Hi there,

Welcome to my 3rd TR.

I did this short trip about 8 months ago and I had no expectation whatsoever about the product/services on board PR fleets, esp on their C Class during this short hop to CGK. PR doesn't really get a lot of publicity, thus it can be quite difficult to google for reviews. This TR will hopefully do some justice to PR

PR operates from T2 Changi, check-in counters are located somewhere near MI's.

Was issued an invitation to use SATS Premier Lounge

Can't remember the last time I stepped my foot here...the facade looks somewhat more modern now

There was only another single soul sharing the lounge with me...dead quiet. I wonder if this is normal..hmmm

A well stocked-up lounge

Was told that there was no PTV, but this is not true. Not that it really matters as this was just a short flight.

The not so modern C class seats, but nonetheless very very comfy

Absolute full Y class, but 6/12 only in C
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/405388_2897640273536_1036236163_32951832_667726109_n.jpg

Now, this is where the first impression counts! A steward came by and started greeting me using my name and offering me welcome drinks. I chose their signature mango smoothie which turned out to be absolute heaven. It was thick and very tasty

Then, the Safety Video started screening...I thought this was really good, catchy and easily remembered.

The headset was a bit of a let down though...very subpar quality

The plane just took off to a bright and sunny day...I just love the bright blue sky

Reading Materials on board....and yes, the far right is the Menu! PR does offer a proper Menu on this short flight
http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/402753_2897648873751_1036236163_32951850_1514732297_n.jpg

Hmm...table cloth, done 1 by 1....good

Let's see what we have in the menu

I opted for the Sea Bass...and expecting the full tray with everything in it (just like in the case of SQ/GA to CGK), PR serves starter tray first instead! This is getting very much like a long-haul flight setup...loved it.
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/429090_2897653913877_1036236163_32951856_1961949299_n.jpg

I must say the tangy sauce goes very well with the prawn and pomelo. Good job PR...

Curious with what "artisan bread" was, I ordered one and got this...very soft and tasty
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/395189_2897654873901_1036236163_32951857_747675217_n.jpg

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/404392_2897653393864_1036236163_32951855_599024156_n.jpg

A variety of condiments available

There comes the main course....it may look a little on the dry side, but the fish meat was very tender and juicy on the inside
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/402112_2897655673921_1036236163_32951858_1680200197_n.jpg

Just when my tummy was about to explode, the crew came with a tray of fruits for passengers to select. The selection contained bananas, apples, grapes, pears and oranges. I didnt opt for the fruit as I was waiting for the sinful dessert
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/424708_2897657353963_1036236163_32951863_862568315_n.jpg

OK, it's not Haagen Daz...so what? And who says PR doesnt serve Haagen Daz? Wait for the return leg

The crew finished off the service with a warm towel service...about 30 mins prior to arrival at CGK.

With few minutes remaining before landing, I started to dig into their IFE
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/422229_2897649273761_1036236163_32951851_1644111615_n.jpg
Not a bad selection considering the short flight. No blockbuster movies offered though as these are only available for med to long haul flights according to the crew.

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/397855_2897660954053_1036236163_32951870_1534409490_n.jpg

Managed to purchase some diecasts too

Not only PR was on time, we arrived in CGK 15 mins ahead of the schedule. Kudos

Was the return leg as good and smooth an experience as the previous flight? Let's find out soon

Check-in was fast at CGK, and the staff manning the check-in counter was obviously very senior. She greeted every pax with smile and light jokes that definitely cheered up the flying mood.

Lounge at CGK was Premier Loung...too (coincidentally the same name as the SIN lounge)
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/426051_2897665754173_1036236163_32951880_1323064826_n.jpg

Having been to some of the handful lounges at CGK, I probably say that this one is above the average.
http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/396525_2897664874151_1036236163_32951878_1203721302_n.jpg

Flight on-time too, I headed straight to the plane for boarding

Senior purser greeted all passengers upon entering

I reckon PR should change their uniforms...a little too outdated for current fashion trend, dont u think?
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/424667_2897667514217_1036236163_32951884_939661142_n.jpg

Again, a load of 6/12 in C...and again, I chose the mango smoothie (just like the pax sitting next to me). It was truly delicious
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/429926_2897668274236_1036236163_32951885_1662106264_n.jpg

Menu for today's flight:

See the word "Haagen Dazs" there? hehe....

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/417943_2897670154283_1036236163_32951888_1659887915_n.jpg

This berrilicious stuff is indeed very yummy
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/418315_2897670874301_1036236163_32951890_1984338739_n.jpg

I opted for their signature beef stew meal which the crew strongly recommended and it was one of the best beef stews i've ever had.
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/432305_2897671954328_1036236163_32951891_514450159_n.jpg

I skipped the fruit and ice cream as I was too full by the time I finished the meal. Just a coffee will do, please. The coffee was okay, but the mango chocolate next to it was heavenly!
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/404790_2897672954353_1036236163_32951893_648768233_n.jpg

The flight again arrived ahead of the schedule.

1 word to describe PR: fantastic! I didnt know what to expect before, but now I look forward to more flights with PR. Great and attentive service, delicious and generous F&B on board. Have I done justice to PR by publishing this TR? I hope so...

Thanks for reading guys

Hi groomyjl

Nice trip report on Philippine Airlines (PR).
Your TR brought back memories on the wonderful flight I had onboard PR J class, on the exact same routing as you did, SIN-CGK-SIN last year.

Meal presentation and serving was good for the duration of flight, and I saw some improvements that PR had made in their meal services on your report, such as the introduction of menu, and usage of real cup to serve your hot coffee. There were no menus and the tea was served on styro cup during my flight back in 2011.

Anyway, I was glad to see that PR has still maintain their good level of services and impressed even more people. Personally I think that they deserve more credit for their great service, and seems your TR had done justice for them.

Thanks for sharing!

Regards,
Dirktraveller

Wow I have to say that's some pretty impressive catering for a 1.5 hour flight. You get a full proper starter, a full main course (and it doesn't seem as though PR has cut corners anywhere in their main dish choices), assorted and two desserts!? That does indeed knock GA and SQ off the mantle a bit doesn't it. Wonder what TK offers up on this route? We all can assume that LH doesn't offer scratch compared to PR on this route so they are a moot point

Honestly, I think PR offers the best service in J between SIN and CGK. The only downside is their non-daily schedule. How I wish they could offer daily flights since PR flies to SIN 3x daily anyway.

Indeed PR offers very impressive catering here for a flight duration of just 1 hour 25 mins. It was truly beyond my expectation. TK does not offer 5th freedom flights between SIN and CGK anymore since late last year I think, therefore I can't tell you what their service is like. However a friend of mine who flew TK Y last year from SIN to CGK told me that the service was pretty crappy. A super mini cold wrap was all he got + a glass of drink (no top up). Worst of all, the crew was somewhat very cranky.

Wow. Impressed by PR on this short route. I have only flown them a few times (despite having worked at the ADB for 1.5 years and a Manila posting), and they have usually been above average - nothing remarkable, but not anything that made me avoid them.

Thanks for writing.

that could be quite true, as PR recently dropped its own inflight catering and its inflight catering was handed to a new comer skykitchen. I think PR is trying to improve their food onboard, they recently signed in some top chefs in PH to improve their offerings at least in J CLASS (i dont know about Y) one of them was Myrna Segismundo who created your Morcon dish.

I also have heard that they will replace their very old uniforms soon.. hopefully very soon. can someone correct me if I am mistaken.

another nice report, PR's C Class product looks fine. I considered flying PR between SIN and CGK last year and between SIN and MNL this year...I should finally do it.

Quoting groomyjl (Thread starter):

The seats are okay, similar to the ones on EgyptAir 738s. Totally sufficient for medium and short haul flights. If you want to compare:

If you flew after October 2011, that was part of the problematic transition PR had with its new service providers. These problems cleared themselves up at the start of this year.

Yes, they are changing the uniforms soon. To think these uniforms have been around since the Asian financial crisis!

Note that MNL-SIN-CGK v/v will be upgraded to A330 service starting October 28 (the timetables say EQV, but with the reduction in frequencies on such a high-traffic route this should mean bigger planes, with the A330 most likely to be deployed). While that means a bigger plane, it also means a poorer hard product compared to the A320s. Although with the new planes coming in starting next year, I wonder how well the new hard product will be compared to SQ.

Reduction in frequencies? Did you mean to say the reduction on SIN-CGK sector? Is it confirmed?? That's really too bad when I wish they had increased it to daily instead

The reduction is for MNL-SIN. SIN-CGK still remains four times weekly.

Thanks for the report, food looks better than SQ F on CGK-SIN, from SIN you can of course order lobster in both premium cabins. But still SQ's arrogance of serving the crap they do on SIN-CGK/DPS/BKK is not appropriate.

So, did you or are you finally going to do it? Well, you should do it

I may do it on my next trip to SIN - whenever that may be.

That's interesting...I seriously never (not once) experience the arrogance of SQ crew in all my coming to 90th flight soon

Anyway, thanks for reading.
