Hi Guys,

Here's to my first trip report on A.net. I've been reading a lot here and I've been enjoying them so I thought I would share my EVA Air experience...

Before we start I'd like to say that this is going to be a boring trip report without pictures- the main reason being that this trip was last December (2011) and I didn't think I would be doing this so I did nothing to prepare for it.

With that said, enjoy the show!

DETAILS

AIRCRAFT: EVA AIR BOEING 777-300ER
CLASS: ECONOMY (*sigh*)
FLIGHT: BR 37
ORIGIN: SFO - San Francisco International Airport, San Francisco, CA
DESTINATION: CGK - Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Jarkata, Indonesia
LAYOVER: 1
LAYOVER AT Macedonian Airlines (Greece)">IN: TPE, Taoyuan International Airport, Taoyuan, Taiwan

PART ONE. TO THE AIRPORT

The whole family was going to visit Indonesia once again. (I'll write the TPE - CGK sector later) we were going to book my favorite airline, SQ, but we decided against it because it was a few hundred dollars more expensive. So we ended up going for the cheapest, EVA Air.

Since it was a whole-family trip we needed someone to drive us- the car park was too expensive at SFO and we were staying for two weeks. We asked our thoughtful friends and they drove us.

When we arrived, it was freezing outside. It was nighttime. We went in and checked in the long Economy class line

PART TWO. AT THE AIRPORT

(Un)luckily for us, our gate was all the way at the other end- we walked and walked for what seemed like ages and finally arrived. Soon after, we were sitting in the holding room waiting to be invited on EVA Air's Triple Seven. I was furiously typing away on my iPad downloading some Family Guy from iTunes from the free WiFi in the airport. EVA Air has good movies (at that time it had a complete collection of the Harry Potter movies...) but I'd already watched most of the movies they offered.

CHECKLIST FOR A LONG HAUL PLANE TRIP:

At least two books that I haven't read (in case I get bored of the first one)
At least twenty-five games on tablets
At least two tablets
Some episodes of tv shows
A Movie

And I'm all set.

Then soon, Premium Laurel class was called (this is the first/business of EVA), then our class. We were called by rows... And lucky us, we had the back of the plane.

PART 3. AT Macedonian Airlines (Greece)">IN THE PLANE.

When we boarded, the plane was 3/5 full. After we boarded, the plane was a few seats (at least in our cabin) from full. I guess a lot of people were also planning to travel to Taipei or Asia for their two-week Christmas break. We were seated, finally. Unfortunately I don't remember the seat number, but I do remember it was somewhere in the forties. (43, 44, 45) we had the window aisle all to our self and one seat in the middle section. As we were settled a child behind me started kicking the seat. I thought to myself, "14 hours of this and I'll probably throw myself out of the window halfway." but I obviously didn't, because soon enough his parents calmed him down with the AVOD.

Amazingly it took thirty FULL MINUTES until the captain said "We might have a slight delay here. Technical issues." and we were stuck. Just sitting there. Never have an idea what "slight" would mean. It could be a minute.... thirty minutes.... thirty hours.... or more likely, thirty years. We waited and waited until it was close to 2:30 am (our scheduled departure/take off was supposed to be 12:30am). I was really worried because we might miss our TPE - CGK sector which would be taking off three hours after our scheduled landing at TPE. We would miss the flight for sure.

Then, suddenly, the PA came alive and said "We're sorry for the slight delay. Please wait a little while our ground crew tries to fix the problem." And I thought "slight?" My mother was sort of worried because of technical issues, she didn't want to fly. She considered getting off, but the jetway was already disconnected to the plane. We were stuck. I called a stewardess and politely demanded an explanation for the delay. She explained that we were over the maximum take off weight- cargo was pretty heavy. We were trying to sort out what we should do.

An hour later (seemed like thirty years to me) we started moving. At first I didn't believe what I was seeing, so I started hitting myself on the head and that probably seemed weird to the stewardess and she asked if something was wrong. I replied nothing, blushed, and "fell asleep."

As we pulled out, the engines started (pretty cool. GE90 engines starting on a cold night in SFO...), taxied to the runway, and took off.

PART 4. THE EVA AIR EXPERIENCE

First thing I'm going to say is that I'm not a fanboy. Although that my username suggests otherwise, I'm not a fanboy. I love love SQ but I do like several other airlines such as CX, VX, LH, and much more. But just saying, I now will never fly BR. EVER.

When we took off, I felt good. We were finally on our way. I forgave the delay and I was happy again. I asked for water because I was pretty dehydrated. A stewardess came with a sour face, like she didn't want to be there at all, and said OK very curtly. She then came back with a cup (standard economy class cup that you would see on any other airline) half way full with water. I accepted it with a smile, a smile that she didn't return back. I mean, my throat was burning here, yet all she gives me is half cup of water? This is not how it should go. A few minutes later I was still thirsty, so I went over to the galley to self-serve myself.

I filled up my cup to the brim, drunk it all and threw it away. I walked back to my seat and watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (despite me saying earlier that I didn't want to watch any of the movies on the screen). It was a pretty bad experience, too. I don't know what's wrong with the AVOD, but half the time it wouldn't respond to my touches. All the other AVODS work fine, but this one stuttered and crashed. I decided to quit the movie and start watching stuff on my iPad.

I fell asleep half way through an episode of Castle (really cool tv series by the way) and my mother woke me up for breakfast. She told me she got me omulet with sausage. It tasted OK, and this time it came with a full cup of water
As I was drinking my coke (yes, coke for my breakfast   ) The plane suddenly lurched. We were in turbulence, and really crazy turbulence at that. We were near the coast of Alaska- up and down the plane went. What I didn't realize (due to the excitement of the moment) was that I was drenched with coke. I really wanted to go the the lavatory, but guess what? I couldn't. So for an hour I fell asleep all sticky from the coke. No stewardess offered any towel, or wipe, or anything.

Thanks BR. Thanks a lot. Finally after a long hour, the turbulence ended. I had never experienced that level of turbulence for that much of a time, but there is a first for everything, right? I played around with my iPad. Everything was uneventful from then on. We landed, an good landing surprisingly, and parked at the gate. Now I had to see if my flight to CGK had left or not.

TOMORROW WE WILL CONTINUE THE EPIC QUEST FROM TPE TO CGK.... AND FIND OUT WHETHER MY FLIGHT HAD LEFT, OR NOT, AND IF AND Irtysh-Avia (Kazakhstan)">IT DID, WHAT I DID AFTER THAT....

Thanks so much for journeying with me on BR237!

Hello there; don't worry about the lack of pictures...a first report is a first report!

I imagine the crew were asked to be seated during the bad turbulence. If this happened after the turbulence calmed down, then that's not good, especially if you asked. From what you've said, the service on this flight was rather hit and miss. Mostly miss.

Thanks for writing and keep 'em coming!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Yes, I asked for one but all she did was just frown and say we had no towels on board, and left. The flights service was indeed horrible but I think we should stay tuned for the next sector to see if this bad service continues

Thanks for reading and giving your time to reply!!!

I have flown on EVA Air before and I do agree with you that the service has a lot to improve on

However, that won't stop me from flying with the airline again.

SQ is a good airline, but is no longer in my favourite list!

I would rather fly with other airlines these days.

Cheers
Charles

Yes, im not saying that I'll never fly Eva again, but I don't think ill fly it on this sector again.

Why is SQ not on your fave list anymore? Apparently your username is a SQ aircraft (9V) haha

Thanks
Glenn

If I can change my nick, I will do so.

Used to enjoy flying with SQ, but on my recent flight experience with SQ, I have been pretty disappointed with the airline.
Service has been inconsistent these days, and not to mention the ridiculous Y class fare!

Cheers
Charles

Shucks... That's too bad. Maybe it was just that crew and that sector? All of my previous SQ flight experiences have been the same...

I totally agree with you. I booked Y from SFO to SIN (SQ15 stop in ICN, unlike SQ1 where we stop in HKG) and it cost more than 700$ USD compared to airlines like BR and CX which have reasonable prices. But my dad actually loves SQ so he went ahead and spent a day finding a cheaper fare... and we found one only 350$ USD more expensive. I would've been happy to fly CX... save 350$ and maybe get put up on Premium Economy, something SQ doesn't have
