RTW Pt 6: The 77Ws older sister! CX NRT-HKG

Introduction

Welcome dear readers to the sixth part of my around the world journey. This report will cover my flight on Cathay Pacific from Narita Airport in Tokyo to Hong Kong, HK. The last report covered my 777-300ER flight from NRT. This one covers her older sister, the non-ER version of the 777-300. If you missed some of the first five parts, those can be found at the down of the page.

Background

After years of planning, me and my dad finally decided to go around the world on ID/Standby tickets.
We decided to go to Machu Picchu, Peru in South American and then some Asian Cities.
This was the proposed flight schedule (B means booked):

Icelandair 631 KEFJFK 30/3/2012 Boeing 757-300
United 1116 EWRIAH 31/3/2012 Boeing 737-500
United 854 IAHLIM 31/3/2012 Boeing 767-300ER
TACA Peru 7 LIMCUZ 1/4/2012 Airbus 320-200 (B)
TACA Peru 101 CUZLIM 2/4/2012 Airbus 319-100 (B)
United 855 LIMIAHSFO 2/4/2012 +1 Boeing 767-300ER
United 837 SFONRT 4/4/2012 +1 Boeing 747-400
Cathay Pacific 503 HNDHKG 8/4/2012 Boeing 747-400
Cathay Pacific 701 HKGSIN 10/4/2012 Airbus 330-300
Thai 873 SINBKK 12/4/2012 Boeing 777-300
Cathay Pacific 771 BKKDEL 14/4/2012 Airbus 330-300
Air India 102 DELBOM 16/4/2012 Boeing 777-300ER (B)
Oman Air 691 BOM – MCT 19/4/2012 Boeing 737-800
Oman Air 102 MCT – DXB 19/4/2012 Boeing 737-800
Emirates 3 DXBLHR 21/4/2012 Airbus 380-800
Icelandair 455 LHRKEF 21/4/2012 Boeing 757-200

But as many of you know, you never know on ID tickets and the actual route has been way different then the planned one so far. Luckily I always made plan B and even C. But that will come in later reports.

I was really looking forward and this was shaping up to be a trip of a lifetime!

The report

Tokyo is a HUGE city, and I took bazillion pictures there. But as I don’t want to drown you in pictures, there won’t be “that” many posted here.

Now, let’s get to the day of the flight. I woke up at 6 am, took a shower and took the hotel shuttle to the airport. We arrived there at 7:30, more than 2 hours before my flight. After waiting in line for 15 minutes we finally got to the checkin desk. There we were instructed that the flight was full but we should come back to the desk at 8:45. This surprised us but we decided to just take it easy, go have breakfast and see what happens. Some pictures taken from the restaurant:

The new JL scheme is horrible on everythig but the 787. Unlike the AY scheme which has started to grow on me, this one hasn’t. It’s just horrible.

We got back to the check in desk and yes, the LF was in the low 70s so we could easily get seats. What was it with the full flight? Anyway, we then proceeded through security + immigration and soon we were through.

Wait, I don‘t understand this?

After taking the train from T1 to the arrival hall and going through immigration, we went to Burger King and had burgers. When that was done, we bought train tickets to Kowloon and sat down inside the train. 30 minutes later we were on our way to Hotel Nikko Hong Kong inside this bus:

Below I will continue about my stay in HK, but here I will stop the flight report.  Afterthoughts

CX was okay, but nothing spectacular. The food wasn‘t special, and that damn IFE box was in the wrong place! Otherwise the flight was fine, service was superior and the FAs great. I would certainly fly CX again if having the chance though, and I guess their longhaul aircraft are not as outdated as their regional 773s.

Hi Sveinn,

very nice 6th part of your series! You took many good pictures in Tokyo and Hong Kong! The latter is one of my favorite cities. It's always a pleasure to be there, the skyline is the world's most beautiful IMO.

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
The new JL scheme is horrible on everythig but the 787. Unlike the AY scheme which has started to grow on me, this one hasn’t. It’s just horrible.

Yes, it is horrible, even on the 787.

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
PR 70 years serving Asia livery on this 77W, RPC-7776

PR's livery is not much better - at least they have a nice tail.

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
The tail of our 773, B-HNH. Later I found out this is actually the first 777-300 delivered – ever!

Congratulations!

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
Legroom is OK, but the IFE box is located badly

At least it's a rather small one.

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
PH style

Great choice. Good to see Schweppes on CX.

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
The OW logojets are okay, but I have to say that ST have the best logojets by far. *A is way behind.

I agree, the Skyteam livery is awesome. But I like the Star Alliance livery better than the Oneworld one.

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
I wouldn‘t hesitate if I had the choice!

I wouldn't either!

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
The tastiest juice I‘ve ever tasted! Wasn‘t as good in TYO, SIN and BKK – use different oranges there I guess

Florida orange juice is my favorite!

Yes, Hong Kong is great. Just wish Kai Tak was still there!

It's very nice! Many, many skyscrapers there!

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 2):

Hehe, true. There are at least some colours on the tail.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 2):

Depends on the carrier for me. I like the way OW carriers keep the logo on the tail, wish *A carriers did that too. AA, CX and BA have nice liveries because the engines are in a different color than the fuselage or the fuselage isn't white. I don't like IB/AY etc. OW liveries because they just have white engines + white fuselage (=dull)

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 2):
Florida orange juice is my favorite!

It was my fav too, but after 30+ trips south, it doesn't have the magic anymore

Regards, Sveinn

Nice trip report and well done on getting the first ever 773! I love CX and I thought they were really good when I flew them RUH-BAH-HKG-RUH 2 years ago, my 3rd favourite airline (after BA and FI)

I love Hong Kong and I could go there so often, Tokyo, maybe - doesn't have the same appeal as Hong Kong still does having been there. Still, nice trip report and photos and as always, I look forward to the next parts

Enjoyed your trip report! Please include more pictures of Tokyo next time. I lived just outside Tokyo for 4 years and I loved it there!
I flew on RPC-7776 2 years ago MNL-NRT. I really like the 777-300ER best.
I flew BKK-HKG-BKK on CX last week on their 777-300. The meals were ok, but of all the Asian airlines, I like their service the best. I have had the privilege of riding cockpit jumpseat on their 777-300 and 747-400. That all changed after 11 September.
I might have asked you this, but which airline do you work for and what do you do?

I missed this when you first posted it. Was nice to see the photos from Tokyo...possibly my favourite ever city. Also nice to see the CX Y class offering. I'm pondering taking them ion a few months HKG-BKK-DEL, but not sure if it's worth spending the extra to fly in C (regional C) or not...their Y class is quite good.

Well, I flew their A330 BKK-DEL and the seats were not comfortable with a HUGE IFE box taking all your legroom space. Would recommend to book C if possible.

Yeah, the crane is very classy. They could do a black/red cheatline on the body or something to spice it up though!

Hi Sveinn,

I may not be reading your report in chronological order, but I instantly get attracted to this particular part out of your marvelous series because of one thing. B-HNH!

I had the honor of being on board of this first ever delivered 773 last March 4, 2012 on HKG-BKK-SIN route, and how I was excited as you were!

Love your pictures of Hong Kong and Tokyo as well!

Thanks for sharing.
