Hi

This trip report will include BRU-JFK-BRU with Brussels Airlines, Business class on their A330s with the new cabin layout. Please sit back, grab some popcorn and enjoy!

My parents and I decided to spend our holiday outside Europe. First we even planned to combine New York with San Francisco. But we decided to leave San Francisco for the next year or so. My parents prefer non-stop flights only. LH turned out to be a good choice but then I realized we could fly with Brussels Airlines to JFK since they opened BRU-JFK as from June 1st. I checked their fares and they were reasonable.
So a few weeks later we decided to book with Brussels Airlines. Before I knew it, I was already making sure I’d have enough clothes with me! This is my biggest fear when I’m leaving, not having enough clothes with me.
Let’s go!

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/6316/brusselsairlineslogo.jpg

We checked in online 24 hours (as showed on the confirmation) and when we tried to select our seats but the system was showing the old configuration of their A330s : 2-2-2. We knew there are individual seats and two seats together so it was a pure guess where our preferable seats would be. I opted for 1A and my parents decided to go for 1D and 1F. Eventually, this was a good guess!
We arrived at the airport around 6h35. It took another 20 minutes before the baggage drop off opened so meanwhile I got a coffee at Starbucks.

http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/5498/dscf2210r.jpg

Ground crew arrived at the check-in counters and started up some laptops. I haven’t flown outside of Europe before so I was wondering what they were going to do. Thankfully, they only asked some simple questions like how long are you staying, which hotel, business or pleasure… etc. After that, we were the first one to drop off the baggage and the lady nicely told us we could use fast track at the security check and that we have lounge access across gate A42 and the Sunrise lounge at the far end of the A/T terminal. All good news me thinks!
The lounge was full, outdated, dirty and almost nothing to offer. The soda machine and the coffee machine was broken and they were only offering croissants. Very very disappointing! We decided to head to the so promising Sunrise Lounge but it wasn’t opened yet?! I believe this is the logic of Brussels Airlines again? The Sunrise Lounge opens later so we had to wait and we weren’t alone. Thankfully, we had the pleasure to wait in the Sunrise Lounge which was decades further than the one across A42. The sad news is that this lounge is only opened for a few hours.
http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/5002/dscf2213h.jpg
I’m sorry about the low quality and it doesn’t show how bad the lounge was but they were giving me the creepy look…:S.

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/5821/dscf2217g.jpg
The better lounge, Sunrise Lounge. It has some good views too!.

Nice tail of a 9W bird going to India or North-America.

http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/6355/dscf2220i.jpg
Since the first lounge had nothing offer except croissants, I was still hungry so this would be my breakfast then.

We left the lounge around boarding time which was shown on our ticket.

Flight details
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carrier: Brussels Airlines
Route: BRU-JFK
Aircraft registration : OO-SFM
Flight Number: SN501
Seat number: 1A
Departure time: 10.30AM
Arrival time: 12.25PM
Aircraft: A330-301
First flight on: 22-06-1993
Age: 19.1 Years
Construction Number: 030

When we arrived at the gate we saw that they were already boarding… Well I was a bit flabbergasted because they normally announce this in the lounge but I guess they forgot. We were surprised to see economy passengers (up to twenty) using the business lane for boarding. I decided to ask somebody of the crew where the business passengers could board and she was kind of surprised things weren’t going smoothly by her colleagues. In a blink of an eye she arranged that the economy passengers were going to the economy lane so we could board. Thank you nice lady!
Next hurdle to clear: after showing my ticket to a woman, I said:
Me: ‘It would have been more convenient if they announce when boarding begins in the lounge, we didn’t hear anything!’
Lady: ‘Well sir, it wouldn’t have made any difference because we aren’t boarding yet!’
Me: ‘I see, so could you explain to me where all these passengers end up when entering the jet bridge? It Looks like they’re boarding ma’am!’

When I had to ‘pull’ my passport and my ticket out of her hands I entered the jet bridge and yes, they were boarding! Speaking of a bad trained ground crew. Not to mention her tone.

http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/5211/dscf2223.jpg
I’m so glad BRU has glass jet bridges.

The stewardess at the door saluted me and I immediately felt welcome before entering. She asked me to go to the left and take the first aisle. It would lead me to my seat.
I was the first one taking place in the Business class cabin and a few seconds later they were already offering some welcome drink. I opted for some Champagne which was very good.

The seat control. It looks nice but 50% of it wasn’t working. My dad’s seat control wasn’t working at all! The purser was aware of the problem and told (quite loudly) she does not want to get a delay thanks to that. After take-off she managed to get it fixed but it didn’t give my 50% like the massage option

20 minutes after take-off, the crew handed out the menus. I took the Mediterranean mezze plate as a starter and the roasted fillet of cod offered with curried leeks, shrimp and new potatoes as my main course.
Other possibilities would have been:
Scallops served on a bed of crisp vegetables as the starter;
Indian-style veal accompanied by basmati rice as the main course.

After the main course, the crew offered a cheese plate but I really dislike cheeses so the cabin crew gave me the dessert and she asked if everything was ok. I told her I was never treated that well on a plane before! I felt like a king.

Paradise indeed, Chris!

They offered a chocolate after the coffee and they also asked if I wanted something else. I opted for a Coke.

After the lunch service, the cabin crew told us fresh fruit was available during the rest of the flight. It really was fresh and nice! The Coke made it a little less healthy I guess…

Flight attendant: ‘You’re welcome, enjoy the Belgian chocolates!’

We came in fast, it was a some sort of surprise to see Fedex here…

We touched down gently and we had to vacate the runway asap due to traffic. I must say I wouldn’t mind if they added another 4 or 5 hours to the flight  .

After arriving at T1, we had to wait 10 more minutes because they had to tug us into the gate. Meanwhile a steward was having a conversation with us and asking what we thought about the flight. He also asked stuff about the IFE, food, service. He was very friendly and so jealous we got to spend 10 nights in NYC. He only got a layover of 22 hours. After they opened the doors we said goodbye and many thanks!

But then… Immigration. We had to wait over an hour to clear immigration. An Aeroflot A333, a TK A333 and a Korean A380 arrived at the same time so it was nice to see so many people from around the world!
Anyway, we took a cab to Manhattan and before we knew it, we were on the Brooklyn bridge!
When we arrived at the hotel, my mom gave her box of chocolate she received in the plane to the person who was checking us in. He couldn’t be more thankful and he gave us free internet access for the whole stay! I already loved the hotel.
Since I took so much pictures during my stay, I’m only going to show the most interesting ones for you all! The visit to the USS Intrepid.

Right! Let’s go back to the return flight.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flight details
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carrier: Brussels Airlines
Route: JFK-BRU
Registration : OO-SFV
Flight Number: SN502
Seat number: 1A
Departure time: 17.25PM
Arrival time: 06.25AM
Aircraft: A330-322
First flight on: 07-04-1995
Age: 17.3 Years
Construction Number: 095
We checked in 48 hours before the flight which was news for me because on all the papers it says we can only check in 24 hours before departure. The very friendly steward on the BRU-JFK flight told us it was possible 48 hours before. Thanks for the news!
We took a cab to JFK terminal one. He dropped us right in front of the SN drop-off counters! What a service  . There was a Belgian man at the door asking if we’re flying with SN today. We said yes and he guided us to the counters in Dutch. There we saw some economy passengers queuing but nobody at the Business Class counter. We had to put our heavy luggage on the belt but the luggage wasn’t going downstairs, it was being used as a scale. She had some trouble with the amount of luggage. We were starting to believe she was confusing Economy with Business. After a few minutes we received paper tickets and she draw the usual circles. I asked where we could find the lounges and she gave me the weird look.
Lady: ‘Lounge? That’s only for HON-members and Business passengers’.
Me: ‘Pardon me but we are business passengers.’
Lady: ‘Oh, … *looking confused to her colleague*’
Colleague: ‘I’m sorry, you can use the lounge at the right after clearing the security. Please mention that you have fast track, that will save some time!’
me: ‘Thanks! Good bye.’

After a few minutes I saw something was missing. Usually they put another sticker on the luggage, a priority luggage sticker. So we went back and her colleague arranged this for us. For all safety she asked to show our tickets again to make sure her colleagues didn’t make any more mistakes. When we left I could clearly hear her explaining why and what she did wrong.

Please, do not leave trainees alone at Business class counters!
We didn’t had to wait so long at the security and they were all so nice. After that, we continued to the lounge.

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/7/dscf2992r.jpg
Since SN is a member of Star Alliance, 49% owned by LH and it does not have any lounges outside BRU, we were welcome to use the lounge of Lufthansa. Which appeared to be the best lounge so far of this whole trip!

An hour before the departure, they announced that our flight is ready for boarding. Thankfully they announced it this time.
Our gate today was A9, the gate at the far end of T1. Meanwhile I had some time to shot some pictures of the other (European) visitors.

Does anybody know what this AF332 is doing there? I saw it when we arrived and nothing moved. Perhaps a charter or..?

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/6964/dscf2978z.jpg

We showed our tickets and were one of the first who were boarding. Again, there was no clear signs for economy or business. At the door, two good looking crew members saluted me and I got invited to enter the Business class again. There was nobody there and I was hoping this would stay as well!
I noticed the crew was well prepared, the amenity kit, earphones and blankets were already served. On BRU-JFK they were serving this during the flight. When we were taxiing for take-off, I already used my IFE and watched ‘Incredibly close and extremely loud’ which was a very emotional movie.

After 10 minutes, suddenly many business passengers showed up and before I knew it, only 4 seats remained empty!
The captain welcomed us onboard and told us we’ll have some strong tailwinds so the flight would be shorter as expected, around 6h30mins. That’s really fast!

Still connected but 5 minutes after taking this picture, boarding was completed!

There was a lady and her daughter sitting behind me. I guess they had a nice time because they were laughing and giggling all the time. In the beginning it was cute but after a while, very irritating.

After a while I found out some of the passengers were flying for free today because they were crew members or family of the pilot flying that day. I don’t know why but this gave me a really weird feeling. People who fly Business on long haul for free while others have to pay enough for it…?
We were ready to go but ground control kept us waiting because the AF77W was taxiing by. After that, we had to wait for the Air China 744 leaving for Beijing and after that one, we had to wait for the Air France A380!

http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/7286/dscf3048q.jpg
Shortly after the aperitif, they gave us the menu card.

This was the menu of the day:
Dinner
Starter :
- Peppered tuna and mango salsa served over Asian cole slaw with teriyaki glaze
- Poached chicken on seven grain tabbouleh with amaranth herbs.

Main Courses:
- Grilled fillet of beef accompanied by ginger carrot puree, blanched broccoli and cherry tomato
- Herb-crusted cod served with white and wild rice and a medley of sautéed vegetables
- Truffle ravioli offered with herbed Alfredo sauce, sun-dried tomatoes and asparagus tips.
After that, there was a Cheese plate a dessert and the Continental breakfast before landing at Brussels.
I opted for the Poached chicken, theGrilled fillet of beef and skipped the cheese plate.
During the meal, there was turbulence and it never disappeared or increased. The moment when we approached Ireland, the turbulence disappeared.

The beef which was so good. The carrot puree was awesome. The portion looks small but believe me, it’s too much!

Tiramisu as dessert. Woah, it was so nice, this was the cherry on the pie like we say in Belgium

After the dessert the crew cleaned up the cabin and it was put into ‘’sleepingmode’’.

I wasn’t tired yet so I decided to go for a little walk…

Economy Class

When I returned I noticed that the two sitting behind me were gone. A few seconds later they entered the cockpit and the door remained open for a time. When a crew member saw me looking, she decided to close it quickly and giving me the bad look!

I watched some few movies like Avatar, The bucket list and Mike&Molly.
with one simple touch on a button I created a bed of my seat and it was very comfortable. However I didn’t closed my eyes…

Isn’t it beautiful?

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/7537/dscf3090u.jpg

1 hour before landing at Brussels, the crew seemed to be in a rush and served breakfast really fast. Only the smell of the ‘fresh’ coffee coming from the Galley was delicious and making my day.

Simple but delicious

http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/3849/dscf3094d.jpg

I finished my yoghurt but I’m not a real fruit lover so I only ate the good ones. After my last bite, the crew cleaned up and they didn’t even ask if I’d like more coffee or tea. I guess they ‘overslept’ a bit and begun too late with serving breakfast.
30 minutes before landing, a stewardess from economy class asked me to give the headphones back. I agreed as long as I could use the pillow and the blanket till the landing !
The sun was so beautiful but it appeared that the woman- who was travelling for free- behind me, complained about my window that it wasn’t closed. A steward came to me and said:
steward: ‘Close your window, the sun is disturbing other passengers!’’
me: ‘you could have said sir and please… but fine, I’ll do it.’

A few seconds later I found out the woman behind me complained. I was shocked. Couldn’t she ask me personally? After five minutes I realized that it’s my window so I opened it again  She should have brought sunglasses with her haha.
Her daughter disappeared in the cockpit during the descent and landing. I’m not sure this is allowed and again, the door was opened for a few minutes. Even if it’s the daughter of the pilot, it’s not fair nor safe. I wonder if there are any rules about this.
We made some sharp turns and fast descents. A minute or two before the landing the pilot asked the crew to take their seats for landing.

Bye Bye Brussels Airlines, thank you for flying me home.
Verdict:

BRU-JFK
-----------
Ground service at BRU: 4/10
Lounge 1 across gate A42: 4/10
Lounge 2 sunrise lounge: 7/10
Gate service: 2/10
Aircraft: 9/10
Service on board: 9/10
Food on board: 9.5/10
IFE on board: 9/10
Comfort/seat: 8/10

JFK-BRU
----------
Ground service at JFK: 6/10
Lufthansa lounge: 8.5/10
Gate service: 7/10
Aircraft: 8/10 (only 1 lavatory available in Business class)
Service on board: 8/10
Food on board: 9.5/10
IFE on board: 9/10
Comfort/seat:9/10

My personal advice:
Brussels Airlines is a good airline to cross the Atlantic with. Unfortunately, they still have or make some mistakes which gives you a negative feeling about the airline. Sometimes it gives you stress as well. If they change small things here and there, I really believe this is tough competition for other airlines! I really hope they expand their network but rumours have it they want to open BRU-BOS as well… Good luck Brussels Airlines, you’ve grown a lot where you originally came from!

Thank you for reading my trip report. No other trips planned yet but expect a TR to come.

Special thanks to Nils Peeters for sharing his professionalism!

wow great report!

SN seems to offer a very decent service!
I am wondering how they are doing on the new JFK flights? I can imagine that they are doing good, it is a really shame that so many news no Belgium flag carrier served the route!

Cheers and looking forward for more reports.

Hey there, great report! Nice to see the new SN Biz product! Looks like you had some great flights

This is my biggest fear when I’m leaving, not having enough clothes with me.
Let’s go!

You're off to NYC after all, so surely you could've done some more shopping there if necessary
Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
The lounge was full, outdated, dirty and almost nothing to offer. The soda machine and the coffee machine was broken and they were only offering croissants. Very very disappointing!

That was my impression of the lounge also. I really think they should close it down for refurbishments, because it was really that awful!

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
I wasn’t too happy to
see the dirt. Poor cleaning style…

Sad to not see them taking well care of their new interiors. Hopefully that's just a one-off.

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
Indian-style veal accompanied by basmati rice as the main course.

Quite a strange dish, considering the fact that cows are sacred in india. It would be equally strange as a "pork tagine".

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
ʽIce-Cream during the movie’ like they call it! A Magnum Temptation Fruit. It was ok, I just prefer the Magnum Almond but it’s all about the idea!

Movie ice cream is a really nice touch. LX have it also. Wish more airlines could follow! Were you able to ask for seconds on the ice cream?

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
How I Met Your Mother which is a nice TV-show as well!

A nice show indeed, just line 2 1/2 men. Seems like we've the same taste in TV shows, haha
Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
Flight attendant: ‘Sir, please accept this gift from Brussels Airlines as a big thank you for flying with us today!’

That's a very nice gesture! Did they give it to all passengers, or just for you since you were busy snapping shots of the flight?
Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
He was very friendly and so jealous we got to spend 10 nights in NYC.

Well I would've been jealous too, considering the awfuly high hotel prices in NYC during the summer (and the rest of the year too for that matter)

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
Lady: ‘Lounge? That’s only for HON-members and Business passengers’.

No that's a false statement from her also. Lounge access is also given to F, SEN, *G and FTL. That is one bad trainee!

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
Please, do not leave trainees alone at Business class counters!

Yes having trainees at the priority counter is not good at all. I experienced it once, and she didn't even bother welcoming me, nor checking my credentials for using the counter.

Thanks for the great report! I flew SN from JFK-NBO via BRU in economy at the beginning of June and was very impressed with the enitre product. Nice report Niek! The new C cabin looks quite nice, although I don't like the style of moving map - looks a bit too simplistic. Shame the service was a bit touch-and-go. I don't think this is allowed "even if the pilot says Yes". There was an SU plane that crashed a few years ago after the captain let his son fly the plane and disengaged the autopilot.

They're doing pretty good. Both flights had a good loadfactor and I believe they're considering a second daily flight.

Hmm yeah, never thought about it yet. Now that you mention it, it is a weird dish...

All Business passengers got one. On the flight back they gave us a smaller box by the way. Only 4 each..

Thanks Gabriel! I have to agree, the moving map wasn't even working properly on BRU-JFK... Perhaps they can update that one...

Wow, that looks dirty! You should send an email to complain! I'm warning you though, their customer service is crap. Not to mention they only work part time haha! I'm sending an email as well with the pros and the cons. They tend to give miles for that. Give it a try  .

Really nice report! It was nice to see a detailed report about flying with Brussels Airlines. J class looks pretty good - and food of a high standard!

I've flown out of Terminal 1, and found it to be an extremely busy terminal at all times. I remember when Alitalia used to fly their 747 and MD-11 in there, and the wait for their check-in desks would be miles long!

I'm amazed at the level of sharpness the flight attendant took to you about having the window shade up - I would have said the same thing you did!

Thanks for sharing! Glad you had a good time in NYC.

Niek,

Really enjoyed reading your detailed report and the photos were great.

Glad to see you had an good trip to the big apple and that Brussels Airlines offered a decent service in J.
I notice that they use the same IFE system as Air Transat and I think Air Berlin, looks like its a popular choice.

The food presentation looks to be very good though and the outbound desert looks pretty tasty.

It is however a shame to read about the mistakes of the ground staff, however seeing as the onboard product is where you will spend the most time I guess its more important that that is good.

I look forward to reading your future trip reports,

Kev.

Hi Niek,

Interesting report and I’m glad you got to manage the font colours   After reading a few reports on this new SN service already, I can’t help but feeling that the whole operation is still not up to par. Indeed as you say there are bits missing here and there. The gate staff seems to have no clue what they are doing - not the first time this has happened to me at BRU - and the service and board was a bit a hit and miss as well. On a positive note: the cabin looks modern and those large IFE screens are quite nice. The airshow seems to loose its direction sometimes as well: depicting Rabat and Bucharest on a flight towards BRU is a bit beyond me...

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
Flight Number: SN501

How appropriate to have seat 1 on the flagship route!

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
We were ready to go but ground control kept us waiting because the AF77W was taxiing by. After that, we had to wait for the Air China 744 leaving for Beijing and after that one, we had to wait for the Air France A380!

Oh yes, when you’re just a little A333, you have to wait for the biggies and give way.

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
wonder if there are any rules about this.

There will be company rules which most likely prohibit any cockpit visit inflight by non-cabin crew, but in the end it is the captain who is in charge and can probably overrule this. And he did just that.

Niek, this is an excellent trip report! Well done. This is your best trip report so far.

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
I’m sorry about the low quality and it doesn’t show how bad the lounge was but they were giving me the creepy look

I'm sure most a.netters would've endured this at one time or another

The lounge doesn't look too bad from that picture.

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
Seat control which you could pull out and use it like a TV controller. I wasn’t too happy to
see the dirt. Poor cleaning style…

Yeah, I agree. BRU cleaning staff has something to answer for. Although being under the armrest, I think that is one thing that can easily be missed.

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
Well I don’t really like them but some hours later, they were very useful hehe… .

Are you saving some for me?
Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):

I agree with that entirely. It leaves a bad impression. Premium passengers have a right to expect a higher standard of service.

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
Main Courses:
- Grilled fillet of beef accompanied by ginger carrot puree, blanched broccoli and cherry tomato

That looks delicious!

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
steward: ‘Close your window, the sun is disturbing other passengers!’’
me: ‘you could have said sir and please… but fine, I’ll do it.’

If there's one thing I hate, it's being told to close the window shades. Being told to do so in such a manner makes it worse.

Thank you once again for posting this trip report. I really enjoyed reading it. I like the look of SN's new business class seat - the dark wood panelling makes it look very classy. Well done SN!

I am flying SN Business from BRU to JFK in October and this gives me a good idea on what to expect. I will see if the ground service is any better. With SN exclusive network in Africa, SN ground staffs should be well trained in priority boarding on an international flight. Anyway, I am glad that the crews seem to be in a better mood.

About non-rev, I think the number one rule is to be discrete and don't care if you are the pilot's partner or children. Since you are representing the company to certain extent, being low profile is always a good thing. Regarding children in cockpits, the Aeroflot case is a bit extreme, and I am sure the pilots will not let her daughter touching any button during those critical stage of the flights. US airlines are pretty strict when it comes to visitors in the cockpit and Asian and European airlines are a bit less paranoid, but I really don't like how the F/As react to you, when you notice that pilot's daughter and wife entering the cockpit. Just shut the curtain if you don't want people to notice. It is an option.

Breakfast service is always tricky on these short transatlantic flights, and serving it an hour prior to arrival makes perfect sense, but the crews are just not as prepared as they should. The flight is still sort of new so it will take times.

Nonetheless the meals look good and I look forward to my flight in October.

Carfield

Hi Photoshooter

Thanks for the excellent report, I greatly enjoyed that.

Brussels Airlines are a strange airline. You don't really hear much about them but their service actually looks rather nice. The food on both sectors for sure looks very good, especially the desserts.

The seat is the same one Swiss has installed in its A330-300, right?

Good to see you also managed to go to the Intrepid museum. Such an excellent place to go if you're interested in aviation.

Thanks for posting in any case!

Cheers,
William

Hi Niek

Great report, thanks for sharing it with us.
SN's new hard product looks very nice.
However still here and there some little details that could be worked on as you (and Petteri) said.
Let's hope it's been worked on by december.

Greetings
Marc

I couldn't agree more!

Indeed, I had the feeling that they could have done more preparations like the coffee/tea... They had to wait for that before serving breakfast. This is something you can do before serving. I'm sure the coffee will remain warm.

Yes I believe they are. Only the layout is a bit different and by the looks of it, I'd prefer SN's Business class. Just a pity SN can't have the crew of LX which are great in Business Class (which I've heard but not experienced yet  . )

Yes, I believe they ''stole'' the idea  . They installed it in the Hangars of Lufthansa at Malta. Thanks for your comment!

Thanks all and please leave a comment after reading!

Cheers, Niek.
