Hello everyone and welcome to my 7th trip report,
Knowing that the viewing terrace at FRA was open again I wanted to plan a little spotting trip. It was either the train or flying and being an aviation enthusiast I of course chose for flying. As I booked AMS-FRA-AMS with LH, leaving with the first flight in the morning and coming back with the last flight the next day it gave me 2 nice full days of spotting at FRA. But spending the night at FRA was a little too “boring” for me, I looked for some other options to fly too and spend the night at. I saw a good fare RT to LGW leaving FRA late in the afternoon and flying back to FRA the next morning. Perfect for me as it still gave me 2 good days of spotting in FRA. Upon looking for an hotel I chose for the Marriott hotel which is in walking distance from the South terminal at LGW from which I will be arriving and departing. AMS-FRA-AMS will be operated with an A321 this time. FRA-LGW with an A319 and LGW-FRA with the good old B737. The map for this trip thanks to www.gcmap.com:
An early flight means an early wake up call. My dad was once again kind enough to drop me off at AMS. Woke up at 05:15 and after a nice shower, a little breakfast and 20mins of driving I arrived at Schiphol airport at 06:00, 1 hour prior to my departure time. I had already checked in online the night before so all I had to do was print my BPs and drop my bag off. So off I went to check-in area 8. Printed my BPs, and dropped my bag off within 10 mins. Now it was off to security. Security wasn’t that busy so I was through in another 10 mins. I then proceeded straight to my gate: B17:
My aircraft for this leg: D-AIRW:
Boarding started at 06:35 and I was of course one of the last to board:
Upon entering the plane I was kindly greeted by 2 female FAs and proceeded to my seat: 23A. Flight was around 80% full with the 2 seats next to me occupied. The view from my seat, quite a rainy morning at AMS today:
A kind welcome from the cockpit and with an announced flying time of 45mins we pushed back 5 mins late at 07:05:
It was a short taxi to runway 24, also known as the “Kaagbaan”:
Once at the runway it was our turn right away. Lining up:
Starting take-off roll:
And up we go!:
Left turn:
Between 2 cloud layers:
Leg room shot:
Seatback:
Flight crew consisted of 1 female purser and 2 female FAs. Once the seatbelt sign got switched off they sprung into action. Snack on this sector was a “cheese bread” and together with that I got an OJ and coffee:
Soon enough we started our descent:
And into final approach to runway 25R:
And touchdown into rainy FRA!:
Taxiing to our gate, luckily A11:
Parked at our gate:
I bid the crew farewell and deplaned. I entered T1, with the viewing terrace being in T2 that meant taking the Sky Line:
Spent a couple of hours spotting inside at the food plaza as the viewing terrace wasn’t open until 10 o’clock and it was still raining outside. Once the weather started to clear up a bit I proceeded towards the viewing terrace. Paid the 5 euro entrance fee and went through the security checkpoint. Here are some pictures of my nice spotting session:

It was now time to get a bite to eat and head back over to T1 and my gate. Had a menu at the McD and took the Sky Line back to T1. Once arriving at T1 I went straight to security for the B gates. Was through security within 10 mins and walked over to passport control. That took about 5 mins and I was now at the Int’l B gates. The FIDS, note SQ325 to SIN delayed until the next morning!:
Before arriving at my gate: B23 I got this nice view of my aircraft. D-AILT will be doing the honors for me on this leg:
Boarding started at 16:40 and I was one of the last to board. Upon entering the aircraft no greetings from the 2 FAs as they were busy talking to each other. I proceeded to my seat: 14A. A pretty light load on this sector at around 40% with the seat next to me empty and the aisle seat occupied. The view from my seat:
A welcome from the cockpit and with an announced flying time of 1h5mins we pushed back right on time:
Taxiing to the active:

It was my turn right away, so I was through within 5 mins and headed towards the baggage claim:
I got my bag, which was one of the first on the belt, passed through customs and proceeded towards the arrivals area. I then followed the signs to my hotel which meant taking this walkway:
Outside upstairs South Terminal:
It was a 10 minute walk to my hotel, following these signs:
I’m glad they showed this every time I crossed the street as I had to get used to it:
My hotel:
I checked in at the reception desk and got the key to my room no. 313 which was on the 3rd floor:
I watched a movie in my room before going downstairs and having dinner at the restaurant. After having a nice meal I went back upstairs to my room where I watched another movie and fell asleep. 7.5 hours later my alarm went off and I took a nice and long shower. Checked out at the reception desk and after 10 mins of walking I arrived at the South Terminal, this time downstairs:
Got the elevator to go up one level and proceeded through this walkway before arriving at the check-in area:
Having done check-in online the night before at my hotel I proceeded to the desk to get my BPs printed and drop my bag off. After 15 mins I headed upstairs to go through security. Security wasn’t that busy and I was through in 10 mins. Took a short walk and have now arrived at the “waiting area”:
Exchanged 20EUR to get some GBP to have some breakfast at the McD:
The remaining time I listened to some music checking the FIDS occasionally to see if my gate had appeared on it yet. At 08:50 my gate appeared on the screen, so I proceeded to gate 10 which was one of the first ones on the left:
My aircraft for this leg, D-ABIO:
Soon enough boarding started at 09:20, 20 minutes before departure time. I was one of the last to board. Our neighbor:
Once entering the plane I was kindly greeted by 2 female FAs. I headed to my seat: 16F. A much fuller flight compared to the FRA-LGW leg yesterday at 80% full. The seat next to me was empty with the aisle seat occupied:
A greeting from the cockpit with an announced flying time of 1h. We pushed back 5 min early at 09:35:
UX 737 parked at the gate:
Different LCCs in 1 picture. 2 DY 737s at the gate while another one arrived during our taxi:
It was a short taxi to runway 26L. This TS A330 departed in front of us towards Canada:
Followed by this U2 A319:
And this FR 737:
It was then our turn. Lining up on 26L:
We started take-off roll immediately:
And liftoff!:

We soon enough crossed the coastline:

Soon enough we crossed the coastline on the other side of the North Sea:
A little airport:
The flight crew consisted of 1 female purser and 2 female FAs. This was the snack they came around with: A chocolate “chinoise”, together with that I got an OJ and coffee:
Soon enough we started our descent:
Once in final approach to runway 25C we passed this “Commerzbank Arena” home of football club Eintracht Frankfurt:
Almost there:
Touchdown!:
Taxiing to our remote stand V102:
4 heavies sitting at their remote stand waiting to be pushed back to the terminal for yet another long haul flight:
In our parking position:
Bid the crew farewell and deplaned via the back stairs this time:
Once everybody was on the bus we drove over to terminal 1 with, like always, some amazing views:
Under the wing of the A380, wow!:
I was first one off the bus and walked straight upstairs to passport control. Was through within 10 mins and headed straight back over to the Sky Line which will take me to T2. Paid the money to get into the viewing terrace and had another nice spotting session. Here are some pictures:

As the weather was getting worse, with storms surrounding FRA I decided to go airside and continue with my spotting session. So took the Sky Line back to T1 and went straight through security which took about 15 mins. Got a bottle of Sprite and walked all the way to the end of the A gates where you get a very nice view of all the action with planes taking off from 25C, taxiing close in front of you and all the aircraft that landed on 25R also taxiing by. Once arriving this KE A380 had just landed:

AT // 737 // CN-RGI:
LH // 747 // D-ABVX:
XQ // 737 // TC-SUZ, the highlight of this spotting trip, finally caught it, nice livery!:
It was now time to head over to my gate B2, which is quite a walk from where I was. Gate B2 was another part of FRA where I haven’t been too. Once arriving at the B gates you take an escalator upstairs and there you have a whole bunch of B gates close to each other. Boarding commenced almost exactly at the time I arrived:
I was one of the last to board. Walked down a whole flight of stairs and took a seat in the bus that will bring us to the aircraft. Once arriving at the aircraft I got this nice under the wing view:
Once entering the aircraft I was greeted by a female FA and took my seat which was in the last row. The view from my seat:
Not going to bore you too much with this flight, it was the usual LH flight. Had the seat next to me empty with the aisle occupied. Load was 80%. Flight crew consisted of 1 male purser, 1 male and 2 female FAs. Snack was the same as on the FRA-LGW sector. We took off from 25C and landed on the Polderbaan which meant a long taxi. Arrival gate was B15 and we parked next to this VY A320:
I quickly retrieved my bag and took the train back home.
Once again the usual nice flights with Lufthansa. Had a nice time spotting at the viewing terrace in FRA. Marriott hotel was a nice place to stay at LGW. All in all a nice weekend away!
This will conclude the TR. I hope you guys enjoyed it as I sure enjoyed writing it. Comments/suggestions/questions are very welcome and much appreciated.

Hey, Brendan,
good work again.
That´s for sure the perfect idea to spend two days at the FRA terrace, nice pictures btw. and split it up with a night at LGW. Don´t tell it to the non aviation interested!.

Hi Markus,
thank you very much!

Hi Gabriel,
Thanks glad you enjoyed it

Nice TR! FRA is by far my favorite airport to spot at. In fact, I try ensure I have a couple of extra hours to connect through FRA so I can enjoy the show.

Nice report and nice to see photos from my local. LGW's had a ton of work done to it in the past couple of years and it's looking massively better than it did in the BAA days. I fly out of LGW almost daily but never go into the terminal.
Just wondering what you thought of it as someone who isn't based in the UK?

Hi Brendan,
great report of a great trip, nice itinerary for a short getaway
Despite being at FRA a few times I never get tired of watching pictures of all the different planes at this great airport. And I love the terrace, great place to spend a few hours.

Hi KrisYYZ,
Thanks a lot! Yes, FRA is also pretty high on my list of favorite spotting airports so far. I actually try to do the same thing as you do when connecting through FRA

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. The short time I was there it gave me a pretty good impression actually. I liked it, although I'm not a very big fan of those "holding areas" I prefer waiting at my gate and getting some nice views but oh well.

Hi Brendan,
nice report with great spotting pictures from FRA. It's always worth it to spend a few hours there. Btw - I also flew on D-ABIO (STR-FRA) and D-AILT (CGN-MUC).

It's too bad that there's only the T2 terrace left. The observation decks on T1 were awesome.

Hoi Brendan, nice report!
Seems like you had some good two days of spotting in Frankfurt. Having just been to MUC, I must say that I still prefer FRA over it mainly due to the more interesting traffic, and of course the fact that the spotting terrace isn't shielded in glass.
Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter): It was either the train or flying and being an aviation enthusiast I of course chose for flying.
Hehe, well I guess with DB and their outrageous fares you'd better fly anyway since it's cheaper
Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter): An early flight means an early wake up call. My dad was once again kind enough to drop me off at AMS. Woke up at 05:15 and after a nice shower, a little breakfast and 20mins of driving I arrived at Schiphol airport at 06:00, 1 hour prior to my departure time.
Ah how convenient! I wish I could've lived that close to the airport. Nice of your dad to drive you, but I guess there are busses to Schipol also?
Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter): Paid the 5 euro entrance fee and went through the security checkpoint.
Hmm €5 is a bit steep I'd say, at least considering the fact that MUC only charge €1, but then again it might be worth the money if you plan on spending a few hours there. Good to know that the weather didn't stop you
Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter): I checked in at the reception desk and got the key to my room no. 313 which was on the 3rd floor:
Room looks really nice, how much did you pay for the night? Also were the movies free, or did they charge for them as well?

I won't stop complaining until SAS reintroduces free service in Economy Class!

Hi Jonas,
Thank you! Indeed, FRAs spotting terrace is better in my opinion too, also due to the traffic
Quoting LH4116 (Reply 19): I wish I could've lived that close to the airport. Nice of your dad to drive you, but I guess there are busses to Schipol also?
Yes, there is also a bus service and a 5 min train ride from a station just 10 min walk from my house, so nice and close
Quoting LH4116 (Reply 19): Room looks really nice, how much did you pay for the night? Also were the movies free, or did they charge for them as well?
Paid 58GBP for the room and another 10GBP for the whole movie "package"
