Hi Everyone, This is not my trip report. This is a friend's trip report.

I wake up bright and early on May 30, 2002. After eating some AirTran pretzels, LOL, my mom flew in the night before from BOS where I saw the plane I would take to MEM which was terminated overnight, we headed for GPT once again.

At GPT, I was already checked in using NWA.com Check-In. All I had to check was my suitcase. I went up to screening, already excited about going on more DC-9's, said bye to my mom, and proceeded through to await boarding at Gate 1A. This is whats so exciting about flying on Airlines. Boarding commenced shortly, and I walked the jetway once again.

Northwest Airlines Flight 472
Service to Memphis, TN (MEM)

I boarded the DC-9 and took Seat 5A, bulkhead row. I was tired and excited. Today I would see the Northwest World Gateway. The jetway was disconnected and we were pushing back. We taxied to runway 14 (14/32) and were airborne south over the beaches. We make a quick turn back towards Gulfport and headed north to Memphis. I had a cup of Apple Juice and a double pack of Biscoff Cookies. The flight route took us over Hattiesburg, Jackson, then over to Tunica, and into Memphis. We arrived at Gate B23 ontime. In MEM, I ran over to the "A" concourse and got a cinnabon. I then ran to B40 for boarding to DTW. This was exciting.

Northwest Airlines Flight 286
Service to Detroit, MI (DTW)

The same flight crew from GPT were also joining me on this flight! So the F/A said "Welcome Back" as I trampled into the plane. I took my seat, 9F. I consumed my Cinnabon and we taxied away for DTW. Once aloft, I got a can of Pepsi and Biscoff cookies. Our route took us over Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, and into Michigan. There is no difference in the DC-9-50's interior.
We taxied for eternity, and finally reached the glorious new World Gateway. It was beautiful! The cool terminal air blew into the jetway as I deplaned. I emerged into what is the most beautiful terminal structure I have ever seen. The clocks stood on their own magnificent poles, and the tram rode quietly overhead. The hushed atmosphere was relaxing. Oh, what a relief from Davey!!!!!!! I was finally here, the NW hub! I dreamed of this place. I connected via the train to A64. I was the last to board, so I got searched.

Northwest Airlines Flight 1577
Service to Green Bay, WI (GRB)

Well this was it! Last flight of my traveling day. I boarded and took my seat in the very back, a pleasant engine seat on the F row (window). We taxied away past the old Davey Terminal where I laughed and laughed. We took off and headed over Lansing, Ludington, Lake Michigan, and into Green Bay. I got a can of Pepsi on this flight, with Spinzels (Little bradied pretzel sticks). We landed and had to wait, because the runway was being worked on. We soon taxied to B7. I took some interior pictures of the plane, including the Cabin, and Crew, and then deplaned.

I wake up early again on June 6, 2002. I am truly excited about today, which would include a SAAB-340 (First time on one!) and a DC-10 (Last time I flew on one, it was with horrible AA in 88), then of course, the DC-9 to GPT, which turned out to be more than a typical departure. I got to GRB, checked my bag (I used NWA.com checkin again) and said bye to my sister and kids. Before heading to Security, I took my sisters kids to a downstairs 1950's era Gate. They could see a DC-9 at B5. I went through security, and awaited boarding at B8. Our SAAB was not here yet. I chatted it up with a "Ramp Rat" or Ramp Agent about 727's and 747's. The SAAB arrived from MSP, everyone deplaned, we boarded, and in tradition of flying on planes without jetways, I waved from the top of the stairs, getting a photo taken by the same ramp agent, he handed me the camera and said "Good Luck, and have a safe trip home".

Mesaba Airlines Flight 3094
Service to Twin Cities, (MSP)

I stepped into the Cabin and took Seat 2D. What? No window at all!  Sad I moved to 8A an exit seat. Much better. We quickly departed and took off. The SAAB rocks. It has an awesome takeoff, with the engines roaring like h***. The plane vibrates like a tin can, and then we shoot forward and into the air. I love it! The flight is quiet, and smooth. Cassey, our sweet F/A passed out Spinzels (2 packs) and I got a 7Up. The flight was enjoyable, and really cool when we descended. Flying into MSP, we dropped like rocks over the city itself. We made quick turns this way and that. I was having the time of my life. We landed in MSP ontime, and taxied to a new gate with jetways! The F/A didn't know whether we would use the Farm or a Jetway, but it was a jetway on B Concourse. I took a crew pic, and got off. The new MSP commuter terminal is nice, a heck of alot better than ASA in ATL, or Comair in CVG. I went to a cool tunnel with light displays, and got to another new commuter concourse, A. We had to take a bus to C Concourse, because the tram was not completed. In C, I went to F10 for boarding to MEM, which was the DC-10.

Northwest Airlines Flight 454
Service to Memphis, TN (MEM)

I boarded this beast and it was cool! The cabin was spacious. I took seat 34-E. We had more than 5 F/A's. We sat at the Gate forever, and finally departed. It takes forever to load a DC-10. Our beast of a plane quirked and groaned as we taxied. We took off, using almost every inch of the runway. Inflight, our F/A's worked like crazy to serve us! Unlike Delta with Fastbreak, we got a full beverage service which is standard on NW. I had a can of Apple Juice and Spinzels. I walked around our plane, taking photos and complimenting our hard working crew, and complimenting the plane. It was like an old reunion. Before long, we descended into Memphis, landing ontime, using almost 75% of the runway. We arrived at Gate B38 next to a KLM MD-11. Memphis was fun, I took photos of the Airlink Gates and NW Gates, and headed to B14 for a departure to GPT.

Northwest Airlines Flight 1853
Service to Gulfport, MS (GPT)

I was not ready to come home, I HATE Mississippi. But I got my wish! Onboard, they told us we were delayed because of a wheel problem, (Aw Shucks) and made us taxi back to B14. Whooopie! I wished for a night in Elvis Land. I walked around MEM some more, and Ken, the guy I met working B3, said "Colin, did you miss your flight?". I said no, but it was delayed. I went over to C Concourse to chat with Mesaba employees. The agent told me it would be best to remain around B14. I started back, and on the moving walkways, and then the agent comes screaming "DROP EVERYTHING, AND RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN, I'LL GET YOUR BAGS". I sprinted across the empty NW hub and almost ran over the agent at B14. I got my bags from the nice Airlink agent, and boarded. Talk about nice service with Northwest! We taxied out, and took off for GPT  Sad Inflight, I had a Ginger Ale and Spinzels. We arrived in GPT on runway 14 (14/32) and taxied into 1A. I walked off the plane and looked at it one last time, the end of a great trip.

Northwest was great, I will continue flying them.

Looks like your friend had a good trip. I do miss those days when one could take a widebody domestic flight (on non hub-hub routes that is). But the monotony of pretzels would have made me sick........

I guess your friend learned his lesson with straying from the gate in a delay... one should never go far, much less to a concourse on the other side of the airport.

w00t! Sounded fun, I would have taken NWA to GRB for the AirVenture 2002 but instead got a free trip on a Citation II from some of my flight sim buddies who know someone that owns a Citation II and is going to Oshkosh, anyone want pics of the Citation II?
