INTRODUCTION

Some time ago, fellow A.netter Daniel told me about a meeting of him with Planehunter to do some spotting around Munich airport.
By that time I didnt know if my schedule would be free on that weekend, so I forgot about that meeting again.
Lets fastforward now a couple of months to a rainy evening, when I'm sitting in front of the computer chatting with Daniel, where he told me again about the meeting.
After checking again my calender, it was clear that I was free on that weekend and the fares on Lufthansa were still quite acceptable, so I told my brother about the trip, who wanted to join as well.
So we quickly logged onto the Lufthansa site and quickly booked a very simple Frankfurt-Munich-Frankfurt.
We were quite excited about the trip, as my brother recently got *G and therefore we could finally check out the Senator lounges in Frankfurt as well as in Munich.

Please also note, that this report is done together with my brother, so some pictures and expressions are credited to him.

SATURDAY 18.08.2012

After quite an early start and a quick drive to Frankfurt, thanks to the unlimited Autobahn, we arrive there at about 6 AM.

The terminal was still pretty empty in most parts, as the holiday traffic usually departs even earlier, all between 4 AM and 5 AM.
Check in was already done at home and we had seats together with Daniel and Robert. ( we were all on the same flight to MUC which was quite a lot of fun! )
As we didnt print out our boarding passes at home, my brother decided to check out the First Class check in area.
There was no queue at all, but the check in agent was quite surprised to see us using the FC area, as we are still both quite young and not wearing the usual dress of all the suits, who normally use this area.
The spanish lady wasn't friendly at all, and kept talking to her collegues during printing us our Bps.
Not First Class like at all and next time we will for sure use the Self Service check in again, as that machine at least writes „ Have a pleasant flight“ in the end of the check in procedure.
By that time the security checkpoint at the A-gates got quite crowded, so we decided to try the freshly renovated Fast lane, where we got through in a rush.

Airside, we first checked the offer in the stores, before heading to the SEN Lounge A26.

This lounge was really small and totally crowded. In the end we got the last two seats.

After having a quick breakfast there, we started our longer walk over to the B gates, as the lounge there is a lot bigger and we still had plenty of time left.

While sitting there, we saw Dr. Markus Merk, one of the most famous german soccer referees.
Anyway the time was over quite quick and we walked back to our gate, where we met up with Daniel and Robert.
Some 10mins later the boarding started and we were among the first to board the plane.

MUNICH

After deboarding, Robert, Daniel, my brother and I quickly made our way to the arrivals part of the airport as we were there scheduled to meet Planehunter himself.

http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/4440/dsc1012s.jpg

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/9776/dsc1013lt.jpg

As another airliner, Marc, was also attending the meeting, but landing an hour or so later then the rest of us, we first went up to the viewing platform of the Terminal, where we had quite a good overview of the apron of Terminal 2.
Soon enough, we saw the mighty Singapore Airlines 777-300ER, just landed from MAN, taxing by with Marc in it.
So we went down to the Arrivals again to meet Marc there.

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/5830/dsc1015m.jpg

After that we went to the world famous AIRBRÄU all together. That is the worlds only airport brewery and one has to say that their brew is quite decent.

http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/389/dsc1019.jpg

We enjoyed our lunch there, combined with a lot of aviation talk of course!
After the very good meal, we went to the Besucherpark with the S-Bahn, where PH was so kind to drive us around with his new 777 with the powerful TFSI90 Engines under the wings
Thanks a lot again for that!
The platform there at the visitors centre was also very good as one had an overview on both runways and the Terminals.
We spent there a lot of quality spotting time.

After some time, the others decided to move to a spot closer to the runway in order to catch the Emirates A380 there, but my brother and I went back to Terminal 2 to have a proper look around there, before heading airside again to check out the lounges in MUC.

[i]FC check in

The terminal wasnt crowded at all at that time of the day and in no time we were airside again and made our way to the 1st Schengen SEN lounge, which looked a bit outdated IMO.

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/3258/dsc1113w.jpg

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/2193/dsc1114d.jpg

After staying there a bit, we decided to move on to the non schengen lounge, where something interesting happened.
The lounge dragon there was quite rude and wanted to move us back to the Schengen lounge, but the most interesting was, that she tried to sell us that Aegean Star Gold members are not allowed to bring any guest to the lounge. What a lie!! In the end she let us in, but that behavior is just unacceptable, especially with the fact, that the lounge was mostly empty.
The lounge itself was nice, but with the lack of natural light, it felt a bit crumped and not airy.

After again some good time there, we moved back to the Schengen Area, where we first had a good look around the offers in the stores, before checking out the last SEN lounge, where we were welcomed in very friendy, hear that Non-Schengen lounge dragon?!

Luckily we were bussed back to the terminal as the mood on the tarmac was magical with the sunset and the flashlights everywhere.
After again some 80mins on the motorway, we arrived home after a very enjoyable day.

CONCLUSION

The flights with LH were as standard as they could be, but they still offer a decent service on these very short flights and manage to serve every passenger, even on a full A321.
The SEN lounges were all nice, but the B gates lounge in Frankfurt was by far the best as it was a lot more stylish and also the largest of all we went to today.
Finally a big thank you to Robert, Daniel, Marc and PH for meeting us today and the great time around MUC, it was a blast! Also again, special thanks to PH for shuttling all of us around!

If you have any comments or questions, feel free to ask!

Thanks a lot for reading.

Cheers
Johannes

Interesting read there - Good insight into the lounges at both FRA and MUC. Also looks like you guys had a good mini-meet!

Ah nice that they allow *G to use the fast lane, which isn't the case at ARN.

Well I've only heard bad things about that lounge, e.g it constantly being crowded. Hopefully things will improve once the A-Plus pier opens.

Yes that place looks much nicer, were the queues to passport control long?

Well it wouldn't surprise me if that soon became the case. With the current cuts and changes in the M&M programme, LH may well bend the rules for some *G airlines access in order not to loose too many customers. But I think the chanses for that happening is pretty small

Really cool photos from your trip with LH! I love the views of the jet-bridge, and the aircraft behind - I wish we had more glass jet-bridges in the US.

Thanks for sharing!

Many thanks for all the pics, it was a beautiful German summer day I believe!
A lot of pics and a lot of lounges covered in a day! Maybe a personal record?
This TR gives me a good idea how each LH lounge at their FRA/MUC base looks like.

Gotta say that the only better Senator lounge at FRA is the B41 lounge, though was too bright as I came in from red-eyed JFK to connect THAI 920 to BKK in PM and the napping area was horrible because few people snored out loud.
C15 lounge comes second because of its non-crowded as dedicated to the (few) gates.
Hate the atmosphere at the Tower lounge in the AM, no seats, loud, supermarket-like catastrophe, it's like everyone is queuing to beg for food. But having said that, I have never been to any schengen lounges at FRA.

The non-Schengen lounge at MUC is looking nice too.
OH yeah, the dragon! I can imagine her attitude lol but you totally have the privilege (lounge visit isn't the "right" but "privilege") to visit the non-schengen lounge, unless rules and regulations specific otherwised.

Thank you for all the pics and report of the LH lounges in FRA/MUC.
Cheers,
net-hkt

Hi Johannes,

Nice to read this account from your mini meet, looks like you got lucky with the weather and had fun. The weather on that day 2500 kilometers towards the north wasn't as good but I certainly had more interesting flights than your run-of-the-mill domestic hops with LH. Still very impressed by Lufthansa's constantly good onboard service and the ability to pull out a full drinks run including beer on an A321 on this very short intra hub route...

I'm now starting to understand what you told me about your brother, he indeed seems to be quite hardcore!

There won't be a flood of reports for this meet and we'll be waiting for them a loong time as all the other attendees aren't exactly known for speedy posting of anything...
Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):

I love how the definition of "proper breakfast" includes beer!

But a very nice idea to make the effort and face the hassle to head to the non-Schengen area, those lounges are way, way better than that crowded A-pier place.

What? That is just a load of bullcrap! But I guess anything Greek is not really that well appreciated in Germany these days...  . Sounds like the behavior of the SVO lounge dragons towards Flying Blue elites...

BTW speaking of Greece great to see a special liveried Air China A330 among your shots! That was a fun flight and some nice memories from the AirBräu too on that trip...

No PH report planned, if you are referring to me. Yes, I'm indeed not known for speedy posting...but posting a report immediately after the trip doesn't make it any better IMO. And even if - I'd still have other priorities in life.

Hi Johannes!

Nice report of your little A.Net meet! Seems like you guys had a nice day, too bad I couldn't attend.
Seems like LH provided you with a couple of standard LH flights, nothing wrong with that.
I like the close-up shots of aircraft at FRA, one of the best things about that airport!

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 8):
But I guess anything Greek is not really that well appreciated in Germany these days...

Your getting like Jonas with your exaggerations P . Except he has the excuse of youth on his side
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 9):
Not true, P.

Hi Johannes

Great trip report, thanks for sharing it with us. It was great seeing you in MUC.
Congrats for your brother in making *Gold, glad you got to enjoy some of the lounges. Some look more cramped than others.
Nice to know LH pleased you more than me. Overall cabin condition and service looks better than I had on MUC-CGN the same day.

Greetings
Marc

Nice report! Decent service from LH as usual so it seems.
And it looks like you had an enjoyable day in MUC too.
I didn't realise there was also a LH lounge in the Schengen area of the B-Pier, looks a lot better then the one in the A pier.

Hi guys,

Sorry for the late reply!!!

Quoting jwhite9185 (Reply 1):
Interesting read there - Good insight into the lounges at both FRA and MUC. Also looks like you guys had a good mini-meet!

Thanks!

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 2):
Hey Johannes, nice report! Great pictures, nice that your brother let you borrow his camera!

Actually he was taking the pictures, not me
Quoting LH4116 (Reply 2):
Ah nice that they allow *G to use the fast lane, which isn't the case at ARN.

Yes thats quite good in FRA

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 2):
Yes that place looks much nicer, were the queues to passport control long?

No they were really short on that saturday morning

Quoting The777Man (Reply 3):
Thanks for a nice report of your meet with PlaneHunter

It was indeed a nice meeting.

Quoting The777Man (Reply 3):
View from Visitor's Park looks much more pleasant than my visit there about 18 months ago......it was very windy and very cold then.

I can imagine that its quite nasty there in wind

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 4):
Nice little meeting you had in MUC...great you could get some guys together for an Airbrau!

Thanks, Airbräu is always great!

Quoting 767747 (Reply 5):
Really cool photos from your trip with LH! I love the views of the jet-bridge, and the aircraft behind - I wish we had more glass jet-bridges in the US.

Thanks! Yes these jet bridges are great for some pics

Quoting nethkt (Reply 6):
Many thanks for all the pics, it was a beautiful German summer day I believe!
A lot of pics and a lot of lounges covered in a day! Maybe a personal record?

Thanks! Yes was indeed a bit too much lounging

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 7):
reat report with many high-quality pictures! It was a pleasure to meet you guys at MUC. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I logged 31 new registrations which isn't bad at all.

Thanks! Concrats for that number!

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 7):
The lighting conditions were excellent on that day. Perfect day for spotting.

They were indeed great!

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 8):
I love how the definition of "proper breakfast" includes beer!

We are in Germany after all
Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 8):
What? That is just a load of bullcrap! But I guess anything Greek is not really that well appreciated in Germany these days...  . Sounds like the behavior of the SVO lounge dragons towards Flying Blue elites...

Yes it was total bullshit that woman was talking.

Don't think there are any problems with Greek citizens around here, they are still nice people.

Hola Johannes!

A great trip report for this mini-meeting in MUC.

Nice to see the lounges at both airport. Certainly the A SEN at FRA is a trap: small, crowded... really pitiful for such a great airline. The ones at MUC are really nice, especially the non-Schengen and the SEN café, shame it was closed. They have really nice snacks there and great coffee.

Nothing beats though the brewery at MUC and the Besucherpark... great idea!

Glad you were able to spend a day with other a.netters, spotting and talking about planes, what else?

Thanks.

Salut!

Roger

Hi Johannes,

really cool to see this rather standard LH-report, on very short fligths, but nevertheless good to read about this little anet meet in MUC during summer. Sadly I couldn't joy. Commitments at work.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
There was no queue at all, but the check in agent was quite surprised to see us using the FC area, as we are still both quite young and not wearing the usual dress of all the suits, who normally use this area.
The spanish lady wasn't friendly at all, and kept talking to her collegues during printing us our Bps.
Not First Class like at all and next time we will for sure use the Self Service check in again, as that machine at least writes „ Have a pleasant flight“ in the end of the check in procedure.

That's bad. Although both of you are young men, you might be the future money for LH. They should always treat a cardholder with respect. That means no chit-chat with collegues when serving a customer.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
This lounge was really small and totally crowded. In the end we got the last two seats.

Crap lounge. I'm not overly impressed by LH lounges in general. They are quite sterile, or boring even. Though the views at FRA lounges are generally good. So I enjoyed my drinks behind the glass watching traffic

Regards
Eric
