Cyprus with Aegean: Business A321 LHR-LCA-LHR
Hello!
Yes, it’s me again, with my third trip report this week. Still got one more to go too (Cityjet RTM-LCY) before I’m finally up to date and able to, er, “enjoy” the English summer.
If you’d read some of my earlier reports from this year, you’d know I’m a major fan of the spending ability of bmi’s Diamond Club miles. With the sale of BD to BA earlier this year, the Golden Era of cheap premium trips was coming to an end. LH & co decided rather abruptly to end their agreement with BD. The rest of Star Alliance would be withdrawn from BD search engines at the end of May. So sad!
Still, there was opportunity for one final trip before the party ended. I tried to book another stonkingly cheap Europe-SIN-India flight with SQ in C (and actually got a PNR on one occasion), but somewhere along the line each itinerary got cancelled before ticketing. It looked like this sort of routing was finally disallowed. As such, I began hunting for a trip somewhere in Europe. With the LH family out of the picture, I had a choice of SK, TK, TP and A3. I discounted SK as I wanted to go somewhere warm and cheap. I had a brainwave when I realised that TP had direct summer flights from London to the Azores – unfortunately I remembered wrong as that was Sata not TAP. In the end I narrowed it down to direct flights from London – either FNC in Madeira with TP or Larnaca in Cyprus with A3.
I really enjoyed my flights with Aegean in Feburary, as well as my time on the island. TAP was a bit more of an unknown quantity, so even though I hadn’t been to Madeira before, I plumped with Aegean.
Aegean have a daily flight from LHR to LCA with nice daytime hours. For the summer they have based one of their 4 A321s in LCA just to operate this route. From the beginning of the winter season, this route will be switched over to LGW. At 2040 miles, this is the longest flight in the Aegean portfolio, and the first time I’ve flown an airline’s longest route.
Courtesy of GC Mapper:
When I was in Cyprus in February, I spent most of the time in the South of the island. This time I’d be heading for the Turkish occupied North.
Without further ado, onto the flights!
As mentioned in earlier reports, check in facilities in LHR T1 keep moving. Aegean is now handled in Area K where BA used to be, followed by LH/OS, followed by TP/OU. There was a long line for economy, but no one waiting for Business. Security was quick, and before long I was in the Star Alliance business lounge. It had been a while since I was last in here. The catering is marginally better here than in the BD lounge, although as it lacks windows, I find it rather boring. The place with full of loud Americans having rather excruciating conversations with each other. Without having any interest in the conversation matter, I learnt all about someone’s holiday plans, what they did in London, where they were off to on the next holiday, and how they knew someone living nearby the random couple they’d decided to have a conversation with sitting a few rows over. Please, keep you’re tiresome stories to yourself in future. I wolfed down the best of the hot catering, then headed over to the BD lounge.
As you can see from the sign, the BD lounge is off limits to most Star Alliance flights. However, thankfully, Aegean has come to an arrangement with BD to use the lounge still (which shows that there was no reason for LH to suddenly stop their Silver members using this lounge). I was expecting the place to be empty given the lack of other *A passengers, but the place was surprisingly full. Still, my usual seat in the corner was free.

It was a lovely sunny day – perfect for plane spotting
Nice to see the Olympic flame plane again
Anyone knows who’s operating this ex-Eurofly A330?
An earlier Aegean flight for Athens
Why do IB planes always look so faded? I think it’s that horrible middle red/orange stripe.
Ah-ha, here’s my plane
A gorgeous FI 757 arriving
A shiny newly painted Virgin taxiing past…looks like the paint is already peeling though
Two giants, a lightweight and a minnow
I tracked the inbound flight, which despite leaving LCA early, had landed quite late. I left the lounge some ten minutes after seeing the plane taxi past.

Gate 17 today
There was quite a crowd already waiting to board. I noticed when I OLCIed that the business class was reduced from 5 to 4 rows. Economy was going out full, and C was 56%. Disappointingly there was no priority boarding, just announcements for rows XYZ to board. To compound matters, everyone was held on the airbridge for a good five minutes, for no particular reason.

Business
I was one of the first people to sit down in the Business cabin. Reasonable legroom, and a tidy cabin.
I heard a few comments from people walking past. “Looks nice”. “What a waste of money, they only have, like, 1 extra millimetre of space”. “I like the tables”.
I must say, I did agree about the waste of money comment. My flights were retailing at over £900 return, which is pretty expensive, a 400% or so mark-up over economy. My flights came to around 9,000 miles + £180 tax, which I thought was on the cusp of being good value.
Pre flight sweets and drinks were offered.
This was sparkling wine rather than real champagne
Rather late, we pushed back. The captain apologised explaining that the headwinds had been over 200km/h coming up, hence the delay. Thanks to the same winds, our journey should be pretty quick going back down meaning a near on time arrival.
JNB or LHR?

Lovely views over Kent and the Channel today

With the first drinks service I go with my signature G&T and sparkling water
And a packet of nuts
Headphones are handed out
A hot towel and a top up
Table cloths are laid out, and the starters brought out…very tasty aubergine with vegetables and cream cheese.
Over the Alps with lunch
Once my starter is cleared away, I’m handed my main course. The menu offered a choice of Chicken with a pistachio crust, or Farmer’s Lamb. Not eating lamb very often, I wanted to go for that. I asked the FA about the lamb, and she half smiled just saying, “Just chicken”. Thankfully, this was a most serious and disappointing part of the flight. I found the crew, service and catering excellent. Still, she could have started with “I’m sorry, I only have chicken left” rather than just handing it to me assuming I wanted it. Still, the chicken was tasty, so no problems.
With the chicken demolished, it’s time for the dessert. I was really looking forward to this. Sadly, the only bit I liked was the one that looked like a dead slug. The triangle and egg yolk lookalike ones weren’t to my taste.
All rounded off with a nice espresso
The seat – it was quite comfortable with the recline. I had the aisle seat empty, so had plenty of space.
Some more beverages
Moving map – those winds really are strong today, we’re already over Greece
Lovely clouds
It seemed like I was the only one making the most of the Business Class bar today. Everyone else seemed to be content with just one drink with the meal.
Just over half an hour before arrival, the liqueur trolley was rolled down the aisle with chocolates. I went with a Metaxa brandy – not my usual tipple, but was nice to try
I was surprised that we were routed over Turkey…I would have thought that Greek Cypriot flights would be banned from Turkish airspace, similar to how (at least in the past) Taiwan bound aircraft had to fly via HKG/MFM airspace when approaching from the Chinese mainland.
The final resting place of a mosquito

Another hot towel before arrival

Some interesting Eastern bloc aircraft on the ground today
Two nice Flag liveries...I much prefer Aeroflot though
Walking to immigration
Disembarkation was pretty quick, and before long I was through immigration (no queue) and in the arrivals hall. I took a photo of the arrivals screen, but within a few seconds an official turned up saying that photography wasn’t allowed in here (come on, it’s a photo of a TV screen!). He told me to delete the photo, which I did. The previous photo of the Aeroflot plane came on the screen. Before he had a chance to tell me to delete that one too, I told him it was Heathrow, and turned off my camera. He opened his mouth to say something else, but then walked away. Hmm.
I grabbed by bag, and headed out for the shuttle bus to Nicosia. I was *just* in time to catch the next one, so I was pretty happy about that.
With the late arrival in LCA, and then early departure on the return, I decided to spend the first night in Nicosia, and the final night in Larnaca. From Nicosia I’d hire a car and drive up for a few days on Golden Beach in the far northeast (the best beach in the country), before a night in Famagusta, then Kyrenia, then back to Laranca.
My rather crappy (but cheap) hire car

My hut on Golden Beach (I don’t recommend Burhan’s unless you like being roasted alive at night)
Perfect!

Driving through the donkey sanctuary which led to a little chapel, and the tip of Cyprus
From Golden Beach I drove down to near Famagusta – the hostel wasn’t great, but once the hordes of tourists (Turkish? Russian?) had gone for their buffet dinner, the poolside was quite nice.
Nearby ancient ruin of Salamis
Lots of snails!
I just had 2 hours in Famagusta, which was just enough time to see everything of interest. There is an amazing city wall which you can scramble up for free if you find the right gate
Remains from Venetian times?
A nice Efes in the sun
Now this is rather interesting. The high rise hotel the other side of the fence (which I wasn’t supposed to photograph) are in Varosha, a neighbourhood of Famagusta. Pre the 1974 invasion, this was one of the world’s most famous beach hotspots. Since then, the area was been walled off for various reasons, and now the place is slowly falling apart. Journalists that have visit the area report light bulbs still glowing in abandoned buildings, dealerships full of brand new 1974 cars, and sea turtles nesting on the main beach.
From Famagusta it was over to Bellepais Monastery
And finally to Kyrenia. I stayed at the White Pearl Hotel, which is right on the harbour (and has been voted the most scenic place in the country, something I’d probably agree with)
Party ships

With the castle seen, and the car handed back, I headed back to Larnaca. Following Palmjet’s nice looking trip to Larnaca, I thought I might spend a few hours on the beach seeing what was happening. The beach wasn’t anywhere near as nice as Golden Beach, and it was a LOT more busy/
Cyprus Air

Sadly planes were arriving from the other end, so we only got departures, which I discovered, are much hard to photograph! I walked onto a supposedly forbidden area of the beach – nice and empty here!

Walking back into town
Way too early for my liking, the next morning I was up at 5am. I booked a taxi through the hotel. The driver was quite intent on not letting the speed drop below triple figures, so we got to the airport pretty quickly.
I manage to time my entrance to the terminal perfectly, arriving at the check in desk just before opening. There was a substantial economy class queue, but no one waiting for the premium desk. I feel more than one set of eyes on me as I walk to the front and am seen first…see, it’s more than just an millimetre of extra legroom!
My bag is tagged, and boarding pass printed. The lady is friendly, and says “I’m sure you know where the lounge is”… thankfully I recall from my last time in town. There is no queue for immigration or security, so I’m heading for the lounge. The Cyprus Airways lounge that BA use is nice and airy, with some nice windows. The Aegean lounge next door couldn’t not have been more different. It’s tiny, and has no natural light. The décor is nice and stylish, but I’d take the CY lounge over this one any day of the week. As I walk in, I ask about a shower room, but am told there isn’t one available.
This is basically the entire lounge, not much bigger than a large sitting room.
Some breakfast
Star Alliance departures for the next 24 hours
A few minutes after I arrived, a young English guy (who’d end up sitting in front of me) who also asked about a shower, meaning 100% of customers today have asked! He proceeded to pour himself a large glass of red wine. A few more people slowly drifted in. As there wasn’t much to do in the lounge, I thought I’d go for a bit of a walk – there wasn’t much happening around the terminal.
FIDS
-DVZ again
Sadly, whilst there was an announcement that Star Gold and Business class passengers could board at their leisure, in practice, by the time they made that announcement, there were so many people standing by the gate, nobody could get through. Surely in this day and age, it wouldn’t be so hard (and cost no extra money) to say something along the lines of: “Ladies and Gentlemen, please stay seated during this announcement! First we would like to board families with young children, THEN Business Class/* Gold, THEN rows XYZ. Please remain seated until you are invited to board”.

I managed to get though after a wodge of people sitting near the back got on…I was the first business passenger. Once again the divider had been moved forward in the time OLCI opened and closed, so only 3 rows of business today (8 passengers). I guess economy was full.

As it was a morning flight, there was no wine list, just a menu

I elected to go for the omelette with veal sausage. It tasted quite nice, although I did think that serving only half a sausage in business class was rather cheap of Aegean. I wonder what they served down the back?

A sight not long for this world
My plane after disembarkation. A rather rude BAA woman shouted at me that photos aren’t allowed “for security reasons” (where have I heard that before?). How is taking a photo of a plane I just got off a security risk?
Unfortunately we parked at gate 5, which is a nice long walk away down some dingy corridors to immigration.
A view into T1 airside
Thankfully, there was very little queue at immigration, and before long I was at the carousel, where my bag was already going round.
Heading for the bus station
My bag, at the end of its final journey. After many journeys, the bottom has finally broken. Time to hunt for a new suitcase.
Well, overall I was very happy with how everything went. The flights with Aegean were nearly perfect…the two slip ups (as far as I was concerned) was the lack of priority boarding, and the FA just assuming I was happy with the chicken. And please, throw in the other half sausage!
Cyprus was great. It was pretty hot (40C+), so I came back to a very cold and wet Britain with a lovely tan. Having now been both south and north, I’d say they were both as good as each other. As the North uses Turkish Lira, it was slightly cheaper, and the food slightly more interesting. Also, it’s less busy, but has less things to do.

Hey Gabriel great report.
I have been to all those places you documented in the North. Did you notice the Nuns still being there in Apostolos Andreas? They are a dying breed sadly and their only links to the outside were regular UN food supplies and support from the Greek Cypriot authorities. Alot of the young generation of Greeks who did remain were told if they wanted to get an education they had to go South and were not allowed back in to the North. I think only a few token villages in Rizokarpaso exist now . Shame they are dying out .
Flights with A3 look good . They offer a decent product and service . Shame the lamb was off but glad you liked the chicken. You certainly got your monies worth from the bar lol...
This no picture taking is getting a bit beyond a joke. I can maybe understand it in Cyprus due to the situation there but not of a TV screen . Also at LHR they are taking the piss and using enhanced security due to London 2012 as a power trip weapon. Even though they have already made a balls up of the security and training of staff just a few weeks ahead.
Lovely shots of the arrivals in LCA. Aeroflot and OA were my favourites so thanks for those
Glad you had a good time and all that food is making me home sick for the region !

Seems to be a more common problem. Although i did question somebody on it at LGW (many years ago) and they said it was down to BAA not wanting their ground equipment/staff being photographed and that if i could get just the plane with no equipment in the way it would be fine.

Yes, it was good, but I was rather dissapointed with the breakfast. Airlines always seem to get very stingy at breakfast time. I mean, people aren't (generally) hammering the drinks, AND they don't include a dessert, so the main event might as well be a bit more generous.

- Your right about breakfast flights, I tend to avoid the early departures to the US to ensure it's a dinner service rather than breakfast, an important meal so we are told but can be so dull!

Great report Gabriel! As I have confessed many a time, Cyprus is in my bucket list and I love reading TRs about the island.
Needless to say it was interesting to see photos from the occupied territory. The Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque in Famagusta (which used to be a Catholic church as it is evident from its architecture) is a building I really want to see up and close. You don't see Gothic-style mosques everyday. Too bad much of it had to be destroyed (especially architectural features of its interior).

Don't blame you. I find it very hard to eat those Greek-Turkish style syrupy desserts. Way to heavy for my liking.
I'm glad you got the opportunity to re-visit the island so soon after your first visit. I need to find some good deal with CY next time I'm in Europe to check out the place myself.

Yeah, it's an interesting island, plenty to explore
Quoting 767747 (Reply 13): I love your coverage of each of your reports - It felt like I took a vacation there as well! Nice job.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the holiday!
Quoting 767747 (Reply 13): Aegean looks very nice in J class, but I found it interesting you talk about some of the little things (like in regards to the chicken dish issue) that make it seem lacking in a few places.
Yeah, like I said, everything was pretty much perfect, so it's the little things that stand out
Quoting 767747 (Reply 13): Larnaca looks very cool, and an interesting place to visit!
Well Larnaca itself isn't great, but the island is wonderful

Hola Gabriel!
Great TR to Cyprus... sure a place to visit.
I have had a look at A· fares from BCNand they seem to offer decent prices, this combined with the great service you show in the report makes it a great destination for winter months.
The meal looked much better and more substantial than the breakfast offered on the way back. The plane looks fresh and comfortable, especially on C when there is no one sitting next to you.
Good to know that no pictures of screens are allowed in LCA...
Any more reports in the coming week? Great to follow them!
Salut!
Roger

So, when are you off?!

The plane was indeed nice and fresh. It;s just a shame about the lacklustre breakfast catering

The airline was better known as IBERWORLD of Spain- and no, it is no longer a charter-company. orbest ORIZONIA airlines is also offering scheduled flights, like Madrid-Edinburgh: http://www.orbest.com !
Quoting debonair (Reply 17): The name of this airline is MERIDIANAfly- and not Eurofly. Eurofly is an airline of the past! The a/c pictured I believe is EI-EZL.
Well, there are still planes painted with Eurofly on the outisde

Interesting, never heard of them. Their EDI-MAD flights only operate once a week, but good to know!

Thanks for a wonderful trip report!
The breakfast service looks a bit lackluster though, compared to its more elaborate lunch and dinner service. I am surprised that there is no dessert service prior to arrival.
Thanks for the plane pictures too!
I love the MS Express E-170 shot!

Yes, it was sad to have a scaled down breakfast, especially on such a long flight

Hi Gabs,
Good to see this one up! I remember us talking about your trip during your stay in Antwerp some weeks ago! It’s also nice to see Aeagean through the eyes of another person, and not OA260, he’s prejudiced (no offence there Philip ). But you prove here as well the Aegean business is a pretty nice way to spend some time in the European skies. The meals look very good as well. The only thing I find a bit weird though is that they actually stationed 4 planes at LCA. What other destinations are served then?
Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter): I heard a few comments from people walking past. “Looks nice”. “What a waste of money, they only have, like, 1 extra millimetre of space”. “I like the tables”.
They probably all know what they were talking about. But it’s like you said: not only the extra space is what matters of course.
Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter): I would have thought that Greek Cypriot flights would be banned from Turkish airspace
Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter): Surely in this day and age, it wouldn’t be so hard (and cost no extra money) to say something along the lines of: “Ladies and Gentlemen, please stay seated during this announcement! First we would like to board families with young children, THEN Business Class/* Gold, THEN rows XYZ. Please remain seated until you are invited to board”.
True. Don’t know why however why they don’t do it.
Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter): The guy in front (the red wine guy from the lounge) shoved his shoes under the seat, just where my feet were. I’d suggest you keep them on for takeoff.
I know some a.netters who do just the same thing, even on very shorthaul. Yuck.
Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter): A rather rude BAA woman shouted at me that photos aren’t allowed “for security reasons” (where have I heard that before?). How is taking a photo of a plane I just got off a security risk?
This trip certainly goes in the books as the one with ‘most yelled at for taking pics’. Sad...

46 SInGAPORE_AIR: Nice report - thanks for the write up. I saw the Eurofly A330 parked near BA's maintenance hangars this evening.
47 gabrielchew: I'm sure KL would be a fine choice. Do you not fancy BA to GLA? Oh dear, is it stil achingly hot? Glad you liked it!
