Scandinavia Trip And GOT-CPH-EWR-CHS

This is my first trip report so I'm sorry for the few images relating to the airports and airplanes (I didn't think I was going to finally take the step and do a TR).

My best friend is Swedish, so after we finished our third year of college, I decided to go out to visit him for a while. My Dad had some miles on United that were about to expire, so I booked an award ticket to Gothenburg, Sweden from my home airport of Charleston, SC.

The only picture on the way out that I took was from my flight from MUC-GOT. It was on Lufthansa operated by Augsburg Airways. It was on a brand new E190 aircraft (I was amazed how large the plane was!). The flight was empty, and here's a picture from the row across from me.

And here are some pictures from my trip. My buddy lives right outside Gothenburg, Sweden, and we traveled to Oslo, Copenhagen, and Malmö.







Alright so now to my report on the way back to the states.


GOT-CPH SK1439 (SAS) A319

My flight departed at 6:30 am. So naturally, my buddy and I just stayed up all night until he had to take me to the airport. I checked in at the SAS kiosk then proceeded to the counter to drop my bag off. The agent was a summer intern, and she seemed new and unfamiliar. She was very rude and said to me "don't you have a boarding pass?" Oh well, it was early. And I don't speak Swedish but still, a little nicer would've been nice.

My buddy and I got a cup of coffee, then after a few minutes said our goodbyes, and I went through security. It was so easy and nice! I looked around the duty free store while I was waiting for the plane to board, and I bought a bag of Daim Candy (It's the best!).

Boarding started not much later, and was quick and easy. The flight was relatively empty. I was surprised that SAS operates a A319 for such a short route. The crew was very friendly, and I really enjoyed their safety announcement. It was shown on the monitors but it just seemed more clever than the US airlines. We pushed back and took off not much after that. A quick beverage service was started. I got some coffee and started to admire the beautiful scenery outside my window. I had the middle seat open next to me, so I was able to spread out a little which is always nice.

I was just in Copenhagen the previous day, so it was kind of a waste to go back to Gothenburg but oh well! And I was also in Malmö which is right across from Copenhagen, so I was able to recognize some of the sites as we approached. We arrived super early into a dead Copenhagen airport.

I decided to grab a quick breakfast, look around in the beautiful Copenhagen terminal, and then proceed to my gate. I went through EU customs and went to the United gate. Security agents asked everyone a bunch of questions before they allowed us to proceed to the second part of the boarding zone.

I had thought the flight was going to be fairly empty but it actually was pretty crowded. I was lucky to have an aisle seat with the middle seat available, which is great for a 9 hour flight. Crew was ok. Most of the flight attendants just seemed kind of fake and uninterested. However, there was one FA in coach who was excellent, a really nice guy. Always gave me a full can of Coke Zero and actually gave me an extra sandwich when the pre-arrival snack was served. The food actually wasn't too bad. Small portions but that's expected. The FA's were good about coming through the cabin with drinks and water during the flight. I really like UA's entertainment. You have your own TV and a ton of movies, tv shows, music, and games to choose from on demand. I watched The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which was pretty fitting since I had just left Sweden.

I have never flown into EWR on a plane bigger than an E145 (I have flown out of EWR on 764's but never arrived on an aircraft larger than an E145). Wow, those pilots really have to maneuver that plane into EWR. It was a pretty crazy approach with many turns at low altitudes, but nonetheless we landed in EWR early. I think this flight is one of the first international flights to come in for the day, thus making customs very easy and quick. I went through customs, claimed my bag, re-checked it to CHS, and then took the air train to terminal A where my flight to CHS left out of.

Boarding started on-time, and we quickly boarded the small aircraft. I really like the Expressjet E145's. They always seem clean and very well maintained. It was your typical no-frills regional airline flight. The FA wasn't too friendly, but not mean by any means. A beverage service was started right after takeoff, and before you know it, we were descending into CHS. I have flown in and out of CHS many times, but I have never been on this certain approach. We passed directly over the Ravenel Bridge (the bridge that makes Charleston famous). What a cool sight from such a close distance in the air!

We landed a little early, I got my bag, and my parents picked me up short after. Overall a great trip. Thanks for reading my first TR!

Nice photos,

The twist and turns into EWR is due to the main arrival runway undergoing repaveing . You probably landed on the crosswind runway 11/29 which is only about 6,600 ft. Long. The approach to that runway involves lots of turns at low altitudes, depending on what side of the aircraft you are om it offers fantastic views as one of the last turns you make is almost on top of Liberty state park next the Statue of Liberty.
