With KLM To Bergen: A Quarter Of A Trip Report

It’s another busy week of flying for me. It started last Friday, 10. August 2012, with a weekend trip to Stockholm on Swiss, Brussels Airlines and Tyrolean. You can find that report here:
Swiss, Brussels Airlines & Tyrolean To Stockholm (by Knightsofmalta Aug 13 2012 in Trip Reports)

Just three days after I get back from Sweden, I’m heading north again, this time on a business trip to Bergen in Norway with KLM via Amsterdam. I leave for Bergen on Wednesday, 15. August 2012, and return the next day. The day after that, on Friday, I’m off to Malta for the weekend.

That all ends up looking like this:

Before we start
Admittedly I was not even planning to write a report on this trip, and in actual fact, what you have here is more like a quarter of a trip report. It covers the leg from Zurich to Amsterdam only. But the experience with KLM on this trip is so good that it’s only fair to share it with you. It’s so much nicer than just to complain about the bad experiences.

Date: 15. August 2012
From: Zurich
To: Amsterdam
Aircraft: B737-700
Airline: KLM
Cabin: Economy
Seat: 4A, window

GETTING TO THE AIRPORT
Something unusual happens today. I normally aim to be at the airport two hours before departure, just in case. My flight will be leaving at 11h55 so I should really take the airport train at 08:40, which will get me to Zurich Airport at 09:56. But today something unusual happens. I may already have mentioned that. Yes, where I’m usually awake by 06h00, today I wake up at 06h00, turn around fall asleep again. When I wake up it’s 08h30 and I have the option of rushing to the station and probably missing the train, or stepping into the shower and taking the train an hour later. That will still get me to the airport an hour before departure. And the shower it is.

Refreshed and ready for a day of flying with one of my favourite airlines I leave my flat at 09h20. I make a stop at the Conficerie Bachmann next door to get myself a chocolate bun and then from there it’s on to the train.

The airport train is empty this time of day. It makes a couple of stops on the way but even so it never really fills up.

AT THE AIRPORT
Reliable as a Swiss watch we pull into Zurich Airport station on time.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Bergen%202012/P1050733.jpg

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Bergen%202012/P1050734.jpg

I head one floor up and exchange some Norwegian Krona and some Euros.

When I checked in online I had automatically been assigned seat 4A, which is okay. But I was planning on taking a few pictures of the wing and the flaps to use in my courses. So I head for a check-in counter to see if I might be able to change.

The lady at the counter is friendly and comments that she rarely has passengers wanting to be move backwards rather than forwards. I try to sound convincingly surprised as I say ‘oh really?’ but fail miserably and start laughing. She offers me row 9, which is about the height of the leading edge, so it’s no good either.

So I thank her and tell her to leave me where I am. She agrees and tells me that to console me she’s blocked the seat next to me, so at least I’ll have some peace and quite. This set the tone for my KLM experience.

After that I head straight to security, figuring there may be a queue. There isn’t and very soon I find myself airside.

THE LOUNGE
The Skyteam lounge in Zurich is poo, so I shan’t bother. Besides, by the time I’m airside my flight is already showing up as ‘go to gate’. That’s mainly because the flight will be departing from one of the remote B bus gates in that horrible provisorium they built, a very unattractive and bleak hovel.

The waiting area.
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Bergen%202012/P1050746.jpg

And then it happens. I’m busy rearranging the content of my hand luggage, when a black limousine pulls up outside. The door opens and out comes no lesser than Iggy Pop himself! My initial reaction is ‘how cool is this?’. But that quickly gives way to something else as first I notice that Iggy walks like and old man and then realise that in fact Iggy is an old man!

BOARDING
I’m one of the last passengers to get on the second bus. I’m standing by the front door of the bus. As a result, when we arrive at the aircraft, I’m actually closer to the rear stairs than the forward ones. Brilliant! So I take my time taking pictures as I wait for the queue to move.

THE CABIN
There is one person sitting on the aisle but other than that, true to her word, the middle seat remains empty.

The cabin looks clean and roomy and from my seat I have some excellent views.

THE SERVICE
The crew on this flight is brilliant. However, having said that all, all the crew on this trip are. In any case, this bunch seems very friendly and approachable. I watch the purser as she makes the welcome announcement. She stands in the cabin for people to see her and as she speaks she lets her eyes wander to actually look at the passengers. A nice gesture I find that certainly give the impression of competence of the crew.

After take off she comes to my seat to inform me that I have the shortest connection in Amsterdam of all the passengers on board but that I have absolutely nothing to worry about. We’ll be arriving on time and I will have more than enough time. Later on, before we land she comes by again to confirm I have a guaranteed connection.

THE MEAL
KLM recently did away with the lunchtime sandwich service as part of its cost saving measures. So I have the Pretzels and an apple juice with that.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Bergen%202012/P1050781.jpg

After that I just sit back, relax and enjoy the views.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Bergen%202012/P1050786.jpg

ARRIVAL
Arrival in Amsterdam is on the runway next to the Fokker Farm, I’m not sure what number it has. I spot this beauty as we slow down.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/m627/Knightsofmalta/Bergen%202012/P1050787.jpg

In any case it means a very short taxi to the C gates. As the purser told me, I have more than enough time to make my connection so I head up to the food court for some food before my next flight.

EPILOGUE
I did not take any pictures of the onward flight to Bergen or of the return trip. But I would just like to mention one last experience with KLM on this trip that really left me speechless.

In the inflight duty free shop, KLM offers those stirring thingies they have in Business Class. They have a nice intricate pattern and are elegantly twisted. You can buy a set of six for EUR25. But the crew on the flight from Zurich tells me they do not have them on that flight. So when I board the flight to Bergen, I ask the purser if perhaps they have these stirrers on this flight. Later on when the inflight sales begin, she stops and informs me that they haven’t got them on this flight either. I tell her it’s no big deal but she apologises profusely. Later on as she passes my seat she says ‘watch it, I’m going to drop something’. And indeed, she drops one of the unused stirrers from Business Class in my lap. She says she hopes it will be a slight consolation. I am over the moon. What a really nice gesture.

As I disembark in Bergen I stop to thank her for her kindness, I tell her she made me very happy with the gift she made me. ‘That’s what we’re here for, Sir’ she says and wishes me a pleasant stay in Bergen.

To me that is what professionalism is all about!

Hello William

Great report, thanks for sharing.
It does seem that KLM has one of the better products out there in Y inside Europe.

Well, maybe I'm biased because I like KLM anyway. But I was really impressed by the quality and the consistency of the product and crew.

Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Great report! Thanks for sharing it with us. I'm really glad you had a terrific flight. Although they are my 'home carrier', in al honesty I can concur with you that they really have a nice product. I don't fly with them often, but my latest flight with them (last month to DPS) was in the same league with a wonderful crew. I was really impressed by them as they had good catering (combined with lot's of drink and snack runs in the middle of the night) and incredible offerings on their IFE. Only drawback was the comfort of the seats in their B77W's (Y-class); narrow and a tight seat pitch. The upgrade to Economy Comfort is really worthwhile.

Those coffee stirrers designed by Marcel Wanders are beautiful aren't they? There is a webshop from KLM, but unfortunately they don't sell them over there.

Hi William,

You really seem to like KLM. I find them to be quite mediocre IMHO. The planes are somewhat boring and the -800s lack airshow which is really annoying. The crews can be very nice or downright awful so it is a bit of a hit and miss really. But my biggest pet peeve is the rationing of drinks - a Finn is happy if you keep him well lubricated with no fear of having to wait eons for the next drink. Against this background the silly "one drink only" policy of KLM is just bloody annoying.

Good for you to have found your favorite airline - now keep flying them!

Bergen is an amazing city, and by being there for work you are combining the best of both worlds - getting someone foot the massive tab a visit to this most expensive of destinations most certainly will rack up!

Hello William,

Nice little picturesque report. My impression of the KLM is very good as well, although I've taken only a few flights on them. It's great to see the crew's professionalism and joy of the job. All the little details just make the difference here!

I see what you mean, one tends to be biased about one's home carrier. I'm not really sure if I'm more amazed by how nice the crews were or by how consistently they were on all the flights. If you know what I mean.

From what I understand, the B777W have the Air France Business Class seat. Is it also an AF seat in Y or is that a standard KLM seat?

Hi William,

Haha, I missed you again, I flew back into ZRH that evening!

I've decided that no trip report of yours ex-ZRH would be complete without those pictures of the train ride from Basle. I really like the fact that you post them, you're able to turn the most mundane part of the journey into such a voyage of discovery! Good to hear that the unexpected lie in didn't cause you to miss the flight.

Btw, Cafe Sprüngli is now open Airside, although maybe you spotted it on your subsequent trip to Malta.

Well, I guess even a wild child has to grow old sooner or later!

I've only done a few legs on KLM, but as you know was very happy with the service I received. Your experiences confirm this. Great to see that they take such pride in their work.

I think part of it is just that the Dutch as so laid back and relaxed. I think that helps if you work in the service sector.

leave for Bergen on Wednesday, 15. August 2012, and return the next day. The day after that, on Friday, I’m off to Malta for the weekend.

My is that a lot of flying! I'm guessing keeping those gold cards renewed won't me much of an issue for you?
Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
It’s so much nicer than just to complain about the bad experiences.

Now that's an interesting change in human nature. Normally people tend to only focus on the bad things, and take all good for granted. Nice that you went the opposite
Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
Reliable as a Swiss watch we pull into Zurich Airport station on time.

If only the trains in Sweden were that reliable. Then I would've taken the train to ARN all the time, without fearing to miss my flight.

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
There is one person sitting on the aisle but other than that, true to her word, the middle seat remains empty.

So Iggy Pop wasn't sitting in Business Class? And what's that weird compartment opening up from the middle of the ceiling over the aisle?

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 4):
Against this background the silly "one drink only" policy of KLM is just bloody annoying.

Yes Petteri it's a bloody annoying policy, and it doesn't just apply for Economy Class. A friend of mile who recently flew them in Business Class from Brazil was denied to be served a glass of red wine AND Champagne at the same time. Quite silly really, since he would just ask for the champagne after finishing his wine. Both he and the seatmate had a laugh about this stupid policy, which made the stewardess turn red like a tomato.

"Wheels Up!"

Hi William,

Another great report on my home airline with some very nice crew! Nice to see you having more great flights with them!
Have quite some KLM trips coming up the next few months, looking forward to them as always..

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
But the experience with KLM on this trip is so good that it’s only fair to share it with you. It’s so much nicer than just to complain about the bad experiences.

Thats a very good decision you dont see that often
Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
When I wake up it’s 08h30 and I have the option of rushing to the station and probably missing the train, or stepping into the shower and taking the train an hour later. That will still get me to the airport an hour before departure. And the shower it is.

Thats a wise decision hehe, great to hear your "oversleeping" didnt cause you too much trouble

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
I head one floor up and exchange some Norwegian Krona and some Euros.

You sure have to exchange a lot of money with all your trips hehe

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
She agrees and tells me that to console me she’s blocked the seat next to me, so at least I’ll have some peace and quite.

That was very nice of her

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
So I take my time taking pictures as I wait for the queue to move.

What a great chance to be able to take those pictures, love them!

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
Arrival in Amsterdam is on the runway next to the Fokker Farm, I’m not sure what number it has

Runway 06
Quoting Knightsofmalta (Thread starter):
Later on as she passes my seat she says ‘watch it, I’m going to drop something’. And indeed, she drops one of the unused stirrers from Business Class in my lap. She says she hopes it will be a slight consolation. I am over the moon. What a really nice gesture.

wow, that was very nice of her, great crew!

cheers,

Brendan

Oh absolutely. I have yet to have a bad experience with them.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 11):
My is that a lot of flying! I'm guessing keeping those gold cards renewed won't me much of an issue for you?

Actually I was expecting to do less travel this year than I did last year. Famous last words...But as you say, at least maintaining my statuses won't be a problem.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 11):
Now that's an interesting change in human nature. Normally people tend to only focus on the bad things, and take all good for granted. Nice that you went the opposite

Thanks for mentioning that actually. It's surprisingly gratifying in fact.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 11):
If only the trains in Sweden were that reliable. Then I would've taken the train to ARN all the time, without fearing to miss my flight.

Does that happen? Now he tells me! I've often used the Arlanda Express and save for the fact that it's not cheap I've never had anything to complain about.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 11):
So Iggy Pop wasn't sitting in Business Class? And what's that weird compartment opening up from the middle of the ceiling over the aisle?

I've no idea. It all happened so quickly.

Same here, next one in two weeks.

Yeah, I could open my own bank!

Quoting adamspotter (Reply 12):
What a great chance to be able to take those pictures, love them!

Boarding via stairs is always an experience. And fortunately, for a change it wasn't raining.

Quoting adamspotter (Reply 12):
Runway 06

Eh, yes exactly...thanks!

Quoting adamspotter (Reply 12):
wow, that was very nice of her, great crew!

And how! I must say I was rather touched.

Jonas, Brendan, thanks for taking the time to comment!

Cheers,
William
