Introduction

While Lufthansa and British Airways continue to acquire nearly every European legacy carrier in existence, TAP Portugal is the odd ball left out. Based in LIS, its small-ish operation would make it a seemingly perfect candidate for a LH / BA takeover. However, TAP is one of the few remaining European state-owned airlines, which changes everything. Rumors have been floating around for years about privatization, but similar to most government-owned entities, progress has been slow to non-existent.

I would say that TAP’s international reputation is rather weak. Most of TAP’s long-haul aircraft have outdated cabins, TAP’s employees are not known for their politeness, and their hub in LIS is a pain in the a** with its multitude of bus gates. From a business perspective, the airline itself usually manages to at least break even. TAP’s subsidies such as Groundforce handling, however, continue to lose a lot of money. Being some of the highest paid airline employees in the world, TAP’s employees naturally love to go on strike about once a year or so. I was definitely looking forward to seeing what this airline had in store for me.

Miami (MIA)

Having flown down from TPA on one of my least favorite U.S. carriers, American Airlines, I had a lot of time to kill. I spent most of my time in the AA terminal downloading music and just messing around. About 3 hours before my TAP flight, I meandered over to concourse J.

When I noticed the ridiculous amount of the baggage-wrapping stations, I realized quickly that the clientele of concourse J and H was not your average American traveler. In fact, I think I was one of the few Americans in this terminal. And this is a U.S. airport! It was good preparation for the week ahead of me.

I had checked-in online the night before, but of course I left my boarding pass at home. No problem, the friendly and efficient check-in agent printed me another boarding pass in less than 10 seconds. Having an extreme fear of airlines losing checked baggage, I had crammed everything into my carry-on suitcase and managed to avoid checking a bag. Like most foreign carriers operating in the U.S., TAP outsources their ground handling to a local company.

TAP operates out of concourse H in MIA, and while it’s a fundamentally nice building, I did not think it was well taken care of. There were a few food options, but I just went to the gate played Temple Run on my iPhone.

My ride to LIS tonight, CS-TOO christened Fernão de Magalhães.

TAP Portugal flight TP 112

Boarding commenced about 45 minutes before departure, with no less than 6 gate agents assisting with the boarding process. They attempted to board Business class first, which failed miserably as the Economy passengers completely blocked all possible paths to the jetway.

Shortly after, us lowly steerage pax were invited to board. Yay!

Date: 10 August 2011
Airline: TAP Portugal
Flight: TP 112
Aircraft: Airbus A330-202
Aircraft Reg: CS-TOO
Departure City: Miami, Florida
Departure Airport: Miami International Airport (MIA / KMIA)
Arrival City: Lisbon, Portugal
Arrival Airport: Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS / LPPT)
Scheduled Departure Time: 5:00 PM
Actual Departure Time: 4:57 (from gate, 3 min early)
Scheduled Arrival Time: 6:15 AM
Actual Arrival Time: 5:53 AM (on parking stand, 22 min early)
Estimated Load: 80%
Class: Economy

I was welcomed aboard by a flight attendant and promptly directed to my seat. This aircraft is one of the newly-built A330s delivered directly to TAP from Airbus. This meant extra “perks” such as AVOD and new seats.

The cabin looked good and new, and the seats were pretty comfortable with footrests. Pitch was standard at 32 inches I believe.

Why so serious?

As the flight filled up, I couldn’t help but notice that the seat next to me remained unoccupied. No… could it be? Doors closed shortly after, and I did a victory cheer as I moved all my stuff to the adjacent seat and sprawled out across the row. It was to be a comfortable flight!

Ready for pushback. Miami clearance delivery, AIR PORTUGAL 112 requesting IFR clearance to Lisbon as filed.

The TAP flight attendants were young, well-kept, and looked good. A far cry from what I’m used to in the U.S.!

The captain welcomed us on board with a very detailed announcement. He announced a flight time of just 7 hours. Wow, I had no idea MIA-LIS was so short! He spoke excellent English; I was impressed.

Pushback commenced 3 minutes early at 4:57 PM, and we began a slow taxi to runway 8R. Oddly enough, the safety video was only in Portuguese with English subtitles. I’ve never seen this before; usually airlines have a full English portion.

Takeoff was powerful (A330 is the only long-haul Airbus aircraft I like), and we quickly ascended into the hovering thunderstorms.

Descolagem!

Climbout was a little rough because of the scattered thunderstorms. Bring on the turbulence!

The purser introduced herself, welcomed us aboard, and detailed the in-flight service.

I began to explore the IFE, which was a standard AVOD system by Panasonic. I watched the Hunger Games, which I thought was excellent.

Shortly after reaching our cruise altitude, the captain once again came over the P/A to welcome us on-board. He gave us details about our route, and thanked us again for flying TAP.

The crew promptly began the meal service, which was a choice between fish and pasta. I got the pasta, which was a standard airline meal. It was edible, but I would be outraged if I had to pay for it at a restaurant. But the good news is that I got to drink alcohol (legally)! One of the advantages of international travel. TAP uses metal utensils in Economy class, which I really appreciated.

After dinner I paused my movie, popped an Ambien, and dawned my Tempur-Pedic eye shield around my head. I was out until about 2 hours before arrival in LIS.

Upon waking from my nice slumber, I resumed watching the Hunder Games. A small breakfast was served, which was standard for a short-ish TATL flight. It wasn’t warm, but I thought it was sufficient.

The flight attendants on this flight were nice and friendly. This was obviously no Emirates or Singapore Airlines, but TAP’s crew members were definitely competitive with fellow European rivals. Nice job TAP cabin crew!

Descent into LIS commenced before the sun began to rise. I was hoping for daylight landing, but this was not to be the case.

Touchdown on runway 03 was firm, and taxi to the remote stand was quick.

Disembarkation was from door 2L, and as usual with LIS, the bus ride to the terminal was a lengthy affair offering an extensive tour of the entire airfield.

Lisbon (LIS)

The bus dropped us off at immigration, where the arrival boards displayed aircraft regs for all incoming flights. I LOVE this, and have never seen this anywhere else.

Since LIS was not my final destination, I began of the process of transiting to my next flight. I’ll give you all a quick hint of what is to come:

Conclusion

I had a really nice flight with TAP. We departed on-time and arrived early into LIS. The aircraft was very nice, seats were comfortable, and the IFE was more than sufficient for this flight. The food was acceptable and the cabin crew was friendly. Based on this flight, TAP is definitely competitive with other European rivals, and I’d say a notch above most U.S. carriers. I know TAP’s hard product is significantly worse on the A340 and some A330s, but this review is based strictly on the flight I took. I would probably recommend TAP to others assuming the price is competitive.

I hope you enjoyed my Trip Report!

Very nice report!
Can't say you see many long haul TAP reports on here so it is always nice to see what their service is like; and it looks to be pretty good.
The photos were great and also helped show off their product well.

Hope you enjoyed Lisbon, Its on my list of cities that I would like to visit.

Kev.

Gosh - this happens on almost every flight now; passengers just milling around and then as soon as boarding is announced, they rush in line! The plane is not leaving without you!

TAP Y looks pretty good; definitely above-average as to what any US airline would be able to provide on a similiar route in Y.

Thanks for sharing!

HEY! Good to see this report up. Thanks for writing ... don't really have much to comment as it seems like a standard fare TP YCL. Surprised though that you got younger good looking crew. Usually, prestige routes on TP go based on seniority. Oh, and you're SUCH a tease with that departure board ... and I am pretty sure I know where you are headed  .

This is such a hard-to-find trip report on TAP TATL flight.

Overall the flight seems to be very pleasant, newer A330-200 with Weber seats also with AVOD.
Dinner was very generous (exploding from its container lol) served with alcoholic beverages and metal cutlery.
The cold breakfast isn't bad for the length of the flight, and it comes in tray with proper utencil.
My breakfast on LH JFK-FRA last autumn was smaller and comes in paper tray.

From this review, and as a star gold, I'd take TAP across the atlantic anytime.
Many thanks for the very nice report.

I agree that TAP is known to be a full service carrier, but I've never heard of anyone raving about TAP's service delivery... on the ground or in the air. The majority of TP's long-haul fleet has VERY outdated hard products.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 6):

Yes, whether it be cabin crew or the pilots, there is some sort of issue at least once a year. Also, Portuguese ATC goes on strike fairly often as well.

Nope. There MIGHT be one A340 that has been refurbished, but I'm not sure of the status.

When I said "standard", I was referring to the taste. I agree that the meal was generous.

I thought it was pretty good for airline food.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 6):

Glad to hear you enjoyed your flight with TAP! I am only too aware TAP is no 5-star airline, but I feel we offer adequate catering and comfort and decent IFE on the newer A330. I agree the A340 are now quite dated in regards of inflight entertainment but they are being fitted with new seats and individual IFE screens in economy class
It also great to hear you liked Lisbon, I think it is a really beautiful city - but then again I am obviously bias

Sorry but that is not correct, dont know where you heard that. At TAP there is no bidding system like in the USA and other airlines! We cannot pick the destinations we want to go to, I'm affraid

Nice report and pictures, TP YCL looks pretty reasonable, especially the meals, I was expecting much less.

In my experience, TP JCL is pretty good, whilst the European C class is a real let down, the staff attitudes and catering are quite a let down.

Cheers

What a great trip report MHTripple7

Since TAP began service to our city I was expecting a trip report of it and here it is. When I lived back in Venezuela TP was a great option to cross the atlantic specially for travelers going to Spain. Most of my relatives who travel between Galicia and Venezuela always chose TP for their journey over IB being the service the deciding factor.

Hi there MHtripple7,

Lisbon is quite a nice little city, with possibly the friendliest people in Europe   Indeed, English knowledge seems to be a whole lot better in Portugal compared to Spain, France and Italy... particularly Spain (sorry!).

TAP seems ok. That's how most Euro airlines are, I guess... Not much to separate them in air, although Northern European airlines tend to be a bit better.

Looking forward to the next part... It's a country you transited before, is it not?

Thanks for writing it up!

TAP operates out of concourse H in MIA, and while it’s a fundamentally nice building, I did not think it was well taken care of. There were a few food options, but I just went to the gate played Temple Run on my iPhone.

Concourse H is not great but Concourse J is very nice and there is a good shopping and food area in between Concourse H and J did you not go there?

Thank you guys for taking the time to comment!

Quoting pacifique75 (Reply 8):
Glad to hear you enjoyed your flight with TAP! I am only too aware TAP is no 5-star airline, but I feel we offer adequate catering and comfort and decent IFE on the newer A330. I agree the A340 are now quite dated in regards of inflight entertainment but they are being fitted with new seats and individual IFE screens in economy class

Yes, you guys do a good job in my opinion! I am glad to hear the A340s are being refurbished. Are there any plans for the older A330s?

Quoting pacifique75 (Reply 8):
It also great to hear you liked Lisbon, I think it is a really beautiful city - but then again I am obviously bias

Yes, it's surprising that more Americans don't visit LIS. Although I think it's starting to become a little more popular.

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 9):

Nice report and pictures, TP YCL looks pretty reasonable, especially the meals, I was expecting much less.

As was I. It was a nice surprise.

Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 9):
In my experience, TP JCL is pretty good, whilst the European C class is a real let down, the staff attitudes and catering are quite a let down.

That's interesting. I've never flown TAP short haul, just long haul.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 10):
Nice review on your TAP flight. Actually, it doesn't look half as bad as you expected. Next time, choose IB and see what they're like...

Haha I think I'll try my best to steer clear of IB. I have yet to hear anything good about them.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 10):
And that's quite an achievement in these harsh economic times.

For sure. Although I'm not sure of how they're doing lately.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 10):
Love the livery: simple yet modern and stylish.

Yes, it's one of the better looking Euro-white schemes out there. Very classy.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 10):
A nice feaure for us a.netters but I doubt if 'normal' pax take notice...

That's a fact!

Quoting cybergus (Reply 11):
Since TAP began service to our city I was expecting a trip report of it and here it is. When I lived back in Venezuela TP was a great option to cross the atlantic specially for travelers going to Spain. Most of my relatives who travel between Galicia and Venezuela always chose TP for their journey over IB being the service the deciding factor.

Very interesting. I suppose IB offers greatly inferior service to almost all airlines.

Quoting cybergus (Reply 11):
Lol...common practice at MIA. Concourse F is quite worse.

Yes I walked through the check-in area for Concourse F. Quite the sight! Have you ever flown Santa Barbara Airlines? I ask since you have a Venezuelan flag. That airline had two or three flights to Venezuela the day I was departing and ALL were heavily delayed it looked like.

Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 12):
Lisbon is quite a nice little city, with possibly the friendliest people in Europe   Indeed, English knowledge seems to be a whole lot better in Portugal compared to Spain, France and Italy... particularly Spain (sorry!).

I agree, I was extremely impressed with their English. Not sure why that is?

Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 12):
TAP seems ok. That's how most Euro airlines are, I guess... Not much to separate them in air, although Northern European airlines tend to be a bit better.

Yep. Euro carriers definitely offer better in-flight service than U.S. carriers. They are probably in the middle of U.S. airlines and Asian airlines in terms of product quality.

Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 12):
Looking forward to the next part... It's a country you transited before, is it not?

You got it!

Quoting Delboy (Reply 13):
Didn't realise TAP flew to Belo Horizonte, you learn something new everyday!

TAP's Brazilian network is extremely impressive. They've done really well there.

Quoting tff (Reply 14):
CS-TOB has been refurbished with new chairs and IFE and flying since early July. The remainder 3 A343s will follow soon.

Great news!

Quoting tff (Reply 14):
The lunch and dinner catering is exactly the same that is served in long-haul flights in C/CL. Outside meal times the service is lighter, though.

This is very impressive, and without a doubt better than almost all other European carriers then.

Quoting flymia (Reply 15):
Concourse H is not great but Concourse J is very nice and there is a good shopping and food area in between Concourse H and J did you not go there?

I did, and I agree that J was much nicer.

Indeed I did (here is the link if you are interested: Oh So RED! MIA-CCS-MIA On SBA Airlines. (pic+vid) (by Cybergus Jan 8 2009 in Trip Reports)), I have a lot of friends who are crew members of SBA Airlines. The delays...well...thats quite common on such airline in peak season. They offer two/three daily flights between CCS-MIA, but on peak season they open a 4th frequency which utilizes their fleet to the maximum causing such delays. Even though, the airline competes quite well with AA and LA on the route and it is very recognized for their service and baggage allowance.

About concourse F it seems that it got trapped into the "Miami Vice/1980" dimension.

Cheers and again congrats.

Hello MHTripple7.

Great trip report, thanks for sharing.
TP's longhaul product looks very impressive, even the meals on a 7hour flight look good.
I flew TAP shorthaul last year and was impressed as well.

Hi MHTripple7,

great report, thanks a lot for it. Good to read something about a long-haul flight from TAP. I have tried them last year on a short-haul and was also pleasantly surprised by them. So good to read they also offer a good product on a long-haul, lucky for you that you got one of their new A330.

great report! TAP seems to be not bad at all!

my family just came back on a CCS-LIS-MUC-LIS-CCS run... they were quite satisfied with the flights, anyhow they had a big delay on the CCS-LIS flight over 5 hours... and than a quite bad expirience with the TAP customer service in LIS - of course they missed their connection and TAP just rebooked them on a flight 10 hour later... of course I brifed my wife to say that TAP should rebook here an my doughter (she was only 5 months old at that time) on a LH flight with an response that TAP is not working with LH... of course after some more discussion and the answer from my wife that than why th LH flight has even a TAP codeshare they finally rebooked them on a LH flight...

Anyhow I am looking to book soon a trip on TP on the same routing but with a 2 days stop in Funchal... as TP still is running once a week CCS- Funchal and Madeira is an Island I am looking to visit since years!

Cheers and thanks for the great report.

Hey there M, nice report!

Quoting MHTripple7 (Thread starter):
Having an extreme fear of airlines losing checked baggage, I had crammed everything into my carry-on suitcase and managed to avoid checking a bag.

Why that? In case your luggage gets lost, your credit card company will cover all your expenses for buying new stuff at the destination, heck I would be thrilled if my luggage gets lost since it essentially means a free shopping spree
Quoting MHTripple7 (Thread starter):
He announced a flight time of just 7 hours. Wow, I had no idea MIA-LIS was so short! He spoke excellent English; I was impressed.

That's short indeed! The NYC flights are even shorter at just 5 hours. Quite ironic in the same time that my ARN-LIS flights were just 30 minutes shorter than a transatlantic.

Quoting MHTripple7 (Thread starter):
I got the pasta, which was a standard airline meal. It was edible, but I would be outraged if I had to pay for it at a restaurant.

Well I don't see how one could make the comparison between economy class catering and restaurant food, heck even most Biz class catering doesn't compare to a proper restaurant. Must say however that the presentation looked quite good.

Quoting MHTripple7 (Thread starter):
and dawned my Tempur-Pedic eye shield around my head.

No Bose® QuietComfort® Acoustic Noise Canceling® Headphones to accompany that?
Quoting MHTripple7 (Thread starter):
TAP’s crew members were definitely competitive with fellow European rivals. Nice job TAP cabin crew!

Yes it seems like the friendliness of the crew have improved over the years since I last flew them. Back then the crews were fiercely rude.

well the shorterter "real" transatlantik flights like BOS-SNN are still slightly over 1000 mi longer thatn ARN-LIS, so even with headwinds etc... the difference would be more than 30 minutes.. or?

Cheers

That's a great Trip Report! Thanks for the link. I didn't realize it was actually called SBA Airlines. The in-flight service looks really good, you just can't expect to leave on-time with them!

I've read those reports actually. Nice job! Yes, it seems that TAP still goes "full-on" with their in-flight service.

I was wondering if TP still flew the CCS-FNC route. What an "exotic" route. Please write a report if you go!

Haha I guess I've never looked at it that way. It's just always a major inconvenience when I don't have any clothes in another country.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 21):

Yeah I've actually flown EWR-LIS before on TAP. The flight was short, but I remembered it being more than 6 hours. Maybe my memory is failing me?

Actually yes! I must have looked like an idiot with all of those things on my head.

I've always found it odd that TAP crews have been known to be rude. Portuguese people are usually very friendly.
