Also, the handles built into the toilet seat are a great idea

Can it be a standard toilet design? Pretty handy.

- Could be, a great idea I thought.

I love the recline as you don't affect the person behind nor does the passenger in front affect you, I tell you, this should be standard in economy, helps make it more bearable.

The padding is better than CX’s fixed hard shell, I assume.

- Not tried the CX seat but from what I've read, yes.

How about seafood in a creamy lime coconut sauce? Anyway, I would have gone for the Japanese option as well.

- I know, just seemed clever that the time, wrong!

Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 8):
I've heard, FRA a place to avoid... Well, I'll see later this year. Never connected there before

- I have a few times, it's not that great especially on short connection times.

Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 8):
That's disappointing. My favorite thing to do on a night flight is to open the shades and just look at the sheer number of stars... There are few things that give me a sense of wonder, but I could look at the stars for hours... I'm not sure that starlight would get through considering wingtip lights can barely be seen...

- I'm with you on the starts, but with the shades darkened you won't see them.

Quoting nethkt (Reply 9):
Thank you for a nice and neat Boeing 787-8 review.

- Thanks, glad you enjoyed.

Quoting nethkt (Reply 9):
I suspect you may want a Rimowa from that LH shop!

- They are quite nice.........

Quoting palmjet (Reply 10):
Great first part of your report. Very nice to see how the 787 was to HND.

- Cheers
Quoting palmjet (Reply 10):
I agree with you - if you're on separate tickets and there is a risk of mis connecting, I would have done the same thing and organised to fly in the day before if possible.

- Good, glad I'm not alone
Quoting palmjet (Reply 10):
I was very alarmed to read that the crew can "centrally" control the window "shade" which means that during day flights, if you wanted to look out of the window and take the odd photo, you would be prevented from doing so because I understand that at your seat, you dont have the ability to override the crew controls?

- Correct, once the crew dim them that's it.

Quoting palmjet (Reply 10):
I think that's a terrible "innovation"

- Agreed!

Quoting palmjet (Reply 10):
I can never understand why crews insist on darkening the cabin on day flights. Not everyone wants to sleep on a day time flight, and if you do, that's what eye patches are for.

- I'm with you brother.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 11):
Great report and photo and a nice insight into the B787

- Thanks Philip
Quoting OA260 (Reply 11):
Nice aircraft but the hype was blown out of all proportion.

- Well put.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 11):
I love the B777 and A380 personally

- A380 yes, don't like 777's really, try to avoid them where possible.

Quoting MSS658 (Reply 12):
Great report, thanks for giving us an insight about the 787 on a long haul route.

- Thanks for reading Marc.

Quoting MSS658 (Reply 12):
While it is a great aircraft it is not revolutionary

- It may be from an engineering view but certainly not from a passengers view.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
Great to have another mega report underway

- Thanks
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
Did it still have the "new plane smell" in it?

- Yep and felt factory fresh too!

Mrs BA319-131 was one again kind enough to drop me off.

You are pushing your luck, aren't you?

- Don't I know it......

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
Money exchange in a lounge? Seriously? Besides what currency do you exchange into seeing that you barely spend any time in any country

- Funny, the only money spent in Japan was getting the bus from HND to NRT.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
The lounge is quite busy, as usual the decent window seats taken by people completely disinterested by what's outside them.

Oh dear, I hate it when that happens. Which is very often, unfortunately.

- I know, why is that?

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
I'll spare you the flight details, you’ve read enough BA TR’s! - left early, landed early, a few G&T's, nice flight.

Well I think this sight has become the symbol for BA flights here - free flowing drinks, usually of the tonicy variety and some Dormen crackers

- True, GC and I can attest to that

Not a bad looking motor, for an Opel!

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
I had a good walk around, the B gates area is quite dull really, not a great selection of places to eat or drink, several high end shops that don't really appeal, all in all not a great place to spend time.

See - this is why you need lounge access as the fancy new Senator lounge is just a hop, skip and a gold card away!

- One can only wish for that

So I found a bar and decided to nurse a beer, after, I'm on holiday right? - err actually no,I don't call it a holiday as that won't please the wife, I call it a quest or work

Well these trips certainly don't feel like a holiday, it is hard work doing five or more legs a day, I can tell you that!

- I know, was totally knackered at the end of this trip, still went to work the next day though.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
I was not alone drinking beer at this hour, lots of what I presumed to be fellow passengers were swigging back beer as if today was their last on the planet.

Ahh, gotta love Germany. Actually reminds me of the scene at ARN last Friday - it was barely seven AM and a ton of Swedes were chugging down beer like the prohibition was just around the corner.

- Love the prohibition bit

Seat 29A Economy

Not up to your normal standards, is it? How much was business?

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
There are no toilets at the rear of the aircraft, well there is one, but that is for crew use only, I assume it's a loo, there are three toilets located at the front of the rear Y section, and behind the small Y section of 3 rows, quite a nice little cabin that.

Hmm, that looks like the place to be if stuck in economy!

- Yep, nice and cozy cabin there.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Also, the handles built into the toilet seat are a great idea

But no fancy whizz bang Japanese toilets with more buttons than an aircraft cockpit?

- Nope, wait until you get to the airport toilet

Try the el cheapo flimsy Ryanair ones some day...

- Err NO.

Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
Beautiful day outside for flying, this is the Oland Island off to the left, I’m sure P has been there…

Nope, actually never been to Öland. See, they don't have an airport there! Flown over it dozens (if not hundreds) of times, though.

- I suspect hundreds is more likely.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
Lots of giggling in that classic Asian style?

- Ah you know it well
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
Good to see those mini bottles of wine - no issues with portion size like with KE?

Ahh, the perfect IFE for me as well. Honestly I can't understand people whining about IFE being down or movies being last season. Have these people lost their ability to read (if they ever had it) or are they just too bloody working class to do so?!

- We are on the same wavelength here P.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 13):
Quoting ba319-131 (Thread starter):
With just over 2 hours to go, the cabin lights were gently turned on, slowly increasing in brightness, a nice feature over the quite harsh instant lighting in planes of an older generation.

You never slept on this flight, did you? And up at six? I'm afraid it is going to get back to you, mate, big time!

- I got a few hours, not much though, I was very tired on the next flight that evening I must admit.

Quoting lukeyboy95 (Reply 14):
Excellent review of the 787!

Quoting lukeyboy95 (Reply 14):
Amongst the founding reports... to think one day we will be sick of them. But for now this is a rare gem.

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 17):
Thank you for the very detailed tr! the 787 looks like a fantastic way to fly LH in Y.

- Ha, indeed!

Quoting AirAfreak (Reply 18):
Your flight with ANA brings back many fond memories of my last experience with ANA which was on the L1011 many years ago.

- Wow that was a while back!

Quoting AirAfreak (Reply 18):
I usually fly with Skyteam, but your ANA trip may win my business for my trip to ICN.

- Go for it, I find ANA pretty decent, the regional JCL is good too.

Quoting AirAfreak (Reply 18):
In regards to the Club ANA Seat, there is a similar product on Delta's 767-400 fleet in the Businesselite Cabin. Have you had a chance to try this seat?

- Yes, flew a DL 764 in JCL from JFK-LHR back in 2010 I think it was.

Quoting AirAfreak (Reply 18):
How would you rate it compared to the Herringbone Configuration? I've only flown on the 77L in BizElite and the 763 product, so I would like to hear your thoughts.

- Thought it was ok, much better than any herringbone seat I have had.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 19):
Very nice story!

- Cheers
Quoting sultanils (Reply 19):
From the outside the main thing I like is the sharp nose and the shape of the engine cowling. I do find it to be a quite small plane, comparing it maybe to a 767

- Size wise it is pretty close to a 767

Quoting sultanils (Reply 19):

I've been trying to catch a ride on the 787, but in the mean time, your report has certainly helped to appreciate the wonderful new plane

- Thanks. glad it was of use.

Quoting chopchop767 (Reply 20):
From the pictures, it appears that the plane itself isn't 'that different' from your 777s and 767s

- Correct.

Quoting chopchop767 (Reply 20):
but I too look forward to trying it out, especially on ANA. I've only flown them a few times, but their service is, probably the best I've experienced. I still wish I lived in Japan! I flew them from NRT to HNL in Economy, and honestly, the service was on-par with US Business standards, in terms of the quality of the meal and better, in many cases, then the service standard.

- ANA are good, even in Y, I can understand why they can get away with charging more in some markets.
