A varm welcome to you and thanks for reading my third trip report!
I have a mission and that mission is to fly all airlines that fly to Arlanda (ARN). At the moment I have flown 33 out of 62, but the thing is, new airlines are coming and going so this is not an easy task. But at the same time those things are making my hobby going and going and...
Well, beck to this report. There is one airline that I have tried to get on for several years now but our schedules have never been in synced. This airline is Ethiopian Airlines. They are flying ARN-FCO-ADD with a 757 and sometimes they are here with the 767. Sometime this summer they will quit the ARN-FCO leg and fly directly ARN - ADD. Arriving around midnight in FCO there's no chance for a "day"trip. Finally one day in April I'd manage to find a date where I was able to try out ET. I did reward my self with a oneway C-class ticket, I have read a lot of good stuff about ET C-class product and wanted to make my own opinion. This ticket was around 100-110€ more expensive then a Y ticket. When this one was booked I had find some way to get back home from FCO. I wasn't that fond of paying to much for this ticket because then it would be a very expensive 20h trip.. Luckily I found a Cimber Sterling ticket FCO-CPH for around 60€, new airline for me so I booked that one quickly. From CPH there's some choices to get to STO but I choose the cheapest and fastest way, Norwegian for 35€.
I arrived at ARN around 19:00 and headed directly to check in. I tried to do OLCI but it didn't work. I walked directly to the Businessclas counter and there I was no 2 in line. The lady in front of me had 5 overpacked bags that she wanted to check in. She was told to put her hand luggage on the scale and it showed 26kg so she had to re-arrange her packing. The check in lady asked if i traveled in C and I told her yes so she took care of me before continuing with the "baglady". The check in went smooth and after showing the card I booked the ticket with I was on my may to the lounge. As ET is a part of Staralliance you can use the SAS Business Lounge at ARN and as I'm an EBG I turned left in the Lounge to the Scandinavian Lounge. The difference between these two are that in the Scandinavian Lounge they serve a light meal and hard liquor. After about 1.5h it was time for boarding
This is the first time I'm boarding a plane flying intra-europe and have to turn left after entering the aircraft.
The seats was very comfortable for this 3h ride
Also the legroom was good even tough ET-AMK has the smallest pitch in ET 757 fleet. It was more then enough for me.
The legroom shot . And yes the red pants are still with me.
The welcome drink was either water, orangejuice or champagne.
I thought that the crew was a bit confused during the safety brief for example they told us that the aircraft had 4 emergency exits. If you only count one side they had been right... I thought for some seconds that maby this was an bad idea.. But when they apologized for the broken safety video and I understood that they aren't that used to do the manual demo.
After a powerful takeoff the service began.
Starter with shrimps, salmon, a ceasarsalad and of course champagne
I did choose the lamb for main course. It was tasty but salty, but it was really nice with an Ethiopian beer
Dessert with more champagne and beer. I did turn down the chocolate and cheese plate, it was too much food for me.
The old school buttons for the seat
The flight was very nice and the Captain talked a lot to us passenger about the route and football (I think there was a Champions league match or two)? He told us about the results during the flight. Arriving around midnight and leaving noon next day I wanted to have close to a bed. I chose Hilton Rome Airport it was about 10 min walk from T3. As HHonor gold I was upgraded to an executive room.
I woke up around 0900 and had some breakfast, checked out and headed back to the airport. The scandinavian way of going back to ARN wasn't that fancy as the night before but it I would fly a new airline.
An uneventful flight to CPH. The only thing that annoyed me was the the lady beside me didn't move to the free D seat beside her. She stayed in her E seat all the way to CPH even tough she was sighing lound about the cramped space. I think she was afraid of flying so I'll give her a break.
Legroom shot
Passing the alps.
Munich airport in the distance
I really enjoy flying over Europe because there's almost always an other aircraft outside the window
The only shot I got on OY-MRS here with my ride to ARN, LN-DYM
CPH-ARN
Date: 25 April 2012
Route: Copenhagen - Arlanda
Flight: Norwegian Air Shuttle DY4162
ETD: 15:30 (ATD 15:29)
ETA: 16:30 (ATA 16:33)
Seat: 31A
Aircraft: B737-800
Flight time: 1hrs 4mins
Registration: LN-DYM
9st flight on Norwegian
135th flight on a B737-800
This flight is nothing much to write about. A quick 1h flight on a LCC. They have a nice interior and I like the free WIFI (it very very slow)
Landing was on RWY 19L
19L means flying over ARN scrapyard.. The DC8 is still flying.
Bye bye for this time
Conclusion:
The ET flight was one of the best ones I've done in Europe and they have a really good product. It's sad that they are leaving the 5th freedom route to FCO but I'm glad that I finally got on board.
QI and DY are ok carriers as long as the price is right. The seats are very cramped.
If you are still with me i would like to thank you for reading this report!

Great report, nice to read about another one of those famous 5th freedom flights!
Quoting tobbry (Thread starter): But when they apologized for the broken safety video and I understood that they aren't that used to do the manual demo.
Yeah, but still, they should be able to give a correct manual safety demo in case the video breaks down?
Quoting tobbry (Thread starter): Starter with shrimps, salmon, a ceasarsalad and of course champagne
Quoting tobbry (Thread starter): I did choose the lamb for main course. It was tasty but salty, but it was really nice with an Ethiopian beer
Impressive meal for a 3 hour flight. I don't most Europe carriers server seperate courses in C on longer flights.

Nice touch?

Why didn't you suggest she moved to seat D? Perhaps as a non-frequent flyer - who was a bit nervous/afraid - as well - she didn't realise she was allowed to move?
Yes. He was very happy and int to football I think.

Hi Robert !
Very nice report with nice pictures ! Good that you got to try ET to FCO before they stop the ARN-FCO route.
Meal on ET looks great and I would love to try the beer.
Seat looks exactly the same as the Domestic First class seat on United Airlines which is very familiar to me
Looking forward to your next report!

Very surprised about the quality of the 757 in J. Looks pretty good, even for longhaul.

Great report!
How great you got to fly on Ethiopian Airlines between ARN-FCO. The cabin on the 757 looks very comfy, and I'm impressed by the high level of service you received on a short intra-European flight.

What an interesting report. Thanks for sharing that with us.
Ethiopian look rather good. What always surprised me with ET is that no two aircraft seem to have the same cabin layout or cabin design. Do you by any chance know if the seats on your aircraft were from its previous owner or is that the actual ET design?

I saw that it is possible to book the ET flight on SK flight number and thus combining it with a inbound flight on SK or any other carrier which allows to be booked with SK on half return basis, i.e. LH or BT...

Hey Tobias, great to have you back on the TR forum. A nice and enjoyable report from you this time, and I hope you'll keep posting us some more of them
Quoting tobbry (Thread starter): At the moment I have flown 33 out of 62, but the thing is, new airlines are coming and going so this is not an easy task.
Hehe, well that's quite an impossible task I'd say. Have you booked any flights on the small regionals yet?
Quoting tobbry (Thread starter): This ticket was around 100-110€ more expensive then a Y ticket.
Hmm still quite steep I'd say. A friend of mine who flew the same route in Y a few weeks ago told me that it was also possible to upgrade Y tickets to C using cash. Price was around $100. A shame that he found out after the flight, otherwise he'd have done it right away
Quoting tobbry (Thread starter): From CPH there's some choices to get to STO but I choose the cheapest and fastest way, Norwegian for 35€.
Now why DY? SAS are usually around €50 for the same route which is a lot better value since you get to use the lounge in CPH, etc.
Quoting tobbry (Thread starter): The lady in front of me had 5 overpacked bags that she wanted to check in.
Was she flying C or a *G member?
Quoting tobbry (Thread starter): The difference between these two are that in the Scandinavian Lounge they serve a light meal and hard liquor.
Food is the same in both lounges, but drinks are different indeed. But I'd say that the furniture in the Scandinavian Lounge is worlds ahead of the Business Lounge, really can't stand those worn out blue armchairs they have there.
Quoting tobbry (Thread starter): The welcome drink was either water, orangejuice or champagne.
How come you didn't opt for the Champagne as pre-departure drink also? = to get the most bang for your buck
Ah now that's a recognizable shot! Really shows also how far off the airport is from the city. They should really build that Maglev line since the S bahn simply takes too long!
"Wheels Up!"

I won't stop complaining until SAS reintroduces free service in Economy Class!

One of my rules are that it doesn't have to be a flight to or from ARN, as long as the airline flies to ARN it counts. For example. IB flies MAD-ARN, but if I'm on a IB flight between BCN-MAD it counts
The airlines I have caught so far is:
SK, LH, AF, JZ, EW: Swiss International Airlines (Switzerland)">LX, DY, NVR, TK, BT, TG, OS, BA, OK, AB, UA(CO), CA, PC, DC, TP, VV, KF, YV, DL, FI, BJ, OV, LO, WINDROSE AVIATION, DK, 4U, ET, EW, SU, U2

Thank you. I think the last flight is on the 16 of June. ET is a part of star alliance and also do codeshare with SAS.
Quoting LH4116 (Reply 12): Hey Tobias, great to have you back on the TR forum. A nice and enjoyable report from you this time, and I hope you'll keep posting us some more of them
Thank you Jonas. Many of my flights never becomes TR but I'll try to write one more in the near future
Quoting LH4116 (Reply 12): Hehe, well that's quite an impossible task I'd say. Have you booked any flights on the small regionals yet?
Not yet... But Nextjet and the ATP is a mission. At the same time it's hard to book a flight to VXO or AJR when you can go out in Europe for the same price
Quoting LH4116 (Reply 12): Hmm still quite steep I'd say. A friend of mine who flew the same route in Y a few weeks ago told me that it was also possible to upgrade Y tickets to C using cash. Price was around $100. A shame that he found out after the flight, otherwise he'd have done it right away
It was worth it

At the time of booking I could go with CIMBER to BMA but it was a 4h layover in CPH and I wanted to be home as fast and as cheap as possible. That's why I choose DY. The SK lounge wasn't worth the extra time and money..
Quoting LH4116 (Reply 12): Was she flying C or a *G member?
Neither! She just had a lot of bags.

That option wasn't on the tray...

Hejsan tobbry-san,
You certainly had a perfect timing for catching your first flight with Cimber - a few days later and it had folded!
Also great flying with the Ethiopian service while it was still operating via FCO and even in business class. Very nice looking seats there, even though that red color looks a bit... well, you know . I flew this flight some years ago in economy and the service was excellent, if quite haphazard as it was full of Swedish pax who after learning that hard booze was free tried their best to drink the plane dry! Curiously on that flight most of the pax were continuing to ADD, there were maybe five of us disembarking at FCO...
And yes, that late arrival at FCO is a bit annoying, good for you to stay so close to the terminal.

Hah, sounds like my obsessive mission of logging every single domestic flight route in Finland (+ as many of the regional international routes I have a chance as well...). But 62, really? I never realized Arlanda has that many airlines - it is much more than what HEL manages.
But yeah, good luck, especially with Syrian Air (and please do get out of Syria alive!)

Hey nice, we had this very same beer in an Eritrean restaurant in London back in January! A nice brew.

I counted 25 pax getting of at FCO. They also had a crew change there.

Yes, with the taxi fare the cheaper stays in Fumencino would have been almost as expensive as Hilton- Very convenient with a short walk... and a Hilton Gold card
