Hello and welcome to the second part of my trip report on Thai Airways Airbus A380 trip to Hong Kong. The first part of the report can be found here THAI's A380 Inaugural: BKK-HKG, October 2012 (by win1290 Oct 6 2012 in Trip Reports). This report will cover the return flight from Hong Kong to Bangkok.

Here are the details for the flight:
Date: 7 October 2012
Airline: Thai Airways International
Flight: TG601
Route: HKGBKK
Class: Economy
Aircraft: Airbus A380-800
Registration: HS-TUA

To travel to the airport from my hotel in Causeway bay, I took an underground from Causeway bay station (which located opposite my hotel) to Central Station, and from Hong Kong Central Station, I took an Airport Express train to the airport which took around 30 minutes.

A few steps away, I entered the check-in zone in terminal 2, where Thai Airways check-in area locates.

I headed to an empty Business Class/*G counter and asked to be check-in to Bangkok. I also asked whether it was possible to get a window seat on the upper deck and after briefly looking in the system, the check-in lady consulted her supervisor. The check-in supervisor then told me that this flight was quite empty in Economy class and, for this reason, the Economy class on the upper deck will be closed. He then offered me two options: a window seat on the emergency exit row of Economy class (row 31), or non-emergency row but he will guarantee I have three seats on my own. I accepted the latter. Then I got my boarding pass and lounge invitation, I thanked the agent.

Then I proceed to passport control and security check, it was completely empty and I got through in minutes.

Then I got back to my seat, and when the inflight manager came pass, I asked him whether it would be possible to visit the Economy class section on the upper deck. He replied ‘Of course’ and told me that I could go there anytime during the flight using the rear stairs and that I could only see the Economy section.

I have decided to wait and to visit the upper deck after the meal service. Meanwhile I looked through some options of the inflight screen

Throughout the meal service, the FA came over at least three times offering to top up drinks and offered also for Chinese tea or coffee. By the time the trays were collected, we were already over Thailand aerospace.

I decided to have a visit of the upper deck.

We waited until all the passengers upstairs disembarked, then Economy class passengers were allowed to de-plane. Some FA stood at the aircraft door to greeted passengers off the airplane. I handed my comment form to an inflight manager, and I also asked whether I could visit upper deck (once again haha), and he gladly said sure. One of the FAs volunteered to walk me to the upper deck and handed me to another FA who was in charge of First class cabin. This very nice lady was very enthusiastic about the F cabin and she walked and showed me around the cabin. She even offered to take photos of me sitting in F seat, in the lounge area, and even sitting in the (dressing area of the) F toilet!

When I returned to exit the plane, the captain was standing outside the cockpit, so I asked if I could see the flight deck, and he said sure and offered also to take a photo of me inside. However, at that time, the flight deck was quite busy with pilots still doing some work. So I waited a bit, and then the captain offered to take photo of me in the cockpit once again. I am very grateful for this. When leaving the aircraft, the FA said to me that this aircraft will now be prepared for a flight to Singapore so the crew may have rushed me a bit, but if I was a return flight to Bangkok from Singapore, then I could spend longer time touring the aircraft after the flight.

At first I thought this was a good idea. But later I didn’t think so, as after most bags were collected from the F/J belt, the first bags still hadn’t arrived on the Y belt. In fact, I wasn’t even sure as to which belt my bags would come on, being a *G member. I thought that mine would come on the Y belt as I noticed the check-in agent at HKG attached a large sticker saying C and Royal Silk to Business class passengers, whereas my bag had a *A priority tag. But I was wrong, my bag was already on the F/J belt. After taking my bag, I proceeded to exit where my father picked me up and drove me home.

This is the end of the trip report. I hope you enjoyed reading and seeing the photos. All questions/comments are very much appreciated.

Regards,

Win

Hi Win,

Nice to read the return sector so quickly, you sure could teach me a thing or two about getting these loaded promptly!

Quoting win1290 (Thread starter):
I entered the check-in zone in terminal 2, where Thai Airways check-in area locates.

- Thanks for the tip, will save me time next month, I'll know were to go!

Quoting win1290 (Thread starter):
I headed to an empty Business Class/*G counter and asked to be check-in to Bangkok. I also asked whether it was possible to get a window seat on the upper deck and after briefly looking in the system, the check-in lady consulted her supervisor. The check-in supervisor then told me that this flight was quite empty in Economy class and, for this reason, the Economy class on the upper deck will be closed. He then offered me two options: a window seat on the emergency exit row of Economy class (row 31), or non-emergency row but he will guarantee I have three seats on my own. I accepted the latter

- Nice touch, though looking at the images, it did look like a pretty empty flight.

Food looked good too.

Looking forward to my flight even more now, shame the duration is not that great.

Cheers

Mark

Another nice report Win! Shamr you couldn't get upper deck seats again. I guess the upper deck cabin will stay in pretty good shape if they don't get good loads!

I noticed the same flaw as you. If they did come out at the same time then some F/C pax will get theirs way after the first Y pax. I guess if the flight is full, you have to splait the pax into two groups. Still, it can cause confusion if you are a status pax in Y...

Thank you for your sequel. It looks like you had a good flight on Thai. I'm glad you were able to get a visit to the cockpit.
I have been on TG A350 and 777-300ER and I saw the wooden floor around the galley.

No problem, if you arrived by airport express train, exit the plane using the left door will get you to terminal 2, using the right door will take you to terminal 1.

I agree! Yes, though I arrived at the airport around 2:30 hours before the flight, which was quite early. But the load was indeed light, especially on the cabin I sat.

Yes, unfortunately at BKK, there is only one big baggage belt, I think its belt 23.

great second part of your TG A380 series! What I forgot to say in my reply to the first part: It's great that TG also offers tail camera views. So all A380 operators except for SQ offer that fantastic feature.

Two options for the meal for this flight. But for me, it was really one option as I am allergic to prawns

Interesting to see that TG has introduced an electronic menu - but I prefer classic paper cards!

Quoting win1290 (Thread starter):
Then came the drink cart, where I asked for ginger ale

Good choice. And TG still serves the real one, nice.

Impossible.

sorry to miss it the first time out. I was busy with work but comes available just now.

Another great work on your beloved airlines as usual. I'd love the light load on A380 but I'm sure TG will try best to fill up all those seats with promotions and sales.
TG is on the way back to top again with the new aircrafts joining the fleet, A380s, B77Ws, A330-300s, not to mention the refitted 747-400s and 777-200s.

Nothing to say much this time around.
I'm so sure I'll see you on up on the upper deck sleeping on the flat bed soon.
Have a great day krub.

Hi Stipica!
Haha, cheers! You could come over, there are so many things Bangkok could offer: great attractions, food ..etc.. and of course many airlines have their fifth freedom route from Bangkok to regional destinations too!

Thanks,
