Hello everyone and welcome to my 6th trip report!
This trip report is part 2 of my weekend trip to Toronto during Easter. It will cover my little stay in Toronto and the journey back: YYZ-FRA-AMS. This is the link to Part 1: To Toronto For The Weekend Pt. 1: AMS-FRA-YYZ (by adamspotter Apr 12 2012 in Trip Reports)
The map thanks to gcmap.com:
I left part 1 with me falling asleep at 9 o’clock in my very comfortable hotel bed. 10.5 hours later and I was wide awake at 07:30. Watched some TV, listened to some music and in no time it was 09:30. Took a nice bath and went downstairs to try the breakfast buffet at the Yonge Street Grill Marriott restaurant. The buffet was very nice with lots of choices. After finishing my very big breakfast, I went back upstairs to get my camera and other belongings. The view from my room:
Now it was time to go visit the CN tower! That meant a walk of about 30 min. No problem for me as I walk fast (being 2m long) and it was very nice weather! Some views on my way:
Some nice and tall buildings, one being of the Dutch company KPMG:
The CN tower already in sight!:
Almost there!:
The sun nicely behind it:
Once arriving at the CN tower it was quite busy with lots of tourists. Went over to the ticket desk and decided to go for the whole tour, which includes: the Look Out, Glass Floor, Sky Pod, Movie and Motion Theatre Ride. Total costs for this tour is: 35,99CD. After paying the cashier, off it was to the elevators! First my ticket got checked by a very friendly employee. Then it’s off to the next checkpoint where everybody gets their picture taken. After that it’s off to security, which means a full body scan. After having my ticket being checked once more I am directed to one of the 4 lines in front of one of the 4 elevators. The gift shop:
15 minutes later I was in the elevator and up we went! In no time I arrived at the first part of my tour: The Lookout! As it was nice weather we had a very nice view of Toronto and further. I’ll let the pictures do the talking:
And of course Toronto City Centre Airport:
Close up on the terminal:
Off to the 2nd part of the tour: the Glass Floor. I didn’t dare to stand on it as I have a slight fear of heights. Did get this picture though, pretty high I must say!:
You could also walk around outside where it was quite windy:
Off to the 3rd part of the tour: the Sky Pod. That meant going even higher with the elevator! First I had to stand in a very long line. Some interesting facts about the CN tower:
After 30 min I finally reached the only elevator and up I went once again. This elevator was a bit smaller than the other one and carries about 8 people each time. Once reaching the Sky Pod my fear of heights really came to me so took a picture and went straight down to the Look out again:
After having seen everything I decided to go back down and do the last 2 parts of my tour. Stood in line and after 5 min I got to cut the line as there was still room for 1 more person in the elevator and there were only families/couples in front of me (one of the good things of travelling alone).
When reaching the ground floor I switched to another elevator which took me one floor under the ground. I have now reached the 4th part of the tour: The Motion Theatre Ride. This time the theme was called: Himalamazon. It was a fun ride!
After that I walked over to the last part of the tour: The 3D movie. The movie showing this time was called: Ultimate Wave Tahiti which I also enjoyed watching.
Now the tour was over and it was time to leave this nice tower. Before going back to the hotel I had to walk past the Rogers Centre, home of the Toronto Blue Jays:
One more picture of this amazing tower:
I walked back to the hotel and hung around in my room watching some TV. Around 4 o’clock I went back outside to do some shopping. Plenty of shopping options in the neighborhood including the nice Toronto Eaton Centre shopping mall. After buying some clothes I went back to the hotel to drop everything off. Now it was time to eat, after having already eaten at the Marriott restaurant Friday night I decided to walk around and look for a nice restaurant. I decided to go to an old fashioned fast food restaurant called Johnny Rockets. Had some chicken tenders and fries which was quite tasteful.
After that it was off to the Shoppers 24hr drug mart to buy some bottles of A&W root beer and Dr. Pepper, that’s the good stuff!
After arriving at my hotel I went over to the “Business Centre” to do the online check in for my flight the next day: YYZ-FRA. Went to the reception desk to extend my check out to 2 pm (normal check out is at 12 pm) for the next day as my flight wasn’t leaving till 18:40 and spent the rest of the night in my room watching some TV and falling asleep at 12 o’clock.
10 hours later I woke up after yet again a very nice sleep. Watched some TV, took another bath and started packing my bag. Then I went back downstairs to check in online for my other leg: FRA-AMS. After doing that I went to the Marriott restaurant one more time to enjoy a special Easter brunch buffet! Again a wide selection with lots of choices. Being very full I went back upstairs to pack the rest of my bag and get ready to check out.
Just before 2 o’clock I checked out at the reception and walked outside where there was a taxi waiting for me. Half an hour later, 4h20min before my departure time I arrived at Toronto Pearson Int’l airport. Paid the taxi driver and proceeded into the terminal. Aisle F for me:
A short walk and I was at the Lufthansa/Austrian check-in counters. There was no line so it was my turn right away and 5 minutes later I had my BPs and my baggage checked in all the way to AMS by the very friendly ground agent. The FIDS:
The nice check-in area:
After taking the pictures I proceeded to security. Once I arrived, there was nobody in line and I was through within a couple of minutes without a hassle, nice! I then proceeded through a glass corridor (the same type where I arrived at a couple days before) with the domestic gates below. Took a quick picture of these AC birds waiting at the gate for their next flight before proceeding onto the walkway:
At YYZ you have a “normal” walkway(left) and an “express” walkway(right):
At the end of the corridor I took an escalator down and have now arrived at the E-gates Int’l terminal. There you can find duty free shops and some places to eat including of course Tim Hortons.
AC 777 all ready for the very long journey to PEK:
This AC 777 was heading to FRA and left 1h10min before my departure time:
My flight already on the screen at my departure gate:
Gate E79 will be the gate used for my flight later on:
Part of the gate area:
Before settling down to do some spotting I visited some of the duty free shops and ended up buying some very nice earphones. After doing that I settled down on a chair very close to the windows to do some spotting while listening to music.
C-GGND a pretty fresh AC express Dash 8 being delivered on 09/12/2011:
AC A330 arriving at the gate:
AC A320 C-FZUB:
MQ CRJ7 N509AE:
AC Jazz CRJ2 and AA 737 cross paths:
Pretty cool to see a Transavia scheme in YYZ, too bad it didn’t taxi in front of me:
AC A319 C-GBHR taxiing to the gate. It will later depart to MEX:
AC A330 C-GFUR being towed to the gate:
AC Jazz Dash8 C-FABA:
AC EMB190 C-FGLW:
AC 767 C-FMWV:
Soon enough I saw my aircraft arriving right on time. It took a while before it finally reached the gate as it had to wait, and finally taxi past quite a few waiting aircraft at the runway to depart:
I proceeded to my gate to get a closer look, D-AIHB will be doing the honors for me today:
The remaining time I stood near the gate listening to some music and waiting for the boarding call. At the gate next to us there was a 9W flight to BRU and then DEL. Everybody had boarded 20 min prior to departure time except for 2 people who they were calling many times. At last they arrived right at departure time. The whole gate area and surroundings was full of people meaning that this was going to be quite a full flight. A delay was announced of 15 min and at 18:25 boarding finally commenced.
As always I was one of the last to board:
When finally boarding the aircraft I was kindly greeted by a female FA and showed my BP. Through the galley to the 2nd aisle and I arrived at my seat: 35K. There was an elderly women sitting next to me. The view from my seat:
My PTV which I had to press on a couple of times before I wanted to open something during the whole flight:
Boarding was completed, the load being at about 90% with just a couple of spare seats in the forward and rear economy section. The lady next to me moved to another seat where she had more room and gave me more room to stretch my legs, very nice. A nice welcome from the cockpit with an announced flying time of 7hrs and we finally pushed back 30 minutes late at 19:10. A bunch of regional jets at their gates:
The safety demonstration was being played on the PTVs:
Passed a bunch of AC heavies:
During taxi I heard someone talking very loudly. When I looked behind me there was a mentally challenged man sitting behind me with his wife (or woman he was travelling with) next to him. During taxi, take-off and the first half of our flight he kept talking/screaming quite loudly which the fellow passengers found quite disturbing, I felt very sorry for his wife as she tried to calm him down the whole time, but more on that later.
It was rush hour at YYZ which meant a lot of stopping/waiting:
Listening to one of my favorite songs at this moment: Gotye – Somebody that I used to know:
Half an hour after push back we lined up on the runway and started take-off roll:
And lift off!:
We straight away took a right turn:
The woman that was sitting next to me came back to her seat, as it was very cold where she was sitting more up front. Too bad as I now had less space to stretch my legs, but oh well. I had a nice chat with her explaining my hobby, which she found very interesting, and showed her the steps downstairs to the lavatories as she had no idea where they were after looking for them before. The sun was slowly beginning to set:

The flight deck kept the seatbelt sign on for a while due to some very light/moderate turbulence:
The Lufthansa Media World was the same as my flight to YYZ 2 days before so I decided to watch Johnny English Reborn:
The seatbelt sign got turned off and the crew began their preparations for the drinks/snack and meal service. It was almost fully dark outside by now:
Johnny English Reborn with Arabic subtitles (which you couldn’t switch off) very interesting:
Legroom shot:
The crew was now passing by with a little snack and with that I got a coke:
Seatback:
After the snack the crew came around with an hot towel:
While the man behind me was still being loud a fellow passenger went over to one of the attendants to tell about the whole situation. The attendant went over to him and asked him to please be quieter, as some others had done before already. 10 minutes later and the situation still unchanged an elder female purser came over from one of the front cabins. She walked over to the couple and talked to them very strictly. Apparently before boarding the plane, the purser had a chat with them together with the pilot to see if he was eligible enough to fly. After making an agreement with the wife that he will settle down and fall asleep during the flight the pilot decided to let them board.
After making her point clear a couple of times (making the agreement that after the meal he will fall asleep) she explained the situation to some other passengers sitting close and apologized repeatedly. I also had a short chat with her, she apologized repeatedly and explained that there are some spare seats throughout the cabin and if I wish I can move to one of them. With none of the seats being a window seat I decided to wait for after the meal and if the situation was still the same I would then move to one of those seats.
Anyway, by now it was supper time. Don’t remember what the other choice was but I went for the chicken which tasted quite ok:
During the meal there was an announcement maid that due to a lot of passengers’ PTV not working they were going to reset the whole system which will take about 10-15 min. We were now over the Atlantic with 4h20min to go at FL380:
By now the PTVs were working again, although not all of them as I saw a couple of fellow passengers whose PTV still wasn’t working. The crew cleared everything away. I noticed a lot of passengers having trouble putting their tables away, as you really had to force it quite hard before it clicked back up. The crew came around with duty free and after that the lights were finally dimmed with just 3,5 hours to go. I finished my movie and tried to get some sleep:
The moon outside:
I fell asleep and woke up when we were above Ireland now with just 1,5 hours of flying to go at FL360. Just seconds after I woke up the lights also came back on in the cabin:
The crew came around with a hot towel so I freshened myself up a bit:
The sun was starting to rise with the moon still visible:
While more and more people were starting to wake up I took some more pictures of the sunrise:
The crew came around with breakfast. A raisin cake, with cranberries and yoghurt. Together with that I got an OJ and coffee:
It was getting lighter and lighter outside:
Really like the outcome of this shot. The sun shining on the winglet with the moon still there:
Listened to Queens’ greatest hits as we were getting closer and closer to FRA:
Soon enough we started our descent:
The cabin:
Getting closer to the clouds:
Through the clouds with just 20min to go:
Connecting flights came onto the PTV:
And into final approach:
Not the greatest weather as you can see:
Touchdown on runway 25R in rainy FRA:
Taxiing to the gate:
ANA 787:
Parked at the B gates:
The 2 doors were opened quickly, bid the crew farewell and walked into the terminal. Got this nice picture of our aircraft:
First I went through passport control which was quite busy. I then followed the connecting flights signs to the A gates meaning going through security and walking through the long pedestrian walkway. For the remaining time I decided to wait at one of the gates and help myself with a couple of espressos at the Lufthansa self-service stands.
10 minutes prior to my boarding time of 10:45 I proceeded to my gate for this last leg which was A24. Once arriving at the gate and looking at the aircraft I saw it was D-ABIL , the same aircraft I started this whole journey off with 3 days ago!:
Boarding started at 10:55 and I was once again one of the last to board the plane. Was greeted by 2 female FAs and proceeded to my seat 14A. It was a pretty full flight at once again about 90%. The view from my seat:
A greeting from the cockpit with an announced flying time of 45min and we pushed back right on time. 2 United planes getting ready for their journey back over the pond:
Gate A24:
We taxied over to runway 25C:
RO A318:
Did you know LH was the main carrier here?:
ANA 787 & AC A330:
A nice line of planes/liveries:
We lined up on 25C with an EY A330 lining up behind us further back on the runway:
And there we go!:
And up we are:
Legroom shot:
Some nicer weather up here:
The crew consisted of 2 female FAs and 1 female Purser. When the seatbelt sign switched off they sprung into action. Snack on this leg was a nice “Milchreis” together with that I got an OJ:
Soon enough we started our descent:
And into final approach to (of course) the “Polderbaan”:
Over the highway A9:
Close up on our contrail:
And touchdown!:
Landing on the Polderbaan means a long taxi to our gate:
The tower:
KL 77W in Sky Team livery:
KL MD11:
Over the highway A4:
KL 747:
KL regional jets at their remote stands:
Almost there at the empty B gates:
Our gate will be B17:
At our parking position:
Bid the crew farewell and went straight to the baggage claim area:
Waited for my bag, which came after about 10 minutes. My dad was kind enough to also pick me up and after a 15 minute drive I was back home again.
YYZ-FRA was an ok flight, not the best. A disturbing passenger the first half of the flight, some PTVs and tables not working correctly. The cabin was not the cleanest and a bit worn. Not much to say about FRA-AMS, just a usual flight. The city of Toronto and YYZ are very nice places and hope to visit them again soon!
This will conclude part 2 and my weekend trip to Toronto. Sorry that it took longer than I intended it to take. I hope you guys enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed making it. Comments/suggestions/questions are very welcome and much appreciated.

Hey Adamspotter,
Great trip reports of Toronto - they bring back memories of my own trip there 2 years ago. I am glad you enjoyed yourself there - it is a great city. I did the CN Tower too and went onto the glass floor - yes, trust me, that's not an easy thing to do especially if you look straight down!
The HV plane you saw in YYZ was flying for BW, Caribbean Airlines. In recent years BW have leased in planes from HV at peak periods. In the past HV have also leased some BW 737-800s for the summer, thus my memory in 2007 of being in Mallorca and seeing a BW 737-800 in the old steelpan livery taking off from there! Quite a sight - a truly tropical livery flying from another, somewhat far-removed, tropical locale.
Great memories of AMS too, which I visted last year. I flew in from CWL and the CityHoppers go from that ramp which is very busy. I managed to spot many of the regional fleet including several of the F100, which are soon to depart

I am glad you liked Toronto. As much I as I dislike that city after having lived there for 12 years before moving on, you TR kind of made me feel like visiting Toronto later this year when I visit my parents. I am sure I will get over it. You really got a lot in the weekend you were there. It has been 20 years since I went up the CN Tower and was going to go last time I was in Toronto, but not having the time had to take a rain cheque on that one. This was an excellent TR going to Toronto. I have to ask, what type of aircraft was the Transavia plane that you saw in YYZ?

Hi trintocan,
Thanks glad you enjoyed it, and glad to hear it brought back memories. It sure is a great city to visit. yeah hehe the glass floor was just to much for me, oh well..

Yes indeed it had the caribbean airlines titles on it. HV also leased one to Sun Country Airlines in this period. Really like those kind of hybrids!

thanks, glad you enjoyed my TR. Yes, I did as much as possible in the couple of days I was there, glad the weather was nice too, especially when I was up in the CN tower!

It was just one of Transavia's 737s. This one was being leased by Carribean Airlines for a period.

Hello Brendan,
Thanks for the nice story. Excellent pics of the Toronto CN Tower, the view from up there is great! Weren’t you able to go FRA-YYZ on LH and YYZ-FRA on AC? They’re both *A carriers and most likely codeshare on the route? But hey, getting the A346 is quite OK as well

Sad to follow these passenger story, not the thing what you like to have around such a nightflight.

Thanks a lot! Yes, enjoyed the view very much. Yeah I could of done that, but after flying AC to YYZ 4 years ago via LHR I decided to go with LH this time and the A346! Next time maybe AC again?
Quoting Sultanils (Reply 5): Nice view. How is that airport accessible?
Its accessible with a ferry, quite cool!

That's what I thought too, but apparentely not.

indeed, no it wasn't as the flight wasn't till 2.5 hours later
Quoting win1290 (Reply 12): Out of interest, why do you usually board the plane among the last?
I always find it amusing to see all those people hurry themselves in line as if the plane is leaving any second. And once everybody is through I walk nice and relaxed to the gate and into the aircraft. And mostly once I'm seated we are straight to go, no particular reason really

nice to see your return report up as well. Toronto is indeed a nice place to be, report from my side to follow in the next few months.
Sorry to hear about the small mishaps on the flight from YYZ, guess it can happen anytime. However that meal trays are still out 3 hours in the flight is quite long...

Great TR Adamspotter.
I especially enjoyed your pictures from YYZ and FRA. I've flown that route numerous times so it was interesting to read about your experience and perspective. Last time I flew LH from FRA to YYZ it was a A346 as well, I found LH's service to be significantly better than AC's on that route, especially the catering on the outbound-FRA leg.

Hey Brendan
Thanks for your two very nice trip reports and the great pictures of Toronto, glad to see you had a fun time.
Lufthansa's product looks good to me, meals seem ok and I'm glad that you now have PTV's in LH economy for the long hauls, some say that with Ipads and things like that these days, in flight entertainment isn't all that necessary anymore, but I think it's better when you don't have to carry anything extra that makes your personal space any more crowded with stuff.
With regards to your experience at immigration, well, I've traveled a bit with usually the same travel pattern of short trips. This because I can't usually afford to stay long, and because I can't leave my job for too many days either. The US may have a bad reputation for nasty immigration officers but the only time I've been given the "special treatment" was arriving in YUL from MUC (via IAD). While I do understand that being a young guy traveling alone for only a few days made me "fit the profile", it doesn't really help make being interrogated any less unpleasant.
For me it's not so much being interrogated or searched but the attitude that can sometimes come along with it. My bags are usually extensively searched by customs in Japan but I never mind because the officers have always done it in a very respectful way, I understand they have a job to do and I don't mind being searched as I have nothing to hide. The lady in Canada that I had the displeasure of meeting was tough and generally quite unpleasant on me, she sent me to secondary inspection but fortunately, the officer that questioned me there was a very nice guy who let me go after a few quick questions; the lady in customs also had to give me a second round of searching and questioning since I had the special mark on my form but she was nice and even had a laugh when I replied to her "Who are you visiting here in Montreal??" by shrugging my shoulders and saying "Umm.. the city??"
Thanks again for taking the time to post this and for the many nice pictures.
Quoting krisyyz (Reply 18): I especially enjoyed your pictures from YYZ and FRA. I've flown that route numerous times so it was interesting to read about your experience and perspective. Last time I flew LH from FRA to YYZ it was a A346 as well, I found LH's service to be significantly better than AC's on that route, especially the catering on the outbound-FRA leg.
Nice to know you fly this route often, my next trip to Canada I will try AC again as the last time I flew them was 4/5 years ago (LHR-YYZ-LHR) and I see/hear different stories about them.
Hi Ricardo,
Quoting SR117 (Reply 19): Thanks for your two very nice trip reports and the great pictures of Toronto, glad to see you had a fun time.
Thank you for the feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed both parts. It sure was a fun time, too short also but oh well
Quoting SR117 (Reply 19): Lufthansa's product looks good to me, meals seem ok and I'm glad that you now have PTV's in LH economy for the long hauls, some say that with Ipads and things like that these days, in flight entertainment isn't all that necessary anymore, but I think it's better when you don't have to carry anything extra that makes your personal space any more crowded with stuff.
Meals were indeed just fine for Y class. Yes I agree with you there, as I dont have an Ipad/laptop yet the PTV works just fine for me.
Quoting SR117 (Reply 19): With regards to your experience at immigration, well, I've traveled a bit with usually the same travel pattern of short trips.
Yeah I have had the same. Travelled many times to US/Canada everytime I was travelling alone I got the "special treatment" and when travelling with my dad no special treatment. Totally understandable as I would do the same if I were the immigration officer, being 21 years old and from Amsterdam.

I agree with you there, it's all about which way they treat you anyway nice to hear about your experience, thanks for sharing
