Hello and welcome to my latest report . It was early May that Aer Lingus offered myself and another Anetter a free status match to the Aer Lingus Gold Circle Club. Aer Lingus kindly offered us their top tier Elite status and not long after the match we had our cards and tags delivered to us . Aer Lingus must have then seen an opportunity as shortly after they emailed current Gold Circle members and started to advertise the fact that they were matching former BMI Golds. Posters appeared at Dublin Airport and a website was set up .

For many years in the 90's I used to be top tier with Aer Lingus and back then they were a Oneworld member. I used to fly EI and their partners all the time . Then Aer Lingus left Oneworld and went down the LCC route. The Gold Circle club became very lame and I decided to switch to BMI and Star Alliance. Fast forward a decade and Aer Lingus seems to be finding their way again and starting to enhance their Gold Circle club again . New lounges and ability to choose Gold Circle points earning fares have all been a welcome change.

I never thought that I would be Gold Circle Elite again or even be interested in it but this offer from Aer Lingus was a welcome change in policy and made me think twice.

So time to book flights and of course this time the choice would be Aer Lingus   It was my Mothers 60th Birthday and so I had to be there . I decided to book Aer Lingus DUB-LGW. The weekend also clashed with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations but I was quite looking forward to being in London for that . I decided to take the first early morning flight into LGW despite working til midnight the day before . I would be tired but what can you do .

The Friday night at work went quicklty enough and when I left at midnight it was time to head home to take a quick shower and then head back out to get the 2am bus to Dublin Airport from Newry .

SMS from Aer Lingus :

The bus was quite full with people all heading on holidays . The journey was only one hour so by 3am I arrived into Dublin Airport.

Shortly after I checked in , the Gold Circle desk was not open so just checked in at the standard check in desk.
I put my bag on the scales and the agent asked me where I was going to . I said London . He said ''Heathrow'' I said yes. Then he looked and said I cant find you on the Heathrow . I then said oh sorry its Gatwick   I appologised and said that I had been up all night to which he smiled and said ''no problem''. He gave me my Boarding pass and advised me the Gold Circle lounge would be open at 0515am.

To kill time I decided I would have a very early breakfast at McDonalds   So I made my way to T1 .

I was welcomed in as the first guest of that day and the lounge agent looked at the boarding pass and asked me if I was ok with the allocated seat. I was offered a seat at the front but I declined thanking her for her gesture. I was quite impressed by that .

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-644.jpg

The flight went so fast and soon we were landing into LGW .

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-1145.jpg

So we pulled up to the gate and it was time to disembark thanking the crew .

I made my way to the baggage reclaim and soon my bag came off.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-1667.jpg

I then made my way to the Gatwick Airport train station where I took at train to Clapham Junction. I then had to change and get the train to my Mums .

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-251.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-1750.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-1492.jpg

I arrived shortly after and then met up with my Mum and we decided to go out shopping and to eat.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-482.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-1664.jpg

Getting into the Jubilee spirit :

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-368.jpg

So time to eat and of course where else   I love it when we go there we get such a nice welcome from the manager and staff . They are always asking these days ''just landed from Ireland ?''  http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-890.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-502.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-688.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-2264.jpg

So after a lovely meal as usual we decided to hit the shops .

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-2058.jpg

Epsom was decorated nicely and lots of Jubilee sales and stalls . It was nice to see everyone making the effort.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-1143.jpg

Local pub :

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-878.jpg

Old bus :

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-1061.jpg

So that evening it was time for me to pack my suitcase with the shopping from M&S and get ready for my next flight to warmer climates  http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-1601.jpg

We then got some take away chinese :

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/A3JUNE/file-1493.jpg

I was very tired by that stage having been up with no sleep at all so I said goodnight to my Mum and went to bed. My Mum thanked me for the joint gift that my Sister and I got her which was a Diamond watch . Well it was a special birthday so we wanted to get something very special for a wonderful Mum

So thats the end of this report . My next report will be my onward travels from Heathrow including a very nervous journey to the Airport .

Aer Lingus did what they do best and provided a great service and decent BOB product. The Gold Circle Elite card will come in useful and I aim to maintain Gold Circle status . This Winter Im taking a break from work and going travelling so will do lots of flights with Aer Lingus as well as Star Alliance so its all good

Thanks for reading the report and I look forward to and appreciate your comments as usual.

Best wishes

OA260 / Philip

Ah, so this is where you were when we were all in Berlin
I know what you mean about the McDo meal. A guilty pleasure from time to time!
Nice gesture for EI to match, looks like they may get some more business from you as a result.

And a nice gift for your mum - though I'm sure your visit means more to her.

Thanks!

Yes they do indeed and its great to see a bit of the old Aer Lingus shining through again . Do you really like that stuff ? They rave about it at work but Im a Nespresso freak and love intense 10 strength and this just didnt do it for me . Maybe Im too fussy but Id love them to do something stronger and richer .

BTW do you have the link to your Youtube videos and are they in HD ? I got a new Apple TV and want to watch some of them on my TV .

Indeed sometimes you just need that . Some people turn their nose up at McDonalds and then go eat something worse but because its served in a sit down restaurant its suddenly ok LOL...

Indeed EI will get more business from me . As I said Im taking the Winter off and will explore their network once more

Hi Philip
As always an excellent TR, interesting to see T2 so quiet. Seeing those pics of the EI GC lounge as me more excited about my upcoming trip. Look forward to reading the next report

Hey Mark thanks for the reply. Yes good things for you to look forward to on your trip (s)
Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 14):
Very nice report Phil....only your reports are complete with a retro EI A320 and some food pictures at Jimmy Spices!

Hi Gabriel thanks for stopping by . Indeed wouldnt be mine without it LOL

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 14):
Thanks you SO much for drawing this to my attention...I've sent of my application, shortly hoping to be matched....looks like my next trip to Ireland might be on EI for the first time in many years, and I'll be able to have a drink in the lounge before hand...so long Ryanair!

Arr thats great glad you can get something out of it too . Its a nice wee card to have . It will certainly be nice for you to make a trip and try EI and the lounges again . You should get your card in 10-14 days so quite quick. Your status online will update on the 1st July . They do a sweep every month .

Not for me I like the HP brown sauce on my fry .

Hello Philip,

I suspected you might be taken away with the celebrations of the Jubilee. Congratulations, I was looking on in envy from Saudi Arabia.

Lots of nice food photos - you know how we like those.

The lounge has a very nice feel to it indeed, but perhaps some of the F&B offerings were a little 'packaged'. I like the use of materials in the design and it gives it a nice identity.

Breakfast looked cracking too!

So, don't you normally take the X26!? Clapham Jctn is a good compensation, it is one of the busiest railways stations in the world I think!

I was welcomed in as the first guest of that day and the lounge agent looked at the boarding pass and asked me if I was ok with the allocated seat. I was offered a seat at the front but I declined thanking her for her gesture. I was quite impressed by that

The staff in the lounge are extremely good like this.

Twice I have arrived early enough to get out on an earlier flight (from DUB to LHR) and they have offered to change me over and I accepted. It is good that this is not advertised as I think it's a great thing to be offered. Of course, you have to be hand baggage only, but I usually am, so...

Nice report - especially liked the photo of the card and the bag tags - both of which I hadn't seen before! (Still waiting for my Green Card to arrive as it were   )

I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

Yes well I guess its standard offerings but later in the day they offer sandwiches so not too bad.

When I flt to LHR thats the bus I get but when I go to LGW its the train . Yes it was very busy as the Epsom races were on too . Everyone dressed up .

Hi, Phil,

what a great set of pictures from DUB airport. I´ve never been there since a long time, but should change that definitely.
Beside that, a well done story, good work.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):

Aer Lingus did what they do best and provided a great service and decent BOB product. The Gold Circle Elite card will come in useful and I aim to maintain Gold Circle status . This Winter Im taking a break from work and going travelling so will do lots of flights with Aer Lingus as well as Star Alliance so its all good

Hey, looking forward for more new stories form you´re hand.

Greetings,

Hello Philip,

Nice picturesque report on the good’ole Aer Lingus. I see you did not abandon your old love   I originally thought Aer Lingus would be going more or less the Ryanair way, but it’s good to see they still make a difference.

I think the offer on the status match was welcome to you since you’re a pretty frequent flyer ex-DUB.

Well sometimes you just have to have some junk food

Hi Philip,

Good to read this nice TR

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
I never thought that I would be Gold Circle Elite again or even be interested in it but this offer from Aer Lingus was a welcome change in policy and made me think twice.

Hehe, well, never say never, I guess!

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
I decided to take the first early morning flight into LGW despite working til midnight the day before . I would be tired but what can you do .

Yeah, happens to me too when I have a 6 am flight, usually fall asleep very late anyway and sometimes I just do not go to sleep as 3 hours would just make me more confused.

Good to see some very nice pictures from DUB--very empty in the middle of the night. Nice to see some pics from your destination as well; hope you enjoyed your time with your Mum

Looking forward to your next report!

Alex

Hola Philip!

Great Report, I think one gets used to every A.netter's own style and yours performs on the top list for the quality of the pictures and the attention to detail... well done!

I think Aer Lingus did a great job offering status match to clients like you and if they ever read your report they will be more than happy to see how nicely some of their customers talk about them

The new terminal at BUD looks wonderful at night... it is a really beautiful building, thanks for the pictures at that time of the night I think we would not be able to see too many.

The Gold Circle Lounge seems very nicely furnished and well stuffed for customers and the views on the apron make it a great place to spend some time... I would not personally mind.

Hey Nils

Yes I will always choose EI if the price and route suits . They often have better flight times for a day trip Ex Ireland or a weekend with a late return .

As for the food . Everything is balanced so still keeping focused   Breakfast €7.50 IIRC not a bad price.
