Toronto Cruising, Pt.2/2 767+A321

Hi, I am new to trip reports, and this trip took place before I took an interest in TR’s so there are no pictures, sorry! This is part 2/2 of my trip to Toronto. leg one is here: Toronto Cruising, Pt.1/2 767+A321 (by YYCspotter Jul 5 2012 in Trip Reports)

AC1185 -CYYZ (Toronto Pearson International Airport) to CYYC (Calgary International Airport)

20:00 departure and 22:10 arrival

A321-200 C-GIUF
First time on this aircraft
Second time on an A321
13th time flying Air Canada
15th time on a Narrowbody Aircraft


There is really no pre-booking, as I chose the seats for flight 1185 at the same time that I chose the seats for flight 10, for the flight to Toronto.

I looked at the seats for the return flight from Toronto when I got back from my travels, and decided on seats 28D, 28E, and 28F. As usual, the website gave me no hiccups, except for the occasional freeze.


Being that my father was with us, he took care of the check in on his laptop, and printed our boarding passes and itinerary for me.


My dad drove us to the airport, and then used his star alliance gold status to get us priority bag check. He then bid is farewell and began the drive to Windsor, where he was working at the time. We then made our way to security. Where a small queue had formed. Security was a breeze, with no abnormal occurrences or issues. I grabbed a quick muffin from Tim's for the flight, and made our way to the gate.

Boarding Area

Toronto boarding areas are like lounges compared to Calgary. They are spacious, comfortable and easy to navigate. Our flight was delayed by ½ hour, and our initial gate was taken by a departing 319 to YEG, and it was only until much later that we were informed (after having to ask) where AC1185 was boarding. There was no announcement, or anything to notify us of the change, other than our shiny A321 taxiing by.


Boarding was delayed further due to an issue in the cleaning of the aircraft. When we were (finally) able to board, we made our way down the jetbridge. Inside and out, our aircraft was nothing special. The barding took a while, as one door was used (despite the available second door and jetbridge). Do airports/airlines ever make use of the A321’s 2L door? When the familiar thump of a closing cargo door was heard, everyone prepared for the safety demo.


During pushback, the crew tried to start the pre-recorded safety demo, but failed multiple times. Something I have never seen on AC lately is a live demonstration! We began our taxi for runway 23 (a long one, as we were at the other end of the airport!) and passed all of the terminals. Some interesting traffic I caught was a KL 747-400C, CX 777-300 Asia world city, and an AY 757-200 on final. We began a Powerful takeoff (compared to the 767) and we off the ground in no time. Some beautiful Toronto views were given shortly after departure, and we began our journey home.


We made a fast climb to our cruising altitude of FL350 (the airplay actually worked this time!) and levelled off, so thus the beverage cart came around. As usual, I took water, and enjoyed it with the muffin I bought from Tim Horton’s, before boarding. Compared to my flight to YYZ, this crew were stellar. They consistently came around to check on the passengers, and came around with the BOB cart twice! I opted for the reasonably priced cheese and crackers, and checked airplay. I watched Vampires Suck, and Transformers 2, until I checked in on airplay. It showed we were just over a place called ‘Hancock’ and were gently beginning our descent.


Being that it was around 22:50, the world out of my window was black. Apart from the occasional city we overflew, it was darkness. We suddenly made a turn to our left, as the runways had changed, and instead of landing on rw16, we would take rw28 instead. City lights lit up the window, and the wing became more and more visible as we descended.

Landing/Taxi to Gate

We glided into YYC smoothly and landed rather firmly, but not like the one I had experienced before. Seconds after touchdown, a large object came into view and it was then I realized that there was (none other than) the AN-124 right up close to my gate! Unfortunately, all my pictures were blurry, thanks to the slow shutter speed of my camera. We used up the whole runway to arrive, and held while crossing runway 34/16 for an arriving US A319. We docked at concourse A, and prepared to deplane.

Deplaning/Post Arrival/Baggage Claim

Deplaning began as soon as the door was opened, and with a flurry of delayed travellers, we were swept off the plane. We managed to catch ourselves after we got out of the way of everyone, and prepare for the walk to the baggage claim. When we eventually got to where we needed to be (carousel 5, shared with a UA CRJ from Denver) and got our bags. My dad has found that YYC is one airport that truly respects priority baggage! We got a taxi (my grandfather’s truck, actually) and headed home.

Final Comments/Ratings

Air Canada has really backed up my bipolar theory with this crew. AMAZING! They were helpful and kind with many passengers, and made sure everyone enjoyed the smooth flight. The fact that airplay actually worked (something that usually doesn’t on AC domestic) was a huge 1up, and the AN-124 made it even that much cooler!

- Aircraft (interior) - 9/10- spotless, with the exception of the peanut butter smeared on the window…

- Service- 10/10- Awesome crew loved their jobs, truly passionate for their work.

- Meal- 5/10- Overpriced BOB items, and lack of texture in the food I ordered

- Flight- 9/10- With the exception of the delay, smooth and well-polished.

- Overall- 7/10- Awesome trip. Would love to do it again!

Thanks for reading, the next one won’t be until December, as that is the next time that I’m “Scheduled” to fly. Next up (in a while) will be testing the WestJet Care-Antee to SXM!

The second door is not available for boarding. It's is an emergency exit only. I you look closely it's quite a bit smaller.

Baggage arriving from the US would not have been on the same carousel as a domestic arriving flight.
