Part 1 can be found here: JFK-BCN-JFK On AA (Sadly) Part 1 100+ Photos (by FlyingFan18 Sep 15 2012 in Trip Reports)

After spending an amazing 7 nights on the beautiful NCL Epic and 1 night in beautiful Barcelona it was time to go home. The only thing I could think of was trying to brace myself for the tight 8 hour ride home. I tried looking on the AA website if I can at least upgrade my dad and I to business or even a row with more legroom such as an emergency exit row (I’m 17 so it wasn’t an issue) but, in shock the flight was 100% booked. There was not one seat available and I was stuck in the terribly tight economy seat. Rather depressed we headed to the airport and braced ourself for a rather long flight home to the U.S.

Departure: We arrive to Barcelona’s beautiful airport. I really was impressed with the international side and was pleased with the services. We had to self check-in which was a pain. Whatever happened to just walking up to a counter and having them check you in. I don’t even know why we self checked-in because we had to just get online to drop our bags and she took our ticks anyway. Anyway, enough of my confusion let’s start posting pictures;

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1434.jpg
The rather long Vueling check-in. I just found out Vueling is based in Barcelona and is a LCC. Anyone have any info on them or trip reports, I would love reading them!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1435.jpg
This is my Uncle and I checking in for our flight. Notice the rather long line behind us to drop off our bags. AA was checking in both flights, one for JFK and the other to MIA.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1436.jpg
Bag drop time. I loved these machines, pretty cool and also going into my future airport, well the one in my head that is.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1437.jpg
From my understanding the international part of Barcelona is on top of the domestic part or where Vueling is located. This picture is showing the Vueling part of the terminal.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1438.jpg
Indeed this is Vueling territory.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1439.jpg
This rather confused me, a Singapore Airlines flight to Sao Paulo? It was on an Singapore Airlines aircraft as well, anyone have any details on it?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1440.jpg
First view of my 767 to JFK.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1441.jpg
Closer up view of my 767. It seemed different but I couldn’t tell why until I noticed the rather interesting logo on the aircraft. Anyone know why it is the Spirit of San Francisco?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1442.jpg
Boarding was called late… what a surprise. Finally we boarded and I was met with our neighbor a BA A319/20 heading to London.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1443.jpg
I just love the 767… to bad it is in AA livery though.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1444.jpg
A bad shot of the logo on the aircraft. Not sure what it is just quite yet, maybe you do?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1445.jpg
Spirit of San Francisco it is?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1446.jpg
View from my seat, this Iberia aircraft just pulled up and emptied in a matter of minutes.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1447.jpg
A pretty cool private aircraft passing by. I know being an Airliner I should probably of know what aircraft it is but I don’t… anyone of you know?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1448.jpg
Taxing to our first runway, yes you heard me right first runway.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1449.jpg
Lining up with our first runway.

Soon after spending a couple of minutes on the runway with a few aircrafts waiting behind us we started our roll. Only then did I realize I was experiencing my first aborted take-off. We stopped our roll and got off on a couple of taxiways down and nothing said just sat there. We then started our taxi but the wrong way back to the gates. I of course try staying cool even though I realized that this is a possible aircraft issue and we may be canceled. I immediately go through my head trying to figure out other ways home thinking about the Delta flight, the BA flight through London, the Iberia flight through Madrid… being an Airliner I just hoped secretly I can find us another way home. Finally an announcement was made stating that everything is fine just had to do a runway change. I figured we where to heavy for that runway and had to go to a bigger one.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1450.jpg
Heading towards our second runway.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1451.jpg
Sadly we are off… well there goes my airline wish of being canceled.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1452.jpg
Breaking through some clouds.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1453.jpg
Bye Spain, see you soon on a different airline, hopefully.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1454.jpg
It was an amazing day for flying.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1456.jpg
The wonderful (yea right… they where rude as hell) flight attendants at work.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1457.jpg
Tray table set up for my wonderful airline food. Truly that wasn’t sarcasm I thought the food was good, or maybe my cramped legs where cutting off circulation to my brain… anyway it was good.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1458.jpg
What a surprise, chicken and rice.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1460.jpg
My mom modeling the wonderful salad dressing.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1461.jpg
Did I metion this was AA?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1462.jpg
Over water this time. There goes my view looking outside.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1463.jpg
I somehow managed to watch a TV series on my Mac.

I got bored and the seats where killing me so I decided to do a tour of the plane… well from my seat cause I couldn’t move literally.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1465.jpg
Don’t you guys love the 50’s wallpaper?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1466.jpg
Showing the rather interesting seat design. My dad got up to use the lavatory when I snapped this picture.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1467.jpg
My wonderful feet showing off the rather aged carpet. Why don’t airlines use like wood or something to make it more home feeling… I always wondered this.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1468.jpg
Oh my… what a surprise 20 year old TV’s!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1469.jpg
The cabin is quite aged… hopefully AA will consider at least updating the seats… but with my luck make the seats thinner and more uncomfortable.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1470.jpg
You can’t tell but I am stuck in my seat.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1471.jpg
Yay for tight seats!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1472.jpg
Almost there… yes? No? Maybe so?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1473.jpg
No land yet…

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1474.jpg
YAY land! We are somewhere over Canada… I think.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1475.jpg
Pre-arrival meal. Oh yea by the way with our drinks on the way back we didn’t get a snack. Not sure why but we just didn’t before our main meal.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1476.jpg
Yum?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1477.jpg
Oh by the way I am on AA… just saying.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1478.jpg
I guess AA is trying to be nice by giving us a plastic fork and knife to cut there hard as hell pizza.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1479.jpg
Only good thing was this cookie.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1480.jpg
I love tomato juice in a plane, just something about it.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1481.jpg
Ocean again… really?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1482.jpg
Yup, this is definitely North America… based on the roads that is.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1483.jpg
Yup this definitely is the USA now.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1484.jpg
Time to play guess that airport… anyone know?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1485.jpg
Descending time… thank you lord!

Round two of guess that airport… anyone know?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1487.jpg
I assume we are crossing the sound into Long Island.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1489.jpg
Round three of guess that airport… anyone know?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1490.jpg
Wait there is more… round 4… anyone know?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1491.jpg
Closer and closer we get.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1492.jpg
Flaps down.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1493.jpg
On final into JFK.

Slowing with the storm approaching fast!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1497.jpg
Terminal 4 is progressing nicely… I think I will try Delta next time I fly international.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1498.jpg
Pretty nice terminal progress.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1499.jpg
The old terminal 3 or current Delta terminal. Delta will be destroying this iconic terminal in the near future and just using terminal 2 and 4.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1500.jpg
Terminal 2 which is basically delta connection flying I believe.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1501.jpg
Terminal 1 the original international terminal I think.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1502.jpg
A Russian visitor.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1503.jpg
A jumbo Korean visitor. Sorta amazing how the A380 can fit at terminal 1.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1504.jpg
A Japanese visitor.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1505.jpg
A rather small French visitor. I thought AF sends there A380 here… didn’t know they send a smaller A330/40. I thought it was only B777 and higher.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1506.jpg
Finally the AA terminal.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1507.jpg
A South American friend.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1508.jpg
No Vueling territory here just AA aircrafts.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1509.jpg
How much worst could this 767 be compared to this one… probably not much.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1510.jpg
Pulling in next to an AA 757 probably from Miami.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1511.jpg
Finally off this tight plane!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1513.jpg
Wouldn’t this be nice for an 8 hour flight?

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1514.jpg
Maybe in the future my friend, maybe in the future.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1516.jpg
Let’s go to customs… yay!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1517.jpg
Bye bye.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1518.jpg
One last look at the sticker.

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1522.jpg
Bye 767… thanks for the tight ride!

http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/FlyingFan18/Part2/IMG_1524.jpg
Last picture heading down and around towards customs… yay!

Conclusion: In all honestly even though I did joke around it was an okay flight. AA got us from point A to point B safe and fast. The seats where tight and there was no entertainment but as they say you pay for what you get. I can see AA in the future having a tough time because to be honest everyone else offers a better product to them. Delta has leather seats and TVs and that is who they are going up against on the JFK-BCN market. I think if I had the choice I would of connected through a different airline but hey you get what you get and you can’t be that upset.

Well uhmmm... I guess that makes sense then. The flight looked pretty booked and it was probably a 777-200.

Good report, thanks for sharing! It seems like you had a pretty ok flight!

SQ does Singapore-Barcelona-Sao Paulo

The rather long Vueling check-in. I just found out Vueling is based in Barcelona and is a LCC. Anyone have any info on them or trip reports, I would love reading them!

Well, you'd think AA is much more roomier after a flight with them!

Greetings

Hey,

I thoroughly enjoyed your reports, AA seem to be an airline lost in time!

Your report brings back memories of my dad complaining when he was flying with them from Dublin to Las Vegas via Chicago a few years back, seems like little has changed!
For me personally I flew with Zoom airlines and was quite surprised comparing to your experience that they beat AA with a friendly crew, leather seats and an inch or two more legroom!
Anyway I hope AA get their act together and upgrade their long haul cabin product, or will they change nothing and unofficially be a Transatlantic low carrier?

Nicely summed up, I cant help but to recommend EI simply for recent good word and my patriotic side   I hope your next trip to Europe is a more comfortable one!

Happy flying,

James

I think if AA went all LCC on the transatlantic route we could be talking. Let’s just say if they removed Business, which honestly is today’s Premium Economy seating, and replaced it with all economy they could probably increase legroom and still have an LCC. I doubt AA would do that though. Let’s see what happens if a merge with US actually comes true. Two terrible airlines become one… how bad can it be?

Sounds like a win win scenario, although If this merger goes ahead I would hate to see the iconic AA livery vanish or be stained by US branding. I hope a satisfactory new brand can be formed successfully.

Hi there FlyingFan,

Nice to be able to read your return journey as well.
AA doesn't look impressive once again, thats too bad. Looks like they are using their aircraft without PTVs on this route, such a shame. The food looks quite ok for an US airline

In general, the seating on most 767's in Y are the same between non LCC carriers.

You're 17... How did you develop such a negative perspective so quickly? Your TR had a pretty negative tone throughout.

In his defence, a bad product is a bad product regardless of the age with which you experience it. The report was probably written after the flights, by which point the negative perception was validated....and it seeped through.

I thought it was a very well-written report - entertaining, informative etc. I've never flown AA (entirely out of choice)... so this is the closest I will ever get to finding out what its like to fly with them. BY the looks of it, thats probably a good thing. That seat pitch looks like it was 31".

Even though I am probably one of the youngest Airlines, I do know my airline stuff and have traveled many times in and out of the United States. Plus I didn’t say it was all bad I enjoyed all the food, besides the pizza.

I believe it was around 30’ ElPistoero and according to SeatGuru (I know it isn’t reliable) it is.

Thanks for sharing! Hope you enjoyed your Epic cruise. I love this ship.

AA seems to be quite standard service, legroom seems indeed a little time, but I believe this is what you can expect from a US carrier. They all serve the pizza   Shame about the PTV though, but on some European routes they also use 767 without PTV and uncomfortable old blue leather seats (however with nice pitch).

I enjoyed reading about AA's Transatlantic service and this was very interesting.
