B A C K G R O U N D
I first flew on an Air China 777 in June 2001 and wrote a trip report but with no pictures. Now that I was planning to go back, it would be a great way to end the trip by flying a CA 777 again and write a much better report. Even better is that CA recently took delivery of Boeing 777-300/ERs. I also think it’s the first report on those new 77W of CA.
Booking was easy thru their website and I originally booked an earlier flight on a Boeing 777-200 but decided to change to a later flight with a 777-300/ER even though the connecting time would be a bit close. There was no problem to change it and it took less than five minutes over the phone and the agent also assigned me a seat.
T H E T R I P
Date : 18 October 2012
Route : Bejing PEK – Shanghai SHA
Distance : 668 miles
Flight : CA 1517
Flight Time : 1:34h
Dep. Time : 13:47
Aircraft : Boeing 777-39L/ER
Registration ; B-2033
Dep. Gate : C 02
Seat : 56A
207th flight on a Boeing 777; 15th on a 777-300/ER
Flown on 118 different 777 aircraft (frames)
I had arrived at the airport five hours early and did some spotting for a few hours before checking in for the flight. I went to check in about two hours before my flight. I tried a kiosk with the confirmation number but the scan of my passport didn’t work so I had to go and someone in person. It seems the kiosk only took Chinese IDs/passports. I had a 10 minute wait before an agent check me in less than a minute. I went straight to security and it was about a 10 minute wait as well.
I first went to the gate to see what the registration was and was very happy to see B-2033 there, which was about three weeks old.
I then walked around and did some more spotting before heading to the gate about an hour before departure. Boarding started only 30 minutes before departure and I was surprised to only see one gate agent there.
Boarding started a few minutes before the scheduled time and used only one of the two lanes. First and Business class passengers boarded first and the boarding continued by boarding group. I was in boarding group one so I was one of the first to board.
I was greeted by a nice flight attendant at the door and headed down the aisle to my seat. There were very few people there, which made it easier to take pictures and to explore the seat and cabin.
There was a nice big screen in front of me and the seat felt comfortable. It was also great to get a footrest and the winged headrest that makes sleeping easier on a night flight. There were no individual air vents which seem to be standard these days. Also note the no smoking sign rather than the no electronic devices sign that have started to appear on some aircraft.
The legroom was very generous, probably the best I ever had in a seat that’s not an exit or bulkhead. One reason for this was that this was the first row where the fuselage curves slightly at the back. My seat was in a slight angle to the ones in front and the helped to increase the legroom.
I was also very happy to see my previous Air China 777 parked at the gate next door, leaving for Shenzhen at the same time as my flight.
More and more people came on board and the cabin filled up. I don’t think there was an empty seat. We were ready to go at departure time but there seemed to be a delay. After a few minutes, the captain made an announcement but only on Chinese so no idea what was said. I think it was probably ATC related as I had noted while spotting that a lot of flights had to wait a long time to take off.
I started to explore the IFE system. The control and screen looked exactly the same that ET has on their 77Ls but with a much better touch screen capability. You could page thru the different options just like on an iPhone which was very nice. It was also possible to scroll thru with the IFE controller. Music and movies were very mixed with some new US movies, some very old Hollywood classics, a lot of French and Italian movies and some Chinese as well. Music was had a nice selection as well. I tried the Airshow map but the response thru out the whole flight was “feature disabled by crew”
The flight attendants came around with pillows and blankets but I didn’t need those for this short flight.
The Shenzhen flight pushed about five minutes before us and we finally left the gate about 17 minutes late. I was worried that we had to wait for take off for a long time but we were very close to the threshold of the runway and didn’t wait for more than five minutes. We even took off before the Shenzhen flight.
Take off was quick and powerful on this short flight. Once we were up at a safe altitude, the flight attendants started the service.
Each section of the aircraft had a flight attendant in each aisle to expedite the process and it worked well and did not feel rushed. Lunch came with some mystery vegetables, bread, yoghurt (!) and cantaloupe for dessert. There was also a tea/coffee cup but neither tea nor coffee was offered. I had beef with rice and a glass of coke.
The trash was collected fairly quickly and I listened to music for the rest of the flight. We had a smooth landing and a quick taxi to the gate where we arrived only five minutes late despite the late departure.
All in all, a great flight on Air China and a big improvement since my last flight with them 11 years ago. The crew was a bit reserved like a lot of Asian flight attendants are but not unfriendly. I would have no problem to fly with them on a long haul flight.
Thanks for reading and looking forward to any comments

Nice report Lars. I couldn't see from the photos, what configuration did they go for? I quite liked the old 2x5x2, but it looks like 3x4x3 to me on the new one.

Hi Lars
Interesting report, thanks for sharing.
CA's 77W does look pretty comfortable, plenty of legroom indeed.
Glad to see CA is going with the traditional 3-3-3 as well iso 3-4-3.

Hi Lars,
good to see this 77W. I think that our fellow reporter 'CrimsonNL' was after the CA 77W but got on an A330 instead on this route. Legroom seems generous indeed. It this 34" like on MH in YCL? The meal and offerings of pillow and blankets is an Asian thing, but, very generous and really stands out. It seems you got a very nice service, definitely a big plus for CA here.
So, any new airlines coming up in the near future for you?
Regards
Eric

Hi Lars,
Nice short report. Good thing you changed your flights to the mightiest of the T7 family (at least imo). The one letdown thing seems to be the meal: it looks rather bland, but perhaps the taste was allright?

Always a nice treat to fly on a new plane!

And the latter sign makes much more sense nowadays but with the Chinese smoking culture, you never know...

But still I spot a rather large IFE box.

More like 35 or 36' I think. Legroom was enormous!
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 5): The meal and offerings of pillow and blankets is an Asian thing, but, very generous and really stands out.
Yes, still very nice on a short domestic flight of about 90 mins.
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 5): So, any new airlines coming up in the near future for you?
Well I hope to fly Turkmenistan's 77L when they get them but not sure exactly when that might be. New airlines probably will in February when I go to CUZ but via PTY, CTG, BOG and LIM. Hope to add about five new airlines on that trip and three new countries. But don't expect a trip report from that trip.
Quoting sultanils (Reply 6): it looks rather bland, but perhaps the taste was allright?
It was pretty good. Nice to get a meal on such a short flight. I only got a sandwich and a breakfast on NH LAX-HND a few years ago and that's a 12h flight.....(although at night)
Quoting sultanils (Reply 6): And the latter sign makes much more sense nowadays but with the Chinese smoking culture, you never know...
Yes, I'm sure that's the reason. People did seem to smoke less there now than before. ( I was in CAN in 1998)
Quoting sultanils (Reply 6): But still I spot a rather large IFE box.
Not too bad; about a quarter of the size of the IFE box on AZ.
Thanks again for the comments !

Hi Lars,
great to see the report about your latest 777 mission online! Cool stuff! CA's 77W looks nice, a huge improvement over the 744 which used to operate routes such as PEK-FRA.

Not bad, but not overwhelming either.
Quoting The777Man (Reply 3): 3-3-3 configuration which is the best one in my opinion.
I prefer 2-5-2, but that will disappear sooner or later.
I was surprised by this and was hoping it would come on later after push back, while we where in the air etc but it remained off the whole flight. Very disappointing.

Hi Lars,
Love the legroom, and the seat looks comfortable, not like those ultra-thin (and hard) ones. Amazing they can put out a meal service on a full 77W flight of an hour and a half.
I also prefer the 2-5-2, but 3-3-3 is not a deal-breaker. As if I had a choice anyway...
Don't forget, not only T5 and GA, but C2! That is, IF it ever becomes available.
- Flew this route vv back in Feb, still need to get the TR's up, CZ A380 & HU A346.

Yes, stil hope to do both GA and T5 next year. C2 is still second-hand since technically it's operated by White. Would love to try that one though....
Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 14): Good to see you are still notching up these 777 flights! - got AA's new 77W on the radar?
I have flown AA before but still missing a trip report from it...So yes, hope to try their new 77W sometime next year with a trip report to follow. We'll see.

Hi Hannah!
Quoting infodesk (Reply 16): Congrats on logging such a brand new 777! It looks a lot nicer than the Air China bird PH ended up on recently.
Thanks ! Yes I was lucky to be on the newest one. I think PH's 332 was older and it did look a bit worn.
Quoting infodesk (Reply 16): I don't like mystery anything when it comes to food, but at least it wasn't mystery meat, you never know in China....
Yes, I like to know what I'm eating as well. You are right that they eat a lot of strange stuff there. Good to be extra careful in countries like that.

Hi Lars,
Great TR! Thanks for sharing. Ever since I saw a pretty new CA 77W at FRA in Jan, I was wondering what it'd be like to fly inside. And it doesn't look too bad at all! But to fly it, I'd have to make a fair diversion to do so.. The legroom is impressive but you'd expect them to try and win over the taller population or they may not see their business in the future.

Another great 777 report! Really enjoyed it, thanks for sharing.
Nothing beats flying a 3 week old widebody
Looks like you had an enjoyable flight. Great legroom and the food doesn't look too bad either. The IFE system sounds interesting with a lot of variety, well done Air China. Too bad the map didn't work though..
Great last picture too

Hi Nicholas !

Thanks for the info ! I get alarmed about most things I don't recognize in food......
Yes, I was very lucky. But I did fly on QR's first ever Boeing flight; their inaugural flight of their first 777-300/ER which was even newer. Every time I happen to go on one that's very new, it's really special.
I'm very much looking forward to that! I see people here a few times a year so it's great to see someone from Airliners.net here, especially a fellow trip reporter and spotter.
Hi Suryo!
Quoting akhmad (Reply 21): What a nice idea of yours! This is what I call a great ‘remake’ of Air China.
Yes, Air China and China has changed a lot in 11 years!
Quoting akhmad (Reply 21): Specially assigned for The777Man!
Perhaps; I wish I could get that lucky every time I fly. I should put in a special request next time I make a booking or a listing.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 21): Do they have Dance music as well from artists like Shakira or Pittbul?
I think so but not sure. They did have Whitney Houston's new album which was pretty good.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 21): Hmm, did you really have to slurp the yoghurt out with a straw? The meal looked delicious, by the way.
Well, I thought it was juice of some kind so I tried it and it tasted really weird and then I read the container and found out if was yoghurt.....Not a yoghurt fan so I stopped drinking....
Quoting akhmad (Reply 21): Thank you for sharing, especially your picture on The Great Wall. Magnificent!
Thanks ! Most of the part in the picture is what I just walked down on. I walked downhill mostly but it was pretty steep so even that was a bit challenging sometimes.
Thanks again for your comments!

It was much steeper than I thought it would be. I would NOT want to be there when it's raining; it would be incredibly slippery.
