B A C K G R O U N D

I first flew on a Alitalia 777 on 1Mar03 and wrote a trip report but with no pictures. So when I was going to Italy to see my friends there, this was a good opportunity to AZ and their 777 again. I could then write another report and it would also be great to fly nonstop to Rome. There are not many reports on AZ on their LAX-FCO service either. It’s also nice to compare the experience from nine years ago to now.

T H E T R I P
Date: 29May12
Route: Los Angeles LAX – Rome FCO
Distance: 6354 miles
Flight: AZ 621
Flight Time: 11:29h
Dep. Time: 15:19
Aircraft: Boeing 777-243/ER
Registration: EI-ISB “Porto Rotondo”
Dep. Gate: 27
Seat: 29D
Movies: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
202nd flight on a Boeing 777, 103rd flight on a -200/ER
Flown on 117 different 777 aircraft (frames)

I arrived at the check in counter about 90 minutes before departure and there was a line of about 10 people. Most people had a few large bags to check in except me. The wait wasn’t too bad; about 15 minutes. It was finally my turn and it was a quick process. The agent gave me 29D which I figured was an aisle and I asked her about a window and she said that there were no windows for now but to check at the gate.

Security was fairly quick and I was thru in about 10 minutes. There were not that many people at the gate so I figured that the flight wasn’t that full. I looked for the registration of the aircraft and was happy to see that it was a different aircraft than what I flew on in 2003. Boarding started about 45 minutes before departure and first was Classe Magnifica and then was done by row numbers. I checked again for a window seat but still no window available. A lot people were still crowding the gate reader so I waited until only a few people were there.

I noticed once I got on board that the configuration was 3-4-3 rather than the 3-3-3 that I had expected. There was also a small Premium Economy class section of 3 rows (2-4-2) which I think is fairly new. I sat down and could tell right away that legroom was good.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/TriptoEuropeJune2012007.jpg

The TV screen looked exactly the same as nine years ago but think the seats are different.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/TriptoEuropeJune2012008.jpg

I also saw the HUGE IFE box underneath but it wasn’t too bad as it was mostly under the seat next to me.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/TriptoEuropeJune2012010.jpg

The seat was also very comfortable.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/TriptoEuropeJune2012005.jpg

There was also a blanket and a pillow at every seat and in the seat pocket an inflight magazine along with safety card and duty free catalogue.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/June2012toEurope019.jpg

The door closed and the seat next to me remained open which was great. The second center seat was also open but there was someone in the other aisle seat. The cabin was clean and fresh. There was no legrest which was featured on my previous flight. Safety video was played and cabin crew did safety checks. Surprisingly, the cabin crew were still walking around the airplane checking on other things even when the aircraft had turned onto the runway!! We sat a there for about a minute and then started a powerful take off roll.

After about an hour a drink service started and I tried an Italian beer.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/TriptoEuropeJune2012014.jpg

They gave me Castello which I had never heard of along with pretzels. I also found an unopened snack in the seat pocket in front of me. The beer was good and I start to watch the airshow map and then looked at the Ulisse magazine. I also started to explore the InFlight Entertainment system and was very happy to see one of my current favorite TV shows on there, Inspector Montalbano (Italian TV-series). I watched Montalbano first and soon the dinner was served.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/TriptoEuropeJune2012016.jpg

Options were beef or fish and I had the beef. It also came with a ham appetizer, pasta and honey dew melon along with grape for dessert. There was also a piece of bread but no salad. I still preferred the pasta instead of a salad so still a fairly large meal. It was very tasty. I had Coca-cola and blood-orange juice to drink which was served in cups and I had two of those with the meal. I had tea afterwards.

I watched the first movie and noticed that he IFE controller is not very easy to use and I could see my fellow passengers struggle with it as well. The controller as well as the IFE menu screen were the same as in 2003.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/TriptoEuropeJune2012012.jpg

I slept for about two hours and had something to drink when I woke up. The crew were doing drink runs about every hour and it was good to see that it was not only water but also juice, milk and Coca-cola as well.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/TriptoEuropeJune2012027.jpg

Breakfast was served about 1h 45mins before landing which seemed a bit early but it gives time for people to go to the bathroom and prepare for landing in plenty of time before the seat belt sign is turnd on back again. Breakfast was croissant, bread, ham, some cheese and yoghurt. I had tea to go with it as well.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/TriptoEuropeJune2012024.jpg

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/TriptoEuropeJune2012023.jpg

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/TriptoEuropeJune2012018.jpg

Routing was over Denver, Milwaukee, Montreal, New Foundland, Lorient, Limoges, Torino and Pisa to Rome. Cruising altitude was first about 34 000 and later we made it up to 39 000 feet.

All in all, a great flight with Alitalia. The crew was also very friendly.
Looking forward to any comments!

Hi and thanks for sharing.
Alitalia has improved a lot since the new management has been appointed along with new ownership. I guess they somehow benefit from the AFKL experience and have finally understood there's competition around.
I like the idea of early breakfast on such a long flight. Tooth brushing is almost impossible with other carriers when the last meal is served to close to top of descent.

Yes, the IFE box is huge but the new seats look definitely more comfortable than the older ones.

Hope you enjoy your return!

Cheers!

Great report!

I flew on an AZ 777 back in 2007 from EWR to FCO, and despite all of their troubles during that time, I found the flight to be very enjoyable. The seats were comfortable, the crew was friendly, and the food was very tasty!

Glad to see you had a nice flight as well. It's obviously upsetting to see an airline switch to 3-4-3, but truthfully I think it's becoming such a norm now that it's not even worth complaining about anymore (not that you did or anything).

Great pic. The 777 looks angry and intimidating!

This, however, is a let down. If they updated the seats, why not just update the IFE as well? That's an outdated system, although at least it's AVOD.

Very much I enjoyed your TR and guess it's a try to get on AZ one day!! You know if the A32S are similar in Y like on the 777?

My LH JFK-FRA back in NOV 2011 served smaller portion but givne the flight was fast due to tail wind, breakfast was served too soon lol

Thank you for sharing. Cabin crew counts when it comes to medium/long-haul flight.

Yes, very good point. When a breakfast is served too late, it gets a bit too rushed.

Quoting okapi (Reply 1):

The old seat was very comfortable too as I recall. I just have never seen an IFE box that huge before. It's the size of four regular sized boxes put together!

Hope you enjoy your return!

Flew onwards to ZRH and ARN on LX and then back home to LAX on UA.

That's too bad connections don't work on the way back to CCS. Perhaps they only focus on domestic Italian connections. Or you fly out of the day before and spend an evening in Rome

Yes, my last fight was okay with them in 2003 but this was better. Especially the meal and the crew was much better this time.

The 3-4-3 was not bad. I think the aisle gets more narrow. But keep in mind that I had the seat next to me open and with someone there with the huge IFE box, that person would be putting their legs in the same space where I would put my legs.

Quoting MHTripple7 (Reply 3):
The 777 looks angry and intimidating!

Yes, it looks very good from that angle and therefore I took the picture. Too bad it was not un-obstructed.

Quoting MHTripple7 (Reply 3):

Yes, I was surprised they had the same system when they had changed the seats. The system was state of the art in 2003 but not in 2012.

Yes, that used to be very common. This was an aircraft in the old livery and with the new livery the black nose is gone on AZ too.

I don't think it was dangerous, just very big. Look at the comparison to my shoe!

It makes a BIG difference to have the seat next to me open in terms of comfort. More than legroom I would say.

That's too bad. Well, I have to say, though, this flight is one of the ones that might have prompted me to ask for an aisle... I liked the 777 in its 2-5-2 days, but ever since it switched to 3-3-3 or 3-4-3... it's not for me on long flights, unfortunately.

Quoting The777Man (Thread starter):

Yeah, both 2-4-2 and 3-4-3 configs are fairly new. I was actually really disappointed about hearing about the 3-4-3 but I guess it's not horrendously worse than a 3-3-3, although light-years behind a 2-5-2 or 2-4-3....

That meal looks really good. No wonder AZ wins awards for their catering. Catering ex-FCO is even good on DL, imagine that. I couldn't given the meals they serve ex-USA...

Seats are like train seats, a bland uninspiring grey; probably my least favorite color for seats. Light enough to get dirty and not interesting in any way.

Thanks for the report The777Man. Looking forward to many other 777 reports, especially T5 once you find a way to do it!

Well, tbh, I'd choose AZ over any airline from the USA transatlantically. I wanted to try JFK-FCO on AZ but their website is so bad that they weren't selling tickets on their own late-night departure from NY so I was stuck with DL and the same worst meal I'd received on a previous TATL flight on them.

2-5-2 is nice if you have a choice which is something I rarely have. 3-3-3 is great if the flight is very open; much easier to sleep on 3 seats than 2....

EK has had 3-4-3 ever since they took delivery of the 777 in June 1996. Same for CZ.

3-4-3 is not as bad as some people think. A lot of the time, the aisle gets more narrow and the seat only gets slightly more narrow if at all.

nice report, and good to compare with your old one without the pictures!

Did you like the blood orange juice? User Palmjet called it "delicious" in another report

Also good to see the meal, 2 hot courses is I think normal in Italy, one of them pasta, the second meat.

Hey Lars, nice report!

Not too often we get to see Alitalia Long Haul reports on the forum, more importantly the last one in Y on the T7 was from PlaneHunter right before the "bankruptcy" if memory serves me right.

The food onboard looked almost identical to what PH was served. The trays look really generous, and I like the way the main course is divided into two compartments. Is the content of the 2nd compartment the same also on the other meal option?

Seats however did not look nice at all, very unergonomic and it seems like they've simply just moved the massive IFE box from the old seats to the new.

Quite unusual, offering milk. I was given it for the first time on a plane by SQ.

Hope the rest of your trip went well.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 15):
Not too often we get to see Alitalia Long Haul reports on the forum, more importantly the last one in Y on the T7 was from PlaneHunter right before the "bankruptcy" if memory serves me right.

The food onboard looked almost identical to what PH was served. The trays look really generous, and I like the way the main course is divided into two compartments. Is the content of the 2nd compartment the same also on the other meal option?

I think you are right; I don't think I've seen an AZ report in Y since PlaneHunter's report on the 777.

I also like that there were two compartments for the meal but not sure if the second compartment was the second with the other portion. I was not close enough to another passenger to see that.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 15):
Seats however did not look nice at all, very unergonomic and it seems like they've simply just moved the massive IFE box from the old seats to the new.

Seats were comfortable even at the end of the flight. Not sure if the seats are the same since there now are four in the middle.

Hi Hannah!

Quoting infodesk (Reply 16):
That's massive!

Yes it is ! Probably four times larger than anything else I have ever seen before on any other carrier.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 16):
The meal looks generous enough, but not particularly appetising. Am I correct that the cutlery is plastic? Shame if it is.

Cutlery is plastic which is too bad but very common these days. Food was very tasty but not presented very well.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 16):
Quite unusual, offering milk. I was given it for the first time on a plane by SQ.

I've been offered that before on some other carriers, I think on TG and NH. Perhaps on MH as well.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 16):
Hope the rest of your trip went well

Yes, no problem; flew LX FCO-ZRH and ZRH-ARN and had two great flights with them. Then back home on UA via EWR. Too bad I couldn't meet up with you at ZRH or the others at Berlin. Flight from Berlin on 3 June were just too full to most places where I would go especially stand by. I'll definitely will make every effort to attend the next trip report meeting and will be back in ZRH to see my friend there.

Thanks for all the comments !

-You really lucky to have many flights on a 777 but tell me: You don't have a job?

I do ! I had my first 777 flight in Sep95 so have been doing this a while. For more info, look at my profile and check out my website and especially My 777 Flights page.

Thanks, that is really great and you did so many trips on the 777!!!! About the job was really only the joke.. seams to me that there is simply flying   But like the page you have there and very much detailed. And you really the 777man   I had till now only two flights on a 777 last Feb & Mar. Was on EI-UNT and EI-UNU on the Leg's DME-SGN-DME!!

Cheers from ZRH.

Hi Lars ,

Nice report and nice routing . Glad AZ offered you good service. I like the interior design of their aircraft. Something different to the masses.

Thanks for sharing .

2-5-2 is nice if you have a choice which is something I rarely have. 3-3-3 is great if the flight is very open; much easier to sleep on 3 seats than 2....

I've not been on a very open flight TATL in a very long time, however...

Quoting The777Man (Reply 12):
EK has had 3-4-3 ever since they took delivery of the 777 in June 1996. Same for CZ.

Well... I recall being surprised around 2000 when I saw CZ had 777s, since I'd never heard of the airline before. I had no idea it was 3-4-3 at that time, but it doesn't really surprise me.

Quoting The777Man (Reply 12):
3-4-3 is not as bad as some people think. A lot of the time, the aisle gets more narrow and the seat only gets slightly more narrow if at all.

I bet it's not too bad for a few hours. Not much worse than a typical 737/757, except it's harder to get a window seat, I suppose.

Quoting The777Man (Reply 12):
Your welcome! Another report probably later this year. I WILL get on the T5 77L, hopefully together with Abrelosjos.

Turkmenistan I hear is a very interesting place to visit. Well, not in the typical way, but Turkmenbashi's reign was a very particular one, I hear... I'd love to go, but I don't know if I'd have the time. Letter of invitation is also a hassle.

Quoting The777Man (Reply 12):
Check out my old reports on here or on my website thru my profile here.

Yep, was taking a look at your website.

I see you flew on N782UA 4 times... I flew on it on DEN-SFO. Coincidentally, it seems we both flew once on a KL 772, both on PH-BQC.

The crew was also very friendly.

I've never flown AZ long-haul because of some of the stories that I heard from others who have taken this very same flight and my own long to medium haul experiences with them. This trip was certainly an eye-opener. Who knows, if the price is right, maybe I'll try them.

Thanks for sharing.

I think it's not too difficult to get a transit visa for Turkmenistan and I've heard that they could be valid up to 72 h so you can actually see something then.

AZ was quite good and a better experience this time than last. You should give them a try.

Hi Lars,

Nice report and pictures, thanks for posting.

AZ have started to reregister the 777 fleet onto the EI- reg, there are at least 2 done that I know of.

Looks like a pretty decent flight, nice to have an open seat next to you, food looked pretty good and the breakfast puts pretty much all US carriers to shame.

Not bad!

Cheers

Mark

I know of three; ISB, ISD and ISO.

Too bad; I much prefer a carrier to have its aircraft registered in its own country.

Yes, a very good flight and breakfast was pretty good too. I've had some good breakfasts recently on US carries but on TransPacific flights.

Thanks again!
