Il-96 With Aeroflot: ARN-TLL-SVO-LCA-ARN

This is a tripreport covering my adventure to fly on a Soviet-era aircraft.

As the line above might suggest, I have long wanted to log an aircraft from the Soviet-era. From the time when an aircraft was either western or Russian. The opportunities to log a proper Soviet-era aircraft has diminished greatly over the last couple of years, when airlines such as Aeroflot retired their last Tupolev's and whatnot.

So to log one of these aircraft one had to dig deeper and deeper in the world of un-translated booking engines to find the flights operated by Tu-154, or another aircraft from this era.

But then again, Aeroflot still has one type of aircraft from the Soviet-era left in its fleet; the mighty Ilyushin Il-96. The 4-engined widebody is one of the very last aircraft models developed during the Soviet-era, and the aforementioned airline still have six of the type in its fleet.

The Il-96 has gone from being Aeroflot's flagship aircraft, to being something that's being deployed on their lower tier routes, where a lot of capacity can be useful, with little to none premium demand.
Some of these routes include TLV, LCA and AYT, all from the SU hub at SVO.

These very flights provided a great opportunity to log a Russian jet, since there were no need to travel on an airline whose flights could only be booked from a ticket office in the dodgy suburbs of Moscow, nor was there even a need to get a Russian visa, if one stays at SVO for less that 24 hours.

But there's always two sides to one coin, the cost for one of these flights were a far cry from the 60 EUR SAS youth tickets I have bought so many of to get to Stockholm from Kiruna and vice versa.
The cheapest tickets I could find to these destinations was well over 200 EUR, for a one way.

I was eyeing some of these flights from time to time. I was afraid of booking a flight too early in case of a change of the scheduled aircraft. And then, one May evening this year, not only did I find the usual 275 EUR fare for a SVO-LCA flight operated by an Il-96 on June 27th, but I also realized that DY had lowered the price of their red-eye LCA-ARN flight by some 300 SEK, with a new price-tag of 619 SEK, or about 65 EUR.
As this allowed one to arrive LCA at 18:00 on SU and depart at 3:15 on DY, there was no need for a night spent at a hotel. With this in mind, I finally booked a flight on a Soviet-era jet.
To get to SVO in time for the 15:30 departure, there were no same-day options. So I decided on a 130 EUR ARN-TLL-SVO combo on Estonian Air, with the ARN-TLL leg taking place on the evening of the 26th with the leg to SVO on the morning after, arriving SVO at 10:45, giving me a lagom amount of time at SVO. Equipment for the OV flights were scheduled as Saab 340 and E170.

I originally planned to spend the night in Tallinn at the airport, but at some point of time I booked a night at Hotel Ulemiste, within walking distance of the TLL terminal, for about 55 EUR for the night.

Time went, and the scheduled equipment for SU2074 stayed as an Il-96, and soon it was time for the day of departure.

June 26

I was dropped off at ARN Terminal 5 curbside a couple of hours before my departure.

I tried to check in at a SSK in the SAS check-in hall (OV has since changed ground handling company at ARN and hence has their own check-in desks) but just like on my last OV flight in January ( To The ARN A.net Meet, And Beyond! ARN-TLL-HEL-ARN (by deltamartin Jan 23 2012 in Trip Reports) ), the machine told me to contact the staff.
I did so, and the young SAS check-in agent told me, after checking my booking in her computer, that it's due to my ticket being a cheap one without any luggage allowance. So that explains why I couldn't check in in January either.
She also wanted to see my passport, she first checked the photo page and when I noticed her starting to look for a Russian visa I explained that I didn't have one since I was on a connecting flight beyond SVO. She understood and proceeded with the check-in.
I requested window seats which was granted without any problems as I was quickly handed a SAS-branded boarding pass for both ARN-TLL with seat 6A and next days TLL-SVO with seat 12F.

Next I went through security which was quick.

I briefly looked around at the generally crowded terminal, before heading to the lounge.

As OV uses EuroBonus as their FFP, I was allowed in to the lounge after the lounge agent swiped my EB card.

Estonian Airs webpage states that the SAS Business Lounge is the lounge used by them at ARN, but since the lounge agent didn't state which lounge I was accepted in to I decided to try my luck by heading to the Scandinavian Lounge, and as this move didn't raise a single eyebrow I figured it was a good move.

The lounge was crowded as I arrived, and I had troubles finding a seat, but after grabbing some snacks I managed to settle down at the high table at the food area. Again I had a Ginger Ale, I must say I'm getting quite fond of the beverage.

I spent most of the time just enjoying a couple of drinks and surfing on the provided WiFi.

Soon enough the boarding time was approaching to I decided to head to the gate for my 20:55 departure.

The gate assigned for my flight was 6B, just the same as on the famous A.net OV Saab flight back in January.

We drove to the very same parking position outside of the SAS hangars, and what did I find but the very same aircraft as well, ES-ASN:

Soon after parking in front of the aircraft there was a blonde FA waving us in. Not the same FA as in January though, this one was middle-aged, but just as nice.

I was greeted by the FA as I entered the cabin.

As I reached 6A I realized that it was the exit row on the little Saab. This also meant that I couldn't store my bag under the seat in front of me, and it was too big to fit in the overhead bins, so once boarding calmed down I approached the FA in the galley, who put a tag on it and handed it to the apron workers.

So back to my seat I went and settled down on 6A.
At least the legroom is great here on the exit row, making it somewhat worth the hassle.

The dark leather seat is overall rather comfortable, and I think Eric knows this very seat quite well too.

The load on the flight was rather good, I'd estimate around 75%.

Boarding was completed and then the lone FA did the safety briefing, first vocally and then demonstrating.

She then made the cabin ready for departure as we begun taxiing.

We taxied around the SAS hangar to runway 19L where we took off and banked to the left, lining us up towards Tallinn.

This being a turboprop we soon reached a safe height where the safety belt sign could be turned off, at this time the FA started to prepare the service round, and shortly after that we also reached cruise.

The service round was also the same as on the flight in January, hot and cold beverages and a muffin. This seems to be the textbook OV catering concept, and I find it quite nice.

I had an OJ and water with my muffin. The muffin itself was warm and tasty, but on the small side. Just like in January.

The flight was otherwise quite uneventful, after all this time ES-ASN only had one A.netter on board (as far as I know!).

We parked on a remote stand after a short taxi, I grabbed my bag as I deboarded an went in to the bus that picked us up to give us a lift to the terminal.

After the bus ride we go upstairs and in to the airside transit area. A short walk follows through arrivals and I found myself in the arrival hall where I snapped a photo before I start to head to my hotel.

A 4 minute walk, rounding a parking lot, and I was at the hotel, I have to wait for a minute at the reception since someone else was checking in ahead of me, but soon enough it was my turn, and I was quickly checked in.

June 27

After a not too good night of sleep I woke up at 6.00 local time (5.00 for my body) for my 8.05 departure.

I quickly did my morning rituals and checked out from the hotel and walked to the airport.

No check-in or boarding-pass-printing necessary since I still had the same boarding pass from yesterday for this flight as well.

The security check-in was fast and efficient, rather busy at the x-rays but no queue luckily so I was quickly through.

Airside didn't feel quite as busy as the check-in hall, so I leisurely walked around the terminal, snapping a few pictures, before heading to the lounge.

As I entered the Linda Lounge I gave my Boarding pass and EuroBonus card to the lounge receptionist, who looked at them for a few seconds before allowing me in to the lounge.

The lounge wasn't busy at all, so I grabbed a comfortable seat right next to a big window with a quite nice apron view.

The edible offerings was also quite nice with some crackers and spreads available, together with some sweet stuff.
The drink offerings were even better with sodas, juices and even hard liqueur available. Some orange juice is plenty enough for me this early morning though, thank you!

The lounge isn't very busy with only me and a handful other people around. The lounge isn't very big so I can understand FlyingFinn's annoyance when it's crowded. It has 2 floors though, here's a view of downstairs – from upstairs.

Once done in the lounge, I headed towards the gate. There were no queue at the passport control, but for some reason the guy looked at my passport with a very confused look on his face, for what felt like almost a minute, before handing the passport back to me, without saying anything.

The non-Schengen part of the terminal wasn't overly exciting, with only a few gates and a cafe. I spent most of the remaining time before boarding in the cafe area, since it offered quite nice views and my gate was located there.

Boarding was soon enough called and after queuing for a couple of minutes I reach the desk where they scan my boarding pass and also want to see my passport and Russian visa, I explain that I have a connecting flight at SVO, so the girl lets me board without one. No problems here.

Down the jetway I went, and when I entered the aircraft I was greeted by the female FA working in the front galley. The one working in the back galley were also a woman, both were around 30 years of age.

As I walked down the aisle the cabin did very much look like a Finnair aircraft. This wasn't surprising though since OV is leasing the aircraft from said airline.

I sat down on my window seat 12 F, which is right over the wing. The seat was, just like on my only previous flight on an E-jet ( Going Around In London! ARN-LCY/LGW-ARN (by deltamartin Apr 5 2012 in Trip Reports) ), very comfortable. It was covered in what used to be Finnairs trademark blue fabric.

Boarding was soon completed and I had an open seat next to me, which could only mean that the flight would be even more comfortable. I'd estimate the load in economy to be around 60%.

The crew preformed a manual safety demo and we soon pushed back.

We soon reached safe altitude where the seatbelt sign was turned off. Cruise height was achieved a few minutes later.

Around this time, the service cart reached my row. The service was the same as on my two previous OV flights; a muffin and hot and cold drinks. I had some sparkling water with my muffin.

The flight was otherwise rather uneventful, I mainly just sat in my comfortable seat, enjoying the flight, reading the in-flight magazine etc.

At some point of time during the flight an FA handed out immigration cards. I assumed I didn't need one but I decided to take one anyway, just in case and for the heck of it. For the record, I never filled it out and it wasn't needed when just connecting.

For a while it looked like we'd get a remote parking position, but as we stopped at such a stand, the cockpit crew went on the mike to explain that we were just waiting for our assigned gate to be open, as another aircraft was still there.

Just a couple of minutes later our engines spooled up and taxied to a finger gate at Terminal E.

As we docked to the jetway and the seatbelt sign was turned off I grabbed my stuff and disembarked, thanking the crew as I did so.

As I walked in to the terminal, I felt very excited. Visiting Russia was something I had been wanting to do for a long time, and even if this was just a few hours at an airport, it was special for me. I'll be back to visit Russia properly one day, I promise.

The corridor leading to arrivals and the transfer desk was huge and very sterile looking. I didn't dare to take any pictures before I was through to airside. Just in case.

I followed signs to connecting flights and was directed to a long escalator taking me upstairs. I didn't see a single soul around. There was a sign saying “Connecting flights” to the left and “Transfer desk” to the right. Seeing as I had already done OLCI for my SU flight, and had a boarding pass, I figured I should head towards Connecting flights. As I started to do so, I was yelled at by a woman who just arrived to the transfer desk, I couldn't hear what she said, it was either in Russian or bad English, but together with her arm gestures the message was clear, I should head over there.

Once there she didn't do much, just confirmed that I was indeed checked in, had a seat assigned and had a printed boarding pass. The brief words she said was done with her eyes locked to her computer screen, even when she at the end of our “conversation” surprised me by wishing me a pleasant flight. I did thank her but I doubt she cared.

When this (seemingly unnecessary) visit to the transfer desk was taken care of, I was allowed to head towards “Connecting Flights”. As I entered this room, with a couple of security lanes. I was the only passenger around. I first had to show my boarding pass and passport to a guy at the entrance, once he was done looking at them both, he stamped my boarding pass and let me through to the next step, which was the security check. It was a humane check, no need to take my shoes off. The security staff just seemed rather bored anyway.
Next step was the passport control, this was also an easy affair, but I did have to show my boarding pass for the third time in a matter of minutes.

Once this was completed, I was allowed out to SVO's Terminal E airside.

At this time the excitement hit me again, I had completed the transit procedures at one of Moscow's airports and was waiting for my departure!

At this time the clock said about 11.00, Moscow time, and as my departure was scheduled for 15.30, I had plenty of time on my hands.

The first thing I did was to look through the D-E-F terminals at SVO, all of these are connected airside.

Terminal F is the oldest of the three terminals, which was opened in 1980 for the Moscow Olympics, the terminal was known as Sheremetyevo-2 back then. Terminal E Was opened as an extension to this terminal at a later stage, and has since been completed by Terminal D, in 2009. Aeroflot use these terminals as a hub, with their departures spread on all three terminals, depending on destination. Plenty of other airlines use these terminals too.

Terminal E was nice. The environment was calm, lots of available seats, and some nice places to shop and eat.

Terminal D was quite alright, but it was all a little crowded. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad terminal from what I could see, but the general atmosphere was a little too “chaotic” for being such a newly built terminal.

Terminal F was not really to my liking, as expected. The whole place reeked of cigarette smoke, which wasn't surprising seeing as this terminal didn't have the luxury of having smoking lounges like Terminal D and E. Here, it was just some sort of A/C boxes standing on the floor, around of which was a smoking area. There were also far to few seats, presumably replaced with retail areas, which seemed to be everywhere in this terminal. This terminal did have free WiFi though, in contrary to D and E.

I spent most of my time just sitting around, listening to music, or strolling around the shops. Most of the time was spent in Terminal E, which was the nicest one, IMO.

At one time I bought a bottle of water, supposed to cost 60 RUB, but the receipt I got was fairly unclear, so when I looked at it later I was afraid that they would have ripped me off and charged me 60 EUR! But luckily this was just a very bad receipt, and they only charged my card for the value of 60 RUB.

I also bought a model of an SAS A340, something I have been looking to buy for quite a long time. I never thought I'd finally buy it in Moscow! It cost 12 EUR.

Soon enough, boarding time was approaching, so I decided to head to the gate assigned for my flight, which was 58, at the far end of the F-terminal.

Once at the gate, I saw the Ilyushin that supposedly would bring me to Cyprus today. RA-96011, appropriately named V. Kokkinaki, after the Soviet test-pilot, awarded with the title “Hero of the Soviet Union”, twice!

So as the gate agents arrived, they prepared the gate for boarding, and then I and the other passengers just waited for boarding to begin.

And waited.

Some 20 minutes after scheduled boarding time, it was announced that boarding would commence soon.

More waiting.

I got to admit, I don't remember the exact details here, because what followed made me really worried, that I would not get to fly the Ilyushin.

Some 10 minutes after the scheduled departure time, almost an hour after boarding was supposed to commence, there was an announcement in Russian (all announcements were made in Russian first, and then in English) I didn't know what they said, but when it was interrupted by a big wave of sighs and chatter it was obvious that we wouldn't board anytime soon. I rushed to the closest FIDS to see what it was all about. My flight had a new gate, and a new departure time, at 19.00.
I never realized why all of this happened, as it was hard to understand the English announcements. I'm not even sure they gave a reason. But my best bet at that moment was some sort of technical issue with our Il-96. At this time I was extremely worried that my Il would be replaced by an Airbus. With all the money I had spent on this very flight, it was not a good feeling, I'll tell you that.

The newly assigned gate was 40, which was a bus gate. So no way of telling what aircraft I'd get in the end. All left to do was to wait.

So I sat down at one of the few seating areas in the F-terminal, luckily this was next to my new gate and a FIDS, so I could keep track of any eventual developments regarding my flight. I spent most of the time using the provided WiFi.

So after another couple of hours of waiting, and our new boarding time was approaching, people started gathering at the gate. I joined the group of people, and noticed that the LCD at the gate said that this was a completely different flight, bound for Athens. I didn't leave my spot though, since I recognized a lot of people from our first boarding attempt at the other gate, and shortly after an airport official showed up, and spoke to some of the passengers in Russian. I don't recall exactly how, but somehow I felt assured that this was indeed for Larnaca, and not for Athens.

The gate soon opened and we were let downstairs, where all there was was a scanning machine and a door leading out to the bus. So more queuing for the manned BP scanner it was.

As I queued I noted that everyone got to keep their BP stumps, and no ones seat was changed. This got my hopes up that my flight would indeed be operated by an Il-96.

Once I got closer to the gate agent I actually spotted the seatmap on the gate agents computer screen, and with a 3-3-3 arrangement I was certain that my flight was still scheduled to be operated by an Il-96. But I thought to myself that I shouldn't celebrate until I am actually boarding the plane.

The gate agent tared my A4 boarding pass and on to the bus I went. They filled every square inch of that bus, so it was extremely crowded once we departed a couple of minutes later.

We drove off to a remote apron located east of the D-E-F terminals, behind the fuel tanks. Once we got closer, I saw the Il-96 that would bring me to Cyprus. I was very glad at that point, that no equipment change had taken place in the end.

The bus dropped us off outside of the very same plane that was parked at gate 58 a few hours earlier, which was rather surprising.

Seeing as I got to board this magnificent aircraft from the apron instead of going through a jetway, it pretty much made up for any delay.

As I walked up the airstairs towards door L2 I continued to snap pictures. This was also the first time I boarded a wide-body via airstairs.

As I stepped in to the cabin I had to show my BP to a male FA, who I believe was the purser. He directed me down the first aisle to the right.

I believe all other FA's working in the economy cabin were females. During boarding they were spread out in the cabin, greeting the passengers with different levels of care.

During the walk down the aisle, I felt very exited. And boy was the cabin roomy, with the lack of overhead bins above the middle seats.

Another thing I noted during boarding was the (in?)famous SU bright orange FA uniforms. I'm not really sure what my opinions on those are.

I made my way to my seat which I chose during online check in (it wasn't available earlier), 37 A. A left hand window seat on the second to last row of this widebody.

The very last row doesn't have a window, and seeing as this far back in the cabin the layout is 2-3-2 (or rather 2-0-2 as it's a galley in the middle on the last couple of rows), I'd say that 37A is one of the best seats on this plane.

Boarding was soon completed, and the load was decent, I'd estimate around 70%. I was pretty alone at the back of the cabin, but soon after after things settled down a couple moved down to the row ahead of me.
During the time we spent on the ground the guy was chatting a little with me. He didn't know English too well but his GF translated what I said to him. They asked why a Swede would fly from Moscow to Cyprus, I explained that I wanted to fly the aircraft, which they seemed to find rather weird.

Soon enough the engine spooled up and we soon begun to move. No pushback needed as we were already turned towards the taxiway.

The crew jumped in to action, distributing drinks from their carts, beginning in the front of the cabin, so it was well in to cruise before they reached my row. Note the bright orange crew uniforms:

Once they reach my row the FA asks me something in Russian, likely “What would you like to drink”, as that is what she said in English after I made her aware of my lacking Russian skills.
I asked what was on offer, after which she quickly went through pretty much everything she had on her cart. I don't recall everything, but basically soft drinks, juices, water and wine was on offer.

I had some apple juice and some sparkling water, this was served together with a wet tissue.

I wasn't really sure what to expect when it came to service on this flight when I booked it, so when the smell of hot food filled the cabin, I was positively surprised.

Once they reached my row I could choose between two options. I chose lamb. I do not recall what the other option was, but I do remember it didn't sound bad either, it might have been chicken. Or pasta. Maybe.

Anyway, I chose lamb because it's something I don't eat every day. It tasted decent enough together with the potatoes and hot vegetables, but not really great in any way. The hot meal was served together with a plastic box filled with various extras, such as bread and a little salad.

Outside it got gradually darker during the flight, and just after the last sunshine left the skies for the day, we begun our descent to Larnaca.

The cabin crew prepared the cabin for landing, and soon enough the seatbelt sign was turned on.

Due to the dark outside, and the windows getting all foggy due to the humidity, the views outside were very limited during descent.

Soon enough we touched down on what I believe was LCA's runway 22, which meant a very short taxi to the terminal.

As I stepped out of the aircraft I could immediately feel the heat and the high humidity already in the jetway.

I walked in to the terminal and headed towards arrivals. I needed to do this since DY doesn't offer any kind of OLCI, and while there is some kind of gate check-in available I prefer to be able to choose my own seat, thank you!

There were a couple of EU immigration lines open and 2-3 non-EU. Being one of few EU citizens on a widebody from Russia had its advantages, as I was through in a couple of seconds, while the non-EU lines were rather hefty.

Through the luggage claim and customs I went and I found myself in the arrival hall.

First thing I did was to take a look around landside of LCA. The terminal was quite nice, I must say.

Here was where I spent the time waiting for check-in for my flight to open.

June 28

Around 1:00, 2:15 hours before scheduled departure time, I decided to again head upstairs to the check-in hall to see if check in was yet open. Turns out there were three desks open, and with only a couple of other passengers around I was assisted immediately. I asked for a window seat in the back, which was granted as I was assigned 31 A.

After I received my BP I headed straight for security, which only had one line open. Not that it was too little or anything, as I was through in a jiffy with only a few more passengers around.

Once airside I first bought a couple of water bottles for the red-eye flight, then I looked around the terminal a little before settling down in a quiet area where I simply just waited for my flight to depart.

During the time I was waiting I was asked some statistical questions by an airport employee. I bet my answers to questions regarding my travel plans were rather uncommon!  

Soon enough a gate was announced for my flight (LCA had the same stupid “we'll tell you your gate as late as possible” system as many British airports has), so first I went to a nearby cafe to see the bird assigned for my flight, before heading to the gate itself to wait for boarding.

Down the jetway I went to be greeted by a male FA in the forward galley of this Boeing.

I seem to recall the rest of the FA's were female, all around 30-35 years of age.

The aircraft were very clean and equipped with the SKY interior.

I sat down on my assigned 31A and surprisingly soon boarding was completed, and when things calmed down it was clear I was pretty alone in the back. The row behind me and the 3 seats across the aisle from me were all marked as “reserved”.

Once in the air and the seatbelt sign had been turned off the crew announced that they would do one BOB run now and one before landing. I decided not to bother as I wasn't hungry and I still had the water bottles I bought in the terminal.
They also announced what movies they'd show on the screens but I don't recall them as I basically didn't care at all.

At this time I was getting very tired, so as soon as they finished their BOB run, I decided to move one row forward (to give the crew slightly more room in the back of the cabin) and stretch out over the block of three seats, I quickly fell asleep.

I slept quite good and didn't wake up properly until the crew had finished their breakfast BOB run, at this time we were somewhere South of Stockholm, with some 30 minutes left for landing.

The weather was great and crisp, with not a single cloud to spot.

We sadly taxied to the domestic terminal 4, which meant we had to be bussed to international non-Schengen arrivals over at T5. I gotta say that I prefer the way SK is doing it, they tug the planes between the terminals when reallocating aircraft instead of bussing the passengers.

We were dropped off beneath Arlanda Norra where a quick passport control was waiting, and then my endeavor to fly a Soviet-Era airliner had come to an end.

To sum things up,

The trip was a success, as I managed to log the Il-96, which once in for all added a Russian jet to my log.

Estonian Air impressed me again. On my three flights with the airline I have yet to be disappointed and I like their service concept with a few freebies in Economy. Too bad they will go BOB in economy very soon, so maybe my opinion will change after my next flights with them in November, who knows?

Aeroflot wasn't overly impressive before the flight. Their website wasn't the best, and I'm very disappointed with how they handled the delay at SVO.
In the air, they were good enough. The flight wasn't cheap but at least I got a hot meal on an intra-European flight. I could see myself flying Aeroflot again in the future.
The Il-96 was a great catch. I wonder for how long they will keep the odd 6 in their fleet.

Norwegian was a pleasurable experience, not at all like my flight with them in March earlier this year ( Going Around In London! ARN-LCY/LGW-ARN (by deltamartin Apr 5 2012 in Trip Reports) ). Of course this was helped by the fact that the load was very light. But the cabin was clean and comfortable, and the free WiFi (which I didn't use this time though) is a very nice bonus.

TLL and LCA did their jobs, no complaints, I like both airports.

I was positively surprised of SVO. Not the smoothest airport for connections but easy enough, and the E and D terminals were nice (especially E). Terminal F did it's job, and was a nice flashback to another era.

Great that after all the worry about an equipment change, you finally got to ride the IL96. Congratulations. While many of the old "Soviet" aircraft are disappearing, perhaps the photo that most captures the changes that have taken place over the last few years is the one showing the meal. There you have combined what used to be the symbols of mortal enemies: Aeroflot and Coca-Cola. Who would have thought it possible only 25 years ago?

I guess SU was decent, but indeed these flights aren't that cheap--and the delay wasn't well handled at all IMO, but what could you expect at SVO, really? Eastern Europe clearly doesn't have the best customer service in the world... But, as you say, at least you got an airstair-boarding on this wide-body! It's good to get a seat in the 2-X-2.

Since you had an ongoing connection a delay could've been bad, but luckily you still made the connection back to Sweden. And, yeah, as we've said before, they really do take their question-asking seriously at LCA... Not a bad looking terminal indeed!

OV looks quite good, always nice to get some free snacks, too bad there going to do BOB in the near future. Catching the IL-96 for the first time must feel very, very good. For a minute I thought you would get an aircraft change, but luckily you didn't congrats! The meal service is looks quite good.
Flew DY for the first time last weekend and found them to be pretty nice, although it was only a flight of an hour! Nice to see there was a light load and you could get some sleep, something that barely happens to me!

Yeah, it was a nice airport to kill a few hours at. If ones walks between the F and D terminals one is experiencing two completely different airports.

There were a Burger King and a number of 'fancier' restaurants. Don't really know much about prices and offerings though, but I'm sure you'll find something suitable.

But apart from that, I really greatly enjoyed your trip report. Estonian looks like a nice little airline and their livery is very cool, especially on the Embraer. It's quite amazing how Tallinn airport has changed. The last time I was there the entire finger dock wasn't there yet. It was a nice little airport.

As for the main even, what can I say? I think you have my greatest admiration for taking it upon you to transfer at Sheremetyevo, which used to be one of the great shitholes of this world, just to catch a specific aircraft.

The Aeroflot product looks rather decent in terms of the amount of the food you get, I'm not really so convinced with the presentation in clear plastic though, looks kind of cheap.

And then there's the Il-96, what a beast! Looks as though it were built to last in the true tradition of aircraft manufacture in the former Soviet Union. I imagine the cabin must look pretty amazing if you're sitting at the back, what with the missing overhead bins.

So what were the crew like and what was the noise level in the cabin like? Would you say it was the same volume as on a Western airliner?

That picture of the meal on the Aeroflot flight with the Coca-cola and Aeroflot logo together caught my attention. When I was growing up in the 70s, nobody would ever have imagined that one day, Coca-cola would be advertising on an Aeroflot flight. My, how times have changed!

The very last row doesn't have a window, and seeing as this far back in the cabin the layout is 2-3-2 (or rather 2-0-2 as it's a galley in the middle on the last couple of rows), I'd say that 37A is one of the best seats on this plane.


We had the same seat but I had the older interior. I was in the last row on the left side of RA-960011.
At the time I flew, it was row 42.

The crew was pretty much what I expected from a Russian crew. Rather impersonal, did their job just fine but I didn't get the feeling that anyone would even think of going the extra mile (or meter). Maybe a rather vague summary but hopefully you get the point.

I can imagine! Glad to hear you flew the Il-62 though, I believe it's more difficult to get a flight on one of those than a Yak-42 nowadays? But then again, one flight on each would have been nice too, like you planned.

The Estonian E170 cabin looked very spacious and comfortable. Pretty decent meal offering too by the looks.

It's great you got to fly on an IL96, sounds like a very unique experience. With no bins in the centre, was there any issues with fitting everyone's bags in? Also, what was the noise level like, compared to planes of a simlar vintage, such as the 744 and A343?

And to top it off you got a sky-interiror 737! I'm yet to fly on one, but the cabin looks awesome. I'm a big fan of mood lighting personally.

You are correct and the seating surface was cloth. Your flight looked a lot more pleasant than mines. I was told that the IL-96 interior on my flight was actually from an older IL-86.
It was totally believable because the interior was old & beat up yet the aircraft was only 10 years old at that time. Aeroflot was putting in old interiors in to their IL-96s at that time.
My seat wasn't properly bolted to the floor so my seat acted like a rocking chair. That was my in-flight entertainment while watch drunks get in to fist-fights and stand on their heads.

I found the IL-96 interior noise to be about the same as a 777-200.
