The Business Way To Singapore: ARN-FRA-SIN

This is a tripreport covering my recent journey to Singapore together with my family.

In the evening of November 10th 2011, airliners.net member Jonas, LH4116, mentioned that Lufthansa is having a 11/11-11 sale, selling Business Class tickets to a number of longhaul destinations, for only 1111 EUR for a return trip. These prices was available ex-Europe, with a shorthaul connecting leg in Business included for the same price. And for some reason these prices were available already on evening of the 10th.
The destination that got most attention from me on this offer was Singapore. It was the one that was furthest away of the available destinations, and it was also a place I had long wanted to visit.
But then again, I didn't have the money to go on a journey costing 1111 EUR, with the additional expenses of being abroad.
Later that evening, I told my mother about this deal over the phone. And when I mentioned Singapore, she realized two things: That 1111 EUR is incredibly cheap for such a long journey in Business Class. And that my fathers company, where both me and my mother works part-time, has company relations in Singapore.
After consulting with my father, the three of us decided that we should take the opportunity to visit our relations in Singapore by booking a trip during this limited time offer.
So on that evening, we booked ourselves on ARN-FRA-SIN-FRA-ARN, all in Business class, for 1111 EUR per person. This would be my first time traveling longhaul in Business class, after experiencing it on short haul for the first time earlier this year (see: Try It Before It's Gone, TXL & Bmi ARN-TXL-LHR-ARN (by deltamartin Jan 9 2012 in Trip Reports) ).
The ARN-FRA-ARN flights were to be operated by SAS, due to favorable price and timings. The longhaul flights, operated by LH, were scheduled on the A380, which I was rather happy about in March this year, when I missed out on the opportunity to try it.
However, a few weeks before departure, LH announced that the A380 would be replaced by the Boeing 747-400 a few weeks in April. Both of our flights were affected.
I was bummed about again missing the A380, but I was still glad that it would be operated on a 747, a type I hadn't flown since 1998.
Needless to say, I was still quite exited about going on my first ever longhaul Business flight. Also, I had never been as far away from home as Singapore.
This trip would also allow me to visit FRA and fly LH mainline for the first time.

Since the return journey has the same routing and the same kind of aircraft in both directions, and both of the longhaul journeys were over-night flights I have decided to mainly cover the outbound journey, and only write a short summary of the inbound flights.

April 6

We parked at the parking garage beneath Sky City and made our way towards Terminal 5.

We checked in at the manned Business Class check-in desk, mainly to take use of any available perk of flying Business Class!

The SAS employee at the desk asked us if we were flying in Business, we told him that we did, and we were quickly checked in, our three bags were checked all the way to Singapore.
We received the standard SAS-branded boarding passes which were our boarding pass for both ARN-FRA and FRA-SIN. I very much like this, one of the reasons being that they can't tare this boarding pass at the gate.
We were also advised by the check-in agent that we could use the Fast Track security line.

So that's where we headed. And with only a couple of people ahead of us, we were through in no time.

After security we headed through the tax free store and pretty much went straight to the lounge.

The FIDS told us that our gate would be F33, so on the way to the lounge I peaked at that gate, only to see LN-RCT parked there. Perhaps it will be our ride in a couple of hours.

Once at the lounge we were welcomed to the Business Class lounge after showing our boarding passes to the lounge agent who looked like she'd rather be somewhere else.

We settled down in some comfy armchairs at the inner sanctum on the lounge, next to some windows overlooking the older check-in hall at ARN T5.

I must say I was positively surprised about the offerings in this lounge, it was better than it was on my only previous visit to an SAS lounge, the business class lounge at OSL (see: Scandinavian Capital Hopping: ARN-OSL-ARN On SAS (by deltamartin Jan 16 2012 in Trip Reports) ).

Here at ARN there were a couple of cold dishes, sandwiches with spreads, salads, snacks, cookies, wines, beer, soft drinks and hot drinks.

The lounge was overall clean, but a little worn at places. It was quite empty during our visit.

We decided to head towards our gate as soon as the status of our flight said “Go to Gate”, as the F-pier, where gate F33 is located, is quite a distance away.

As we reached the gate boarding had just begun, we had to queue a little but we were soon heading down the jetway.

As we boarded I was greeted by an older female FA, the other two cabin crew members was a middle aged male and a young female. The young female turned out to be the one mainly serving the Business Class cabin.

I took a few steps to the seat I selected months ago, at the time of booking, which was 2F. I put my backpack in the overhead bin and settled down.

Boarding was soon completed, 1½ rows of Business Class today, 1 row of Economy extra. There were a total of 5 passengers in the business cabin, and I believe it was 5 people in Eco+ too. Economy seemed to have a rather healthy load.

The crew preformed a manual safety demo and shortly after we pushed back.

It was pretty cloudy over Sweden today, so not much views of the ground after we entered the clouds shortly after takeoff.

After takeoff we banked to the left, preforming a 270 degree turn lining us up towards Frankfurt.

Shortly after, the seatbelt sign was turned off, and shortly after that, we were given hot towels and later magazines by the male FA. The young FA shortly afterward offered pre-meal drinks together with almonds. I decided to have some champagne (the joys of flying in Business Class) together with some sparkling water.

A little later the hot meal was served, unlike on my first Business class flight with BA in January, there was no choice regarding meal and I was served fish with some sort of risotto and asparagus. The fish was very tasty together with the sauce, although one could feel it was reheated, it was rather wet etc. The asparagus was a nice touch and it was overall a nice dish.

As the picture shows, it was served together with a selection of cheese.

The dessert was this chocolate bar. Small but very tasty.

After the meal I had some coffee.

After this I spent the rest of the flight just relaxing and chatting with my travel companions.

It was pretty cloudy during the entire flight, so not many views of the ground. The clouds became more and more sparse the closer we got to Frankfurt, though.

Soon our descent was initiated and 10 minutes later the seatbelt sign was turned on.

As we went through the cloud layer, the ground became more and more visible, and soon enough, I noticed the town of Frankfurt pop up on my side of the plane.

Landing on 25R meant quite a long taxi. About 10-15 minutes after touching down we reached our gate at the end of the A pier.

I managed to be the first one to exit the aircraft and I thanked the crew as I did so. Once in the jetway I turned around and took a picture of my father as he deboarded after me. The jetway operator noticed me doing this, she pointed up the jetway and told me “If you walk further up you can take a good picture of the plane”. I was very surprised to hear her say that since when an airport employee talks about picturetaking it's more often to say it's not allowed.

Needless to say, my first impression of FRA was very good!

The impression of FRA didn't become any worse when entering the terminal. This part of the A-pier was very bright, airy and clean.

As we had a layover of almost 5 hours, we decided to head for the lounge opposite to gate A26 before continuing to the lounge connected to our gate at the C-pier.

We were let in to the Business Lounge without any problems. We took a seat next to some big windows with a great view of some of the action at FRA.

The lounge was nice with a good selection of food and drinks, including hard liquor, wine, beer, soft drinks, snacks and some hot dishes. There were also showers available.

After an hour or so in the lounge we decided to head towards the gate assigned to our next flight, over at the C-pier.

To do this we had to go landside, which wasn't a problem really since I wanted to take the opportunity to take a look at that famous check-in hall of FRA.

The check-in hall was rather impressive, but more so was the classic FIDS.

We were soon heading to the passport control, which was very quick without any queue.

The tax free stores did not interest us at this time, so we just went towards our gate and through security straight away.

There were no queue at the fast track security (or at the normal security checkpoint either for that matter) so we were quickly through.

After security there was a quick boarding pass/passport check, once passed we went straight to our lounge located at our gate C14.

This lounge was also very nice, albeit not as good food and drink offerings as the previous lounge. But that's really to be expected when it's a lounge dedicated to one gate only.

Soon after we got seated in the lounge we saw the 744 dedicated to our flight taxi to the gate. D-ABVN, Dortmund, would do the honors today.

I scanned my boarding pass at the self-service scanner and I was let through. Down a couple of escalators and we were soon at the jetway leading to door 1L of the jumbo.

I was greeted at the door by a rather old blonde FA. The other FA's serving our part of the cabin was two more oldish German woman, and an Asian woman.

I chose seat for this flight on the same evening I found out that it would be operated by a 744 instead of an A380. There was one open seatpair in the nose section, so I quickly grabbed it, since it's not likely I will get the chance to sit in the nose of a 747 again.

So I turned left and sat down on my seat 4A, on the last row of the nose section. Each seat had a pillow and a blanket provided.

As the stream of boarding business class passengers calmed down the FA's walked around the cabin with trays offering pre-departure drinks. Water, OJ and Champagne was on offer.

Shortly after, boarding was completed and the safety demo was shown on the screens.

It took a surprisingly long time before they turned the seatbelt sign off (is this a LH thing?). Shortly after we were offered hot towels.

At this time I decided to explore my seat.
The seat itself was very comfortable for sitting and lounging. The sleeping test would come later when I got tired. The following pictures are taken on various times during the flight:

It was soon time for dinner which begun with a drinks run and menu distribution.

Keeping in mind that LH serves their beer in glass bottles, I decided to have one. I asked for sparkling water along with it. It was served together with some almonds.

I decided to have the Salmon Confit for entree. It tasted good enough, no complaints at all.

As none of the main dishes really spoke to me I decided on the “Lufthansa Classics” Beef Stroganoff. Nothing wrong with the dish, but it was rather small, and as mentioned, it didn't really speak to me.

The rhubarb/yoghurt cake for dessert was okay. A little tasteless. We were also offered apertifs, I had some Baileys.

Overall, a fairly nice, but not really impressive, meal.

After the meal service the FA's walked around the cabin asking everyone to shut their blinds on the windows, since the sun would go up in the middle of the night. I obliged since there wasn't much to see outside at that time anyway and I was planning on sleeping too.

At this time the flight attendants also put some drinks on a tray on a table in the middle of the nose section so that passengers were free to grab a glass whenever they liked.

I decided to do some exploring around the aircraft.

Walking through the cabin I did not spot a single open seat. Well, this flight was scheduled to be operated by the A380 not too long ago.

As I got back to my seat I decided to put the seat in a lounge position, and enjoy an episode of Modern Family. This was the only time I used the IFE-system to anything else than the airshow, so I can't say much about it. But it did seem to be decent enough with a fairly nice selection. The airshow itself were also nice, but it was an old one without any interaction.

After the episode was finished, I turned of the IFE-screen and put my seat in the lie-flat position, to get some sleep.

April 7

I was awoken about 1hr 40 min before landing by my Mother, that informed me that the Breakfast service was just about to begin. I had a good nights sleep and felt rather rested.

I didn't eat too much of it, I'm not a big fan of bread with raisins. The mini-salamis were very tasty though, and I like the touch with the ceramic goat.

I spent the rest of the flight looking out my window and keeping an eye on the airshow. It was a little cloudy outside, but I was treated with some nice views.

Shortly after the seatbelt sign was turned on we did however begin our descent towards Singapore Changi Airport.

It was rather hazy, so even if I was seated at the left side of the aircraft, and we approached SIN from the southwest, I did not see much at all of Singapore.

Landing on runway 02C meant a very short taxi to our gate at one of the piers of Terminal 2.

We docked to an A380 gate with three jetways, since we weren't on an A380 only two of the jetways were in use.

I grabbed my belongings and went out of door 1L a little over 12 hours after I entered it.

Immediately when exiting the plane and entering the jetway I could feel the humidity that Singapore is so famous for. I continued the walk up the jetway to the air-conditioned air of the terminal, snapping a picture or two on the way.

My first impression when entering the terminal was very good. Bright, clean and modern. Very nice. I could easily see why this airport is so popular among frequent travelers.

The arrival process at SIN was very nice. After arrival one is released in the transit lounge so one does not have to walk through endless and sterile corridors when transiting or arriving at SIN.

We walked to the terminal and followed the signs for arriving passengers, and a few minutes later we reached the immigration desks, which had a quick 3 minute queue. Once at the desk our passports were quickly stamped and we were released in to the baggage reclaim. Very impressive how easy it all went.

Once at the baggage belt assigned to our flight our bags were already waiting for us. What can I say, the arrival process at SIN was very, very impressive.

We spent a few very enjoyable days in Singapore. We did not only work during our visit, we luckily had time to do some touristy stuff too.

We decided to stay at the Marina Bay Sands, mainly due to the fact that we wanted to take a swim at the famous rooftop pool. Here's some pictures from and of the complex:

The Singapore Flyer was an experience, currently being the tallest Ferris wheel in the world, reaching a height of 165 meters. It offered some really nice views of Singapore and the Marina Bay Sands complex.

The Singapore Flyer was also the starting point a “Duck Tour” we did. It was an old revamped amphibious military vehicle that was used for a mixed land and sea tour. It was a very good was of seeing central Singapore as a tourist. A very nice experience.

We also visited Sentosa Island, where we did a number of activities. Without realizing it at first. We bought tickets to a tour group, which meant we went around to a number of places with a bus. Due to this, we found the whole thing a bit too touristy for us. I'm sure Sentosa is beautiful if we'd get to see it from a different perspective though.

The SilverKris lounge was a very pleasant experience. Good selections of hot and cold foods, and a nice drink selection. The only downside was the lack of views. No windows at all.

Over-all, SIN really does seem to be a 5-star airport. As mentioned, I can see why people rate it so highly.

Summary of the return journey

LH779, SIN-FRA, was operated by D-ABVH “Düsseldorf”, sadly not in the ”50 Years Innovation Partnership Boeing”-livery anymore. The flight was pretty much the same as the outbound one, I spent most of it sleeping. We were offered a horrible tasting Singapore Sling as a choice for pre-departure drink. I was seated in 11A which appeared to have a little more legroom than 4A, maybe they have to reduce it a little to fit 4 rows in that nose section.

The layover in FRA was mostly spent in the A-pier lounge again. It was nice but rather crowded in the morning rush-hours.

We flew back to Stockholm on SK1632, operated by a 736 with the reg SE-DTH ”Vile Viking”. Pretty much an exact copy of the ARN-FRA flight a few days earlier. Another fish-dish that tasted okay.

To sum things up,

I got to fly SAS and LH in Business Class on the routing ARN-FRA-SIN-FRA-ARN on a ticket with the pricetag 1111 EUR. That value is pretty much unbeatable. I'm very thankful that LH had this promotion so that I got the opportunity to do this journey.

SAS intra-Europe Business Class was good, no complaints. I would like a proper dessert instead of just a little chocolate bar, but that's just a minor detail. And less sweet stuff is good for the health anyways. The crews were nice and all.

LH longhaul business class was also a very nice experience. Nice crews, okay food, a comfortable seat that worked well sleeping in (for me at least, but I can imagine that a proper flat-bed seat is even better for sleeping).

FRA was a huge airport that does what it's supposed to do. Some long walking distances but that's to be expected at such an airport. I must say that overall I like FRA. At least based on these two layovers.

SIN was perfect. Incredibly smooth arrival. Very smooth check-in and departure as well. Modern and clean. The one and only (minor) complaint is the location of the security checks, at the gates. I prefer to have them when one enters airside. Still, it's easily the best airport I have ever been to.

Great report on your trip to Singapore! Seems like I was in SIN around the same time as you were there. I arrived from HKG April 10 (how I got there is a secret which will be told in my next TR, part 7 of my RTW series   ) and departed for Thailand on TG April 12.

Singapore was great! Unfortunately, as I was on standby tickets, I couldn't book hotels far in advance. I would've booked Marina Bay Sands, but the fare 2 days in advance was 800 USD a night! No thank you.  

I actually quite like the security at the gate concept, less queues (in my experience) instead of having up to 1000 people in the same queue (can happen in such a big airport).

Well glad to be at help, many of the tickets sold out the following day so the availability was still quite good in the evening before. Shame that I wasn't able to book that, as I'd already booked my SWISS tickets. A bummer indeed, but hopefully next time they have such offer I'd jump it right away

Wow, very nice of SQ to let partner *A pax use their beloved SilverKris Lounge. For very long it's been kept exclusively for SQ J, condemning partner *A carriers to use crappy contract lounges, and *G to use the inferior KrisFlyer Gold Lounge.

Yeah most of the SK MD80s that are still around are based at CPH.

Yeah, on the 744's that currently are deployed on the ARN route they sell an old First Class as Business and an old Business Class as Premium Economy. I believe ARN will get the same kind of 744's as CPH will get but at a later stage, August if I'm not mistaken.

SK seems to have dismal legroom; that would be okay for Y but for C totally inadequate even for short haul. Meal don't look good either.

LH has a better seat but no horizontal lie flat seat is not good and the meal doesn't look that great either. Singapore looks great and there's so much to do there.

Amazing with the roof top pool!

Wasn't too bad for these 1hr 40mins flights. One can't expect too much of the hardware of intra-Europe C-class nowadays.

The seat was very comfortable as a seat. I can't really compare it to anything else when it comes to sleeping but I can definitely imagine that a horizontal surface makes quite the difference!

Well not that many times, but some 15 times over the past 7-8 years, enough to form a judgement of the airport. I do however remember at one occasion back in the days when LH4116 used to operate as a daytime service, it was the middle of the summer and the place was indeed packed. Luckily traveling as a UM on Lufthansa, I was escorted past the lines by the agent, and driven to the gate in one of those golfcars. But still it's a nice airport that I much prefer over AMS or CDG.

Very nice that you managed to fly SAS on the shorthaul segments, SAS shorthaul business class is far superior to the LH one. A shame about missing the whalejets, but then again 747s aren't that common these days anymore, so better fly those when they are still around. BTW FRA-SIN is the longest route in the whole LH network so you certainly got your money's worth of flying there  

Finally some beautiful pictures from Singapore. That infinity pool looks amazing but I think I'd be scared as hell there on the edge...

The Singapore Flyer was also the starting point a “Duck Tour” we did. It was an old revamped amphibious military vehicle that was used for a mixed land and sea tour. It was a very good was of seeing central Singapore as a tourist. A very nice experience.

Must be quite something to be on land and then in the water...Never heard of a tour like this before.
