A Shiny City Debut: Alitalia's New E-Jet To Milan

I first became “acquainted” with Alitalia long before 2012. It would have been the late 1970s for sure when I was 4 or 5 years old in Australia. Despite not flying to Brisbane (BNE), and in fact, never flying to Brisbane, Alitalia maintained a fairly large city ticketing office at a major intersection in the centre of the city. Every time I came into town, I always used to beg my parents to go and see the big Alitalia model they had in the window there. I remember it was a very large B747-200 on stand with that distinctive, and now iconic, “A” logo painted on the tail. I was so transfixed and used to press my face against the window for ages to marvel at such an amazing model. I guess being an avia geek is a lifelong passion for me, as it is to many readers here.

ALITALIA’S DECLINE

As the years passed, Alitalia’s reputation in Australia seemed to wane – I heard and read stories about old aircraft, late flights, indifferent crews and poor catering. By the time AZ eventually ceased flying to Australia entirely, I am not sure it was an airline anyone ever purposely chose to fly with to Rome and beyond via Bangkok, unless the price was right or there were no seats available on the likes of Cathay, Singapore or even Qantas. Even after I moved to the UK in 2004, Alitalia’s reputation seemed less than stellar in Europe – the same old complaints, the same old Alitalia. Sadly, this led to much internal strife culminating the in the airline’s bankruptcy in 2008. I believe 2008-2009 were watershed years for the airline - without radical changes, Alitalia, with its seemingly timeless branding, would disappear for good. By then, the old Alitalia was bankrupt, and on 30 October 2008, a group of investors forming the "Compagnia Aerea Italiana" (CAI) consortium offered €1,000 million to acquire parts of the bankrupt airline, amidst pilots' and flight crew members' opposition to labour agreements.

ALITALIA ON THE RISE

On 19 November 2008, CAI's offer was accepted by the bankruptcy administrator of Alitalia with the permission of the Italian government, at the time major shareholder of the bankrupting airline and on 13 January 2009 the "new" Alitalia re-launched operations. Fast forward to 2012 and much has happened in Alitalia’s world. Although things could hardly be called smooth for the airline since then, and 2010 was certainly an uphill struggle for Alitalia. It was reported that the airline broke even in 2011 despite the difficulties arising from high fuel costs. On the plus side, Alitalia was nominated as Europe’s most punctual airline in 2010 and one of the world’s five most punctual airlines in 2011.

Recent fleet modernisation at Alitalia is also evidence of an airline that is trying to turn its business around. New A330s have been added, new cabins introduced, and more recently, a brand new fleet of E-jets for intra Europe services. That is where this story begins.

ALITALIA COMETH TO LONDON CITY WITH ITS OWN METAL

From the Alitalia website: London, 26 March 2012:

“Today, the first Alitalia flight took off from London City Airport situated in the heart of London’s financial district. The flight marks Alitalia’s debut from City Airport – 2 daily flights operated by the new Embraer E-190 aircraft connecting the city airports of London and Milan”....... and “the link London City – Milan was previously operated by Alitalia with City Jet aircraft in wetlease”.

I do remember seeing flights to Milan from City Airport in the past, but these were operated not by Alitalia, but Air One, and I am not certain the Avro used by Air One came from CityJet! However, press release aside, being a big E-jet fan, it got me thinking about the prospect of flying with AZ for the first time, all those years after looking at the Alitalia 747 in the window 12000 miles away, particularly as flights were being offered out of London City Airport – my nearest of all the London airports.

Playing around with dates, and I am managed to come up with a weekender in Milan which came to £170 return in total. Booking flights on the AZ website was straightforward and simple. Not having any status with the airline meant limited ability to manage the booking – ie no advance seat selection although web check in is provided. Not bad price wise too. I was all set. My only worry was whether I would live to regret flying AZ based on all the negative press they have had over the years. With some trepidation, but also much anticipation, the departure day finally arrived. Here’s the route:

PRE FLIGHT - DEPARTURE TIME CHANGE

Between the time of booking and departure, AZ rescheduled the outbound flight, although the time change was not significant. Were you thinking that AZ wouldn’t have bothered to notify me of the change? Under the old Alitalia, perhaps? Under the new Alitalia? Well, AZ sent me an email well in advance to advise me of the time change, and also I received not one, but two calls from Alitalia reservations in Italy, to advise me of the time change. I was in no doubt what time my flight was now leaving. I just had to make it to the gate at LCY on time (something you would think is a straightforward task for any a.netter).

RETRO CHECK-IN

Alitalia.com says that 24 hours before, you can apparently check in online via the AZ website.... Well that’s technically true, unless you are departing from a handful of random airports. That includes LCY. Sadly, no OLCI is available for flights leaving London City, which I thought was disappointing. Nearly everybody offers OLCI today. Not good enough really.

I thought I would be able to issue my BP at one of the SSKs at LCY, but surprise number 2, there is no AZ SSK at LCY (well not yet), so I had to check in and make a seat request with a human, which brought me back to circa 1991 before any of this website OLCI stuff had even been thought of! There being no queues, I was handed off to a friendly agent (from Swissport) and it felt weird to ask someone “for a window seat on the A side toward the rear of the aircraft”. I was hoping he did not think I was some kind of crazy, or worse still, that I had terrorist inclinations because I was so specific about the request. In contrast, he just laughed and said “Is that where you usually like to sit then?” to which I just replied “oh yes, I like to be in the rear [of the aircraft]”.... Handing be a BP with seat 24A, he wished me a pleasant flight. Very retro experience, not really on par with any other airline I’ve flown on in the past 10 years or so, but pleasant all the same.

Security at LCY on Friday afternoon was relatively quick, thank goodness although there seemed to be a minor altercation between two guys in front of me, one accusing the other of pushing in somewhere in the line?! It’s strange how flying can bring out the worst in some people (and also the best, in some cases). Airside however, was very busy. Despite LCY expanding its airside areas in the past few years, it’s now too small for the volume of passengers passing through the airport. I managed to weave my way through the throngs of business people and the odd family to get a view of proceedings out on the ramp.

Then, it was onto the extended part of the ramp where there were 2 BA EM190s, and the A318, G-EUNB getting prepared for its flight to Shannon and New York JFK.

Before routing back to one of the stools overlooking the main ramp with a cooling beverage. I noticed that LCY had introduced this service – I don’t remember seeing this before. A good idea given that there were way too many people and too few seats at any of the eating and drinking places.



Interestingly, as I was waiting for my flight to arrive, I overheard a couple of final boarding call announcements – the first time I’ve heard these at LCY which has always been a “we don’t do boarding announcements”. A last call would have been VERY helpful thank you very much LCY back in January.... pity you weren’t able to do that then. Not that I am bitter or anything.

These Titan Avros seem to be following me everywhere at the moment. Operating a flight probably on behalf of CityJet (although not confirmed).

Not long after that, out from my left hand side, a sleek green E-jet swooped down and onto the runway. The inbound flight had arrived and on time.

It seems that I was well positioned at my seat to greet the (relatively) new arrival to LCY as the AZ aircraft was due to park right in front of me. Welcome to London on this unusually fine and sunny day. The first decent day we had in a long time weatherwise, and sadly, one of the few so far in the past month!

It was EI-RNA, the first in the series of new E190 jets delivered to AZ and named Parco Nazionale de Vesuvio. I believe all of the EMB190s are named after national parks in Italy. A nice touch, when so many airlines today, don’t name any of their aircraft any more.

As is customary at LCY, the aircraft then made a sharp turn to face out toward the runway - giving me this rather unique perspective. What a great looking aircraft.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), the AZ driver did not manage to make the turn sharp enough and was unable to line up at the appropriate spot, so like a model on the Milanese catwalk, the aircraft taxied back out to the runway, looped around, and made a second attempt, passing right in front of me for the second time.

Turnaround times are relatively short at LCY and it was not long before our gate flashed up on the FIDS. There was also, shock amazing, an actual boarding call, which seemed to put an end to the LCY policy of “we don’t make boarding announcements”. No gate 21 for me today - thankfully it was gate 6A for the flight to Milan.

The gates and holding pens are all downstairs at LCY so I headed down for a BP scan and to await boarding of AZ7053 with my fellow passengers.

The holding pen got quite full, signifying a decent load on this flight. I estimated (but did not feel compelled to count all the passengers like some A.netters love to do!), that there was a load in excess of 80%. They were never designed for an aircraft of the EMB190’s capacity in my view. I don’t think the LCY airport designers ever dreamed that there would be 100 seater aircraft flying out of LCY.

I managed to get to the aircraft and up the steps without being yelled at for taking pictures. You never know what kind of response you are going to get there so I am always quite discreet.

Greeting passengers at the rear door was a young, well dressed FA, who managed to acknowledge everyone as they passed through. I wouldn’t say she was doing cartwheels of joy to see us all, but she wasn’t rude or dismissive and at least she was at the door to greet the passengers - more than I’ve experienced on some airlines recently. Complementing her was one other male FA who was the chief flight attendant. I thought it was interesting that AZ only have 2 FAs on their EMB190s, whereas I recall BA’s EMB190s have 3.

I had a seat neighbour, an Italian businessman, and he was pretty quiet for the whole flight. There were only a handful of empty aisle seats once the doors had been closed, but he chose to stay where he was rather than move (which is what I was hoping he would do) - but it was no problem and there was plenty of room.

I later moved my camera bag into the overhead baggage compartment.

One of the reasons I like the EMB190 so much. Some people say that legroom is tight on these birds, particularly at the back - but there was nothing tight about the legroom on this flight. Felt absolutely fine.

FARE THEE WELL LONDON

The load was pretty good - pretty much all seats were taken with just a few spare. Alitalia’s EMB190s have light grey (faux) leather seats which were comfortable and the cabin looked and smelt clean and fresh. There was one row of business class in the first row but there hardly seemed to be any point with just one row - that row was entirely empty in any case.

With the doors closed, we expected to depart on time. In fact all passengers were onboard nearly 10 minutes before the STD. Safety demonstration was done first in Italian and then in rushed English. The aircraft only had a very short taxi to the runway. I noted that neither crew member completed a seatbelt or cabin check before we took off. A bit lax or just not enough time?

Before setting out, we also had a nice welcome from the Captain who explained our flight time to Linate was expected to be 1 hour 40 mins with good flying conditions enroute and it was 26C in Milan.

We departed from the West - with the usual LCY take off routine of firing up the engines for a bit at the end of the runway before releasing the brakes. Needless to say, take off was very powerful.

There is no IFE on these birds, and hence no moving map. You have to guess where you are.. Lucky that would prove to be easier than I thought. Our path then took us in a south eastern direction over Kent before passing out over the English Channel.

About 40 minutes later, the Captain came on the PA and announced that passengers on the left hand side would have a nice view of Paris. Surely enough, there it was - the French capital sprawled out under a cloudless sky. Probably the best views of Paris from the air I’ve ever had. We were very lucky and I thought it was a nice touch from the cockpit. Many crews no longer point out places of interest down below while enroute.

SERVICE ONBOARD

Service on this flight consisted of free beverages - limited to orange juice or water, although I did see coffee and tea as well. In sum, rather limited choice. Snacks consisted of either a sweet or savoury packet of something - almost similar to what BA would offer in Y on a route of this length in Europe. I opted for the orange juice - blood orange, which wasn’t chilled as much as it could have been but I have to say it was incredibly delicious. I also tried the sweet biscuits. I thought it was a nice touch to explain their origins and give it an Italian “feel”. I liked that. AZ also provided us with a fresh lime scented towelette.

Service was efficient and courteous. By the time the service items had been cleared away, I noticed that we had company outside.

There was still a dusting of snow on the highest peaks, although at this point, we hit a small patch of dense cloud, and our aircraft bounced around for a short time.

Cabin crew, once they had completed their round of cleaning up, were no longer to be seen until we were ready to descend into Milan. The clouds outside then provided me with sufficient distraction until we started our descent. These were some of the most unusual and amazing cloud formations I’ve seen in a while and I was captivated, as were other passengers sitting in the rows in front of me.

The cabin was prepared for our arrival and all that was left was to continue to watch what was going on outside as we sunk closer toward Milan Linate. By now the light was starting to fade a bit because of the build up of clouds in the area.

We would be approaching RW36 this evening. Before this, the cockpit crew provided us with a further update. They were excellent on this flight. Much better than the BA flight crew on my recent flight to Larnaca.

where it was a short taxi to our remote parking stand. On the way, we passed this Windjet aircraft. I like how they have painted the outside of the APU cover orange as well - but just around the tip. Looks a bit weird?

That was the end of my first Alitalia flight. A bus was waiting for passengers and I was actually the last off. Sadly, no time for pics as the bus was ready to go. My only comment here was the bus was barely large enough to accommodate all of the passengers and I literally had to push my way on, or be left behind on the tarmac (which wasn’t actually a bad idea come to think of it..)

Immigration at LIN was very quick and my bag was waiting for me at the carousel when I arrived. I then made my way out to find transportation to the hotel. First impressions of LIN were not good though - it looks like it needs a pretty serious facelift!

On the whole, I was more than happy with my first AZ flight. It was on time, the aircraft was clean and comfortable, the cockpit crew were especially nice, and while the cabin crew could have been friendlier, they were acceptable for a flight of this length. I would certainly fly this route again with AZ if I was going to Milan.

PART TWO - MILANO SNAPSHOTS, REMEMBERING SE-DMA AND RETURN FLIGHT HIGHLIGHTS

My first time in Milan so I ventured out the following day to see what the city had to offer. It was also a lovely day weatherwise, so there was no desire to be stuck inside anywhere. I caught a local bus from LIN (near my hotel) which took me into the centre of Milan in less than 30 minutes.

As well as the Sforza Castle, which used to be the seat and residence of the Duchy of Milan and one of the biggest citadels in Europe.

I really enjoyed my day wandering around Milan, eating gelato, people watching and taking pics. On the Sunday morning, I decided to go and pay my respects at the memorial which was built in a park near to LIN, to the victims of the SAS MD87, SE-DMA which collided with an executive jet at LIN on 8 October 2001. All passengers on the MD87 and the executive jet were killed in what is Italy’s worst airline disaster. From reading about the accident, it’s one that should have never happened. The memorial consists of a forest of 118 beech trees planted in a circle, one for each passenger on the MD87, and a stone sculpture by the Swedish artist Christer Bording which was donated by SAS, called Infinity Pain, which is placed in the centre of the forest.



The memorial was completed in March 2002 so the trees have grown quite a bit now which was good to see.

The location is very peaceful, with the sounds of birds and joggers going by in the park, and the background “noise” of the occasional aircraft departure from nearby Linate. I stayed here for a few minutes to reflect before moving on back to my hotel to gather my belongings and head home.



While at my hotel (the Air Hotel Linate) I also had a chance to do some spotting. Sadly air traffic flow was the same all weekend (perhaps it’s like this all the time) so I only had views of departures. Still, there were a few nice sights from my window, such as this Air One A320 about to make a sharp right hand turn shortly after departure.

And of course, it was great to see this Alitalia MD80 (dedicated to Markus for sure for all the AZ MD80 flights he has done!)

-NA was back in action early in the day. I was filled with confidence that I would not get the same aircraft for the return flight.

HOMEWARD BOUND

Linate Airport landside is in dire need of some kind of refit. What really got me was the low ceilings. I can’t remember the last terminal I flew out of where the ceilings were so low - perhaps the old T2 at LHR a few years back now. Here’s a part of the check in area

There are a couple of lounges at Linate, and my Priority Pass membership allowed me entrance to one of them. The lounge was compact and without any views outside. The selection of snacks was relatively limited but about what you would expect for a lounge of this size. I was welcomed into the lounge by the friendly attendant.

Before heading to my gate to wait for the departure call. The Sunday flight back to LCY, AZ7052, leaves at 1555.



The aircraft was parked at a remote stand which meant a short bus journey. This time however, the bus was less than half full when we pulled away from the terminal. I wondered whether the aircraft was very full. Thankfully, it would transpire that the flight was more than half empty - not good for the AZ bean counters, but great for passengers who could spread out!

I was however, practically horrified to see that we pulled up next to -NA again. I was hopeful that as I had seen -NA depart earlier in the day, it would be off somewhere else. Sadly not, it was back at LIN to take me home. What was more frustrating was that -NB was parked right next to us. Bugger.

My butt had barely reached the seat when the front door was closed as boarding had been completed. That was it. We had about a 25% load onboard which was reflected by the fact that there was nobody sitting from about row 10 all the way to the back. Everyone was onboard 10 mintues before the STD. Looks like another on time departure. While on the ground we had a nice welcome from the cockpit crew, who announced a scheduled flight time of 1 hour 35 minutes.

By the time we got to the end of the runway for take off, we were followed by this BA A320, which had boarded its passengers some 20 minutes before we did, yet we were leaving first and I would get home long before those LHR bound passengers arrived!

We stopped very quickly before backtracking down the runway and onto the ramp to our parking spot.

The ramp was not overly busy although the rush of flights was just starting. Within a few moments of us arriving, a number of aircraft followed.

With a very light load, all passengers were off the aircraft very quickly and thankfully, the queue at the UK Border was short. Before heading into the terminal, I turned around for one last look at EI-RNA, who had carried me safely to Milan and home again. Thank you!

In conclusion, I would definitely fly Alitalia again on this route. Having said that, there are a couple of areas which could be improved, namely, their OLCI offerings from LCY. I don’t consider it acceptable in 2012 that you cannot offer your passengers the ability to check in online or even at a SSK at the airport. Perhaps this will be rectified in due course given that the flight from LCY only started in late March. Even though the load on the return flight was very light, this was not surprising given the day and time of the flight. The return flight to LCY may be re-timed in due course, but from a passenger’s perspective, I had a great flight. The F&B service onboard was light but these days, to get anything complementary is a pleasant surprise. I also think passengers on this route would prefer a wider choice of beverages. Both flights were on time, and the crews did their job. It was especially nice to have good communication from the cockpit. Finally, the EMB190 is a great aircraft for this route and looks fantastic in Alitalia’s colours.

Wish i had been treated to similar views when i came into LCY in March. First off i was on the wrong side and secondly it was dark!

Yes, LIN has its faults but better to have this 'close-in' airport rather than have it closed down or restricted in the number of flights it can handle. When the revamped MXP opened, the plan was to downgrade LIN to serve only domestic routes. Fortunately, the Italian Gov's plan was derailed by AZ's European rivals who got the Gov to change its mind.

Thanks for that. Yes, I recall you've opted for something a little different. I am sure there will be plenty of chance to get to fly out of LCY. It's a unique experience for sure.

Ha! It's the first time I've ever seen this at LCY. I wonder whether the pilots are still getting used to the slightly different ground conditions there. It's not usual for aircraft to have to do such a tight turn and face away from the terminal.

I've been yelled at a few times, but it never stops me. I really cannot see what the problem is, especially as all airports seem to have different tolerances for photography. I always make sure that I am not in the way, or blocking anything or creating any safety issues on the ramp when I take a pic. It's usually on 1 - 2 seconds in any case. The last time I got yelled at was at Tenerife South by the Easyjet ground staff!

That approach is so much fun. Most of the time the approaches are from the other direction -sometimes you get lucky!

That's Canada Water down below. You can indeed walk all the way along the river, although CW is slightly inland. It's changed dramatically in the past 8 years or so since I moved there.

The hotel was billed as 4 star, but I would struggle to give it 3 stars. On the plus side a) it's close to LIN and you can walk from the terminal to the hotel (although if arriving at night, would suggest that the complimentary shuttle service is used - you need to ring the hotel on arrival and they will direct you to the pick up point) b) the staff were friendly and c) the breakfast buffet is quite good. The room was also spacious and clean. On the downside, the air con was not working and they could not seem to fix it and the hotel is located next door to an old warehouse/distribution facility which does not do much for the view from the window. If that's not a problem, then it's an OK place to stay.

Glad you enjoyed - thanks for your comments. True, I very much appreciated LIN's convenience to Milan itself, but it still needs some kind of refit if possible. The ramp area also looks slightly chaotic but I guess they are restricted by space constraints.

Alitalia certainly has a reputation and not necessarily a good one. I never flew the old Alitalia, but have flown the "new" one a couple of times and when compared to other Italian airlines they have provided a good, solid experience. Not that much service (just like you mentioned), but at least it seems to be consistent on all flights and the crews are mostly very nice and friendly.

That E190 looks great, although I don't really understand why they got them - Alitalia Cityliner already has a fleet of ten CRJ-900s inherited from Air One Cityliner so it would've made sense to get more of those to have an unified fleet methinks. But maybe those CRJs aren't that good - at least judging from my experiences from last summer their operational reliability was a bit cack really... And don't get me started on ground handling at NAP, no no...

I used to skip all the other stuff and just cut directly into this section, mainly for the airline stuff  . That is how I first learned about Qantas, Alitalia and other old school airlines... Those times before the Internet, google, Wikipedia etc. made all that information so accessible and easy to find... I sometimes miss them!

At least the one Citiflyer E190 I flew LCY-MAD with last year had only two which is the legal requirement for planes of this size (1 FA per 50 pax). If you have three it usually means one of them is a trainee being groomed.

What a gorgeous day you had for flying! Such lovely views the whole way and then to be treated to those big storm clouds, just perfect. Shame you got the same aircraft on the way back, that load didn’t look too inspiring.

LCY is a great airport, love those ramp views. Glad there were no boarding issues this time

I recommend it. It's nice that they managed to do this - and not long after the accident. Some memorials take years to come to fruition which I imagine makes it only more painful for the friends and relatives who may want to go somewhere to reflect.

Agree, snack was minimal - could be a bit more generous, but my priority was an ontime flight in both directions! thankfully I ate before the flight so I was not too bothered. The juice was delicious though!

It was a perfect day for flying. I think the pilots must have been enjoying it too!. The load on the return flight was indeed small, but I guess it might get better with time, or if the flight was retimed slightly to be later departing from LIN.

My SAS flight from CPH in Feb was actually late ironically but I remember all the signs at CPH telling everyone how punctual they were....

It's the old new colours, which seems to be a requirement for all Skyteam airlines these days! I really like the subtle tweaks they've made and still managed to retain an iconic logo that looks as good today as when it first came out.

What a stunning piece once again my friend! I said it once and I will say it again: you're the King of Flying in Good Weather Conditions. Really amazed by the quality and the views of your pics. Having said that, it's pretty nice to see a resurected Alitalia. My parents flew them last month to FLR via FCO and they were happily surprised as well. Those Jungle Jets look mighty fine in the Alitalia scheme!

Funny, my AZ flight was also rescheduled a couple of minutes and we too got a call and an e-mail that informed us about it. Needless to say, we too were very surprised about it. It seems like AZ has a good system when it comes informing about it (even though "just" an email is perfectly fine by me).

My only experience on an Embraer aircraft is on the BA CityFlyer EMB170, I was seated at the last row and I had no complaints about the legroom, so I can only agree with you on this one.

The check in area is the area where a low ceiling is most easily noticed, I'd say. A high ceiling and natural light makes a huge difference.
