Someone fly for VIP?. At least AeroVip ex VRL!
Bom dia, dear readers,
I was on the road during the last weeks,
or rather, I was once on the road and failed with a second trip, but that´s another story!.
It´s finally time now to tell you something new.
Summer vacation is an interesting travel time,
but it´s easy to find a solution for all the claims of the parties?.
No, it isn´t, definitely not!.
But finally, after long negotiations, we decided for a trip to Portugal.
And so it is not much more than a week after
and I´am on travel again.
Portugal, where I´ve been several times before.
Not that easy and much more time consuming than ever expected, to fit in a new departure airport around this trip.
But well, that´s the final route map:
It´s FRA this time and that means Tourcare in Neu-Isenburg, where the car should spend some lazy days now!.

Service TP 573 operated by TAP Transportes Aéreos Portugueses
Scheduled: 13.30 // 15.30
On the road again, Thursday morning 8.30 am.
With, as usual during summer vacation time, most of the European population on the german motorways.
But thankfully in the other direction today!.
11.00 am at the parking spot, early enough to shuttle for the airport and some lounging.
Well, the reservation is done via Lastminute.de,
together with the return leg and that means a fare per pax and leg with 75.00 Euro´s, sure ok during this part of the year.
Seats are selected online in advance and the real nice female agent at the Senator Gold counter printed the papers for us. 5 D/E/F is the second row after biz and that means some more legroom this way.
But be sure, the last row rule is only interrupted with these specific requirements!.
There is a special entrance to security available directly from the Senator desks, not a minute to wait there.
Ready for the Lounge, where the also nice guy at the entrance decided to welcome the whole group today without any question about the number of guests!.
What´s on offer?
Fresh fruits here
Well, it´s a nice place to spend some time at the window.
At least when there are not that many pax here, what is lucky us, the case this time
Uzbekistan anyone?
Oh, TAP is doing, what they are doing best!. This is the inbound ex LIS close to two hours late.
Thankfully no connection today
And by far not a real surprise that the outbound is also running late
Heading for the gate A16 when the screen showed the plane as arrived. Apron boarding, sure ok with this nice weather conditions. Good for some pictures
Show me your registration, please
JAT also on the way
Portugal we come, sooner or later
Engine view
Show me not only you´re registration!.
This is CS-TTL, "Almeida Garrett", the A319 like on schedule.
New to the log and leg. no 85 on type.
24 sunny degrees here
Boarding now
TAP operates this plane since 20.10.1999.
19 A319´s are in the fleet, how appropriate!
"Air Portugal" is finally leaving FRA at 3.15 pm, 1 hour, 45 minutes late.
2 hours, 55 minutes to go for LIS from the 4000 meters runway "One-Eight".
Forward cabin view with the bright blue-grey leather seats. Well used, but clean so far
Cabin crew is one young, nice male FA and three woman, two from the nice party, one elder, one young and also one ok style middle aged FA.
Instrucoes de Seguranca
Aveiro, sounds interesting
The captain is on the mike inflight with an delay apologize.
There are some scheduling problems in Lisboa earlier in the morning and the plane is running late also inbound to LIS from the previous leg.
Flightlevel maximum is 39000 feet with some shakers expected due to a heavy jetstream above the Bay of Biscay. So it was in the end, but nothing really serious.
Legroom is really good here
The cabin´s panel
Well, nice weather to fly around, isn´t it?
Engine view
Service, sure ok this way, a bread roll and fresh fruits, "Yes", together with some meat, "No", but mashed potatoes, "Yes"!
Send the clouds for somewhere else
Full cabin view, the load is 80%, mostly portuguese travellers. Also a good number of pax on connecting flights and a very few number of german vacationeers,
like us today
Approaching LIS
Out to the sea
Turning for finals
The coastline again
Looks like Almada
The Ponte 25 de Abril
Traffic down there
Above the city
Touchdown at the 3805 meters "Zero-Three", 6.15 pm in Germany, 5.15 pm in Portugal and that means 1 hour, 45 minutes late.
With a first view to Euroatlantic
SATA parked beside
Later than expected, but nevertheless a sunny welcome to Portugal
26 degrees with some clouds only here and there, perfect
The priority bag tag works as it should do here, time now to catch the rental car and further for our accomodation.
Reservation is done via consolidator argusmietwagen.de, part of cartrawler.
The car itself was from Multiauto/International car,
the fare in comparison to the other offers real good, 6 days all in, 135.00 Euro´s. Ok, count the stupid pick up full, return empty rule, with the need to pay the first gas tank, but also this way it was much cheaper than anything else.
Walking to the rental car center?. No way here, a guy with a Multiauto sticker runs around, sign the contract in the arrivals hall and another guy delivered the car directly for the terminal entrance. That´s the way to do it in Portugal!.
It´s a Renault Clio with scratches and dents all around,
one more doesn´t matter!.
On the South American roads soon thereafter, everything well signed and in a orderly manner?. You know, I´am still searching for these irony out button!. But wait, this is truly the European Union and not South America.
Some 45 minutes, ok, when you catch the right exit from the airport roundabout and good to follow the sun which show´s me the direction, but yes, we found the hotel.
Such a surprise that I need less than half the time when I´am familiar with the portuguese driving style during the next days!.
Much more important to scale back for german style driving when I will be in Germany again!.
This is the Campo Real resort and Spa Turcifal
In the afternoon
Poolside
The lobby
Indoor
On the way for the room
Room first view
From the bathroom
And the bathroom
Breakfast the next morning
There is an outdoor pool and also an indoor place available.
Imagine who´s the one under the fountain?
Nice flowers around
And if you are in dire need for some church counsel, here it is
What to do some 30 minutes out of Lisbon?.
Well, enjoy the city!.
The daily public transport ticket is 5.50 Euro´s, sure worth it.
The main shopping area Baixa/Chiado
MUDE/Museo do Design e da Moda
Praca do Comercio
Elevador the Santa Justa
Sure, we need to go this way
Close up
Looks like antique
Also this way
Hold you´re wallet and take the 28
Public transport Lisbon style
The Ascensor da Bica
No way to miss this one
Caution, we´re on the way
Traffic
One more ride, sure
Sure worth to use the car sandwich style
We are persecuted
That´s the way to go
The place to rest
With a cruiser down the harbour
Driver take care
Bye now for the 12
There are also some 20 minutes only to drive for the beaches near Ericeira
This way
And between the hotel and Ericeira is this superstrange place called Mafra, where one of the former kings decide to spend some tax money and built a summer house
Looks like nice, isn´t it?
Indoor
This is truly a massive building
Also this way
I´am in immediate need for some more flying around now and also to catch these difficult new departure airport, a new airline and a rare plane type, oh yes!.
Service TP 1950 operated by TAP Transportes Aéreos Portugueses
Scheduled: 07.20 // 08.15
Also on vacation, sure, that´s me, definitely,
make the most of the day, isn´t it?.
And imagine the night porter´s astonished face when I´am walking by happy, "Bom dia", for a day of travel 5.30 am in the morning!.
Definitely not the standard vacationeers time here.
But well, Tripreporter´s duties, you know!.
OLCI is done quickly from the mobile and the boarding paper picked up at the kiosks, LIS airport.
Hmmh, TP is playing the delay game again.
It´s not that much, but when you know that I´am holding a fixed fare ticket for the bus to my new departure place with a somewhat shorty connection in Porto, that sounds not that really relaxed to me
And yes, the relaxed mood is leaving quickly, when we know that there are not 5, 4, 3, 2 or rather only one other option beside exactly this prebooked bus service and no, I don´t want to rent another rental car, definitely.
This leg is booked by Opodo as a return next month and shame that I´ve missed this return leg!. The fare real good this way, 85.00 Euro´s.
Ok, check the lounge now
The spaceship´s command center
The offers this early morning for all the hungry intergalactical travellers
Or better this way
Early morning view LIS style
Sure, I want to go now on TAP as soon as possible
Give me a Fokker anyday
Boarding now from gate 20.
Take some good amounts of cash and visit Angola
Ok, this is CS-TNR "Luis de Freitas Branco", the scheduled A320.
Leg no. 89 on type and new to the log
Under the wing, you know!
Or maybe better this way
A somewhat new bird, in service since 29.05.2009 with TP only. 17 examples are in the actual fleet
Logo view
8.10 am, 50 minutes late and 30 minutes only for "Air Portugal", heading in northern direction. Departure from "Zero-Three" like Thursday´s arrival.
18 degrees and partly cloudy weather conditions.
Closely followed by this F100
Cabin crew is one male, three female FA´s, all together middle aged and nothing special.
The bridge to nowhere portuguese style
Cabin view with a close to 100% load,
biz and leisure well mixed.
And, so it seems, a lot of connecting pax from overnight flights on the plane.
That doesn´t really fit, oldfashioned blue leather seats and a modern style cabin
The captain is on the mike inflight with the usual, so it seems, delay apologize.
The reason?. The plane was ok, but not the crew, due to minimum crew rest time from the also late inbound flight last night.
No route, nor flightlevel info.
Instrucoes de Seguranca, take two
Legroom, where is the legroom?. Definitely not here.
This is the last row window, 28F and at least the middle seat remains open while the aisle is taken by a young biz style traveller
No service at all on this leg.
Approaching OPO
Some clouds down there
But anyway nice views to the Douro bridges
Touchdown at the 3480 meters runway "Three-Five". 08.50 am, 35 minutes late, 15 degrees, partly cloudy here.
And now?.
Rede Expressos should leave Porto at 10.00 am from a somewhat anonymous place.
Sure?.
Sure!.
The company operates a basic website with the possibility to buy discounted tickets online for fixed services.
Sure the way for the southern german traveller to catch a bus ticket.
But not that much more informations beside that.
And when I´ve searched the web for the location of the bus station, there are several different informations.
Mainly with the point that the independent bus companies operating separate stations all around the city and also a merger between two companies not that long ago.
I´ve located with the sales point of the ticket a place downtown what looks like the station.
The suburban train runs every 30 minutes from the airport, travel time more than 30 minutes, to late for me now.
Well, negotiations with a nice in the end oldfashioned senior taxista. He want´s to sell me the ride for my new departure airport itself, but no, Porto only for me!.
We fixed a fare in the end, he´s running on the quick track and finally we reached the place where I want to go. Good in the end, I´am not sure to locate this place with limited time by walking myself.
Isn´t it really South America?.
I´am sure, when I see the other people waiting here, this is South America with me as the only stranger around.
Now it´s clear why there is no need to show an address. These people here know where to go and foreigners?. No way!
Anyway, it works and Rede Expressos should shuttle me for Vila Real right now.
The fare not bad, 8.60 Euro´s
Ah, tramway´s also here in Porto
Above the Douro valley
Vineyards all around. It feels not that long ago since I saw some vineyards a la francaise!
Welcome to Vila Real now.
This is a small city in Northern Portugal, travel time 1 hour, 30 minutes and this one run´s ontime!.
The church
En detail
Azulejos, really nice
The town hall
In the old, new or who know´s, town
And believe it or not, there is an airport with scheduled services here!.

Service RVP 853 operated by Aero VIP
Scheduled: 15.10 // 16.10
Am I right here?.
There is an oldfashioned taxista with an also oldfashioned white Mercedes on duty at the, ahem, main place.
Sorry, no picture.
No english at all.
But my perfect portuguese knowledge, at least in terms of heading for the airport, shows him the way for the aeroporto.
He´s acting like I´am on a good joke, but no, this is serious, what he finally understand.
Well, scheduled services here, oh yes!.
Follow me on the time machine, at least when you decide to book a ticket for Aero VIP.
No online booking engine on the homepage.
No flights listed by the major online ticket dealers.
Simply buy you´re ticket at the airport counter.
Sounds simple, but that´s not my style to go and hold no ticket.
Oh, yes, what about by Mail?.
Send a couple of them in and out clearly stated which flight you want to take and see the confirmation with another one!.
Oh dear, that´s the way to do business here.
Anyway, it seems in the end, I´am ok confirmed and should catch and pay the ticket at the airport counter.
At the airport counter?.
Trust me, when I see a couple of military style guys roasting something in the early afternoon on the gas cooker. Directly in front of the so called terminal and the dog sleeps in his kennel beside the rear entrance, this feels as unsubstantial as never before. I´am sure I´am with a couple of french military guy´s in the Algerian desert.
No question that there is a Dassault Mirage on finals after another difficult mission
The entrance with the faster transport option
Where, lucky me, during my preparations in Vila Real I decide to take advantage of the automatic cash teller machine and sure, there are no credit cards accepted here.
50.00 Euro´s, good ol´cash only!.
Parking is generously free directly in front of the terminal building
This is the scheduled biz here
With an heli parked on the apron
Not in use today, so it seems
A couple of the guy´s are mechanics, working unenthusiastic around another heli
and the others are maybe from the fire brigade waiting
for the hopefully not arriving call.
But this is the VIP place, at least Aero VIP
My boarding pass in style
A van with the airport firefighter guy´s arrived and some minutes thereafter the police, also responsible for the security job here.
Let me say, no time to wait and the guy´s are relaxed.
In the small waiting room where I don´t remember the gate number, but it seems there is not a real chance to do the wrong one!
Ah, this is it, the scheduled Dornier 228
The scheduled Dornier 228?.
Well, I was in contact with the company about the Shorts 360 also used on this route but they told me, that the plane is in heavy maintenance and it´s not sure what they do with it.
The only other equipment is the Dornier 228, that fit´s
CS-TGG it is. Pretty easy to notice with one flight only in the log till now, that this is a new entry
Built in 1988 and formerly also on the german register.
Two examples are in the fleet actually.
Now that´s what I call a turnaround.
The plane stopped, engines shut down, doors opened,
no one disembarked. The leg from Braganca to Vila Real is also bookable, the door to the waiting room opened and boarding
Under the wing, sure, if ever possible
3.15 pm, close to ontime. No flight duration info or at least not closely followed. 22 partly cloudy degrees, "Aerovip" on the go.
Take you´re seat and for the runway again
Turning at the runway end, "Two-Zero", now that´s massive, full 946 meters!
Is this enough for the Dornier?
It is!
Vineyards anyone?
Strange to find a place suitable for a runway here
Vineyards beside more vineyards
Till the Douro valley
This is it
No FA, but yes, a safety card
And there is an nasty smell like toilet around despite there is no restroom on the plane.
Legroom is ok here
Cockpit crew is from Portugal, the senior captain and the young FO. The captain with a short info in portuguese during approach only.
Well, it seems there are no foreigners expected here.
No service nor route or flightlevel info.
Cabin view, how I like it this way
Well used to say the least today. A 100% load, tough work for the small Dornier.
Biz and leisure well mixed
And also the seats, blue really worn out leather examples
Now that´s a tiny engine
Under the wing, Dornier style
The cabin panel
The coastline in the distance
Not that far from Lisbon
Ah, the bridge the other way this time
Short on finals
Touchdown at the 3805 meters runway "Two-One". 4.15 pm, close to ontime, sunny and 28 degrees.
Sure, under the wing again
Functional to say the least
The way to go for the captain
And the pax this way, please
This engine looks like really tiny
But anyway, CS-TGG nice to meet you
Bye now
Back at the hotel in the late afternoon, sure a special experience.
Some more time the next day to explore the city of Sintra
With another place of the "Oh so poor portuguese kings".
These tops remark the cooker
That´s the way I like the weather in Portugal
In the old town
Nice flowers around
How to live here
Ok, enough Portugal for now.
Returned the car without problems.
As announced, there was someone at the terminal entrance to pick it up, no problems.
And ready for the hopefully, not delayed flight back to
Germany right now!.
Service TP 572 operated by TAP Transportes Aéreos Portugueses
Scheduled: 18.25 // 22.30
Seats are selected via mobile, a really nice female agent printed the papers and send our bags for FRA, hopefully.
She even speaks german, super service here.
Oh, AeroVip cancelled, lucky not me today
Some more lounging now. This is the TP Star Gold place again
Muffins, sure
Or sandwiches
And this is the Portway lounge
With not that much other customers beside this young guy heading for who knows around
The offers
Well, no info for FRA from gate 09.
Better no delay this time with FRA´s strict night curfew and this flight is scheduled to arrive 30 minutes prior only
Some sunny TAP planes side by side
Euroatlantic cargo or pax today?
Finals on the close by runway
Boarding now for CS-TTK "Miguel Torga", the scheduled A319
Leg no. 86 on type, new to the log.
With TAP since 22.06.1999.
6.25 pm, perfectly ontime, 2 hours, 30 minutes till FRA.
Leaving 28 sunny degrees in Portugal.
Cabin view, the load today is again very close to 100%. Vacationeers and VFR traffic on the way
Cabin crew is four female FA´s, two elder, two middle aged, all together nice.
Just departed from "Zero-Three"
Nice weather again here
Cockpit crew is from Portugal, the captain with nice and detailed infos after reaching our cruise level of 38000 feet.
Routing is BIO-Tours-Paris and Luxemburg.
Fully engine view
Leaving Portugal now
Legroom with the bright blue, well used leather seats is good, 05 D/E/F for us
Instrucoes de Seguranca, take three
And the menu, sure ok from my point of view.
Sandwich, fresh fruits, Twix and free drinks
The captain is on the speakers again during approach and prepared us for some thunderstorms around FRA.
Nothing special in the end.
FRA and the 2800 meters "Two-Five-Right" welcomed us back in Germany.
10.05 pm, impressive, 25 minutes ahead to schedule. 24 degrees and the expected thunderstorms around, but thankfully no rain.
Finger disembarking
And a last view to senhor "Torga", nice to meet you also
The screen confirms the reg, well done this time by TP
Not that long to wait for the bags and also the shuttle.
It seems everyone want to be home as soon as possible.
Some nightly time on the less loaded motorways and finally back home.
But wait, the conclusions:
1.)TAP FRA-LIS: Relaxed despite the delay.
2.)TAP LIS-OPO: Well, short, cramped and delayed.
3.)AeroVip VRL-LIS: Shaking, rattling and rolling, love it!.
4.)TAP LIS-FRA: Calm, comfy and superfast.
A supershorty night ahead, repack the bag
and till Singapore tomorrow.
Maybe a bit larger equipment needed for the long haul leg?.

Hi Markus,
Good to read your latest installment. The summer holidays, they seem so long ago! You have some lovely photographs in your report, from your approach into LIS, to the city shots of Lisbon and of course Vila Real. Well done on catching Aero Vip despite all the problems you were faced with, it seems it was worth it. The whole experience sounds very special from A-Z.
Hotel looks good too, although judging by the landscape shots I could almost imagine a golf course there, surely not?
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): D/E/F is the second row after biz and that means some more legroom this way.

Sounds like my sort of meal too.

sure a nice read for breakfast on a dull Sunday morning... Some Portuguese sunny pictures and a interesting story around the Do228. I must keep this in mind. Portugal and the Do228 are both missing, as well another type which is flying around in Portugal. Maybe I should look into this

Hola Markus,
what an interesting report here. You know I have been to Portugal as well with the family recently (also done LIS-FRA with TAP, what a nice coincidence). And while at LIS airport I saw that AeroVip flight to Vila Real and Braganca at the FIDS and thought to myself "hey, that must be a cool flight to take". And now you come up with a report about it, wonderful
And what an adventurous experience it was, first the delay on the LIS-OPO leg, then the, well, interesting bus station in Porto, the terminal building at VRL, the booking process (I never ever paid for a flight with cash, that's really something new) and finally the flight with the Do228.
Some great pictures of Lisbon as well, it is for sure a great city.

Amazing to see a handwritten boarding pass but looking at the departure airport, it's not so surprising!

Hello Markus,
Another nice report with many nice pictures!
Looks like you had a great trip to Portugal despite the 2 delays, nevertheless TAP looks quite OK, nothing special. The legroom on your short LIS-OPO hop looks terrible!
You sure had quite an adventure to get to your new airport and fly Aerovip, very interesting too see. Have never heard of Aerovip before reading this report!
Love all your destination pictures too, well done!
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): And by far not a real surprise that the outbound is also running late
Interesting to see Condor flying to Baltimore, never knew they flew there

You found a really nice routing on this trip. AeroVip has always been on my to-do-list.
Unfortunately it's too late now as AeroVip has apparently had to cancel this service due to the loss of subsidies.
I'm glad you posted this report to show us how it had been when it was still operating.
Thank you for the feedback.
Don´t noticed it, so it seems I´ve lucky to log this special service.
Greetings,
