Delta's 757-300, FLL-ATL, 22MAY12

Time for another trip report. This time we'll go back in time for a short report. I wanted to first get the transatlantic journey out of the way, but now back to the journey back from the Bahamas, started here:
Bahamasair's 737-200, UP205, 21MAY12 (by dc9northwest May 24 2012 in Trip Reports)

The itinerary of these particular segments is as follows:
DL1589, FLL-ATL, 753 (N595NW)
DL1512, ATL-ORD, M90 (N907DA)

As I was hunting for an appropriate itinerary to get me back from Florida after my Bahamasair 737-200 experience, I saw a lot of 757s, which is a good thing for me, as they're my favorite of all aircraft with a 3-3 seating configuration. However, looking more closely, I saw that 2 or 3 flights each day from FLL are operated with the 757-300, an aircraft type operated by very few airlines around the globe. Sold! For 117$ I was able to purchase a ticket from FLL to Chicago, which seems like a decent deal on a one-way ticket.

I'd gotten to Fort Lauderdale about 2 and a half hours late, which meant there was little time to explore FLL at night, after getting to by motel by the seaside. I found the room key in the motel's mailbox since I arrived way after the motel's office closed. Just a couple of blocks from the seaside—hey that's not bad at all, and I know where I would go in the morning to try and catch the sunrise!

Anyway, I woke up at half-past five and wandered out on the streets and went to the seaside... Well, no luck there, as there were thunderstorms over the sea, so the sunrise is a no go. I walked around for an hour or so by the beach. Well, it wasn't anything special, and the beach looked much less interesting than Junkanoo Beach in Nassau!

Anyway, I'm attaching a few pictures of FLL to get everything started:

At 8 am, the driver arrived to pick me up in front of my hotel. Apparently he wasn't very pleased I didn't pick up my phone. Well, how should I have known, it wasn't a FLL number, and in Chicago no one calls ahead of time, for the same service. Plus, being that the tip is included, he has no reason not to get upset, eh?

Anyway, the drive to FLL was very quick and soon I was in Terminal 2 of this airport. I quickly printed my boarding passes from the check-in kiosk and proceeded towards security. Still, the design of FLL threw me off. I had no idea where to go for a few seconds until I figured out that the security was hidden from view by the check-in counters. Strange, strange design if you ask me. Anyway, on my way to security I ran into a middle-aged lady who seemed tired, moving very slowly and muttering something under her breath... Then I heard what she was saying, on repeat: “I'm. Never. Flying. Delta. AGAIN!”. Now, I have no idea what happened, but she seemed broken. I'm not saying Delta is an exceptional airline, but I'm not sure what could cause such a reaction in someone..? I guess she had to spend an overnight in ATL or something. Wonder what she would have done living before air travel took off on this scale..?

Anyway, security was quick as there was no one in line...

The terminal is shaped in a strange manner, a sort of U shape, without any through access at the top, which means there can be bottleneck at the bottom of the U. That said, there are 9 gates, so it's not exactly ATL or ORD.

Well, there was a failure in the Tallahassee weather radar, which meant most if not all flights from FLL were delayed that day... Oh well, too bad... More waiting for me. I had enough time in ATL so my onward flight would not be affected by the roughly 1 hour delay announced (I call this the Bahamasair effect--after you fly on Bahamasair, your next couple of flights will also be delayed). That said, other people didn't look so happy; as the STD came and passed, people started slowly congregating in front of the gate. As the new time of boarding came and passed, 10 minutes later,, this continued. Anyway, soon, it was actually time to board, and half the people were standing aimlessly in front of the gate, almost blocking everyone's access. I held back until SkyPriority boarding was called, and just then entered the battlefield, navigating the traffic jam quite successfully. Soon, I was at the gate and entered the jetway.

Flight DL1589
Aircraft: B757-300
Reg: N595NW
STD-STA: 11:30-13:23
ATD-ATA: 12:08-13:47
Seat: 18F
272nd flight
1st flight on a 757-300

Obligatory legroom shot: not bad, but not that good either (for others, at least--I'm very short).

Air Canada A321:

Old Douglas DC-3:

Bahamasair aircraft:

View of T1 and preparations for the extension of runway 9R/27L:

Anyway, we departed just over 30 minutes late, which is not too bad considering that generally it takes a long time to board a 753... I was seated in the Economy Comfort zone, which gave good legroom and seating towards the front of the cabin—useful when you're connecting.

We headed towards runway 9L and took off without a large delay. Then we overflew the Atlantic for a bit before doing a 180 degree turn and going back over land. On our right there was a huge thunderstorm which we avoided by flying further inland and then doing a 90 degree turn to the north.

Well, there are some missing pictures again (not sure where they went), particularly those of the meal service, but I will described it for you. A plastic glass filled with apple juice, accompanied subtly by a couple of Biscoff cinnamonny cookies. That's it, of course, being a domestic segment. As you can see below, the 753 had drop-down screens providing IFE. What did DL show on this short segment? The Big Bang Theory. I didn't watch it, considering the view outside was much more interesting.

After about 1h20' flying time we started our descent into ATL. In 20 minutes, I would experience my first landing on ATL's new runway they built somewhere on the Georgia-Florida border   Actually, it wasn't that bad, and the taxi in wasn't longer than some I experienced in a place like CDG, for instance. On our way there, I saw this wonderful AF 777-300ER which I'm sure made some of the passengers say “I will. Never. Fly. AirFrance. Again” due to its reputedly uncomfortable configuration

Soon we were at the gate and ready to disembark... I looked at where to go for my next flight... and guess what, there was another delay. See, the Bahamasair effect—it's a real thing.

Here are some pics taken at the gate where I was waiting for the MD-90 that would take me to Chicago:

I will add some pictures taken in the new concourse F a few days earlier, on the outbound journey. It reminded me a bit of OTP, at least in some areas.

These seats look remarkably uncomfortable:

Ryanair's new TATL route Leipzig-Atlanta:

Flight DL1512
Aircraft: MD-90
Reg: N907DA
STD-STA: 15:05-16:25
ATD-ATA: 16:38-17:22
Seat: 26A
273rd flight
6th flight on a MD-90

Here is my lovely MD-90 coming in, N907DA:

After boarding:

Infinite legroom seat:

Carry-on deposit:

I don't really have much to say regarding the MD-90 segment, because, well, frankly I fell asleep soon after boarding, waking for a little bit upon take-off and then soon after we were airborne... Waking up only about 15 minutes before landing.

As you can see, the flight got into ORD about an hour late, which isn't that great. The route we took was over Birmingham, AL and St. Louis, MO, before arriving in Chicago out of the west, landing on runway 9R, IIRC. I was still quite asleep at that point.

Thanks for reading, everyone, and I hope you enjoyed the 757-300 voyage. It's a boring, short, domestic segment, but I hope the rare aircraft type makes it worthwhile

Hi Alex !

Nice report !

Great to try to not so common aircraft types in one day.

Legroom looks great even on the 753 but like you said you are short. I love those exit rows with no seat in front!

Looking forward to your next report!

Need a Boeing 777 Firing Order....Further to fly....CI, MU, LX and LH 777s

Thanks!

Hi L./The777Man,

Thanks for reading!

Yes, well, there's certainly a bit more legroom in the Economy Comfort zone, it's ok, on par with other Economy Premium products, I suppose.

Yeah, those are some of my favorite seats--only the MD-90 features those on aircraft I fly reasonably often, it seems.

The 753 seemed in better conditions than some other A/C in Delta's fleet, like the MD-88, for instance.

Thanks, next one will be a while--from my Norway trip in July--unless I decide I have enough material from one of my previous journeys

Again, thanks for reading and commenting!

Hi Air380,

I think that's supposed to be Ryan International Airlines, not the Ryanair in Europe--someone probably entered the wrong code! Not sure of how often, sorry

Thanks for reading, hope this solves the dilemma!

Hey, A.,

that´s for sure a good one to follow. Also nice pictures.
I´ve done the very same route on the very same plane type also earlier in the year.
Really interesting for me.

Good to see all that, at least from an European point of view interesting aircraft types.

Hey Alex sometimes the shortest and Domestic trip reports can be very enjoyable and this was no exception. I really enjoyed it.

Did you like Fort Lauderdale of what you saw of it ? I didn't really rate it that much and prefer Miami.

Anyway looking forward to another report soon

Hi Markus,

Thanks for reading and leaving some comments!

I am also interested in seeing routes and aircraft I've flown showing up in reports. Good to know you caught the 753 as well!

Yes, there are not many of those aircraft in Europe indeed!

Hi Philip,

Good to hear from you!

Fort Lauderdale was OK in my eyes, better than the average US city, so to speak, but still nothing spectacular or must-see. Actually I've never been to Miami or Miami Beach so I can't compare. It seemed a bit like Anytown USA+Ocean. One thing I wouldn't do--go there for the beach alone. Nassau's was so much nicer/better IMO.

Thanks for reading and leaving a comment!

Nice report Alex! The 753 is a really nice plane, experienced it over 10 times (always on TF-FIX, the sole -300 of FI).

DL look nice enough, I was supposed to fly them down to Florida in October to finally log them off my list of to-fly airlines but no, that wasn't to be, so now I'm booked on my 21st B6 flight instead.

cheers, Sveinn

Really nice photos - I love the larger format!

I look forward to checking out ATL's F concourse next time I pass through the airport - Air Transat to Macon? Surely they are not a code-share on a flight to Macon, GA? This is bizarre ...

Nice report! I flew the same flight almost exactly a year ago, on June 26th. Originally scheduled for a 757-200 but a last minute equipment sub turned into a MD-90. Hi Sveinn!

From a service standpoint, I suppose I have to hand it to B6--they have it down better than DL. That said, I'm still a loyal DL flyer and their fleet is very diverse so it's harder to get bored.

Icelandair has a nice narrowbody fleet in my view--love 757s!

Hi Matthew!

Thanks for reading!

I have no idea what's up with Air Transat to Macon either! Surely someone entered some info wrong, but I can't see what--the codes aren't similar to those of Georgia Skies and the name--obviously not. Hmmm....

Hi Robert!

Cool to know--I only remember one "at-the-gate" equipment swap by DL, from a MD-88 to a 738 I think, but yeah, there was some chaos, for sure.

Hello Alex,

Nice short report.
Congrats on scoring the 753, in Europe that will be even more difficul than in the US of A I think. Also the MD-90 is a nice addition to the log. I especially liked the pics on climbout of FLL into the Big Blue

Well, of course, it's not only AF that added some more seats to the cabin, hehe. AZ and KL also have some 3-4-3 777s. I tend to subconsciously avoid 777s lately--just realized that aside from my latest KL flight last December, I hadn't flown one in eight years IIRC...

Hi Marc!

Thanks for reading!

Yeah, it's ridiculous to have to clear security and recheck bags even when your final destination is ATL. Hopefully the new building solves this problem once and for all!
