My Jazzy Trip To The Okanagan YYC-YLW On A DHC-8

Hello, this is my first TR, so I'm still getting the hang of it. there are very few pictures. as I got into TR's after this trip took place.

Routing:
CYYC (Calgary International Airport) to CYLW (Kelowna International Airport),

Timing:
10:30 departure, and 10:45 arrival, and 14:30 departure and 15:00 Arrival

Flight Time:
45 minutes (without time change)

Aircraft:
DHC-8 300 C-F??? (I couldn't get the registration)

First time on this aircraft

Second time flying a Dash-8

First time flying Jazz



Pre- Booking


I decided that I wanted to go on a trip to kelowna to visit family months before I actually looked at flights. this would be my first trip without a parent, so I was in charge of everything.

Booking/ website

I went to Air Canada's website (Jazz operates code-share with them, and their own website offers no booking options), and founf that it had a very simple, and easy to use interface. Looking at the different flights, the 10:00 deptarture flight would be the most reasonable, as my parents and siblings plane left for Winsor at 9:45. I was able to select my seat (4A) with no further issues.

Check In

On the day before my departure, i did an online check in almost immediately after it opened. i was given the option to change my seat (unnescesary, for me), and print my intinerary and boarding pass. looking at it, i found that my flight departed from gate A10, at the ground level gates.

Airport

I arrived at the airport early, as my parents had to hurry to the westjet counters, and then wiated for my gate escort (my gandfather) to arrive. Baggage check was easy and painless, and an efficient, but sour looking agent took carre of my bags, and grandfathers gate pass. there was a fair queue at the security, as Air Canada flight 9 (to Tokyo, Narita) was departing soon. once through security, i made my way to concourse A, and down the escalator we went to the ground level Gates, usually reserved for Jazz's CRJ and Dash-8 Operations.

Boarding Area

Calgary International's Ground level gate boarding area is a bit like a cattle ranch, as it was one big room for 10ish gates... there is a small cafe and a window to the apron, and a hudson's. but other than that, it somewhat reminded me of a bunker.

Boarding

My flight was extremely delayed (almost a hour) because there was a huge backlog in Edmonton, where my aircraft was. I could tell the delay was unsuspected, as the turnaround was very short (less than 5 minutes!) finally, boarding was called, and I bid farewell to my grandfather, and headed to the agent, who escorted the small group of passengers for this flight to our gate (after a walk down the ‘warehouse like’ walkway) and found one of Jazz’ Yellow DHC-8 300s sitting there in the hot Alberta sun.



Taxi/ Takeoff

Due to the delay, our flight didn’t go to the end of runway 34, as we could easily takeoff in half of it. During the taxi, I noticed that the crew made no announcements; instead they used a pre-recorded tape for everything (even the welcome aboard!) A few seconds after we turned onto the runway, the 2 P&W engines spooled up to full power and after a (Very) short takeoff roll, we were airborne.

Cruise/ Service

About 10 minutes after we took off, we reached our cruising altitude, and the service began. I was honestly amazed by our crew, that day. They seemed very happy to do their jobs, and did it with a smile. Jazz is a separate company from Air Canada, and it is visible, in that even on a short, 45m flight, a drink service and choice of pretzels and snack mix were offered. Jazz really cares about their customers, and it is visible in their service.

Descent

Around 30m after we took off, the fasten seatbelt sign was turned on, and we began the descent into Kelowna. There was no turbulence, and the pilots made it very enjoyable for everyone on board. After turning for final over (roughly) Vernon, the gear and flaps were dropped, and the engines spooled down to almost idle.

Landing/ Taxi to gate

Just like the approach, the jazz pilots made an immaculate landing, with a very gently touchdown, and moderate braking, as so that we would not have to taxi very far. Once we turned off of the active runway, the pilots made sure that we knew that we could use our mobile phones. I have noticed that on dash-8s, the #1 engine seems to run more slowly after arrival then the #2… anyone know why that is?

Deplaning and baggage claim

Deplaning was quick and easy, with bright yellow markings telling us where to go. Once in the terminal, it was a fast walk to the baggage claim, where my aunt met me. Our baggage was out in a snap, and I was on my way within 10m of arriving.

Final comments/ Ratings

Jazz is a wonderful airline to fly on, and I highly recommend them. The service on this flight was wonderful, even despite the short flight length. The only part that I did not understand was the pre-recorded everything, as it would be nice to have a real person talk.

- Aircraft (interior)- 7/10 comfortable, and clean, just a bit worn, though.
- Service- 10/10- friendly, helpful and proud to do their job.
- Meal- 8/10- if you call water and pretzels a meal… but for a 45m flight very pleasing.
- Flight- 8/10- Smooth, Seamless, but delayed.
- Overall- 9/10- I would fly jazz again anyday
