I took this trip last summer with my friend as we aspired to complete a distant non-revenue employee trip for the long July 4th weekend.
Flights were full that weekend, and my only hope of reaching NRT involved a connection through DTW. However, ATL-DTW was also full. Thankfully, I received some insight about a 777 ferry flight from ATL to DTW to replace a 777 that was supposed to operated DTW-HND later that evening. I rushed to the airport and found DL 9975 to DTW. After speaking with the gate agent, I boarded the ferry flight with two jumpseating pilots. Including me and the pilots operating the flight, there were just five people aboard the plane.
With just three "passengers," the flight boarded quickly and pushed from ATL's E concourse. It was my first flight with DL's new herringbone BusinessElite flat-bed seats, so I took the opportunity to take many photos.

Upon arrival in DTW, my friend and I decided to catch the mid-afternoon flight to NRT instead of proceeding with our original plan to take the HND flight in the evening.

What was it like being on an almost empty 77L? That must've been an awesome flight, even though it was only ATL-DTW! So was it only your friend, yourself and the pilots? Any CC? And if it was just a ferry flight, why was it connected to the concourse? Can only employees fly the ferry flights?

My guess is that they had planned to fly the aircraft to DTW judging by the looks of the domestic blanket/pillows on the seats and couldn't find enough F/A crew to get it on a scheduled flight. And since the plane was already at the terminal, it probably made sense to get the pilots from their crew lounge to the aircraft as opposed to towing the aircraft away from the terminal and having to drive the pilots over to the TOC.
I was never lucky enough to get to fly on a ferry flight like the one above, however, I do vividly remember (and there's a trip report to prove it!) an extra section 744 flying from DTW-NRT a few years back recently after the merger was completed and we could non-rev on NW. The flight was booked to a whopping 30 or 40 passengers, including 14 positive space crew and a handful of nonrevs. It was my first truly long haul flight (not counting europe as long haul) and I couldn't sleep so I walked around the aircraft and it was eerie as they placed everyone in coach in the forward part of the 744 and roped off the back section of the aircraft.
I have had several times where I have been one of a few in J (with Y overflowing) since and have yet to experience anything like the emptiness of a 744.
And emirates202, if the aircraft isn't going for a mx ferry (read = special permit flight), only employees may ride due to no f/a's on board. If it's a mx ferry, then it's the flight crew only.

Nice report. It must have been fun on that empty 777. The closeset I have come to that was several years ago I did GSE for Tradewinds and we flew GEO-JFK with 10 pax so the crew put every one in the fwd cabin and we had the rest of the plane to relax.

The original aircraft that was scheduled to fly DTW-HND had a maintenance issue, so this 777 ferried to DTW to operate the HND flight. No cabin crew were aboard and only employees could ride as non-revenue customers, but FAA regulations limit to 19 the numbers of passengers without having cabin crew.
