RTW Pt 4: Canada again?! AC LIM-YYZ
Introduction
Welcome dear TR readers to this 4th part of my around-the-world trip. If you missed the earlier ones you can find them at the bottom of the page. This report features my trip from Lima up to North America again. It was originally supposed to be UA’s service 855 to San Francisco via Houston, but things change fast when you’re flying standby...
Background
After years of planning, me and my dad finally decided to go around the world on ID/Standby tickets.
We decided to go to Machu Picchu, Peru in South American and then some Asian Cities.
This was the proposed flight schedule (B means booked):

But as many of you know, you never know on ID tickets and the actual route has been way different then the planned one so far. Luckily I always made plan B and even C. But that will come in later reports.
I was really looking forward and this was shaping up to be a trip of a lifetime!
The report
After having dinner at Hotel Costa de Sol Ramada Lima Airport, we walked back into the check in hall to fly back to North America. Our first choice was UA to SFO via Houston, and we were pretty confident we would get on. But again, you never know on standbys…

We got to the United counter and asked about the status. We got the response straight in our face: The flight was overbooked and there were 70 standbys listed! Ok, time to use plan B and C! We walked to the AC counter, still calm. Their flight was delayed til 23:45, so we would get enough time. After waiting in line for a short while, we got to the counter. That flight was oversold too! Now we were starting to get worried, because we didn‘t by any means want to spend the night in Lima. We got to the AA counter and asked. 1 seat open and 5 standbys! Oh s**t, we were in a bad position. The AA agent told us to wait and see if we could get a seat. At 22:00, an hour later, we get a surprising call. The AC agent is calling for us. We walk to the counter and, thank god, there are 2 seats open on the flight! 16A for me and the 2nd last row, 38A for my dad! Great! Flying with Air Canada (not Jazz) has actually for long been a dream of mine – I just love their beautiful planes! Represent Canada so well, the combination of the maple leaf and cold light blue...
We got through security and passport control in under 10 minutes (again, great work LIM!) and went straight to our gate.
As I said in another report, views aren‘t great from the boarding area in LIM. I spotted our aircrafts reg in YYZ, C-GEOU.

Just getting started
This seat was probably the most comfortable Y seat I‘ve ever been in. Enough legroom, great headrest, well padded, just perfect! Had no trouble at all sleeping! Long way from the worn, hard UA seat. I slept for 6 hours before waking up over Florida. Had a nice time talking to the Christian missionary who sat aside me. He had flown Yellowknife-Vancouver-San Francisco-Houston-Lima-Iquitos on the way to Peru where he headed into the Amazon forest. Now he had already flown Iquitos-Lima on LAN and had to connect to a flight to YVR before finally getting home again. Quite the trip! Most would hate flying like this, but I was actually kinda jealous.
I told him about my plane hobby, and the trip me and my father were taking. He liked the idea and wished me good luck. Nice to have a good seatmate when the flight is so long!

Legroom was very generous, but as I am 189 cm/6 ft 2 in (and still growing), it rarely happens that I can stretch my legs in Y like on this flight!

When going through customs the custom officer looked very surprised. He: “WTH?! You got into here from Iceland March 30th, went out again the following day to Peru and are back again?!” We explained our situation and he asked what we were going to do in Canada. “Uhm, we don’t know actually” we answered. “Go to Niagara Falls!” he kinda commanded, than grinned but said that we should seriously consider it. We did so for 5 minutes, then went to Hertz, rented a car and suddenly we were on our way to see one of the world’s most famous falls!

Finally! McDonalds (for those of you who missed my first reports, I have it as a destiny every trip outside of Iceland to get a McD. Since they got away from us Icelanders in 2009 this has been my rule. Not that I like their burgers so much, it just has grown as a habit to do this. )

AC was great, rescued us from Peru, got us safely and very comfortably to North America.
Their seats, service and catering were absolutely fantastic!

Lunch / dinner / snack catering to Europe is mediocre. Breakfast flights in general are good; even on American to Europe. The only decent meals they serve.
However when AC lost my suitcase and "never found it again" it was a nightmare dealing with them.

I didn't get lunch or dinner on this flight, so can't judge that. My food aboard AC 1 to NRT was fine though.

While sometimes, I get advanced warning if another A-netter is on one of my flights, there is not much I can do for you, other than give you a tour of the cockpit after landing, but then ... just about any pilot would do that for an enthusiast!
Generally, AC treats its non-revs well, although at some contracted out-stations sometimes the treatment is lacking. I am very glad to hear you were treated well, to the point of looking for you when two seats became available! And, what a great opportunity for you to travel the world, and how wonderful your father joins you.

This is funny, as how many years ago was this? ... and still, with just about every comment or trip report about Air Canada, lychemsa adds this comment. Personally, I have had baggage lost by many many airlines, some never retrieved and Customer handling was anywhere from great to abysmal. Sometimes, one just as to get over it.

Personally, I think that AC treats its non-revs VERY well. On the way back after a cruise, me and my wife missed our connect in YYZ. The counter agent asked me to be patient and just relax while she took care of the regular pax. After about 25 minutes she called me back up and gave us both a hotel room including vouchers for food.

Going out one airlines and coming back with another, it was so much fun.
If you really plan it well and check bookings directly (or indirectly via central resv. system), you have rough ideas how flights will turn out to be like.
The hard part maybe weight limitations as you don't know how much cargo and fuel on each day.
But working weight/balance myself, I tend to believe if it's a 767,330 or even 340-300 flying more than 5-6 hours,
then MAX TOW, MAX LAW due to fuel being carried extra due weather bla bla....maybe cases and that's another story!
So try to non-rev on a 747, 380, 777, 346! lol
You guys were destined to fly Air Canada! Their long haul products are way better than UA imo.

I like the facts how, though not all, Scandinavians, Icelanders love Starbucks, McD, Burger King etc.

Normally with an overnight flight, one light meal is served and one hot meal.
This departure was after midnight, so in Economy a light meal was offered immediately after take-off, usually a hot snack, (wraps or pizza pockets), then a full hot breakfast is offered before landing. In Executive First two meals are offered, and as the F/A's offered us J meals after take-off, I am guess there were no passenger "takers".
The flight was about 90 minutes late, I think most of the passengers were pretty tired.

Each and every time I have flown with Air Canada, the meals were absolutely delicious!!! I've always been happy with them and they are better at handling winter operations in Toronto. An example would be Atlanta-Los Angeles via Toronto instead of nonstop, via Detroit, via New York.
To this day, McDonald's has THE BEST FRENCH FRIES, EVER!!! YUM-O!!!!!

Oh, would've liked it! Isn't the 767 cockpit very alike the 757 one? My uncle flies the 757 for FI. In 2005 FI chartered TF-FIB, a 767, to Santa Barbara (Venezuela). He got a call, flew to MAD as a pax and then flew in the left front seat over to CCS. It was his first 767 flight! Shows the similarity of these two...

Exactly. I once lost my bag with BA. Arrived in FRA, it wasn't there. 3 days later I fly back home direct on FI and the bag gets to FRA after I depart for Iceland again. It is policy at AC, that after the doors close, the non-revs hold the same "rights" as full revenue passengers. So if the aircraft diverts or is delayed, then the non-rev passengers are treated the same way. The only restriction is what you saw ... full revenue passengers will the dealt with first, then non-revs.
I have always liked this non-rev policy at AC, and I am not sure if it is the same at other airlines.

I see. The delay was already on the screens in LIM when I arrived on my TACA flight earlier in the day, just didn't know I would be flying it then.

That's understandable in this case, as the flight was full but there was (thank god) some no shows.

Our flight to YYZ had to divert to YWG due to security issues in YVR(all pax had to re-clear security on the flight we were on.) The one thing that shocked me was the hotel room given. The airline I work for would rarely if ever do that for the non-revs flying

AC looks to be very good, though I've never flown them, nor had cause to. A friend flew London - St Louis via Toronto on them and wsa impressed.
Nice idea of the customs guy to recomment Niagra, I'm sure you had a good time there! And north America is the home of McDo, despite how bad the quality is, you really have to have one when visiting!

I still can't believe that you try to non-rev in the week of Easter and Spring break in the US. Probably one of the worst weeks of the year to travel standby.

I believe you about the seat comfort! 16A must be one of the rows with the greatest legroom measuring 33 inches, while others may only have 31 inch pitch.

I love the AC flight crews.
A few years back I flew LHR-YYZ on a B763, and asked if I could go and see the flight deck after we had landed in YYZ and everyone had disembarked. The F/A asked the captain and I was invited forward.
The captain was a great guy, I can even remember his name, he started talking to me like any other passenger until I asked two questions "which NAT did we use today, when I checked they were all very northerly today?" and then "do the AC guys fly the SIMCO2 arrival or just file direct YYZ VOR, like BA do?". He subsequently looked at his F/O quite shocked and then really indulged me in some geeky ops chat - far above and beyond what I would have expected having just flown across the pond and probably wanted to get home!
It's guys like him that make my pursuit in aviation worth it - in the hope that one day I can do something very similar!
Anyway, I digress, a brilliant trip report, and how lucky you are to be going on a trip like this!
