Introduction
The U S of A, a great country IMHO. A country where everything is big, a country I have lived in for a year, a country I have visited many times (mostly in the summer) for vacation or other purposes. This year would be no exception. Visiting friends in Maine, Pennsylvania and Canada while enjoying my 4 week vacation from work.
Hello everyone and welcome to my 12th trip report featuring the beginning of my vacation to the USA/Canada!
It wasn’t until the 27th of May when my dad and I started looking for tickets. Booking was done, the same day, on delta.com (as my dad is a SkyMiles member). 6 flights for about 1200EUR p.p, not a very bad deal for the time of year and the date that we booked IMO.
There were a lot of different options for that price, so we eventually chose:
July 21: AMS-BOS // 11:10-13:00 // DL231 // A330-300
August 1: BOS-JFK // 12:00-13:17 // DL901 // A319
August 1: JFK-PHL // 16:10-17:28 // DL3544 // CRJ900 Pinnacle Airlines/DL Connection
August 8: PHL-LGA // 14:10-15:10 // DL4050 // CRJ100 Pinnacle Airlines/DL Connection
August 8: LGA-YYZ // 16:45-18:25 // DL7145 // B736 operated by WestJet
August 21: YYZ-AMS // 23:05-12:10 // DL9399 // B744 operated by KLM
A nice itinerary with all different types, and for me it will be the first time flying Delta longhaul and WestJet. This would also be a chance to catch the fairly “rare” B737-600 type.
This series will be split into 5 parts (due to the many pictures made):
Part 1: AMS-BOS
Part 2: BOS-JFK
Part 3: JFK-PHL
Part 4: PHL-LGA-YYZ
Part 5: YYZ-AMS
Every part will not only contain a report of the flight(s), but it will also be accompanied by many pictures of places I visited/things I did during my stay.
So sit back, relax and I hope you enjoy this report!

Getting to AMS
It was 05:30 on saturday morning the 21st of July when my alarm clock went off. Finally time to go on vacation, and to fly again I thought after a 4 hours sleep. After quickly getting my hair cut (by my dad) I headed for a shower and got ready to go.
As always, the transportation to the airport will be by train. So at 06:45 we headed towards Amsterdam Lelylaan train station. Once arriving there, just before 07:00, we bought are tickets at the ticket machine and headed up to platform 1.
The train arrived, right on time, at 07:07 and about 10 min later we arrived at Schiphol Plaza.
Check-in
As always I had checked in online the night before, so all I needed to do now was print my BP and drop my bag off. As I expected the check-in area to be quite busy I decided to use one of the machines located on the ground floor. 5 minutes later the machine successfully spit my BP out.
We then headed upstairs to the check-in area to drop our bags off. Once arriving to our designated row it was my turn right away. I was greeted by a friendly agent (who immediately asked which perfume I had on as she thought I smelled good) and my bag was checked in within 5 min.
Passport Control
We headed straight towards passport control, which wasn’t busy at all, and were through in no time. As I have a sister working at one of the restaurants on the schengen side, and we had enough time to spare, we decided to head over there and give her a visit.
That means going through passport control again to get to the schengen side. Once again there was no line, and after explaining why we were heading to the “wrong” side we were allowed through but, advised to head back on time as there can be long lines at passport control (I have seen how long those lines can be during previous visits at AMS).
After going through security we walked over to the Mediterranean Sandwich Bar, greeted my sister, and had some breakfast. I went for the Egg/Bacon Panini with a nice and fresh grapefruit juice:
Spotting @ AMS
We said goodbye to my sister and headed back over to the non-schengen side, but before doing that I took a picture of this Arkefly 767 being towed from its gate heading to some place much more sunny:
Once arriving at passport control, where there barely was a line, we decided to try one of the many self service machines. After scanning my passport and looking into the camera, I was let through. As there still was quite some time before boarding began, we looked around at some of the many shops. I also took a little look at the movements outside, like this DL 767 getting ready for its flight back across the pond:
This picture clearly shows the big presence Delta has at AMS each day:
After exchanging some EUR into $$$, buying the newest Airliner World and Airports of the World magazine, we headed towards our gate: E17. Before arriving at our gate I saw this beautiful tri-holer getting ready for its flight to HAV:
Once arriving at our gate, I took a quick picture of our aircraft. N820NW, a former NW aircraft delivered in 2007, will be doing the honors for me on this flight:
Security + Boarding
Soon enough security opened at 09:20:
We waited for a little while before joining the line. After waiting for about 10 minutes it was our turn, so one of the many security guards approached us, took our passports, and asked us to stand and wait at one of the many high tables. The guard scanned our passports into the computer, and then came back and asked us the usual questions. After answering all of them, we both got the usual small pink sticker on the back of our passports and let through to the screening process.
I waited for about 5 minutes before putting my carry-on on the x-ray belt and walking into the screening machine. After putting my hands up, the machine screened me and I was let through and had now arrived at the holding pen.
The holding pen was already quite busy but my dad and I still found some empty seats. Once boarding time had arrived (10:10) there came an announcement saying that it will be another 10-15 min before boarding begins. After 15 min there came another announcement that it will be another 5-10 min before boarding begins.
Eventually at 10:35 boarding began, so everybody stood up and created the usual chaotic boarding scene. The families with small children accompanied by the passengers who need special assistance boarded first, followed by the business class passengers, then the “status” passengers and then it was time for the economy passengers to board. As we were almost situated in the very back of the plane we were one of the first allowed to board.
After zigzagging our way through the crowd the gate agent checked our BP (as it was already scanned at security) and we were let through.
Upon entering the plane we exchanged greetings with the male FA, took a right at the first aisle, and headed towards our seat: 41A/B at the back of the plane. First impression of the cabin: A bit cramped as I couldn’t walk straight through the aisle because the overhead bins were in the way.
Once arriving at our seats I got settled in and took a quick look outside where a company A330 was getting ready:
The cabin was filling up, flight load will be 100% in Y:
The PTVs were showing different ads/commercials:
Flight crew on this flight was a mixture of different genders and ages. All ok, they did their job (some with a smile, some not) except for one male FA. He seemed a bit hung over (or something like that) and didn’t really want to be there.
At 11:00 the door was closed and the male purser came on the PA with the usual announcements. No announcements from the cockpit (except for a very short one before final approach) and no announced flying time.
Pushback + Taxi
At 11:10(bang on time) we started pushback:
Meanwhile the safety demonstration was being played on the PTVs:

Passing by these remote stands means we are either heading to the “Polder” or “Zwanenburgbaan” also known as runways 36C and 36L:
We took a right which means we are headed to the Polderbaan (36L):
An Arkefly 767 departing for some place sunny:
Take-off + Climb
Once (finally) arriving at 36L, we immediately started take-off roll:
And lift off!:
Flying by the city of Haarlem:
We took a left turn heading straight towards the North Sea:
Which provided a nice view of 36L, if you look closely you can see an aircraft departing:
Straight into the clouds:
As always, the sun is shining above the clouds!:
Meanwhile the PTVs were playing a Traveler Inspection Process video while the flight crew were handing immigration forms out:
Seatback + Contents
Now let’s take a look at the seatback + its contents, but first the mandatory legroom shot:
Safety card:
SkYMall magazine summer 2012:
Sky magazine July 2012:
Another Sky magazine which was fully in Japanese or Chinese?:
And the last one: the tax & duty free Sky Shopping magazine:
Snack Service
About 1h15min into flight the crew came around offering snacks + beverages: Mini Pretzels + Lightly Salted Peanuts, together with that I got a Sprite:
IFE System
At the beginning of the flight the remote control for my PTV wasn’t working at all, after about 1h it finally started working after having to press the same button about 5 times each time(and pretty hard) which became quite irritating to have to do after a while:
Now let’s take a closer look at Deltas IFE system, first the welcome screen with 8 different categories:
The watch category has 4 sub categories:
The movie category offers around 102 movies in 20 different genres:
The TV category offers around 40 different TV series:
The HBO section offers different TV series, movies etc. You do have to pay extra for them though:
Another main category is: Listen, this has 2 sub categories. The albums sub category offers 200+ albums you can listen to, the radio sub category has a bunch of different radio stations on offer:
Play, another main category, offers 15 different games:
The 4th main category: Explore has 2 subcategories:
The Delta experience sub category shows information of each of Deltas products:
The other sub category: Our fleet, offers information/details of each aircraft on their fleet:
One very irritating thing are these commercials that pop up every 5/10 minutes:
The 5th category: Spy Kids, for all the kids onboard:
The 6th category: Playlists, is where you can make your own playlist that you can listen to. The 7th category: This trip, has 2 sub categories:
The terminal maps sub category offers maps of different airports Delta flies to:
The feedback sub category:
The last main category is Help & Settings which pretty much speaks for itself:
By now we are just past Ireland with 5h36min to go at FL350:
2 hours into flight the purser started announcing that they will be coming around with lunch offering 3 different options: Rice yellow chicken curry, vegetable lasagna or a Caesar salad I started to watch a movie and chose for: The Hangover, IMO a great movie!:
Lunch Service
Once the crew had reached our row there were only 2 options left: The vegetable lasagna (which turned out to be pasta) or the Caesar salad. I opted for the vegetable pasta which tasted ok:

Together with that I got a Sprite:
My dad opted for the Caesar salad:
After lunch, the crew came around offering Coffee/Tea:
After finishing The Hangover there was 3h37min to go and still at FL350:
Lavatory
Time to pay the lavatory a visit, which was still in good condition:
The cabin:
I then decided to watch a classic: Forrest Gump also a great movie!:
Meanwhile the crew came around with trays offering water:
Flying over Canada by now:
Snack Service
With 1,5 hours to go the crew came around with the last service for this flight: A 3 cheese calzone together with chocolate ice cream (which both tasted good) and a beverage:
Together with that I got a coke:
Descent
Once Forrest Gump finished, there was only 0h30min to go and we finally started descent at FL370:
Speedbrakes were being deployed:
Getting closer and closer to BOS:
We flew straight past BOS:
After passing BOS we made a sharp left turn:
Flew straight for a while:
Passing South Weymouth Naval Air Station:
And making 2 sharp right turns:
For…..
Final Approach + Landing
To runway 4R:
Under the wing you can see Norwood Memorial Airport:
Passing by Downtown Boston:

A Delta 767 and Icelandair 757 sitting at their gate, we will park to the left of the DL 767:
In our parking position at 12:45, 15min ahead of schedule!:
De-boarding
Soon enough the front left door was opened and everybody made their way towards the front. We bid the crew farewell and headed towards…
Immigration + Customs
After waiting for about 10min at the “non US residents lane” we, with a whole bunch of other people, were directed to the “US residents lane” as there were barely any people there anymore. 10min later it was our turn, so we approached the TSA agent and handed our passports and form over. After answering only a couple questions, having a picture + the fingerprints of our thumb and 4 fingers on both hands taken our passports were stamped and we were let through without a problem. Next stop: Baggage belt. Once arriving, our baggage was already there. So we picked our baggage up and headed towards the exit after handing in our form. The arrivals hall was quite busy, so we made our way outside and took a right to the end of the sidewalk where all the busses arrive and depart from.
Concord Coach Lines
Our final destination for today and the first stop of our vacation will be South Portland, Maine, visiting friends. Transportation to South Portland will be by bus: Concord Coach Lines. Having bought tickets online a couple weeks ago back at home we were ready to go. Soon enough the bus arrived, so we handed our luggage to the bus driver, showed our ticket and boarded the bus.
The only stop this bus made was at the Boston bus station. After waiting there for 15min (more passengers boarded) we headed straight towards South Portland which took about 2 hours:
Once arriving in South Portland we were picked up by our friends and headed to their house, the place we will be staying at the next 5 days. During our 5 day stay we had some good times, enjoyed each other’s company and visited…
Portland – Old Port
One day we visited downtown Portland, also known as the old port. A beautiful part of the city with a nice harbor:
Note how crooked this building is:
A beautiful yacht sitting at the harbor:
We had a little snack at this great café:
Freeport
Another day we visited the town of Freeport, which has a whole bunch of outlet stores, and did some shopping:
Boston
We also visited the city of Boston:
Museum of Science
We went to the Museum of Science, as our friends were members there it was free for us:
Butterfly Garden
First we paid a visit to the butterfly garden. The ticket:
Theater of Electricity
After the butterfly garden we headed over to the Theater of Electricity:
Where there was a show about lightning, it was more for kids but still fun to see:
This helicopter was hanging around:
At last we visited the Lost Egypt exhibition, unfortunately no pictures were allowed inside:
Boston Harbor
After a nice time at the MOS, we walked over to the harbor of Boston…:
Where you can also watch the arrivals into Boston:
We walked from the harbor back to the car, and drove back to South Portland.
Conclusion
It was my first time flying longhaul on Delta and I must say I overall had an ok flight
The cabin, although a bit cramped, was still in good condition.
The food was decent considering it was economy food.
The IFE system is also good, too bad my remote only worked half. The only irritating thing are the commercials that keep popping up.
The crew was ok (except for the one male FA), did their job and that’s it.
Concord Coach Lines is a great bus company if you need to travel between Boston and Maine, I surely recommend them!
Dowtown Portland was a great place, Freeport a nice place for shopping and Boston a nice city to visit.
So this will end part 1 of this series, as it already way to long. If you’re still reading, thank you very much for taking the time to read this report, it is much appreciated.
Comments and Questions are as always, very welcome and much appreciated.
Part 2 featuring 2 short hops with Delta and a big delay will be online at the end of the week (I hope).

Thanks for the thorough trip report. It made great reading.
I was talking to an American recently who told me that they love Boston very much because it is the only city in USA that has anything close to a history. It makes it sound an interesting place to visit one day.
Unless you particularly love butterflies, going to a botanical garden has always seemed a last resort for entertainment.
That lady in the safety demo looks like she has had a dreadfully cheap face lift. Those lips have been over-puffed and her face has been pulled too tight. There are so many beautiful people in the world you'd think the photographer or film-maker would have popped out onto the street and grabbed one for the shot.
The quality of service on any American airline has always worried me.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Great report Brendan, and I look forward to my maiden visit to Boston town in about 6 weeks from now. I'm doing the A330-300 as well, also DL, but in Economy Comfort, so I'll give an review on that.
I think on some routes DL flies, the A330 is even too small. There is a lot of traffic between AMS and the US.

Boston is a wonderful city, and I'd recommend it first to anyone coming to visit from abroad, but it's certainly not the only city with history. Philadelphia and New York City have a rich history which closely mirrors that of revolutionary-era of Boston, Baltimore and DC have buildings and neighborhoods going back nearly that far as well, and how can you forget Williamsburg or St. Augustine? (By the way, I'm neglecting 97% of the country west of these cities with a unique history all its own.)
Yes Boston rules (though I am partial), and its history is rich, but whoever said it's the only city with a history is a doofus.

Hi Brendan,
good report with many nice pictures. The product in general looks fine, but I don't like these leather seats. I prefer the fabric seats NWA had on these A330s. The airshow was also better on my NWA A332 and A333 flights some years ago.

Thanks for the detailed and interesting report. I must say I am quite amazed by Delta. Nice report, thanks for sharing! The destination pictures are also appreaciated, especially those of Portland. I considered visiting it when I was in the region last year, but didn't get around to it. Why didn't you fly to PWM? Doesn't DL offer a bunch of connecting flights from DTW and JFK?
