Time for my annual trip for 2012, this time I had decided to try the new Sri Lankan business class product as it looked very good, and I had heard many good things about their cabin crew. Added to this was the best reason to fly them, they are by far the cheapest option to Europe from Asia.
Another airline I wanted to try was Turkish Airlines on longhaul, again they have recently upgraded their J class product, and again they had a ridiculously cheap airfare from JFK to KUL. So again it was a no brainer.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y22/chrisrad/TRIP2012.gif
My actual flights were
MEL-SIN-BKKJQ
BKK-CMB-FRAUL
FRA-TXL-BUDAB
BUD-FRALH
FRA-JFKSQ
HPN-MCOB6
TPA-JFKB6
JFK-ISTTK
IST-KULMH
KUL-BWN-MELBI

As most Australians know we are completely ripped off by airlines when it comes to Business class prices, so I usually make my way out of Australia on a cheap deal with JQ, then piece together my own itinerary from Asia. It usually works out to be less than half what I would have to pay if I bought the ticket in Australia.
I will not include the short haul economy flights as there is not much to photograph, or report on. I also won’t report on the SQ FRA-JFK A380 flight as this was a reward ticket in Y class, and it was a complete dissapointment, crew didn’t want to be there, no smiles or warmth.
Jetstar JQ9
MEL-SIN – Business Class
A332
Jetstar business class is far from a real “business class” but more of a good premium economy product, however saying that for $500 I can’t complain.
No Qantas club on the cheap fares, however you don’t miss much.

No photos of the flight to BKK, but I will say the aircraft was in disgusting condition, I have never been on such a dirty plane, the A320 had cloth seats, that were all stained, no headrest covers and the seats were all grey were peoples greasy heads were. Did I mention the overwhelming urine smell?

SriLankan Airlines – Business Class
Looking for the cheapest J class fares I stumbled across UL’s ultra cheap fares, and I thought – It can’t be any worse than AirAsiaX? Then just as I was looking at the fares and destinations they announced they were upgrading their J class cabins to the new lie-flat seats, which pretty much sealed the deal. However there was still the risk I would get the old cradle seat, but a few facebook messages confirmed that I indeed would be getting the new seats on our flights.
I thought until this point I had flown with the best cabin crew over the years with MH and SQ, however what I was to experience hands down blew them both out of the water. On the BKK-CMB sector especially the crew were out of this world, personally speaking to each passenger during boarding as if they were a close friend you didn’t see for a long time. We were shown how to use the new IFE system individually. Small touches like turning the SriLankan logo on the glassware to face you when they put down the drink (SQ F class hello??). At one point the cabin crew asked me if it was my first time flying SriLakan and what I thought, I said yes this is my first time, and you are outdoing Singapore and Malaysian. I could see the joy in their face when I told them that.
Meal service was so well co-ordinated it was ridiculous. As soon as your fork was put down cabin crew would appear to clear your plate. You were never left waiting. Food was also excellent, portions were just right for such late flights.
The new seat is great, wide and comfortable leather. Though when you put the seat into recline mode it lifts up the seat quite high, you feel almost in the ceiling of the aircraft. The bed mode is great, a true lie flat, you get 2 large pillows which were very nice. I managed to sleep quite a few hours on the CMB-FRA sector.
Overall I had the least expectations of this flight and it turned out to be the best on the entire trip!

Connection with AirBerlin FRA-TXL-BUD, which I could write another page about for how ridiculous it was.
One week in Budapest and it was time to leave to the USA, as I had a pile of SQ KrisFlyer points I decided to get award ticket on their FRA-JFK flight on the A380, as I had not flown one yet. We flew out of Budapest the night before with LH, as the SQ flight leaves too early in the morning to be able to connect.
Checking in at FRA, there were hardly any people checking in for this flight, it seemed most were coming direct from SIN going onwards. The flight was absolutely full, we got their oldest A380 – SKA, I must say I was disappointed in the condition of the aircraft, dirty, panels broken in the toilets, scuff marks everywhere. Not sure if SQ is slipping with maintenance or the A380 is not ageing well?
The crew were very lacklustre, no smiles or warmth. They hardly wanted to be there, everything was done efficiently and robotically with nothing more. Admittedly I was flying economy, however I had thought regardless of class they would have been friendlier that they were.
Food was well, economy food, not great but not too bad either.
Three days in New York and three days in Orlando, we had some good flights with JetBlue going down and up, I always find them a reliable consistent choice, and with their generous legroom I almost always use them on my travels, however at Westchester Airport check-in staff were being a little bit pedantic, there were 3 of us travelling together, so we distributed our weight as best we could (we forgot to take our portable weighing device) as it turned out our suitcases were 51 pounds, 49 pounds and 49 pounds. Mine was the 51 pounds, they insisted I take something out of mine and put it in another suitcase… I gave them the look of death, so I took some shoes out and put it into another, so now mine was 49 and the other suitcase was 51…….”sorry sir you will have to move something else…” getting annoyed I said what difference does it make? We are all travelling together and our total weight is still below your allowance? One of the check-in agents started going on about the “weight and balance” of the aircraft, I looked up and said “1 pound”??? Anyway they finally let us go, but it didn’t leave a very good impression.
Back at JFK, we had our Turkish Airlines flight JFK-IST-KUL, which Malaysia Airlines operates the IST-KUL sector, this was another ridiculously cheap airfare, that was almost as much as some other airlines Y class fares. Having heard positive reviews of TK I was eager to try them.
JFK was a zoo at this time of the day, we were checked in by a fellow a.netter - Allister Johnson – who somehow recognised my name! Small world!
Turkish were good without being exceptional, their boarding was chaotic I’m not sure why all the cabin crew were running around as if they had 30 seconds to prepare the aircraft.
Cabin crew were pleasant enough, except the leading stewardess told us off for taking photos, and that we shouldn’t be taking photos of the cabin…. First time in 7 years of doing trip reports I have been told this, anyway I explained to her I was taking photos of the food only not the cabin crew, she calmed down after that. I asked the flight attendant serving my side and she had no problems with me taking photos.
Food is where TK excels, huge variety and excellent quality. Definitely not a chance you would go hungry. I’m not sure what having the Chef on board really does, it’s not as if he can cook in the galley. It would almost seem he is another crew member just dressed in a chef uniform.

Hey there nice report on UL. Im glad they seem to have upped their game. Sure looks like a nice product with the crew ( who I always found good ) and the catering. Wasnt so sure about the colours of the new seats but have to say I quite like them now. Its a big change from the previous ones.

Anyway thanks for the read and interesting to hear your comments on SQ . They seem to get mixed reports these days which is a shame.

Your comments on TK are pretty much what most are saying including friends of mine who use them alot. Deffo cant beat them on the catering . Glad the photo issue wasnt soured. I never had any issues of taking pics of TK over the years .

Turkish use the Alitalia lounge at JFK, which is not too bad. Food selections are quite limited with prepacked wraps and sandwiches in a fridge. The best part was the real espresso machine, after 1 week in the US, this was my first real coffee.

Almost at Istanbul
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y22/chrisrad/DSC06914-1.jpg
One night stop in Istanbul
Our next flight was with Malaysia Airlines, being the staunch defender of MH in the past, this was probably one of my worst flights with them. Cabin crew were a huge let down, they were much more like SQ
Usually I am unable to fault MH crew for the warmth and genuine interaction with passengers, but on this flight all of this was missing, they all seemed grumpy, and disinterested. Compounded by the fact the seats by today’s standards are not that great. Sure there are plenty of airlines still with lie-flat slopers, but most are upgrading to proper lie flats.
Catering was still at MH’s usually high standard, and the aircraft was in good condition despite being the oldest in the fleet, 9M-MRA is the world recording breaking 772, there is a plaque mounted near 1st door.

Royal Brunei is another small airline that I think deserves more credit than they are given, their fares are ridiculously cheap most of the time. Good food and good crew.

Great trip report mate. The new Sri Lankan Business Class looks awesome, totally different and a giant leap foward from those old, worn and torn versions. It it was great to see those other trip reports, especially the Turkish Airlines. Those Business Class cabins onboard TK's 777 look like First class and the lavatories look like spas, they're humungous!!

Thanks for an excellent report involving many airlines that are not commonly reported.

First, Jetstar looks okay but surprised that they cut the proper pre-arrival refreshment service.

Second, the new business class seats of Sri Lankan Airlines look amazing and the service looks good. I guess they have changed how they served entree now and no more trolley service - sort of like traditional first class, where you pick and choose components. At least they are individually plated in the galley.

Third, Royal Brunei is quite an interesting airline and the meals look very well prepared. There are many courses which I like... the pre-arrival meal looks a bit weak, but at least there are some choices.

Thanks for sharing again,
Carfield

Thank you very much for sharing this incredible trip with us!

Had to re-check in as it’s just too difficult for Jetstar to check your bag in all the way to your final destination, even when flying the same airline…

This is strange... Was it on two different tickets? If it was only one it would be incredible... i.e. if someone is not allowed to enter Singapore...

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
Connection with AirBerlin FRA-TXL-BUD, which I could write another page about for how ridiculous it was.

Did you had a bad experience? That's interesting. Mostly AB gets quite ok reviews, however I do admit TXL is just not suitable for transfers (will get better with BER) and you usually take a bus from/to the plane. Would be interested to know what went wrong from a person out of Europe which doesn't travelled with AB before...

That's cool. How did you got aware they were offering this? Is this only for C-Class passengers or also for Eco? were meals and transfer included? Did you had to organize this before or was it sorted out at the airport. Seems they're doing well in this regards.

GREAT TR, as promised!

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
Jetstar business class is far from a real “business class” but more of a good premium economy product

I don't agree- it might not be an "Asian" Business Class standard, but food and service seems to be en par with BusinessClass in North America or even Europe! Way ahead of Scoot and AirAsiaX with their standard cheap Economy meals and buy on board philosophy... That's what I call Premium Economy- and thats the reason, in my opinion, why Scoot always be 2nd after Jetstar (read this SQ).

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
I thought until this point I had flown with the best cabin crew over the years with MH and SQ, however what I was to experience hands down blew them both out of the water.

Was it just luck or is this the normal UL standard? Well, at least I can say the hospitality of SriLankans is outstanding!

For sure, the transfer in TXL must have been horrible... But what was wrong? And don't forget, AB is a low-cost airline with frills and not a full-service OneWorld carrier!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 1):
The flight was absolutely full, we got their oldest A380 – SKA, I must say I was disappointed in the condition of the aircraft, dirty, panels broken in the toilets, scuff marks everywhere. Not sure if SQ is slipping with maintenance or the A380 is not ageing well?

True, flew this year the same route. Very sad to see their A380 in such a miserable state!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 1):
Food was well, economy food, not great but not too bad either.

Strange, normally the SQ food ex FRA produced by Lufthansa LSG is outstanding (I was never complaining).

Quoting OA260 (Reply 1):
Malaysia Airlines operates the IST-KUL sector, this was another ridiculously cheap airfare, that was almost as much as some other airlines Y class fares.

You might have a look on EgyptAir, or even Mahan Air, as there C-fares from Asia to Europe are also very, very competitive!

Amazing report of your travels! Great photos as well.

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
On the BKK-CMB sector especially the crew were out of this world, personally speaking to each passenger during boarding as if they were a close friend you didn’t see for a long time. We were shown how to use the new IFE system individually. Small touches like turning the SriLankan logo on the glassware to face you when they put down the drink (SQ F class hello??). At one point the cabin crew asked me if it was my first time flying SriLakan and what I thought, I said yes this is my first time, and you are outdoing Singapore and Malaysian.

How incredible! Sounds like SriLankan does a great job focusing on attention to detail!

Food looks great on TK too - that menu is huge!

Best,

Matthew (767747)

I was expecting a sandwich or something similar, not a packet of pringles. Last year when I flew the direct MEL-BKK we got 2 hot meal services. Perhaps as SIN is almost 2 hours shorter.....

The flight was relatively short at 5.45 hours, so I suppose it would be hard to justify 2 full meal services? I might add that this flight was only about $200 more than AirAsiaX, you couldn't even begin to compare the two!

It was on 2 seperate bookings, as their website would not let me book the BKK tag on when I made the booking. However in saying that, I can't see any difference, they would have just needed tag the bags to the final destination, considering it was the same 3 pax travelling on the same airline.

Check-in was fine, no issues as we had our bags checked-through from SriLankan, the inbound flight to FRA was late, as we only had a 40 min connection in TXL this was stressful. We arrived in TXL just as the BUD flight was meant to leave, they announced on the flight that passengers connected to BUD should proceed immediately to the gate....
Yes well except the gate was in another bloddy terminal! We had to run like idiots out of the terminal around the airport to the correct terminal, of course when we got there, the worlds slowest security line was infront of us. Finally we get to the gate and there was no one there, except the gate agent, he looks at us in suprise and says "Frankfurt?" I said yes, we just arrived can we please be allowed to board, thank god I could see passengers still waiting to board the aircraft on the ramp, so we ran out to the aircraft and made it! Mind you I was already about to have a heart attack from running so much, we were assigned the front row and my bag would not fit in the overhead, the rather disinterested head flight attendant didn't even care I was just holding it in my lap! So I thought fine, if you want to have that attitude and not help, I'll sit there with my bag in the exit row... she still didn't react, it was only until the flight attendant from the rear of the aircraft came along and saw it and suggested I put it in Row 5 which had all the bags that wouldn't fit.....
I think it left a bad taste in my mouth because originally I was booked on Malev on a direct flight but I lost the ticket when they stopped flying and LH was just too much money to justify!

Sorry for the bad experience... But as I already wrote in reply 7, the situation at Berlin-Tegel (after the failed opening of Berlin-International) is a mess! Nevertheless, as TXL is AirBerlin's home-base and premium gateway, AB should improve the transfer and connection system!
Just for info, row 1 on Air Berlin is not an Exit row (due to the bulkhead in front)- nevertheless, all hand-luggage have to be stowed away. So the attitude of the Senior Crew was not the best (to say at least)!

I think it left a bad taste in my mouth because originally I was booked on Malev on a direct flight but I lost the ticket when they stopped flying and LH was just too much money to justify!

Next time you may try http://wizzair.com - unfortunately, the only serve Frankfurt-Hahn (and not Frankfurt-International). Anyway, did you get a full refund of your MA ticket?!

Well in row 1 regardless there is no seat to put my bag underneath, and i can't leave it on the floor at the bulkhead! I was just amazed when she could clearly see I had no where to put it she just ignored me.

Yes the new Berlin should have opened, it might have been another story, but the late inbound flight started the chain reaction.

I didn't get a refund, I paid with PayPal stupidly and it was just too difficult to get the money back so I just wrote it off.
The low cost airlines in this instance were no use to me, as they fly from Hahn as you point out. It was fly LH for 4 times the price, go via via with another airline with total travel time of 8 hours... or Air Berlin.

Hi Chrisrad,

Another outstanding J class trip report with an interesting group of airlines. Seems this trip was alot more positive compared to your previous one
AirAsiaX MEL-KUL J Class, SQ A345 SIN-LAX-EWR-SIN (by chrisrad Jul 19 2010 in Trip Reports)

JQ, Oman, AF, MA, TK, MH, D7 J Class To Europe (by chrisrad Sep 11 2011 in Trip Reports)

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
Jetstar JQ9
MEL-SIN – Business Class
A332

The 1st meal and dessert service looks outstanding particularly for a LCC pity about the second one. Hopefully this may change.
In addition I find it quite silly that weren't able to check your bags all the way through to BKK.

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
Overall I had the least expectations of this flight and it turned out to be the best on the entire trip!
BKK-CMB-FRA

As everyone one has mentioned so far, the new UL J class cabin along with the catering looks awesome. How would you compare this to your experience with Oman Air?

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
I must say I was disappointed in the condition of the aircraft, dirty, panels broken in the toilets, scuff marks everywhere. Not sure if SQ is slipping with maintenance or the A380 is not ageing well?
The crew were very lacklustre, no smiles or warmth. They hardly wanted to be there, everything was done efficiently and robotically with nothing more. Admittedly I was flying economy, however I had thought regardless of class they would have been friendlier that they were

hmm is it me or do you seem choose the wrong day to fly SQ :P

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
Food is where TK excels, huge variety and excellent quality. Definitely not a chance you would go hungry.

Wow tell me about. This is my type of airline

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
I’m not sure what having the Chef on board really does, it’s not as if he can cook in the galley. It would almost seem he is another crew member just dressed in a chef uniform

Perhaps, creating a perception if not a personal touch.

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
Our next flight was with Malaysia Airlines, being the staunch defender of MH in the past, this was probably one of my worst flights with them. Cabin crew were a huge let down, they were much more like SQ
Usually I am unable to fault MH crew for the warmth and genuine interaction with passengers, but on this flight all of this was missing, they all seemed grumpy, and disinterested

Oh dear, i'm guessing thats huge coming from you having read about your previous experiences with MH.

Quoting chrisrad (Thread starter):
Compounded by the fact the seats by today’s standards are not that great. Sure there are plenty of airlines still with lie-flat slopers, but most are upgrading to proper lie flats.

Hopefully, MH refurbish their 777 and longhaul A330 fleet and bring it line with the A380, once all 744s have been retired.

Hey Chris

Your report really stands out among many medicore ones here.

I really enjoyed seeing all the picture and some of your witty comments.

Yes Seat 2D (If I remember correctly) is definitely the best on Jetstar Int'l. Good to see they use fine bone China instead of cheap microwavable plastic food containers.

For Sri Lankan, great choice, couldn't agree more with you on the high level of services provided. Glad to see you have such a blast and your photos made me want to fly with them again soon! I've only flown the old product but their service was awesome, I even score a jumpseat landing inside the cockpit last year!

btw, I wonder what's the world record 9M-MRA holding?

Sam

I could read this report over and over again....Some large clusters of text which needed a bit of oomph like other J class reports here (with the conversations between crews and passengers) lol, but nevertheless what a whirlwind of a journey....

Sri Lankan looks stellar and as indicated by many on here is a hidden treasure. There were rumours they were to come to Toronto, not sure what happened.

Turkish, so much about them on here, it just makes reading those reports even more enjoyable rather than being repetitive.

Malaysian, wow, never expected them to be a let down, above all that they have been wonderful to you in the past. Perhaps a one time experience?

Royal Brunei, seems like Sri Lankan another hidden gem.

Jetstar, I thought the offerings on board are pretty much on par with business class on other carriers. The Amenity kit rocks as well as the photos on board.

Finally a bit upsetting about SQ and that you decided to not document them. A bit of a shame really. I was quite looking forward to seeing that report.

Thanks for taking us on this epic whirlwind of a journey, and the cabin crew pics are also very much appreciated. They are after all the ones that make or break an experience.

Great report Chris, although, I should know as I travelled as well.

Let me add in my two cents, Jetstar, for what they are, and for the right price, certainly offer a better service than what you would get in Y class on another carrier, but, the second "meal" service was, indeed, a bit of a let down, however perhaps it was this way cause of the shorter flight time.

The reason we were not checked in all the way to BKK was because it was on two seperate resevations, and most LCC's are quite stingy about that, but, no rush, things worked out, but was a pain entering the country then leaving.

Sri Lanka were great, no problem at all. Great service, good food and a fantastic hard product. I, however would be dissapointed if I got the old seats for the 10 hour flight to or from Europe - they are fine for the short hop to CMB.

Air Berlin, well, what can I say - Hopefully with the new Berlin airport things will be better, but, apart from the missing suitcase (which was recovered without issue the next day) we got there.

SQ... meh, Y class.. lets just leave it as that.

TK were pretty good, I agree with the chef. Does not really serve a purpose, but I gather its all about product differentation. Plenty of food (except pasta) and no chance of going hungry. Was a shame about the FA saying no photos, but, they later reversed the decision, and said photos of the foold was fine.

MH - well, certainly their standards are slipping. The 777 is in urgent need to an upgrade, or, if MH are going to retire them, then a full lie flat J product needs to be introduced to compete with the likes of TK, SQ ect serving similar flight times.

Royal Brunie - well, certainly very nice. The food was great, and good service - they are certainly an under rated product, and, despite being a dry airline, their loads to MEL seem to be great.

They are real chefs and work for the Austrian/Turkish catering firm Do&Co.

They can cook meals to order - for example breakfast as you wish with different egg styles.

I've found them always nice touch and handy to have onboard helping make customer special request possible.

Oman obviously takes the cake with their seats and food presentation, but SriLankans cabin crew were miles ahead.

Don't know, seems I picked the wrong day to fly MH as well! I think I was dissapointed at the condition of the aircraft. Like MH I expect a basic level of service from SQ as well, and it just wasn't there.

Somehow I doubt it, considering some airlines consider MEL a "regional" flight, I'm not quite sure I would call a 8 hour flight regional!

Jetstar really depends on the price, on sale it's fine but prices can creep up to Royal Brunei prices, then it's not worth it.

Quoting LAXintl (Reply 16):

Didn't seem to be any "any style" eggs on offer on our flight.

Well I took photos, but really what are you missing? Economy class as in any other aircraft and a one tray food service? Nothing else to really report on.

Thanks for the report! Nice to see what JQ offers in Business Class as I would be also flying them on SIN-PEK in Business Class too next month! The fare is a ridiculous S$300 one-way up, which is even cheaper than SQ economy! Anyone knows if the complimentary inflight snacks (other than the main meal) would be available anytime during the flight? Am I able to order anything off the inflight BOB menu?

They are worth it on sale, like my flight was only $500 AUD one way. The seat is fine for a day flight.

Could they have any more boring product on the A380? At least they finally have proper lie flats.
