In September when UA announced their initial 787 routes me and two friends of mine from college decided that we would go on their once only scheduled route from CLE-IAH so we booked it. Two weeks ago as we went to check our itinerary we noticed that they had changed our plane from a 787 to a 767-200. This was at around 9 o'clock at night. Quickly me and one of my friends went and checked out what other routes the 787 were flying the same day and the only one we would be able to do would have been the 787 from IAH-EWR-IAH so we called UA and checked to see if they could book us for it. The phone call by the time we got connected began at 11:00 at night and ended at 1:00am the next day, needless to say we got on to the flight after much fighting. They wanted to put us on another flight that would still get to Houston but on a different aircraft saying, "Oh its just an aircraft change, you will still get there." And we responded with a, "BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT."  Anyway when all said and done we got our flights and were happy, especially since all four legs for me were only $258 when they were on the website for $2700.

Leg One:

Flight: 1737 CLE-IAH
Day: Friday, November 9th
Time of departure: 2:28p
Aircraft type: 737-800 (With Sky Interior)
Tail Reg: N76528
Seat 8A

That morning I still had classes at my college but was able to get out of most of them, when we got to the airport it was about 11:30a. We went through security without issue and had enough time to grab a quick lunch. We explored a bit and then got to our gate where boarding started at around 1:40ish.

Here we were on the plane still at the gate:

I got bored mid flight so I decided to do a little self shooting:

The landing was to be honest bloody awful... He touched down very soft initially but bounced and then slammed it into the ground:

Overnight:
My friends went out that night with one of their friends that lived in Houston but I decided to stay back at the hotel because I was exhausted. Doesn't mean I didn't stay up and get a few pictures of our view of the airport though  http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8337/8179148135_65124a5f5e_b.jpg

Leg two:
Flight: 1146 IAH-EWR
Day: Saturday, November 10th
Time of departure: 7:30a
Aircraft type: 787-8
Tail Reg: N26906
Seat 29L (scheduled for 27L but it had no window)

We got to the airport the next day at around 5am for our flight scheduled at 7:30a. Now between this time I was so busy being concerned with going on the 787 that I misplaced my iPhone...   As it turns out that some employee had actually found it and taken it home with her. I'm not implying that she was stealing it but they could have just as easily put it in lost and found as they knew I was coming back. It should be coming back to me tonight.

Our plane at gate C14

Right before boarding started the crew showed up and saw me and my friends in our matching 787 shirts we bought specifically for the flight:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8201/8176951995_3d8fc04b47_b.jpg
People all morning were taking pictures of us, maybe 20 or so people eventually snapped us that we didn't know.

Finally on board it was time for departure... or so we thought. Right after push back the head FA came on the speaker saying that we would be returning to the gate because they were having an issue with the cockpit door not securing so we waited at the gate for about an hour before we decided to deplane. In that time we were allowed to walk around and explore the aircraft. I was able to see the bathrooms, galleys, crew rests, first class, and everything else.

During our wait:

After deplaning a lot of passengers decided to take different flights so the flight that was full ended up having 62 less people. At the gate they had snacks and drinks for us and we had a fun time socializing with others, we got a few numbers and facebooks of other aviation enthusiast on the flight, turns out we were not the only ones going there and back. :P

The only picture I got during our break was this of the engine:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8061/8179179852_ee0d8ba24f_b.jpg

Two hours after deplaning the part was flown in and fixed so we finally re-boarded and were set for takeoff.

Before pushback next to N78004:

Landing:

Once we landed and pulled up to the gate you could just see how many people there were there. 50 or so were just on the ramp watching us pull in.

Since we were three hours late we only had 10 minutes in EWR enough time to get McDonalds and go.

Leg Three:
Flight: 1261 EWR-IAH
Day: Saturday, November 10th
Time of departure: 4:08p
Aircraft type: 787-8
Tail Reg: N26906
Seat 24A (scheduled for 27L but it had no window)

The last flight I wanted to enjoy the plane more than document it but I did get some pictures inflight:

Leg four:
Flight: 1608 IAH-CLE
Day: Saturday, November 10th
Time of departure: 7:20p
Aircraft type: 737-900
Tail Reg: N53442???
Seat 34A

I didn't get any media on this flight because my battery died. All I need to say though is that the plane was loud and poorly maintained. The seats had no padding, the windows squeaked, and our flight attendant looked a lot like Ke$ha, not that that was bad I just found it amusing. We landed just after 11p and since our first flight was delayed we were entitled to meal vouchers but nothing was open except Dnkin Donuts so we ended up buying $60 in donuts...   And that is how we ended up finishing our trip.

Can't wait to fly on the 787, thanks for the photos and video. Question, how is the noise level on the 787 compared to other aircraft you have flown.

It is extremely quiet as compared to the 737. The only time it really gets loud is on takeoff and landing when the, what I was told was the hydraulic boost pumps, turned on. You can hear it turn off in the landing video at around 7:10 in the landing video. I was amazed at how quiet it actually was.

That's what flightaware said too, but it couldn't have been as it was a standard -900 not a -900/ER

Fantastic.

I understand that the 787 is a lot less noisy than the 777 which I really find noisy. Also the B737 is noisy.

I am surprised by the generous legroom. I wonder how long that will last as UA legroom in Y is a tight 31". Nice to see that there is no entertainment box under the seat in front which takes up a lot of room.

I don't think that UA will be using this aircraft to Europe, at least not in the beginning.

Thanks for the TR.

FYI: BA flies from IAH to LHR, not LGW.

Interesting that in the galley, CONTINENTAL was clearly engraved on some of those bins.

Actually, the first international route to be launched by UA On the 787 will be IAH-AMS.

We actually brought that up to the crew. It was a CO plane, with CO crew, in CO configuration so I guess they just decided to use CO equipment as well. I just wish they had cleaned and polished them first, they were all tarnished looking for being on a two day old plane...

Thanks, I used a Canon EOS 550D (Rebel T2i) along with the stock 18-55mm lens. Its all you really need for the 787. I would suggest going smaller for the 737 though.

Hey great TR there! It was not very long, but summed it all up pretty good. Your photos are of amazing quality, your videos are excellent. I think I looked 6 times at the moment of touchdown, with the wing loosing all its lift after the spoilers deployed.

Keep going and buy a spare battery! ^^

There is no first class on UA's 787, it is businessfirst, essentially business class. It sold as first class because this is a 2 cabin aircraft flying domestic.
