Introduction
Sugeng Rawuh, A.net friends.
Welcome to the fourth part of our journey to the Land Down Under where I will take you along in an emotionally different trip to my hometown Semarang after my godmother Ma Ingrid’s decease last October 31, 2011.
Ma Ingrid would not be there anymore, but I just had go to her house. I wanted to see the place I used to call home for the last time.
Travel arrangement
Can you imagine my excitement when Merpati Nusantara Airlines resumed direct flight from Bandung to Semarang last July 19, 2011? An inconvenient detour via Jakarta like we did two years ago would no longer be necessary. Furthermore, I was captured by nostalgic feeling as my mother used to shuttle between both cities on board of MZ in the early nineties.
But, what to do if MZ booking engine did not accept payment with foreign credit card? Yet, there was nothing to worry about. On this stage, do you believe me that my A.net circle of friends paid off?
On Airbuseric (Eric)’s recommendation, we enlisted the help of certain travel agent.
Our E-tickets were issued the day after our booking was finalized using my Dutch credit card.
Merpati Nusantara Airlines
Look what we got to see upon inserting our booking reference.
Single booking page
Apart from e-mailing or printing your itinerary, there was also one interesting feature to split booking. I did not dare to try though.
MZ’s My Booking might not be elaborate, but I was more than happy with MZ’s implementation of E-ticketing.

I was leaving Bandung again.
Departure signage
As mixed feelings overpowered me, I was somewhat absent while preparing our belongings for pre-security screening.
It occurred to me that I left one full half liter bottle of mineral water inside our luggage as it just disappeared into X-ray machine.
Luckily, the precious sealed bottle of well needed water went through. I did not wait any longer to break the seal and take a gulp of the content.
After handing it over to equally thirsty Herman, I went on consulting our flight status.
FIDS. Yikes, where is our flight?
Our travel agent advises against flying with MZ on her website as this particular airline is notorious for rescheduling flights without prior notice. But, we got no other option as MZ was the only airline flying directly to SRG and we did not fancy the detour via CGK.
Anyway, we proceeded to MZ check-in counters.

Airport check in
Customer Service Agent Ajeng enthusiastically got up as if she was delighted to finally serve a customer.
“Good morning, Sir,” She greeted us with Onjoli Mudra.
“Good morning. We are going to Semarang,” I just acted dumb.
“Certainly. May I see your identity cards?”
Ajeng took our documents and started typing.
“Do you have any luggage to check in?”
“Yes, just one,”
The weighing scale indicated 19.67 kilograms for our single joint suitcase. Compared to two suitcases we had on inbound with a total weight of 41 kilograms, I dared to say that our mission was accomplished!
As Ajeng jabbed away on her keyboard, I browsed around, looking for anything upholding our flight for today.
Destination tag
I could not help getting anxious, waiting for the moment that Ajeng would say, “I am sorry. But, your flight has been cancelled,” or the like.
Instead, Ajeng revealed two slips of paper, “Here are your boarding passes,”
I was somewhat relieved.
My boarding pass
“The waiting room is located on the second floor. Passenger Service Charge will be collected before you go upstairs,”
Ajeng indicated the direction to the departure entrance before returning in her Onjoli Mudra, “Thank you for flying Merpati,”
“Thank you,”

Second security screening was a breeze. Just like the previous one, we did not get separated from our then half empty water bottle.

Once I looked out, I was somewhat glued to the window.

It was love at the first sight!
Boy, how eager I was to get on board of this beautiful Chinese princess. But apparently, I was not the only one.

Boarding
“Merpati to Semarang is ready for boarding now,”
After surrendering the airline copy of our slips, we were admitted to the tarmac.
Walking down
A ramp agent was waiting downstairs with umbrellas due to drizzly weather. I politely refused his offer for one reason.
Nevertheless, I could not help having mixed feelings again while looking back.

Luckily, spotter friendly environment eased my feelings.
On my way to PK-MZI. No one bothered my photo taking
Under the wing you know to follow Markus (FLIEGER67)’s example
“Welcome on board,” Senior Flight Attendant Ida, wearing a nice gold colored stole in commemoration of MZ’s fifty years of service, greeted us at the door with Onjoli Mudra.
Lovely gesture and even more by a sweet “Good Morning” from Flight Attendant Annesa with her Onjoli Mudra. The gold colored stole decorated her as well.
“What is your seat number, Sir?”
“Five C and D,”

Due to the wing position, our overhead lockers were rather smallish for our carryon. Shame on me, I just hid one luggage under 4D which quite rightly could not be ignored by eagle eyed Annesa.
“Shall I put your luggage in the overhead locker? Because you are seated on emergency exit row,” She suggested while opening our overhead locker.
“I did try it. Our luggage would not fit,”
A frown on Annesa’s face as she directed our luggage at the locker, said enough.
“I just put your luggage above row two. Is that alright?”
“No problem,” I replied while wondering why I did not come up with it myself.
Once the door was closed, Annesa returned for safety briefing. First in Indonesian to Mr. 5A and me, then in English to Herman.
“If you have any more question, do not hesitate to contact us. Alternatively, you can consult the safety card,”

Meeting Ida and Annesa
Apparently, our crew members were on duty for twelve hour, flying Jakarta – Bandung – Semarang – Sampit – Semarang – Bandung – Jakarta.
“It is a long day for us. But, we are fine,” Ida said.
I believed Ida. Also when she told me that MA60 was her favorite to work on in comparison to Fokker 27.
With her fifteen years of service, Ida made a right combination with energetic Annesa who just joined MZ for two months. Both were equally friendly and hospitable.
“It was nice talking to you. Thank you,” I excused myself.

Village of Rejosari, just under the engine
I got excited! Our princess followed in tracks of PlaneHunter’s PK-CJI

But soon enough, I realized that our flight was about to come to an end. Fasten seat belt signs were illuminated as our princess slightly banked to the right for approach position along the coastline.

Landing

Brakes were barely necessary for our landing on 2,680 meter runway.
Can you imagine that the runway used to measure 1,650 meters when I attended the elementary school? That memory, more childhood memories with my rather protective mother, memory of Ma Ingrid flashed through my mind as our princess pulled into parking position 2.
Disembarking
“Thank you,”
“Welcome to Semarang,”
Touching farewell of Ida and Annesa in their Onjoli Mudra waved me away as sultry atmosphere embraced me outside.

Memories…
Memories of driving past my hometown’s sights, but never going inside.
Sam Poo Kong
I never realized that Sam Poo Kong or Gedung Batu temple, is the oldest Chinese temple in my hometown.
Established by Chinese Muslim explorer Admiral Zheng He or Sam Poo Tay Djien sometime between 1400 and 1416, the temple is now shared by Indonesians of multiples religious denominations and ethnicities.
Main temple Sam Poo Kong
A landslide caused the original temple to collapse in 1704 including a cave where a statuette of Zheng was installed. The temple was restored in October 1724, while a new cave was made next to the old one.
Too bad, we were not allowed to enter the cave as religious ceremony was being held inside. Otherwise, we could have seen fortune telling equipment, the statuette of Zheng and an altar where a well, said to be capable of healing various ailments, is located underneath.
Anyway, we still enjoyed the outside cave wall, displaying life story relief of Zheng…
Welcome ceremony of Zheng in the harbor by Malacca (now Malaysian) ethnic Bailimisuci
Including his heroic deed.
Extermination of pirate Chen Zhu Yi after learning the pirate’s evildoing during his second voyage in the main route Old Harbor (Palembang)
Apart from the the oldest Sam Poo Kong, the 7.9 acre temple complex in a mixed Chinese and Javanese architecture style also includes…
Tho Thee Kong (or Dewa Bumi temple). Used by those who seek blessings from the earth god Tu Di Gong
Kyai Juru Mudi temple. Frequented by people looking for success in business
With further south Kyai Jangkar temple whose name was derived from a sacred anchor used by Zheng, containing not only the anchor itself, but also…
An altar to those of Zheng's crewmen who died while fulfilling their duties
And last but not least, Kyai Cundrik Bumi temple which is used to worship a weapon used by Zheng. Shame, I did not take any picture of it.
Something on the opposite of Kyai Jangkar temple, was somehow more intriguing.
Pagoda Avalokitesvara
I used to know the shrine as Watugong. Little I knew that it has become the tallest pagoda in Indonesia at 45 meter height after being rebuilt and reopened on July 14, 2006.
Overview
Can you see the statue on the second until the sixth floor? It is the statue of goddess Kwan Im (or Dewi Welas Asih) facing four directions of the wind so that she can shine her love all around her.
Kwan Im statuette on the first floor
Another famous icon is also housed inside.
Buddha Rupang
What an eye opening experience for me to visit both Sam Poo Kong and Pagoda Avalokitesvara.
But yet the memories….
I could not help feeling sad as Pagoda Avalokitesvara happened to be located not far away from Ma Ingrid’s place.
How I wished Kwan Im made me feel the love again out of the darkened house with a fence tag ‘For sale’.
Conclusion
First of all, my gratitude to Herman for being my greatest (travel) companion.
Secondly, my appreciation to Ida and Annesa, for taking good care of Herman and me on board;
and Eric for his recommendation.
Last but not least, my gratitude to all of you for joining us in our further travel to my hometown.
Please feel free to leave comments, suggestions or questions. I am a human being with his own shortcomings and still learning to write.

Good to know; some restrictions in Europe and the USA just do not make any sense. A more laid-back attitude is wonderful!

How nice. I'm sure everyone here would've been glued to that window trying to get the best glances of this rather uncommon aircraft type

Lending umbrellas, what a nice thought

Yes, quite huge legroom here

Hah, just wonderful! It's always good to be home, truly home.

Suryo,
how great to get back memories on my MA60 flight last year. You got the original MZ colours, while I got the new/or special colours. Inside, the interior is identical though. You're welcome and my pleasure to guide you to the travel agency. There is quite some negative press about them, but it worked fine for both of us. Fast service and clear communication as well. Also flights on schedule and no problems with MZ. Safety wise they seemed ok to me, like on your flight, professional enough. Sorry to hear about the out of stock items. Different stock compared to my flights offer, probably this was the new collection haha
It good to know this special trip for you went as planned, and you left with mixed feelings though happy about the paid visit. Keep the memories in your heart.
See you soon again,
Eric

A fantastic report as usual. Especially interesting with an unusual airline along with a very rare type. I don't think I've ever seen a MA60 report here on a.net.

Thanks for nice report on this ‘princess’ of yours Although I wouldn’t call her exactly that since I feel she’s almost as ugly as the Whale Jet. Still, it was nice to see you followed airbuseric’s footsteps and had a nice flight on this exotic aircraft. It seemed like quite an emotional journey for you, going back to the place where your beloved Godmother has spent her last years and days. Cherish those moments my friend and keep them in your heart as a nice memory to what ever was

I still don’t understand why they can’t include all those extra charges in the ticket price.

It was interesting to read about your experiences on the rare type as well - the MA-60. It's definitely different looking from the outside, but the interior seemed to resemble more common types.
And you also have some nice destination photos there.

Sugeng siang, Suryo,
What made this report so special and enjoyable wasn't only that it featured the very rare MA60 but also all the memories and emotions related to the trip. To make a long story short: I applaud you for writing this story in the way you did!
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Can you imagine my excitement when Merpati Nusantara Airlines resumed direct flight from Bandung to Semarang last July 19, 2011? I am sure doing the extra detour is something an A.netter would cope with, but I fully understand why you decided to try the newly born connection.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Apart from e-mailing or printing your itinerary, there was also one interesting feature to split booking. I did not dare to try though.
Previously I have only seen this feature on United. It is quite sad to think two persons travelling together might have an argument, not wanting to be on the same booking reference anymore? I hope such features would not exist, or even further, that they would not be needed..
Quoting akhmad (Reply 1): Luckily, the precious sealed bottle of well needed water went through. I did not wait any longer to break the seal and take a gulp of the content.
The same happened to me multiple times at Dubai Airport last week - by the fourth time it happened I did not believe anymore it was an accident. Perhaps water bottles are not considered to be a threat anymore? (And no, I did not forget the water bottle in my backpack all those times - the last times I left it there to see if it would be noticed...)
Quoting akhmad (Reply 1): After handing it over to equally thirsty Herman, I went on consulting our flight status.
Nice, but I wouldn't exactly say that the plane looks very amazing in that livery...
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Under the wing you know to follow Markus (FLIEGER67)’s example
I am sure this is the first time it is done on the MA60!
Quoting akhmad (Reply 2): ‘Please do not remove from aircraft’
I would not, but could not resist removing…
A familiar feeling, I must say. The best way is to just listen to the screams of the safety card and liberate it. The way I got the Blue1 Boeing 717 in my collection for the first time was however different. After my first ever flight on the type I had no chance of removing it without the crew noticing it so I decided to ask. They could not allow me to take it with me but asked for my address, and indeed, some weeks later I got a brand new 717 safety card in my mailbox along with a nice letter. But I guess that does not work on all airlines.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): A fluffy bun with savory minced meat filling and a slice of spongy, not overly sweet chocolate cake, all washed down with refreshing mineral water. Great stimulation of your taste buds in the late morning hours.
Thank you for taking us with you on this tour! Have you ever thought about becoming a tour guide? I am sure you would have plenty of interesting stories to share.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): I am a human being with his own shortcomings and still learning to write.
Very thoughtful of you to make this remark but I think it is a disclaimer anyone hearing or reading anything produced by any humans should think of. And when it comes to trip reports I am most sure you are already a master. But I guess we can all still learn something.
This report really raised many thoughts in me. Memories are precious.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): On Airbuseric (Eric)’s recommendation, we enlisted the help of certain travel agent.
Eric was so resourceful indeed! Great to hear that the ticketing went smoothly! Furthermore, such tedious ticketing requirements put you as one of the few non-Indonesians to fly with this carrier, such a privilege!
Quoting akhmad (Reply 1): “Good morning. We are going to Semarang,” I just acted dumb.
haha, you play that very well!
Quoting akhmad (Reply 1): Compared to two suitcases we had on inbound with a total weight of 41 kilograms, I dared to say that our mission was accomplished!
I'm most pleased to know you've made alot of friends and family very happy! Bless you and Herman, kind hearted souls!
Quoting akhmad (Reply 1): Second security screening was a breeze. Just like the previous one, we did not get separated from our then half empty water bottle.
I've heard of cats with nine lives but this water bottle seems to possess a fair bit of lives itself: twice missed an early departure into the dustbin.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 2): Senior Flight Attendant Ida, wearing a nice gold colored stole in commemoration of MZ’s fifty years of service, greeted us at the door with Onjoli Mudra.
Does Onjoli Mudra refer to the Indonesian version of the Thai wai? I am really curious!
Quoting akhmad (Reply 2): Row 5 turned out to be an emergency exit row...
You and Herman have always been lucky in the emergency exit row aspects of your lives
Quoting akhmad (Reply 2): Other instructions on front page. Note the eight languages
Let me try to decipher them: Indonesian, English, German, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, French and Spanish! Am I right?
Quoting akhmad (Reply 2): A fluffy bun with savory minced meat filling and a slice of spongy, not overly sweet chocolate cake, all washed down with refreshing mineral water.
mmm.. the bun sounds delicious indeed. Such a nice treat for such a short sector!
Lovely photo of you trio! (What's with the grin on your face :P ) Their uniform looks very distinct from other Indonesian carriers!
Quoting akhmad (Reply 2): Apparently, our crew members were on duty for twelve hour, flying Jakarta – Bandung – Semarang – Sampit – Semarang – Bandung – Jakarta.
Wow, that's a really long day for them indeed! Imagine the number of passengers they see each day (and the number of inflight announcements they have to make)! I may be wrong but some countries do prohibit FAs from flying for such an extended period of time, am I right? I just hope Merpati do remunerate them well.
Wow, thanks so much for showing us the Chinese heritage aspect of Semarang! Really not quite the Indonesia I'd in mind but really nice to know that you have such elegant Chinese heritage buildings in your hometown!

Hi Suryo,
an excellent report about a very special trip for you with a personal and very emotional touch. I can only repeat what others have already written here: Keep and cherish the memories in your heart.
Great to get a flight with the Xian MA60 of Merpati, for sure something special. And also very nice service on board.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): A ramp agent was waiting downstairs with umbrellas due to drizzly weather.
Now that's great service. But you were right, no problem to get a little wet to have a free hand to take the pictures of the plane.
... but I think I couldn't resist either in that case ...
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): “I am so sorry. We have ran out both of them,” Ida was apologetic after digging into her trolley in vain.
Oh, too bad, that would have been a nice souvenir.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Apparently, our crew members were on duty for twelve hour, flying Jakarta – Bandung – Semarang – Sampit – Semarang – Bandung – Jakarta.
That's quite a long day for them, good to see that they are still smiling.

Hi Suryo
Nice continuation of your Asia trip report series.
It looks like you had a good trip, nice to see the free snack box on such a short flight.
Service looks good as well.
Suprised to see the MA60 is so modern
Matur nuwun. Thank you so much for your nice replies.
Alex, Eric, Lars:
Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 4): Oh, no! I almost thought that actually happened, when I looked over the report and saw the word "cancelled". I was relieved upon reading the sentence
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 5): It good to know this special trip for you went as planned
Quoting The777Man (Reply 15): I'm glad there were no delays with the flight.
Thank you for your compassion. It was exactly my feeling about the flight.
Quoting LH4532 (Reply 14): Thank you for writing this TR.
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): Thank you for taking us with you on this tour!
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 18): Thanks for sharing this lovely report on this very rare aircraft and certainly one of the rare occasions where you are not on an Airbus or a Boeing :p To add the cherry on top of the cake, its a flight to your hometown, a real treat indeed!
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 18): Wow, thanks so much for showing us the Chinese heritage aspect of Semarang!
It has been a great pleasure for me to share it with all of you.
Alex, Nils:
Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 4): May I ask why the fee needs to be paid in cash and is not added to the price of the ticket? The latter seems easier to handle!
Quoting sultanils (Reply 8): I still don’t understand why they can’t include all those extra charges in the ticket price.
I do not know either why my home country still collects the fees this way.
Alex, signol, Markus, 717Flyer:
Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 4): The MA-60, the emotional charge of the journey and your unmistakable style make it very special.
Quoting signol (Reply 10): Suryo, please don't be so modest! You are one of the most accomplished writers on this site
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 12): You´re for sure on the right way Suryo, I like you´re style, you know.
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): And when it comes to trip reports I am most sure you are already a master.
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): The same happened to me multiple times at Dubai Airport last week - by the fourth time it happened I did not believe anymore it was an accident. Perhaps water bottles are not considered to be a threat anymore? (And no, I did not forget the water bottle in my backpack all those times - the last times I left it there to see if it would be noticed...)
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 18): I've heard of cats with nine lives but this water bottle seems to possess a fair bit of lives itself: twice missed an early departure into the dustbin.
Do you not just long for good old days of flying when unlimited amount of liquids were allowed everywhere?
Alex, Gavin:
Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 4): Always nice to manage to get a nice seat with huge legroom. Perhaps it's even better, when it's a surprise!
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 18): You and Herman have always been lucky in the emergency exit row aspects of your lives
Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 11): Blimey, what a great report. This series of yours is becoming more and more exotic as you go along. Both in terms of destination and type of aircraft.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 12): really well done. How I like it to follow you´re stories around Indonesia.
Quoting burj (Reply 13): As always I love your trip reports, especially all the great photos and the attention to detail so that we can feel like we were on the trip with you and Herman!
Quoting LH4532 (Reply 14): It sure is very nice to see that another part of your TR series is finally online.
Quoting dkdaviator (Reply 16): It was interesting to read about your experiences on the rare type as well
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): What made this report so special and enjoyable wasn't only that it featured the very rare MA60 but also all the memories and emotions related to the trip. To make a long story short: I applaud you for writing this story in the way you did!
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): Well, with your commentary as guidance and such an intriguing choice of airline and aircraft type you can be sure I will!
Quoting CaptainRed (Reply 20): an excellent report about a very special trip for you with a personal and very emotional touch.
Quoting MSS658 (Reply 21): Nice continuation of your Asia trip report series.
Thank you for your kind words and supports.
Eric, Nils, signol, 717Flyer, Gavin, CaptainRed:
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 5): and you left with mixed feelings though happy about the paid visit. Keep the memories in your heart.
Quoting sultanils (Reply 8): It seemed like quite an emotional journey for you, going back to the place where your beloved Godmother has spent her last years and days. Cherish those moments my friend and keep them in your heart as a nice memory to what ever was
Quoting signol (Reply 10): I know your feeling, from whenever I pass by my late father's place.
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): Very thoughtful of you to make this remark but I think it is a disclaimer anyone hearing or reading anything produced by any humans should think of.
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): This report really raised many thoughts in me. Memories are precious.
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 18): I am sorry to hear that. I am sure that she would be proud of such a kind-hearted godson that you are.
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 18): I'm most pleased to know you've made alot of friends and family very happy! Bless you and Herman, kind hearted souls!
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 18): Its just a sad part of life that nothing is forever... How are we ever going to treasure it otherwise?
Time waits for no man but memories are forever...
Quoting CaptainRed (Reply 20): I can only repeat what others have already written here: Keep and cherish the memories in your heart.
Your words are so sweet and touching. I am just blessed with all of you.
Eric, CaptainRed:
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 5): Sorry to hear about the out of stock items.
Quoting CaptainRed (Reply 20): Oh, too bad, that would have been a nice souvenir.
I wish MZ had sufficient amount of caps and T-shirts on board.
Philip, signol, William, Lars:
Quoting OA260 (Reply 6): Anyway can't wait to the next report
Quoting signol (Reply 10): and as always eagerly awaiting the next!
Quoting sultanils (Reply 8): Still, it was nice to see you followed airbuseric’s footsteps and had a nice flight on this exotic aircraft.
Quoting The777Man (Reply 15): Nice to log the rare MA-60 and very nice to also fly nonstop!
Quoting dkdaviator (Reply 16): It is good you were able to use a "connection" from a.net (Airbuseric) to find a travel agent to help with your booking issues!
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 18): Eric was so resourceful indeed! Great to hear that the ticketing went smoothly! Furthermore, such tedious ticketing requirements put you as one of the few non-Indonesians to fly with this carrier, such a privilege!
Quoting CaptainRed (Reply 20): Great to get a flight with the Xian MA60 of Merpati, for sure something special.
Absolutely. Thanks to Eric’s inspiration.
Nils, 717Flyer, CaptainRed:
Quoting sultanils (Reply 8): I hope it does decorate your living room wall now!
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): A familiar feeling, I must say. The best way is to just listen to the screams of the safety card and liberate it.
Quoting CaptainRed (Reply 20): ... but I think I couldn't resist either in that case ...
Still, I only liberated the in-flight magazine at the end.
Gabriel, William, Gavin, CaptainRed:
Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 9): Phew, sounds like an exhausting day for them...I hope the flight deck crew spend the night half way....
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 18): Wow, that's a really long day for them indeed! Imagine the number of passengers they see each day (and the number of inflight announcements they have to make)! I may be wrong but some countries do prohibit FAs from flying for such an extended period of time, am I right? I just hope Merpati do remunerate them well.
Quoting The777Man (Reply 15): Pictures from Semarang are great! Looks like a great place to visit although must be very sentimental for you.
Quoting dkdaviator (Reply 16): And you also have some nice destination photos there.
Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 18): Really not quite the Indonesia I'd in mind but really nice to know that you have such elegant Chinese heritage buildings in your hometown!
That is indeed my Semarang with its sentimental value for me.
William, Lars, David, Marc:
Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 11): The cabin looks nice though, no real difference to Western types. So what was your over all impression of the aircraft?
Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 4): I'm sure everyone here would've been glued to that window trying to get the best glances of this rather uncommon aircraft type
At least, there was one person glued to the window.
Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 4): A nice snack for a pretty short flight. The equivalent of a sandwich and dessert is almost unheard of in Europe on such a short flight
True. But on the other hand, you get a choice of (alcoholic) drinks in Europe.
Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 4): Hah, just wonderful! It's always good to be home, truly home.
You must feel the same way every time you disembark in Romania.
Eric:
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 5): how great to get back memories on my MA60 flight last year. You got the original MZ colours, while I got the new/or special colours. Inside, the interior is identical though.
I remember your MA60 report. It was like MZ wanted to have its MA60’s portrayed by us both in regular and special color on A.net.
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 5): You're welcome and my pleasure to guide you to the travel agency.
You are the best!
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 5): There is quite some negative press about them, but it worked fine for both of us. Fast service and clear communication as well.
Hopefully, we would be able to rectify the unfairly negative publicity about them this way.
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 5): Safety wise they seemed ok to me, like on your flight, professional enough.
I was impressed by Annesa who insisted on keeping emergency exit row free from any luggage and did safety briefing in both Indonesian and English.
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 5): Different stock compared to my flights offer, probably this was the new collection haha
Quoting signol (Reply 10): That is good, staff's attitudes can vary so much from place to place.
Absolutely. I dare to say that I never had a problem with photography at any Indonesian airport.
Quoting signol (Reply 10): Lol I'm not so sure, the nose is a little large for my taste, with the eyes a little high up. I prefer the Dash 8 or ATR
I am fine with that.
Quoting signol (Reply 10): A shame. Can you email the company, perhaps you can buy one remotely?
A good idea. If I fly MZ next time, I will email MZ beforehand.
Quoting signol (Reply 10): I suppose I am fortunate to live in my hometown.
I am happy for you.
William:
Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 11): To be honest, I'd never heard of the Xian aircraft company before.
Me neither until Merpati ordered MA60’s.
Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 11): The best part about your reports is always how you manage to engage in conversation with the crew, Suryo. It's such a nice gesture, an expression of your appreciation of their effort and service.
Quoting burj (Reply 13): So did you make him carries the bags while you were taking photos?!
Sweet Herman offered to carry the bags so that I could take photos.
Quoting burj (Reply 13): On a serious note....they let Herman sit in the emergency row even though he didn't speak the local language? I guess English is good enough?
Sure!
Daniel:
Quoting LH4532 (Reply 14): Australia is getting nearer and nearer.
Quoting LH4532 (Reply 14): That really is a very light suitcase for both of you.
We are used to travel light.
Quoting LH4532 (Reply 14): That would have been enough for me to eat.
Then, you would love flying with Merpati.
Sugeng siang717Flyer:
First of all, allow me to honor you with your impressive greeting.
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): I am sure doing the extra detour is something an A.netter would cope with, but I fully understand why you decided to try the newly born connection.
You are such a dear, 717Flyer.
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): Previously I have only seen this feature on United. It is quite sad to think two persons travelling together might have an argument, not wanting to be on the same booking reference anymore? I hope such features would not exist, or even further, that they would not be needed..
I never thought that way. These features should have to be disabled at all times.
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): It really is more a receipt than a boarding pass, but at least it is something to keep for your collection.
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): Nice, but I wouldn't exactly say that the plane looks very amazing in that livery...
That is fair.
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): I am sure this is the first time it is done on the MA60!
You may be right.
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 17): The way I got the Blue1 Boeing 717 in my collection for the first time was however different.
I really like the fact that they're quite relax when it comes to taking pictures of planes when on the tarmac. I love doing that too whenever that's possible so I do know how you felt.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 1): A fluffy bun with savory minced meat filling and a slice of spongy, not overly sweet chocolate cake, all washed down with refreshing mineral water. Great stimulation of your taste buds in the late morning hours.
That looks delicious and enough to temporarily fill your hungry stomach.

Hi Suryo,
Thank you for the next installment of the series with this exotic flight on Merpati. What a shame that you were not able to purchase the t-shirt and cap on board. Not many airlines offer such good souvenirs.
I still find it hard to believe that we lost someone so dear on the same day.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Instead, Ajeng revealed two slips of paper, “Here are your boarding passes,”
I was somewhat relieved.
Considering how special the flight was, they're not very special boarding passes, are they?

Hi Suryo,
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Welcome to the fourth part of our journey to the Land Down Under where I will take you along in an emotionally different trip to my hometown Semarang after my godmother Ma Ingrid’s decease last October 31, 2011.
Thanks for sharing this personal trip with us. Her loss must have truly been felt while you were there.
Merpati does have some smart and gorgeous looking FA's. Though their unifroms seem more blue on the cover of the magazine, rather than the darker colours as seen of the FA's on this flight.

Hello Suryo!
Nice trip report, which I read with considerable delay. It's very complete, I guess that ticks every single box on the "to see" list of an a.nutter, but it's also very enjoyable to read as well!
I must admit I've never heard of this MA-60 prop aircraft, at the very beginning I thought it might've been some kind of motorway! It is an interesting plane to say the least, looks like the builder started manufacturing it as an Antonov 26, ran out of kit and then simply cannibalized parts of an ATR. Looks like a nice addition to have on anyone's logbook, though!

Excellent TR!
It brings a special type of excitement when a TR includes some niche routes and airports like the above. The experience in itself is joyous more than the inflight service.
Thanks for sharing.

Antonov 26 was actually the Russian ancestor of MA-60. It is a stretched version of the Chinese Xian Y7-200A, which was produced based on Antonov 26.

That is for sure.

Hey Léo,
How nice to see you back!
Quoting eastafspot (Reply 46): Flying a blacklisted airline must be really challenging!
We were left no other choice. We could have traveled overland to Jakarta to get on board of a non-blacklisted airline, but that journey would have been challenging as well.
Quoting eastafspot (Reply 46): Does the ban of this airline concern all its fleet?
Unfortunately yes.
Quoting eastafspot (Reply 46): what are the chances they disappear soon from this list?
I wish I knew. All air carriers certified by the authority with responsibility for regulatory oversight of Indonesia are subject to a ban within The EU with some exception.
Quoting eastafspot (Reply 46): It is encouraging, despite it has bigger fish to fry...
Hopefully, Burundi will flourish more than ever after its entry to East African Federation.

Is Garuda included in there?
Fly with Air Burundi, Air Tanzania, Air Uganda, Kenya Airways and Rwandair...Jumuiya ya Afrika mashariki
Exhausting. You will have to hop on a shuttle van for a three and a half hour ride to CGK. Still better though than our experience in 2004 when we were seven hour on the way.
