Hello and welcome to my trip report covering four flights I recently had with Turkish Airlines from Bangkok to Nice via Istanbul and return. I report will be in two parts: the first part will cover the outbound flights: BKK-IST-NCE, and the final part will have some destination pictures as well as the return NCE-IST-BKK. I hope you enjoy reading.
Some background information about the trip, well, it all began when my mother saw an advertisement of a 6-day all inclusive package tour to the French Riviera at a rather attractive price, and the dates of this trip were perfect that all of our family members were free to go on the trip. So my parents bought the package for all five of us. Airlines and routing were picked by the travel company, and it turned out to be Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. To me, it was a great choice as this would be my first flight with Turkish Airlines. Also, two of us have a gold status with Star Alliance so we could enjoy the benefit of lounge access pre-departure and during the 3-hour transit in Istanbul. But this means that one person would be left out from accessing the lounge, so my father decided to buy himself Business class to remedy that.
Here is the detail of the first leg,
Date: 7 September 2012
Airline: Turkish Airlines
Flight: TK69
Route: BKK-IST
Class: Economy
Aircraft: Airbus A330-300
Registration: TC-JNL
We arrived at the airport around 2:30 hours before the flight departure time. We headed to Turkish Airlines check-in zone and looked for our tour company representative. We found out that all other people in our group have already checked-in and proceeded through passport check. So we walked to Turkish Airlines check-in desk. But before we got to it, we were approached by two ground staff who asked us if we were flying with Turkish Airlines, and when we said yes, one of the agents put a Turkish Airlines sticker on my polo shirt while the other one put a carry-on tag to my hand luggage. I suppose the reason for putting TK logo sticker was to easily identify its passengers for when TK staff had to go and look for them when the flight was closing.
Check-in area was quite empty at the time we got there, so we went straight to an empty counter. Then we got our boarding passes directly to Nice and our baggage was checked through to Nice as well. We were told that we could use any of Thai Airways lounges at Bangkok Airport. I asked the check-in agent about the load on the flight to Istanbul, and after a few seconds checking in the system, he replied that around 10 seats were unsold in Economy.
Then we were off to Passport check, there was quite a long line for the Thai and Foreign (manual) passport check counters. But as a Thai passport holder, we could use the automatic machine which had a much smaller waiting line, so we went to use the machine was done within minutes, even though I’d prefer to go to the counter to get a stamp on my passport. Security check was done straight after passport control, and it was empty, so we got through within minutes.
Seeing that our boarding gate was in concourse G, we headed to Thai Airways lounge in concourse E which I believed was the closest TG lounge to our gate.
The lounge was quite busy due to a number of European-bound flights departing around mid-night time. Nonetheless we managed to find five seats together in the lounge.
Some pictures of the lounge
Snacks I had while waiting for the flight
At the boarding time, we left the lounge for the boarding gate in concourse G, passing the dayrooms (transit hotel)
Due to the design of the terminal, it was impossible to see anything outside the building
When we got to the gate, our flight was already on final call and most of the passengers have already boarded the plane
At the aircraft door, the chef-on-board welcomed passengers, and another crew member distributed an amenity bag. As I stepped inside the cabin, the cabin temperature was uncomfortably hot. At our seats, we found a pillow, a blanket and a pair of headphones.
The cabin
Amenity bag
In-flight entertainment system was already switched on: the system has over 100 films and 100 music albums. For the night flight, I didn’t make much use of it
But I did switch to the forward camera
Push back was more or less on time
Took off!
Leg room
Remote control and headphones
When the seatbelt sign was switched off, the crew came over and distributed menu
The two options for main course were grilled chicken breast or ‘plakapong’ with green curry. Interesting to see the word ‘plakapong’ written in the menu, this is a Thai word for sea bass.
Map of the flight
Very slowly, the crew served dinner together with drinks. I chose the fish with white wine.
Gardenfresh seasonal salad
Fried eggplants and peppers with tomato sauce
Fish with green curry, vegetable and rice
Sour cherry cake
By the time the crew came to collect the dinner tray, we were almost over India
Then the crew handed out a packet of nuts and drinks. I would have thought that this should come before the meal.
Finally, drink bottles were given to everyone before the cabin light was turned off. I slept for most of the next 6 hours, though not comfortable. Woke up when the cabin light was turned on and went to the lavatory, and it was in a rather dirty state.
Breakfast was served, together with coffee and orange juice. Notice the coffee was served in a plastic drinking cup, rather than a coffee cup.
There was only one option for breakfast:
Seasonal fresh fruit
Assorted cheese
Scrambled eggs with tomatoes and green peppers, turkey ham and cheese toast, grill cherry tomato
Cabin taken during breakfast
Safety card
Reading materials and puzzles
Soon later, the cabin crew prepared the cabin for landing. We landed in Istanbul around 30 minutes ahead of schedule time.
The airport looks quite empty
My seat
Disembarked the plane
After leaving the plane, we only had to walk a short distance to proceed to transfer, where our next-flight boarding pass was checked and had to go through security x-ray. The line for transfer was very long, but it moves very fast and we didn’t have to wait for longer than 10 minutes until we were clear.
Next stop was the Turkish Airlines lounge. When we arrived at the lounge, there was a long line of passengers waiting to be admitting to the lounge. Those holding Business Class ticket can enter by scanning their boarding pass. Status passengers have to present our boarding pass and frequent flyer card before being allowed to enter. The lounge was very busy so I didn’t take pictures inside. I will include some pictures of the lounge in the next part on the return trip. For the lounge, there were hot breakfast available, but as I didn’t feel hungry, I only had small snacks.
After the lounge visit, we headed directly to our boarding gate
Some pictures taken along the way
The waiting area of our bus gate was quite packed. But after 10 minutes of waiting, our flight was called to board: by seat row number. As our seats were towards the front of the Economy Class cabin, we were one of the last groups to board the bus (on the second bus).

Here is the detail of the second flight:
Date: 8 September 2012
Airline: Turkish Airlines
Flight: TK1813
Route: IST-NCE
Class: Economy
Aircraft: Boeing 737-800
Registration: TC-JFO
Once on the bus, I took some pictures during the ride to our aircraft
At the aircraft door we were welcomed on board by a crew member, then made our way to our row, sat down and it was right on time for departure
Leg room
For some reasons, the aircraft door was still not closed, and as I was quite tired from the previous flight, I had a quick sleep. Then 45 minutes later, the captain announced that we were waiting for a crew member to arrive, then we would be ready to go, and it should take another 10 minutes. The captain also apologised for the delay.
When everybody boarded the plane, we were ready to go
Took off
Safety Card
Then menu and nuts were distributed
Headphones were handed out
Cabin
Breakfast was served
White Cheese, gouda cheese, black and green olives
Scrambled eggs, turkey ham and cheese toast, grilled tomatoes and green peppers. This main course was very more-or-less the same as the breakfast I had on the previous leg BKK-IST
For the rest of the flight, I had a sleep for around 2 hours. Woke up when the crew prepared the cabin for landing
Descending to Nice
Touched down
Parked at a remote stand
My seat
Disembarking the aircraft
Our aircraft
A quick bus ride took us to the terminal, passport check counters were pretty much empty so we got clear in around 5 minutes or so. Heading to the baggage belt and after a few minutes wait, our bags arrive on the belt.
This would conclude the first part of the trip report. The next part will cover the return trip from Nice to Istanbul on Airbus A320-200 and from Istanbul to Bangkok on Airbus A340-300. . Thank you for reading. All comments and questions are very much appreciated.

Hi Win,
very nice report, always good to read about TK which I really like. However, the A333 interior doesn't look as nice as the ones I had on my A332 and A343 flights last year. Here's my report:
Quoting win1290 (Thread starter): Very slowly, the crew served dinner together with drinks. I chose the fish with white wine.

The meals look fine in general, but the portions seem to be a bit small. How did you like all the food? I found TK's DO&CO catering very good, but it still cannot match EK's catering. What I have heard numerous times is an alleged lack of variety on TK.

Quoting MH017 (Reply 2): Lucky you, so you had 4 different aircraft-types on 4 flights ?
Thats right! though at the time of booking, the BKK-IST-BKK sectors were scheduled on A340-300, but at some point later the BKK-IST got changed to A330, which was very nice as I got the chance to be on TK new cabin.
Quoting MH017 (Reply 2): Would be interested on your dad's Business-Class flights; did he mention anything to you about these ?
Well, my dad wasn't quite impressed with flying TK unfortunately. He said that toilets were very poorly maintained, the seat was too hard even though it was lie flat. In my opinion, a big factor that made us feel less comfortable was the cabin temperature, it was either too warm or way too cold. But the good thing was that TK's price was very competitive in both Economy and Business class.
Quoting MH017 (Reply 2): Looking forward to your return part...
Glad to hear , I will try to finish it within the week
Quoting debonair (Reply 3): WOW! Menu card, hot breakfast and IFE - unbelievable for an intra European flight! Really amazing! Hopefully the quality of the meal was as good as it looked!
Hi Debonair, I agree, the inflight offering was great for a European flight! The breakfast tasted good, but I'd prefer the breakfast on flight BKK-IST.
Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 4): And a welcome change from your usual airline Thai Airways lol
Haha thats true,
Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 4): Well I'm glad it all worked out. Since you and your mum fly a lot and probably have the gold status, I guess the other two were your guests? lol
thanks. Actually, its me and my brother who have the gold status. We could guest in one person each, in our trip, it was our mum and another brother.
Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 4): That is almost like a full Y class meal on some carriers (wink)
I noticed some improvements in the food offering in the lounge recently. A selection of canape is a great addition to the food bar.
Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 4): It would be nice to use this someday, when the connection at BKK is really long.
took a quick look inside, I must say it looks quite nice.
Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 4): I guess they wanted to give the menu a real Thai feel with that local name addition!!

Thanks Matthew!
Turkish Airlines has very good inflight service routine and inflight products in my opinion. But as I have experienced during my first four flights with them, there were a few crew members who didn't seem to be in good mood, and this is probably the biggest let down.
I think the food offering on TK is quite good, especially one on the shorter European flight.

I think the food tasted good in all flights I had. But I'd prefer the ones from flight from Bangkok, which I believe is from Bangkok Airways catering. I didn't think there was a lack of variety in TK catering. Actually, the only thing I find lacking in terms of variety is breakfast: TK offered the same breakfast on the 3 flights I had.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 6): Nice, it will be interesting to see how your A343 flight was.

Thanks James! The screens look quite similar, but I think on VS, its only touch screen with no remote control, whereas TK still use remote controls. I don't mind the in-ear earphones actually. They are not uncomfortable at all, and yes we got to keep them.

Thanks! Where are you heading?
Quoting deltamartin (Reply 9): Nice to see they even included a drinks list, something I find very useful.
I agree, not many airlines have a drink list for Y.
Quoting deltamartin (Reply 9): Wow, menu card on a shorthaul flight! Very impressive, can't wait to try them out.
I was pleasantly surprised when the menu was given and the hot breakfast offered on TK European flight. I didn't expect it, it was great.

Nice report, thanks for sharing it with us.
Turkish looks to have great service on the majority of it's flights. While the BKK-IST sector is top notch I find the hard on the NCE flight to be a bit outdated. Neverthless the soft product exceeds it's competitors on both legs.

Kon khun krub Nong Win. Thank you for all your nice and prompt pics.
Once again a fine trip report on your family trip to the south of France.
TK is very popular among Thai tourists as they offer such extensive network in Europe.
You can fly via IST and arrive in other smaller Schengen city to avoid changing plane in larger cities dealing with passport stamp and re-board the flight.
My mom and sister went to Spain and Portugal with TK arriving in Barcelona and departed from Lisbon.
I much prefer the newer 330-300 interior of TK. It's fresh and young looking, the interior of 330-200 and 340-300 are dated and boring. Also the current Weber seats on the 330-300 fleet are looking nicer.
I don't like the fact that TK serves same breakfast, you get the same breakfast from your arrival longhaul and early morning intra Europe ex-IST flights. This happened even in Business class where all the starters/smaller items are same items.
Do&Co makes food looks good and interesting, but it's just for the sake of brand name. Doesn't really stand out over the other Asian carrier.
Food ex-BKK used to be from THAI catering, not sure as of now as could be Bangkok Airways' as Win mentioned. But I much prefer THAI catering than PG's.
TK is one decent airlines. New aircrafts, Asian carriers' service standard and extensive route network, reasonable price. Not to mention being *A choice over the gulf carrier for Asia-Europe connection.
Thank you and can't wait for the second part

Thanks a lot for this report. I was worried to read another horrible report, but this one seemed to have some of the magic of the TK I have loved. The food on the BKK/IST segment looks really good.

Hi Marc,
Thanks for reading and commenting.
Turkish Airlines offer some great inflight service, I particularly like the amenity kit. But I must say that the crew were mixed, some were good, one or two weren't.
Sawatdee krub P'Net!
Many thanks for the kind words krub.
I agree, TK has an extensive network in Europe, especially in secondary airports. Connecting through IST was with ease. Even though, the transit lane in IST was very busy but it went very fast. Plus, during transit I also got to sample the Turkish ice-cream which was nice .
Very nice, I always want to visit Lisbon and Barcelona!
I slightly prefer the new A330 cabin over the older A340 one, it feels new and fresh!
The same breakfast on the connecting flight and the long haul may be boring to TK frequent travellers. But as a TK first time flyer, I quite like the spicy breakfast. In fact, I think the one on BKK-IST flight was a lot more spicy than the IST-NCE.
Catering-wise, I food ex-BKK was much to my liking than the food offered on flights ex-IST.
Turkish Airlines offer some great inflight service with really good inflight entertainment system. Perhaps I was unlucky on the flights I had, but TK would have been an amazing airline if the crew were more friendly and service-minded.
Quoting abrelosojos (Reply 15): Thanks a lot for this report. I was worried to read another horrible report, but this one seemed to have some of the magic of the TK I have loved. The food on the BKK/IST segment looks really good.

I certainly didn't find Turkish Airlines unpleasant. The inflight service routine was very nice, but the crew were mixed.
I quite like the dish I chose on the BKK-IST sector too, always nice to find my native dish, which is also one of my favourite too, on board.
Great report... really nice to see Turkish offering on this route. It all looked really great and it is impressive to get the second hot meal on the first sector.

Hi Brendan, thanks for reading and for the nice words. I am glad you liked it. TK do offer some solid inflight service in Economy (good amenity, inflight entertainment etc,) and if you have a nice, professional, friendly crew on board, the flight would be super. Yep, agree
Quoting adamspotter (Reply 17): From the looks of it TK flies Ho Cho Minh city to Bangkok before heading back to IST?
Thats right! though I didn't notice if passengers travelling from Ho Chi Minh to Istanbul were asked to remain on board in Bangkok. But on the return flight IST-BKK-SGN, passengers connecting to SGN were asked to remain in the aircraft.
