RTW Pt 2: I‘ll get to Peru somehow! QK/UA YYZ-IAH-LIM

Introduction

Hello again TR readers! For those of you who missed my 1st part, it can be found at the bottom of the report. This report follows the last one, which focused on FI from Keflavik (KEF) to Toronto (YYZ). It covers Air Canada Jazz 8109 from YYZ to IAH and United Airlines 854 from Houston to Lima, Peru.

Background

After years of planning, me and my dad finally decided to go around the world on ID/Standby tickets.
We decided to go to Machu Picchu, Peru in South American and then some Asian Cities.
This was the proposed flight schedule (B means booked):

Icelandair 631 KEFJFK 30/3/2012 Boeing 757-300
United 1116 EWRIAH 31/3/2012 Boeing 737-500
United 854 IAHLIM 31/3/2012 Boeing 767-300ER
TACA Peru 7 LIMCUZ 1/4/2012 Airbus 320-200 (B)
TACA Peru 101 CUZLIM 2/4/2012 Airbus 319-100 (B)
United 855 LIMIAHSFO 2/4/2012 +1 Boeing 767-300ER
United 837 SFONRT 4/4/2012 +1 Boeing 747-400
Cathay Pacific 503 HNDHKG 8/4/2012 Boeing 747-400
Cathay Pacific 701 HKGSIN 10/4/2012 Airbus 330-300
Thai 873 SINBKK 12/4/2012 Boeing 777-300
Cathay Pacific 771 BKKDEL 14/4/2012 Airbus 330-300
Air India 102 DELBOM 16/4/2012 Boeing 777-300ER (B)
Oman Air 691 BOM – MCT 19/4/2012 Boeing 737-800
Oman Air 102 MCT – DXB 19/4/2012 Boeing 737-800
Emirates 3 DXBLHR 21/4/2012 Airbus 380-800
Icelandair 455 LHRKEF 21/4/2012 Boeing 757-200

But as many of you know, you never know on ID tickets and the actual route has been way different then the planned one so far. Luckily I always made plan B and even C. But that will come in later reports.

I was really looking forward and this was shaping up to be a trip of a lifetime!

The report

As you may remember, the last report ended in YYZ Terminal 3 looking for a way to Lima, Peru. I will keep on from there.

We walked to the AA gate which had a flight to LGA later that evening. As we had standby tickets from EWR to LIM on UA it would be good to get to New York. But the checkin desk was deserted, more than an hour before the flight. Why?!

Next stop was the DL counter. We had EWR-ATL-LIM tickets on them, so maybe we could switch the EWR-ATL tickets for YYZ-ATL tickets the following day. But no, all flights to Atlanta the following day were full.

We then ran to the train to Terminal 1. Aircraft while waiting for it to arrive:

We walked straight to the Air Canada ticket counter, looking to exchange the YYZ-YVR tickets we had as a plan D on LIM-NRT for YYZ-IAH. But no, that wasn‘t possible because IAH is in the US. ?

Our last chance was United. Their last flight of the day had already departed but luckily there was an UA agent still at their checkin desk. It was a nice woman and yes, she could exchange our EWR-IAH ticket for an YYZ-IAH ticket the next morning! Things were looking good again.

They could include the price there too…

We walked to the Sheraton located inside the airport complex, but they were full. They could instead book us at another Sheraton airport hotel 10 minutes away and we decide to do that.

We woke up at 5 am the following morning, got ready and took the shuttle back to the airport.

We arrived at the airport 5:45 and after nearly half an hour waiting in line, we got to the checkin desk. There we got some real bad news: The 6 am flight had been cancelled because of an engine failure! Therefore the next flight (our flight) was suddenly overbooked. The agent asked if we still wanted to get a ticket, go through security and try to get on. There was also a AC desk inside and we could try to get on their 8:10 flight to Houston. After thinking about it we decided to try it.

After coming through security we walked straight to the AC desk as that was a much better choice than UA. We asked again if we could exchange our YYZ-YVR tickets for a YYZ-IAH one. She said yes!  But what was the agent the night before talking about?! Anyway, our luck kept on as there were only 2 seats left and they were together! We of course said yes and got tickets for AC8109 to IAH opb Air Canada Jazz/Express, seats 26D and 26F. Great!

We went to a UA service desk straight as we came to Concourse C and got tickets for UA 854 which would depart some 5 hours later. Our seats would be confirmed at boarding. Then we went to Lefty‘s Lonestar Grille and got some burgers while we spotted regs on planes taxiing by.

I quite like the Colgan Air livery. If you look closely you can see that it still is written Continental Connection on the S340 next to it, one of only 3 CO marked planes I saw that day, sad!

After eating our burgers at Lefty‘s, we went to the UA Gold lounge. There we had a view on the runway so we could spot many, many regs!

Globe vs. Tulip – which do you like better? For me it‘s actually even, I like the tulip but I like the globe too!

To my disappointment we were given an aisle and a middle seat, 10D and E. It cheered me up a litte when I found out it was a EconomyPlus bulkhead seat, with more legroom and recline. In the flight I didn‘t get any better service than in Economy. Is the seating comfort the only advantage in EconomyPlus?

The seat was ok, but it could use a better headrest and was kinda hard

We took a taxi to Westin Inn Lima and got asleep at midnight, only to wake up at 4am the following morning for another flight. Westin was great, some pictures of it below. Unfortunately I only got 4 hours there. But that‘s another story.

4 pics of Westin – really classy, and incredibly differnt from the dirty environment outside.

I set a personal record and logged 107 registrations that day – 18 in YYZ, 88 in IAH and 1 in LIM.

Afterthoughts

Air Canada Jazz impressed me on their flight. They are the only regional I know of which has IFE, and even the mainlines don‘t have IFEs on these types of legs (beside B6, VX and AC). The UA lounge was nice, and it was fine to have an upgrade. But I really didn‘t feel the premium of their W product. The seat wasn´t really comfortable and the food wasn‘t good at all. Service was good though.

Kind regards,
Sveinn

Hi Sveinn,

great report!! I flew the route twice, but always on the defunct CO. The 764 they used looked much more modern and new and those old UA ones.

Woow, nice you pulled a stay at the Westin! Really nice hotel on the tallest building of Lima. Its restraurants are super popular now in Lima, I still did not had a chance to go and try myself. Did you had the chance?

Hope to see more reports from you!!

Another good installment, thanks for posting! I sounds like you had a lot of fun running around YYZ trying to get a flight!

Over Cleveland, 2.5 hours left – long for a RJ, but better than the Q400 that UAX uses!

Wow, that IS a long flight on an RJ, which is why I guess they need IFE. The system seems pretty good.

Hi Sveinn,

nice second part of your series! Good to hear you were finally successful with finding appropriate flights.

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
Our Jazz plane, which is both a new airline and a new type, the rare CRJ-705. I only had the 700 in my log.

That's a rare "type" indeed!

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
Nice surprise – IFE on a RJ! Nice touch QK/AC!

That makes the CRJ705 even more special!

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
Globe vs. Tulip – which do you like better? For me it‘s actually even, I like the tulip but I like the globe too!

I started to like the tulip - the globe and the CO livery are outdated IMO.

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
Fleetpage – I can’t find wrongs as easily as PH, and quickly gave up trying on this one

You gave up too early!   As far as I know, United's 744s are equipped with PW4056s and the PWs on the 757s are PW2037s.

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
The dinner was definitely not premium in any way. The meatballs were okay, the pasta was hard and the bread was somewhat artificial. Not good!

Not impressive at all! But one shouldn't expect too much on American carriers in these days.

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
Haribo candy bought in KEF

Nice!

I don't like flying on those small, noisy Air Canada / JAZZ aircraft. One hour from NYC to YUL or Toronto is enough. 3 hours is for me much too long.

On top of that the air fares to Canada from New York are outrageous. Most times the AC aircraft are empty.

As to UNITED's crappy food I am not surprised. I don't see the desert? More than likely a lousy cookie. That's why I try to avoid US carriers on international routes.

Very interesting trip - I have to ask though, why did you pick EK from DXB to LHR and not BA?

I flew the route twice, but always on the defunct CO.

Nice! I would have loved to try Continental out.

Quoting Checo77 (Reply 2):
The 764 they used looked much more modern and new and those old UA ones.

I believe so, this wasn't good at all. Would have preferred the -400 over the -300 as a new type!

Quoting Checo77 (Reply 2):
Woow, nice you pulled a stay at the Westin! Really nice hotel on the tallest building of Lima.

It was great! Didn't know it was the tallest.

Unfortunately not, I only had a Coke there as it was so late. Would've loved to!

It was fun in it's own way, but when waiting at the UA counter I was a bit tired...
Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 4):
Wow, that IS a long flight on an RJ, which is why I guess they need IFE.

Yep! It did fell more like a Airbus/Boeing though, very comfortable for a CRJ. Much more comfortable than the MQ one I flew from ORD to OKC last year.

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 4):
The system seems pretty good.

The same as on the 77Ws and 763s it seemed. Way too good for a RJ! But that's just good for me.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 5):

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 5):
Good to hear you were finally successful with finding appropriate flights.

Yep, it worked out in the end.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 5):
That's a rare "type" indeed!

Indeed! Was surprised and glad when I asked the FA. Me: "Is it a CRJ-700 or -900?" F/A: "Neither, it's a -705."
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 5):
That makes the CRJ705 even more special!

Absolutely!

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 5):
I started to like the tulip - the globe and the CO livery are outdated IMO.

Yeah, the tulip is nice. The aircraft are fine for me but the new UA logo at checkin and such is really classy IMO.

Well, I liked it. But flying it often would maybe be bad.

Quoting lychemsa (Reply 6):
On top of that the air fares to Canada from New York are outrageous.

True! As we couldn't get on the NYC flights on AC as standbys the night before we asked about the regular fare. "$1550" was the answer! I know it was last minute, but come on! I could fly US-Europe in J for that!

Quoting lychemsa (Reply 6):

Brownie in the corner. It was ok tasty, but nothing special.

Quoting lychemsa (Reply 6):

Hi Sveinn !

Very nice second part of your RTW adventure!

I have to say I'm VERY surprised you were able to exchange your ID 90 tickets to a different route by another carrier; NEVER heard of that and would expect most people to just laugh at you. Tickets issued by your own carrier needs to be reissued ONLY be your own carrier. Other carriers could possibly accept your coupons for another route than mentioned but that's totally up to them. I guess if the new route cost less than what's on the coupon, it's not so bad for the carrier but they are under NO obligation to do so. It seem you were VERY lucky.

Yes, the legroom is the ONLY difference between Economy Plus and regular Economy. UA does not call premium economy either.

Too bad you didn't get a window but as you know, flying standby you have to be happy to get a seat at all.

QK looks very good and similar to my E90 experience last July YVR-LAX.

I think the ETOPS pmUA 757s have PW4040s on them but not 100% sure. PW4056 on the 744s is of course correct.

Looking forward to part 2; hope to go there in Feb13.....

Same as above; although, the AC agent handling us at YYZ was TERRIFIC! Went out of her way for us and spent nearly half an hour trying to get us there. She was even starting to look at routes via YUL when she saw that there were 2 noshows in row 26.

I know, totally good to at least get on. Also, I'd rather lose a window here and get one on flights on new types because I've flown the 763 before. Also I got the same approach into LIM just in daylight the day after on TACA.

Sounds like you had an eventful day of traveling - looks like fun, yet a bit stressful when it seems you don't have any idea if you're going to make it or not!

UA's Economy Class catering is abysmal. I like flying with them, but seriously - on a 6 hour 30 minute flight, that's the dinner provided in Y?! Man - flying is not what it used to be; even for an passionate airline fanatic like myself ...

The airport or city? For the airport, it was surprisingly smooth, and deserves a big thumbs up for it! Security, customs, everything efficient. Only thing is lack of service landside. There is absolutely NOTHING other than check-in desks there. Spent 2 hours there, nothing to do. As for the city, some parts of it looked nice but most looked poor and dirty unfortunately. But this city is HUGE! After takeoff the morning after, there were houses everywhere! Couldn't see an end to the city.

I was actually refering to the airport   but yeah, there's a lot to be done in the city! I find interesting that you say it looked kind of poor, because I cannot imagine what you must think of the really really impoverished areas in Lima (or in the country itself). Anyways, I'm glad you liked the airport! Lima Airport Partners has worked very hard through out the years and they have done an excellent job

Some areas in the outskirts of Cuzco weren't even good enough for animals! Yet people lived there. Some houses were just a wall with a hole in it for a door and nothing behind the wall except grass...can hardly call them houses.

Hi Sveinn,

nice continuation, thanks! Toronto - Houston looks like a very long flight for an RJ, did you feel cramped at all? Was there any meal / snack service on board?

A pity you didn't get a window on the Lima leg, especially if the person who does have the window doesn't appreciate it at all! Still, you got on board, which is the main thing.

Did you book hotels in advance? Or just turn up and see what had rooms? As plans can change drastically when on non-rev tickets!
