Introduction
After finally knowing the time, I would have holidays from study and work, I went on to the internet and started a search for possible destinations for a short weekend break in summer.
Generally the fares were quite high, but after looking for numerous destinations around Europe and Asia ( which just did not justify the high fares ), I became more and more interested in the United Arab Emirates. With the large amount of high quality hotels, but also offering many sights to see, I thought Dubai would be the perfect destination.
Soon afterwards I also found a decent airfare to DXB with the good old Lufthansa and Austrian. Two airlines I never flew middle/longhaul flights with.
My routing would be as follow:

FRAVIE on a Lufthansa A321
VIEDXB on an Austrian B763
DXBVIE on a Lufthansa A346

Lets know fastforward a couple of weeks: As you probably all know by now, Austrian Airlines transfered all of their aircraft, except for one single Boeing 777 to Tyrolean Airways, which operates a lot cheaper under their AOC. Regarding this change, a lot of the cockpit crews went to other airlines or just retired, as the salaries within the new operation are by far not as high as they used to be with Austrian before.
Therefor, there was suddenly a shortage of aircrew and a part of the B763 fleet was also involved.
So one day I got a message from the airline informing me about a schedule change of about an hour on the VIEDXB sector.
After having a look into my reservation, it became clear that my flight now would be operated by an LH A340-300.
Lufthansa operating widebodys out of VIE??? That sounds like something interesting and definately looking forward to it.
The B763 can always be catched for a low amount of money with BA.
So after my flight moved back an hour, my connection from FRA was now way too early and I gave Expedia a call, if it is possible to rebook me onto a later flight to VIE.
After checking, I got a call back some 10 minutes after my request confirming me, that I would now be on the later flight to VIE, which as bonus is operated by Austrian Airlines....sorry, Tyrolean Airways.
A week or so before my date of travel, I had another look into my reservation, and my preselected seat on the A346 shows " cancelled ". Soon I saw, that I had another equipment change and my nightflight back home from DXB would now be operated by the good old Boeing 744, the one and only Queen of the sky.
It didnt really bother me, as I always like flying on the 747, and as more and more airlines start to retire them, its good to catch another flight on it.
During OLCI, Austrian offered me lounge access to their business lounge in the new VIE terminal for only 12 €, which seemed like a sweet deal to me.
Later I found out that they are running some sort of summer promotion, where they offer this discounted entry fare.
When telling about my travelplan to the HEL based a-netter Markku (makeree), he told me also planning a trip down to the Emirates, but not knowing the exact dates yet.
Some weeks later it turned out to be the same date as I will be there, so we agreed on a meeting, but more on that later.
Another meeting was scheduled for the day of my return in FRA, where I'm gonna meet Daniel for a spotting and aviation talk session.
After talking already way to much, lets now start with the actual travel itself.

Friday, 27.07:
After a more or less restfull night, my alarm clock threw me out of the bed at the almost Markus like time at 04:45.
My dad was so kind enough to gave me a lift to tram station close to his work. Thanks again for that!
After buying a ticket, which was a total rip-off for 2,40€ for a 10mins ride, I got on to the next available train to Saarbrücken Main station, from where I caught the Intercity to Mannheim, where I connected to an ICE to Frankfurt Airport Fernbahnhof.
There is also a direct train to FRA airport from my town, but it is a regional train and this time they combination of faster and a lot more comfortable trains was actually cheaper and more convenient for me.

As there was not much to see landside anymore I went to the B gates security check, where I was through in only about 3 mins and then went to my gate where I got a coffee from the free LH machines and used the free wifi for a bit.

My flight for today

Anyway, soon enough a boarding call was made and first Star Alliance Gold, Business as well as families were invited to board and after that me and the other lowly economy passengers were allowed to board the bus to the remote apron position, where our Airbus was parked.
As always in Frankfurt the busride to the plane was very scenic and I saw many interesting birds like the MEA A320.

VIENNA:

As this is my first time in Vienna Airport as well as the first time in the brand new skylink terminal, which was opened only about a month before my visit.
The terminal itself is huge and very airy, I think it is way too large for the operations of Austrian airlines, but anyway nice to enjoy this new Terminal.

During OLCI, OS offered me lounge access to their new Austrian Business lounge for a very good value, so I booked this so called "RedLounge" service for my 2 hour lay over in VIE.
The lounge itself wasnt that big, but as there were hardly no people at all in it, it was a very pleasent stay.
The austrian food, made by DO&CO was delicous and was washed down with a couple "gabriels".
Also the views were quite good for watching planes.

Boarding was called quite soon and I made my way down the jetway into the Hairdryer Airbus.

Soon the cabin filled with the smell of some hot food, and before i knew it, they already started serving the lunch.
On offer was Chicken with rice and vegies as well as a pasta mix.
When arriving at my raw, the F/A was very apologic and told me that they unfortunately only have the pasta left, no problem for me, as this would have been my choice anyway.
As a side, a small greek salad was on the tray and for desert an amazing apple strudel.

The service on this flight was really top notch and the F/A were really kind and tried to make the stay onboard as enjoyable as possible.
I also had quite an interesting talk to one of the F/A.
He told me that these LH flights for OS are always operated by MUC based crew and they would be deadheading to VIE, then flying to DXB, having one night there before flying back on duty to VIE and then directly back to MUC.
About an hour before scheduled landing another snack was served, this time a chocolate bar and another drink run.

Soon enough the decent started and we then landed at DXB airport, where we taxied about 15mins to a remote parking position.

When the door was opened a wave of hot air floated in and welcomed me in the Emirates.
After a short bus ride we were dropped at the baggage claim area, where my suitcase was appearing about 5mins later.
Imigration was also a breeze, the agent on duty only asked in which hotel I was staying and then my passport was stamped: So easy!!! Hear that USA?

WELCOME TO DUBAI

As my hotel was located in the area close to the Mall of Emirates in Jumeirah, the easiest way to get there, was to take the red line of the Dubai Metro.
Tickets were cheap as chips and soon a metro arrived and I got onto it for the 40mins ride to my hotel.
Already the metro ride was an adventure, as there were so many different cultures on the train and it really fitted very well.
After the ride it was only about a 5mins walk to my hotel, where I was greeted by a very friendly Asian staff.
She told me immediatly that I got upgraded to an executive room and another member of the staff would be arriving soon to show me all the exclusive parts of the hotel I was allowed to use. Sometimes the Accor status is not bad at all.
Ahmed, another staff member showed me first my room, before showing me the lounge I was allowed to use as well as the Spa and restaurant area.
After droping all my stuff, I first went to the lounge for a couple of drinks and then just went to the room, which was amazing.

Again I took the metro to get there, as it was the most convenient way.

After another time in this mall I went to my hotel to pick up my luggage and making my way to Deira, where I first had a look around, by using several taxis again and then let me drive to the Radisson Blu Deira Creek, where I was scheduled to meet fellow a-net member Markku.
The Radisson is another very recomandable place as it offers no less than 16! restaurants.
We settled for THE PUB in the end, where we had an excellent dinner with some beer from the tab and of course a lot of aviation talk.!

Thanks again for the Fazer Choc and the meeting Markku, was a pleasure to meet you again!
At around 10:30 in the evening I walked back to Union Square to catch the Metro to the Terminal 1 of Dubai Airport.

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/2875/dscn2407mh.jpg

After another 10mins on the train I arrived there and made my way to the check in area.
Strangely the LH group airlines have a seperated check in area and the passengers do not have to go through a luggage screen before entering the terminal. Does anyone know the reason for this?

Luckily there were no queues at all and I got checked in in around 5mins and then went to the security which was a breeze.

http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/1861/dscn2411u.jpg

Airside I spent my last AED at MCD and then just relaxed until boarding started.
Boarding there was quite interesting, as the BP was checked before the boarding area and at the announced boarding time the door to the gangway was just opened.
So no priority boarding at all for status members, hear that Jonas?  http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/5311/dscn2413t.jpg

A lot of people around the boarding area got excited when they saw, that our flight was to be operated by a Jumbo. The 747 still attractes so many people, and of course I am also always delighted to fly on one of them.

Anyway I soon entered the Queen of the skies and made my way to the back of the plane where I was greated by a young blonde, quite attractive F/A, which for sure would have been exactly Markus' taste.

Boarding was soon finished and we began our journey back home to good old Germany.

The flight time was anounced as a quick 6h15, and we would make up our 20mins delay.
After a hot towel service and a drink run, the crew served a choice of either a roast beef sandwich or a sandwich which cream cheese.
I went for the cream cheese one and it tasted allright.

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/2734/dscn2432c.jpg

After this light snack, I started to watch a concert of Adele in Royal Albert Hall, but after like 5mins just above Kuwait, I crashed and slept until we were nearly in Bavaria again.

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/34/dscn2434km.jpg

I woke up just in time for the breakfast, where a choice of scrambled egg and Pancakes were available.
I chose the egg, and it was served with a breakfast sausage, a hot tomato and some mushrooms.
Also we were given fresh bread, some jam and a cherry yoghurt.
I also went for a coffee and an orange juice to go with the meal.

Conclusion:
Austrian shorthaul was exactly as expected: A snack and a drink served and good views of the rural areas.
Also nice to log an A321-100.
Lufthansa longhaul was good on both flights and the crew was always friendly and tried to make the flight pleasent.
Dubai is an excellent destination, but next time I will probaly head there, when there is no Ramadan, as it is quite stressful, when youre not part of that religion.

Thanks a lot again for the two meetings, was a great pleasure.

Also thanks everyone for reading this report about my journey to Dubai.
Comments and questions are very appreciated as usual.

Cheers,
Johannes

excellent report !

glad you had a great time !

the best time to visit Dubai is between November and april , when the humidity is low and the heat is bearable !

tourism in ramadan could be difficult for tourists who dont fast.

Hi Johannes,

interesting report about your Dubai trip! I certainly read with special interesting after visiting Dubai again earlier this year.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
With the large amount of high quality hotels, but also offering many sights to see, I thought Dubai would be the perfect destination.

I can only agree, Dubai is one of my favorite destinations.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
After having a look into my reservation, it became clear that my flight now would be operated by an LH A340-300.
Lufthansa operating widebodys out of VIE??? That sounds like something interesting and definately looking forward to it.
The B763 can always be catched for a low amount of money with BA.

Well, I'd have preferred the OS 763.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
A week or so before my date of travel, I had another look into my reservation, and my preselected seat on the A346 shows " cancelled ". Soon I saw, that I had another equipment change and my nightflight back home from DXB would now be operated by the good old Boeing 744, the one and only Queen of the sky.
It didnt really bother me, as I always like flying on the 747, and as more and more airlines start to retire them, its good to catch another flight on it.

Good news indeed!

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
During OLCI, Austrian offered me lounge access to their business lounge in the new VIE terminal for only 12 €, which seemed like a sweet deal to me.

Sounds okay considering that you could enjoy DO&CO food there.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
On offer was Chicken with rice and vegies as well as a pasta mix.
When arriving at my raw, the F/A was very apologic and told me that they unfortunately only have the pasta left, no problem for me, as this would have been my choice anyway.
As a side, a small greek salad was on the tray and for desert an amazing apple strudel.

That meal looks fine!

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
Imigration was also a breeze, the agent on duty only asked in which hotel I was staying and then my passport was stamped: So easy!!! Hear that USA?

The immigration process is indeed quick and easy, but when I arrived at T1 last time, I was stuck in queue for an hour.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
I had prebooked my visit at Burj Khalifa and it was fantastic!

Visiting Burj Khalifa is a must, I can only recommend it to anyone.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
The view was just amazing, but I think they easily could have moved the viewing platform about 100-200m higher.

Well, it's still the third highest observation deck in the world.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
Maggi

Meals can't start without Maggi soup??? No thanks!

Hello Johannes,

good to see another TR online today. I have enjoyed reading it.

I have also started to get up at his times. The next very early wake up will be for me on August 23rd.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):

The machines are really great. It is very good, that the passengers don´t have to get their coffee somewhere else.

Baileys has become a very popular choice for A.netters. Are you also starting with it   ?

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):

Was the snack enough for you ?

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):

I sure also have to visit the Burj Khalifa, if I would be in Dubai anytime soon.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
I was scheduled to meet fellow a-net member Markku.

It is always great to meet Markku. The first time I had a meeting with him was in April. You already know the story  .

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
I chose the egg, and it was served with a breakfast sausage, a hot tomato and some mushrooms.

The omelette, sausage and tomato look tasty. How were the mushrooms ?

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):

You are very welcome. It is always very good to meet fellow A.netters.

I enjoyed the pictures you have taken in Dubai. Keep up the good work.

See you soon.

Nice report Johannes! Sorry to hear you missed out on the Austrian 767. I flew an OS 767 PVG-VIE a few years ago - service and food was brilliant.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):

Great value! I think BD charged GBP 25 or 30 for access to their LHR lounge

The austrian food, made by DO&CO was delicous and was washed down with a couple "gabriels".

Quoting Luxair747SP (Reply 1):
There is also a direct train to FRA airport from my town, but it is a regional train and this time they combination of faster and a lot more comfortable trains was actually cheaper and more convenient for me.

How much did you pay for the train ticket? When I visited Daniel in Mannheim, the 30 min ICE ride cost a whopping €23 which is quite the ripoff.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Reply 2):

That's really one of the most well presented starters/dessert I've ever seen in Economy Class. LH are really making an effort here to deliver a good product.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Reply 2):
I opted for a typical after dinner drink in form of Baileys on ice.

Very nice of them to offer that, as not many airlines seem to do in Economy these days. Did you go for coffee with that?

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
So no priority boarding at all for status members, hear that Jonas?

Well Priority Boarding is stated as a perk but only offered "where available". Sadly I don't recall ever having it offered on any of my more recent flights, mainly TAP and SAS. LH Group however seem to be more strict about it

HaHa, what a shame these seats are (especially compared to EK F-Suites!). LH needs most urgently one standard First Class hardware (and not several different seats and configurations).

Quoting Luxair747SP (Reply 2):
Soon the cabin filled with the smell of some hot food, and before i knew it, they already started serving the lunch.

Very, very strange... I would have expected DO&CO AUA-meals and trays. But these meals (and even the tray & dinnerware) are from Lufthansa/LSG Catering! Any idea why?

Just compare to the "original" DO&CO catering: http://www.airlinemeals.net/img/lightboxmeals/4696RIMG0074.JPG

Hi Johannes,

I remember you telling me about this planned trip, great to read all about it here.

A very interesting set up with your flights, catching LH out of VIE and then logging the 747 on the return leg. The service & meals on LH look as a solid as ever. I've never been to Vienna, but I don't like the look of the new terminal, too modern and cold for my taste.

As for Dubai, well you fitted so much into your stay. Love the shots from the Burj Khalifa and as for your hotel room, wow, it's out of this world!

I'm honoured to see you using the laptop bag! Gret suitcase by the way, I love distinctive ones that stand out.

Happy flying

Hola Johannes!

Very nice TR on your Dubai adventure.

Nice to see the pics from the VIE lounge, a real bargain for 12€... nice that you got this great deal and could experience this new facility.

Great to hit both the A343 and the B747, two great aircraft and worth flying, although I prefer the Boeing, harder to get these days.

Although Dubai looks an interesting place is not the kind of place that is top on my list, especially in summer with those large above 40º temperatures, prefer to go there in 'winter'.

Thanks for the report, liked your hotel room, nice area.

Salut!

Roger

interesting report about your Dubai trip! I certainly read with special interesting after visiting Dubai again earlier this year.

THanks!!

good to see another TR online today. I have enjoyed reading it.

Thanks a lot. Glas you enjoyed it.

Hi Gab,

Nice report Johannes! Sorry to hear you missed out on the Austrian 767. I flew an OS 767 PVG-VIE a few years ago - service and food was brilliant.

I will have to fly on one for sure in the future.

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 6):
Lounge looks nice. Glad you enjoyed the "Gabriel's"!

Still the best drink around.

Hi Jonas,

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 7):
How much did you pay for the train ticket? When I visited Daniel in Mannheim, the 30 min ICE ride cost a whopping €23 which is quite the ripoff.

I think return was about 55 euros. still expensive.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 7):
That's really one of the most well presented starters/dessert I've ever seen in Economy Class. LH are really making an effort here to deliver a good product.

Tasted also good.

Was my thought too!

Nice report, and I'm glad to see you had some nice flights with LH and OS/VO.
Dubai sure is a nice destination, I was there last year, flying on the now canceled SK CPH-DXB route.

Thanks!

You didn't go skiing?

Not this time, maybe the next time I'm around

Yes the new terminal is a huge improvement.

Yeah luckily got one.

OS and LH looks amazing and the food looks simply delicious! Glad to see you flew on the A343 and B744, both my favourites! Nice pictures in Dubai too! Sad that you could not come over to SIN for a short trip instead, maybe next time!

I will try to find decent airfares next year

Hi 777Man,

Great to see that the new terminal in VIE is finally open!

Indeed, it was about time.

Quoting The777Man (Reply 13):
Too bad you didn't get to fly OS long-haul but ended up on LH instead. LH looks good but it seems the point of choosing OS is to experience them and not LH.

That is true, but well...

Hi Johannes

Thanks for the detailed report on your trip with Austrian/Lufthansa. Those are some really nice pictures you took. What strikes me though is that on the Vienna to Dubai flight catering and all that is Lufthansa branded. I mean, for all practical purposes the flight was a wet lease. Or wasn't it?

Thanks for posting!

Cheers,
William

as per my understanding Manching was even in the close to be the new munich airport, as they had already the 2 runways and only the terminals have to be build... but finally its to far away from downtown and hence it was not elected.

Hey!

Cool report.

D-AIMG flew me for my first visit to Asia (MUC-SIN) back then PTV´s on LH were unthinkable

Cool shots from Dubai, I am preparing a little stop-over in December on my way to SIN, I arrive Dec 23rd at midnight so I have 23 and 24th to explore Dubai before embarking on the next flight to SIN on the 25th at 2am... think I will need lots of coffee!

That gold ATM is just too hilarious! ¨Honey, I am short on Gold, let me withdraw some more¨

I think, therefore I don´t fly Ryanair.

Excellent Johannes,

great reporting, and plenty of good photos. Dubai is high on my bucket list, and you showed how spectacular it can be, even in a very short visit.

Strange events there with Austrian and LH, still at least you got there! I'd go for a 767 sooner rather than later, as even BA will phase them out eventually!

Service looks good, and EUR12 for a lounge visit is an excellent price for a PAYG visit!

Thanks again

Lufthansa operating widebodys out of VIE??? That sounds like something interesting and definately looking forward to it.

It feels like a fifth freedom flight, though it’s not alike.

Absolutely. Once you recall the taste of flying the Queen, you want even more.

During OLCI, Austrian offered me lounge access to their business lounge in the new VIE terminal for only 12 €, which seemed like a sweet deal to me.
