Santa Barbara In June: CRJ, EMB-120, A320

I headed out to Santa Barbara last month to visit my parents and to attend a high school reunion. It was a lot of fun!

I had a short window for this trip, being bogged down with work. So I decided to just take one day off from work and do a Friday-Sunday trip. My stepbrother was also flying out, so in the interest of saving time, I sucked it up and took the nonstop DEN-SBA flight, on an (ugh!) CRJ-200. I usually connect via LAX or SFO to upgrade and fly on a larger jet, plus the connecting flight is usually on an EMB-120 Brasilia. I booked on the United website:

DEN-SBA (CRJ-200)
SBA-SFO (EMB-120)
SFO-DEN (A320)

It was a sunny, hot morning in Denver. I parked in my favorite row M in the economy lot and made it through security and up to the east United Club pretty quickly.

Just a bagel and some coffee for me, please. I grabbed a nice seat next to the window, looking north toward Concourse C.

The club was busy, but not super-crowded. CNN blares night and day from this TV, but I like to sit behind the TV cabinet where it's quieter and the view is good.

I headed down to the gate at about 7:40; boarding was quick and I was soon on the tarmac. Look, it's an old, gray CRJ, one of a dwindling group.

Cramped and warm, but not unbearable. Unfortunately, the college-age guy in the window seat put his shade down (and the folks across the aisle did the same) and slept the whole way to Santa Barbara, so I had no outside views.

It was a beautiful, sunny day in Santa Barbara, unlike the "June gloom" I'd expected.

I was out of the airport within 15 minutes, heading up the coast to Solvang and my folks' house.

Anyway, after a fun couple of days up in Solvang/Santa Ynez/Los Olivos, it was time to head home.

I quite enjoyed the 2012 Passat I drove (thanks, Alamo), even though it was a very plain one. But it got 32.6 mpg and the Bluetooth worked well. This is at Refugio beach on the 101 between Gaviota and El Capitan (north of Santa Barbara).

I returned the car and was checked in within a few minutes. The new terminal has been open for 10 months now. How about a tour?

This airplane sculpture pivots and spins with the slightest breeze. The temperature was a perfect 72, making me not want to fly back to Denver, where it was 102 that day!

Here is the old, 1941 terminal, which was recently picked up and moved, and rotated a bit. The newer wings have been demolished.

Security is upstairs; beyond this area to the south is the baggage claim area and the rent-a-car counters.

Even the restrooms have some nice Spanish tile, a Santa Barbara trademark.

This nice mural decorates the escalators. I'd guess it depicts the annual Santa Barbara Fiesta, a fun event that happens every July.

About 15 minutes later, my aircraft to SFO, a Skywest EMB-120, N299SW, showed up, looking quite shiny in her corporate livery.

Why do people get window seats then? I get frustrated when this happens when you're sitting in the aisle or middle, and someone does this.

We boarded up pretty quickly, taxied out and were soon airborne. I had a seat in row 9, the best one on the aircraft, with about 45 inches of legroom. I love the EMB-120!

Here's Refugio Beach, where I'd been a few hours earlier. Drive up this road into the foothills and you will come out on the other side near Santa Ynez. Near the top is where Ronald Reagan's ranch is.

Here's the Santa Ynez Valley, where I grew up and where my folks still live. Buelllton is in the forground, Solvang and Santa Ynez are a bit further behind.

The flight attendant was quite friendly, serving drinks to the nearly full cabin. She announced that her "special cocktail or mocktail" was available: orange juice, a bit of cranberry juice and a splash of ginger ale. I had one, added a mini of Bacardi rum and enjoyed the views. Our approach to SFO was a little bit bumpy but quite scenic.

Since my departure gate was 73A (not down the main concourse), I decided to head to the International United Club on the G concourse. Here's N219UA, a 777-200 getting ready to head to Frankfurt as UA926.

One thing I don't like about the new livery is the location of the registration numbers; it's too low and much harder to see than on the old UA style. But I'm nit-picking.

Soon it was time to board for a completely routine, but enjoyable flight.

After a few CO-crewed flights, it was nice to get back on a traditional PMUA flight. I don't know why, but the service just feels more warm and familiar to me.

After takeoff, warm nuts and some cheap but pleasing Smoking Loon shiraz were served.

Dinner was a choice of a "flatbread chicken sandwich" or a "chicken salad." I chose the former. Both were served with tomato bisque.

The sandwich was a mixture of chicken, tomato and melted cheese, served atop a sort of pizza/biscuit dough. It was total comfort food, and very basic, but it was quite tasty.

The usual fruit bowl (pineapple, green melon, red grapes) was also served, along with the tomato bisque, which had a nice, spicy flavor.

After dinner, more drinks and and oatmeal-raisin cookies were served. A nice dinner.

Stainless is a pretty resiliant metal. Buff it once; it stays shiny practically forever. LOL.

The upper half of the nacelle is Stainless, but the lower half aft of the inlet is aluminum. When they were first manufactured, the nacelles actually came with Titanium access doors, but were replaced with stainless after it was found by airlines that the titanium just couldn't hold up to the stress of handling from frequent maintenance checks.



Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.

Thanks for the nice story! Nice to see a EMB120 report. Not to many here. Really nice little A/C´s. I flew them twice in the Northwest in 2008.

Thanks, Matthew. That flight DEN-SBA was full, so maybe he didn't choose that seat. They did a very nice job with SBA; it is a nice place to fly to/from. Santa Maria is nice too, but you can only fly to LAX on UA.

Thanks, ghifty. I miss the old terminal at SBA, but it was way past its useful life. They did have a great restaurant/bar upstairs that was outside security, so you could just stop by and watch airplanes with your meal/drinks.

Goldenshield: I did not know that; I can see the two metals now that you explained it so well. I have seen some custom cars with stainless steel bodies that were left outside to show how good they looked with very little maintenance.

Robert: Thanks for your comments. I love the EMB-120, maybe a little bit less when the weather is bad. I flew SBA-SJC once in December during a windy/rainy storm. What a ride! The airsick bags were coming out, people were crying and moaning. I will not forget that flight!

The gray livery looks nice when it is kept up, but with everything scheduled to be repainted soon, they have kind of let them go to pot. It looked stunning on the 747-400. I like the white, blue, red and orange, too, but the "stars and bars" that came before (like '70-'73) is my favorite.

DEN-SBA is 2:39 gate to gate. Too long for sure, especially with no window!

Yes, Santa Barbara is a nice little town; I could stay there and do nothing but eat tacos! I used to live in Isla Vista, about a mile from the airport. I remember the Pan Am DC-10s that used to fly in for repairs there.

The Brasilias are wonderful, especially on a scenic route when the weather is nice. I love being able to see Malibu, the Channel Islands, Hearst Castle, Monterey and all those other great California sights from a nice, low altitude.

What a nice read for a mid-summer night. I was mostly impressed by the ramp used to get passengers off the plane, first time I see this, really. Overall, it seems you had a nice bunch of flights.
I was mostly attracted by the Emb 120 in the title and obviously not disappointed.
Another stunning feature which I've never seen, at least in Europe is the upgrade monitor. Quite funny!

Thanks for the report. Love SBA. Have been flying into SBA a couple times a year for work for 10 years or so. Was there in June also and experienced the new terminal for the first time. A BIG improvement for pax. Had a local tell me that the original SBA commercial terminal was one of the oldest in CA. Part of the agreement for the building the new larger terminal was to maintain the original architecutral design and to preserve the old terminal in some way. I think they did that well.

My previous trip into the old terminal all the computers were down for early morning departures. They said a construction glitch on the new terminal knocked them out. I was on AA's first flight to LAX. Agents had to do old school hand written boarding passes and check in. Huge lines out to the street side. I ended up o.k -- AA's first flight left only 30 mins late and I just made my LAX connection.
