Introduction:

How did this trip start? Well since I read about it a few years back i've had a long desire to visit the Faroe Islands. It wasn't until this year that I went on traveling binge did I decide to put it in motion. Originally this report was to include my trip from California to Europe and the Faroes but I figured it best to break it up. This being the first Faroes and Atlantic Airways trip I thought I would let it shine. I originally thought flights from Iceland would be best. However this was not true. I was looking purely at distance and not frequency. Once I figured a flight from Copenhagen was the best option I did so. Flight was booked though their website www.atlanticairways.fo Purchase was easy and straight forward. No problems with american Visa. So with everything set it was time to see the Faroes!

Flight path

October 4th had finally arrived. Time to make my way from downtown copenhagen to the airport. A quick hop on the metro had me there in under 15 minutes.

Walking into the airport from the metro overpass

Down the stairs to the terminals

This is happening

After getting my boarding pass and checking my bag is was through security and then airside. Not sure I like that they dump you right into a duty free shop. However it is very nice

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r508/mikeology85/IMG_0574.jpg

A look at the gates and many visitors. So many airlines I only see in trip reports and never in the states

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r508/mikeology85/IMG_0575.jpg

A quick bite to eat while I wait for the plane. Had about a hour and 30 minute wait. Smoked salmon sandwich was good

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r508/mikeology85/IMG_0577.jpg

Hey! There it is

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r508/mikeology85/IMG_0579.jpg

Still with time to spare I head to the "chill-out" area and catch up on the local news back home

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r508/mikeology85/IMG_0581.jpg

Looks to be on time and ready to go.

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r508/mikeology85/IMG_0585.jpg

And there it is. Never been so excited to fly an A319

Boarding is soon called and I make my way on to the plane. Very excited. I've been waiting a long time for this one.

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r508/mikeology85/IMG_0595.jpg

Seated and ready

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r508/mikeology85/IMG_0597.jpg

Quick fact OY-RCG is Atlantic Airways only A319. The rest of the fleet consists of some Avro's and Bell Helicopters. This plane was delivered in April of this year so only about 5 months old. And was only useable until now because the runway at FAE/Vagar airport was extended on both ends to accommodate such plane

All Y configuration on this plane. Legroom is good

So from where I come from US I may be biased but this airline is awesome. Granted it was about a $300 ticket. They are the only airline to serve the Faroes so no choice. For an hour and a half flight they provide a full meal and all the alcohol/booze you can drink. They even had jaegermeister on the cart. Bottoms up

Pasta Salad. Chicken. Bread. Mayonnaise

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r508/mikeology85/IMG_0608.jpg

Of course my flying drink of choice. Baileys

Touchdown. Let me tell you this was probably the hardest landing i've experienced. I know he doesn't have a lot of runway to work with but oh my

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r508/mikeology85/IMG_0620.jpg

No taxiways so its a drive to the end and then turn around

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r508/mikeology85/IMG_0621.jpg

When was the last time you think a 737 flew here?

So if you are familiar with the Faroes and people of the islands they eat whale. Its something i've been wanting to try and since coming here planned on doing so. Its been a long time tradition of theirs and I have no problem with it. Hopefully I didn't offend any of you by eating it.

From left to right: Whale Blubber, Whale Jerky (dried for 4 days) Dried fish, Whale meat, bread and potatoes. The blubber and meat were ok. Definitely like nothing ive ever had. The dried whale was awful. I could barely stomach it

Of course I had my bailey's. But this airline is awesome. They 2 guys next to me ordered 3 alcoholic drinks at first pass through and were gladly given them. Minutes later the FA's even gave out toys to some smaller children. Amazing

Made my way to baggage claim and collected

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r508/mikeology85/IMG_0778.jpg

Then it was back to the metro into town for my last night in Copenhagen before returning to the US

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r508/mikeology85/IMG_0780.jpg

Conclusion:

The Faroe Islands are amazing and I implore everyone to go. The food is great. The people are amazing. Although they all asked me why I came (Americans/a lot of world don't even know of their existence) Atlantic Airways was perfect. I couldn't have asked for anything more. Wish we had more airlines like this. I'll try to post my trip from SFO to Europe on Air Berlin in the coming days. Hope you enjoyed the report. Feedback is always welcome. Thanks

Thanks for an interesting trip report! Atlantic Airways looks very nice and the Faroe Islands looks like an interesting place to visit!

Just curious if it is easy to get around the Islands and the capital without a car! Is everywhere really walkable or is there a good public transportation network?

Thanks for sharing a wonderful report!

Really good report - enjoyed it. Faroe's are on my list also - now even more so !

Unusual that you boarded the plane through the right door - I never have and never seen any pictures of boarding from that side before !

Thanks again

Hi mikeology,

Really super report about a destination we rarely (if ever?) seen here on airliners. It's been a dream of mine since my teenage years to visit the Faroes one day, so I found it all very interesting. Thanks for including so many destination photos too.

The good old Norrona. I remember reading about it an a Lonely Planet guidebook. Must have been plying those waters for some time now.

Happy flying

Hey mikeology,

Allow me to say that this is one of the most interesting reports I've read in awhile. I'm surprised that we've had so few reports on the Faroes (in fact I can't recall a single one but I assume there must have been some). We have seen more trip reports for Greenland, Svalbard, and even North Korea than the Faroes. Atlantic Airways looks pretty good (I love their livery too) and Torshavn looks much more "urban" than I expected.

I would love to try some o ftheir local beer. I'm currently making a collection of international beer bottle caps so I'd love to get my hands on those Föroya Bjór multipacks you saw at the airport. Good for you for trying the local food. It sure looks interesting.

Thanks so much for sharing this lovely experience of yours with us.

The capital yes. The Islands depends. They have a bus in and around Torshavn that is free. But everything is walkable. The free bus only gets you so far outside the capital. To visit the other islands I would say rent a car. Taking the bus there is fine but with a car you can go at your own pace and stop for pics. You can even use the helicopter to get to other islands. I was told it was only about $30-$50 US for a ride

Quoting theobcman (Reply 2):

I agree. Not sure why. Maybe because it parks parelell to the airport is my best guess

Was it expensive in Faroe Islands?

Thank you. Similar to Denmark but a little cheaper. They still use Danish Krone. Beers were about $8 US and average dinner was around $25. Transportation is very cheap. For a small island nation they have a great transportation network

Thank you so much. Its been a dream of mine to for some time. Planning it wasn't easy. Glad I could offer what may be first report on it. Too bad they aren't more well known because its a fantastic destination and airline. Hope you make it out there someday

I know. I always figured i'd be flying one of the Avro's but when I booked it showed the new plane and I was thrilled. Crew on the flight were top notch

Is it one of their newer ships? I saw a different one the next day but also recall reading they added a new vessel to their fleet

Much better than the whale. I'm glad I tried the whale but I say only for adventurous eaters

Thank you so much. I hope its the first   I looked a long time for one as so I could get an idea on my time there but came up empty. Yeah i'm surprised being so close to mainland Europe it wasn't covered. And yes its very urban. Every one has cars, iPhones and normal first world stuff. Just in a smaller area.

The beer was amazing. Hopefully you can try it someday. They had a even better beer called "Trundor" which I didn't photo but it was kinda like a Belgian being around 8% alcohol content. Was great. Local food was good. Just not sure about the whale

I don't think Faroe Islands have been covered here before so thanks for posting this report.

RC looks great except the legroom looks really cramped. Very nice to get a meal especially on such a short flight.

Language seems very similar to Icelandic at least when it's written. Thanks for all the pictures from there to get an idea what it looks like.

Looking forward very much to your next report !

Excellent report! Never heard they had A319's.
I believe the plane you identified as Iceland Express is actually a CSA Holidays Plane, usually used for charter flights to holiday destinations, but also used by CSA for regular flights. Saw it this weekend in CPH also... But I might be mistaken.

Hi Mikeology,

Thank you very much for this nice and entertaining report of your visit to the Faroer Islands. Dont believe I have read a report on them before here.
The Faroer Islands are certainly on my to visit list so thanks for this insite.
Atlantic Airways looks like a great airline. Nice and good looking A319 and the service looks outstanding!

Quoting mikeology (Thread starter):
Not sure I like that they dump you right into a duty free shop

Imfortunately that the case at almost every airport here in europe

Quoting mikeology (Thread starter):
A look at the gates and many visitors. So many airlines I only see in trip reports and never in the states

That must have been a cool feeling
Quoting mikeology (Thread starter):
Even had a chance at the wee hours of 2:45 AM local to catch my San Francisco Giants start the playoffs

congrats on them getting to the next round, just watched it live on tv a couple hours ago

cheers,

Brendan

Thanks for the report.

I am surprised SAS does not fly CPH-FAE (being Faroe part of Denmark). Do they at least codeshare in this route?

Hi mikeology,

very nice report with many good pictures! Great to get an impression of RC's A319.

Quoting mikeology (Thread starter):
And there it is. Never been so excited to fly an A319

It's indeed a special one.

Quoting mikeology (Thread starter):
For an hour and a half flight they provide a full meal and all the alcohol/booze you can drink. They even had jaegermeister on the cart. Bottoms up

Pasta Salad. Chicken. Bread. Mayonnaise

That looks fine - but it's strange you got the same meal on the return flight again.

Quoting mikeology (Thread starter):
Our mighty A319 engine

Hey, it's not a GE90!

Quoting mikeology (Thread starter):

From left to right: Whale Blubber, Whale Jerky (dried for 4 days) Dried fish, Whale meat, bread and potatoes. The blubber and meat were ok. Definitely like nothing ive ever had. The dried whale was awful. I could barely stomach it

Ah, I would boycott whale products.

Quoting mikeology (Thread starter):

I wouldn't mind just flying around the islands for all the views

I'm with you here. These wingtips look really nice, btw.

Me being 6ft tall my expectations are different. So for me the leg room was fine

Yes!!!!! What a close game. We all paused here at work to watch the end. Great game. How about that Grand Slam?

Not sure if they do. Maybe a fellow A.Netter with more knowledge on SAS than me can comment. Although my boarding pass was printed with SAS markings at CPH

Thank you! I would have had no problem flying one of the Avro's but nice to be on a new plane

Agreed. Maybe next time I can catch a ride on one of their inner-island helicopters

Hello

Interesting review about the Faroe Islands, we don't get to see this to much.
Atlantic Airways looks to be a decent carrier.

Thanks for sharing some pics on the Island as well.

Greetings
Marc

Great report - thanks for posting this.

Nice to see how Atlantic are going with their new toy - looks amazing new and fresh inside.

Great pics too of the destination - a very rare one, even by European standards.

Really enjoyed your report. Cheers
