Welcome to my fifth A.NET trip report, the final chapter of my second trip report series. This series will cover flying between Australia and Asia- 13 days, 6 sectors, 5 airport lounges, 4 countries and 2 airlines. There will be plenty of photos, maybe a couple of videos, but taken with an iPhone 5 so apologies in advance about the quality. I tend to enjoy A.NET reports with plenty of detail, and try to provide that here. If you don't want detail feel free to skip from picture to picture.
The full itinerary is MEL-KUL-HKG-BKK-HKG-KUL-MEL with MH Business and EK First. This report will cover the final sectors between HKG and MEL.
Halfway through part 2, I started my u-turn and retraced my steps for the trip back to Australia. As such this report will be lighter and I’ll try avoid coving old ground. I’ll be focussing on elements unique to these sectors. If you want more detail, please read the previous reports in this series.
Map of the series with this report in red, thanks to Great Circle Mapper
Returning home with MH
I can’t think of an airline that’s taken me home more often than MH over the years, so it’s certainly fitting that they once again get to do the honours.
Kicking off from where part two finished, my phone alarm burst into life at about 5:30am, then my wake up call came in at 5:45am. The plan was to make the 6am shuttle bus which was the first of the day, but checkout took a little longer than expected so the bus left without me. Instead of waiting I just shelled out the HKD $45 for the taxi to the airport mainly because there was one free and ready to go.
The ramp to departures at 6:15am
I proceeded direct to check-in as I was a little later checking in than usual (so far I've checked in right on opening each time...). There were no other people for the Golden Club Class line so I jumped straight in.
The agent was very efficient. Apparently there was someone sitting next to me but she helped move me to another window seat very quickly. I was given an invite to 'The Traveler’s Lounge' and my thoughts were here we go, another cheap and basic lounge that’s probably crowded.
Check in scenes
Boarding pass issued
I got to the Traveller’s Lounge entry at about 6:40am, and what I found have a striking resemblance to something I’ve seen before...I’m thinking the SQ Silver Kris Lounge at Changi.
Similar seats, similar use of marble, no view of the tarmac and dim lighting. It wasn’t the Golden Lounge at KUL, or an EK lounge but it was a lounge and it was adequate.
The food selection was a few Asian dishes- I was happy with the Singapore noodles, then there were a few sandwiches- the egg ones were quite agreeable. I was still feeling a bit flat and probably dehydrated from the previous day so just went through a few bottles of water. I was happy working on my laptop, then proceeded to the gate at around 7:55am, 10 minutes before boarding.
Dragonair being pushed back with the tail of my ride to KUL visible
9M-MKE, take me to KUL
These old A330s have really grown on me since the end of the trip. Lots of shortcomings, the new A330 would be just the ticket, but there’s definitely some nostalgia to them which doesn’t make them overly unpleasant to fly in.
If we were at MEL 5 minutes before boarding time the gate would be empty, but at HKG you have to admire just how organised they are
I got into my usual spot of #1 for the J line, while the Y line started to build
A sign was put up (not easily visible due to the glare) to invite priority boarding for those needing assistance.
Quick facts: First flight was on 21/03/1995. This aircraft is 17.7 years old. It was delivered on 2/4/1995.
Scheduled / Actual Departure (gate): 8:45am / 8:46am UTC+8
Scheduled / Actual Arrival (date): 12:35pm / 12:38pm UTC+8
Flight Time (gate to gate) / Scheduled: 3h52m / 3h50m

I was directed to my seat by the team
Onboard and seated in 5K
The classic view from my seat shot
Coming around to determine welcome drink preferences
Menu for last night’s flight from KUL
And for today
It appeared that most cargo wasn’t on yet
I was surprised at 8:27AM, 18 minutes prior to departure to see the forward door being closed.
Door closed
Then a quick count- only 6 in the J cabin today with 4 cabin crew and an inflight supervisor (now called cabin crew in charge- does that subtle name change mean that more ‘helping out’ is expected?). Love a light load.
Right on time we started pushback, and the safety video was played. The screen was in a bad way, the people in the video would go from being black and white to having skin with a nice blueish hue. And plenty of crackles and pops in the audio. If you don't believe me watch the video report for this flight where I've included a snippet of the new video. The new video has really grown on me, and I now rate it very highly- streets ahead of the old one. The third viewing is lucky it seems.
Empty cabin
On the way to the runway
Hong Kong Airlines, with an American Airlines jet in the hanger
We soon departed on runway 07R and the views on climbout were pretty good
Cabin during climb
And above the clouds
The Select media players were given out individually today (rather than on a trolley) and I was called by name on all encounters. The crew hadreally brought their A-game to the flight, although the light load helps.
Sadly, nobody had bothered to update the content for December (it was the 8th) so I’d already watched the best of the system
Putting on some music
The brunch service was pretty casual which is good on a 3 hour flight when you have no bars to visit or showers to use. Or even built-in AVOD freshly updated for December to be viewing.
Orders were taken and I opted for the pasta
Starting with some tea or coffee- I like the plunger that MH uses
And then came the tray with some fresh fruits and yogurt
The bread basket came around with all your favourite breakfast pastries
Then came the drinks trolley- I decided to make it a champagne breakfast, so they needed to go back to the galley for to pop the cork or something
During the meal
The cabin crew member in charge came to my seat and said “Mr. Xflksjflksdfkl?” I was somewhat confused. “Oh hang on, you’re Mr. Themit9. Unfortunately we don’t have any servings of the pasta left, can I offer you something else?”
It was a shame but I had my other eye on the Deep Fried Basa Fish noodles, which were promptly brought over
Champagne, coffee, noodles, all in an empty J cabin. Life complete.
The noodles were first class, from the perfect fish to the delicate flavours of the ginger mushroom oyster sauce- it tasted fantastic. I was glad to have these over the pasta actually.
Putting on the TV- seeing the same Modern Family episode on MH for about the 3rd time.
Of course, some of the best IFE is out the window- but we all know that
Pudding for dessert- I don’t think it was the rice pudding so not sure what it was. It could have been the rice pudding I guess. My knowledge of Asian desserts is poor at best.
Either way it was delicious
The meal service was out of the way, so I could watch the IFE and enjoy my beverages.
The cabin after a quick lav trip
As we got closer to Malaysia, it was ice cream time
The crew constantly kept topping up drinks right up until the top of descent- and I was even offered more juice as the headsets were being collected for landing
Premium lane cards came around
Descent
As close to time as possible, welanded on Runway 32R and taxied to the terminal building. All in all, what a great flight.
KLIA would have to just about be my favourite airport experience, and the justification for this was on display again today.
Passing through the premium lane was a breeze, and my bag was, as usual waiting for me on the carousel. From there it was a short walk to the meeting point for the Pan Pacific hotel- where I would be staying until MH 129 to MEL tomorrow. You can walk easily to the Pan Pacific, but with my 3 bags getting heavier with airline goodies and other purchases I took up the offer of a golf buggy transfer.
My room was newly renovated and on the top floor
The renovations have gone down very well. Welcome message.
If there’s better evidence of the high profit margins on hotel mini bars, I’d like to see it
View from the room- sadly not of the runway this time
The Pacific Club experience really makes this hotel, and it’s an excellent way to sit back and take the time to reflect on the trip that was.
IMPRESSIONS OF MH 79
Check-in: No line, agent friendly and gave me a new seat without a neighbour. Top marks.
Departure: HKG needs to get a premium lane but otherwise efficient, smooth and organised
Lounge: Ticked the boxes, a comfortable place to relax that wasn’t too over the top
Onboard: Old aircraft that should be on its way out. Otherwise the crew did an excellent job.
Food and Beverages: First order not available despite light load, but the whole meal was excellent.
Arrival: KLIA could be my favourite airport
MH did a great job- of course the light load made life easy but if every flight could be at this level I’d be happy.
---
5:45AM- time to move on out
It might be a little crazy to get up this early for a 10:15am flight when you’re staying at the airport, but who wants to rush for the last sector?
The Pan Pacific has a nice offering of wake up coffee or tea delivered to the room- sadly this was somewhat out of sync with the coffee coming just before the wake up call, meaning you wake up to someone knocking on the door instead.
Fighting off sleep
After a quick breakfast in the Pacific Club I was on the buggy back to the terminal building
The previous J check in has been replaced with a more scaled back version setup over a larger space. The large space accommodated J class, F class (which is on very few routes now), along with Enrich Platinum, Gold and Silver members. The comfortable couches with drinks fridges had all but gone, and the stylish ‘special’ desks were all but replaced with something more traditional. It was a shame as the previous offering was something quite special.
Entry to the premium check in area
The former human gatekeeper was replaced with this
The old system where a ticket was given and you sit and wait for your number to be called is now just line up at any desk marked ‘Business Class’.
As always the other lines moved faster while my desk was slower due to passengers with special requests. Even Y-style queuing ropes feeding to multiple desks would be better than this.
Boarding pass
With check-in done, it was straight to the MH Golden Lounge
Views of the lounge
I had some items to sort out in the business centre, where there were great writing kits
Sadly many destinations featured are no longer served by MH-such as Dubai, South Africa and Buenos Aires.
More lounge views as the sun comes up
FIDS
PH-BVC arrived from AMS as KL 811, and was quickly turned around and sent back as KL 812
Hearing and seeing the KL crew in the airport coffee shops made me want to go back to Europe- it’s on the ‘next trip’ list
Lounge dining
I headed to the gate about an hour before departure
The ride to MEL, 9M-MTC
I was admitted to the gate holding area quickly and easily and took a seat close to the action.
The ground staff opened the doors then left leaving the jetways unguarded for anyone to walk through. That wouldn't be allowed in Australia.
There were plenty of other plane spotters in the area takingphotos of everything in the gate lounge and the aircraft
Boarding began at around 9:45am for passengers needingassistance through Door B, and J class could board through Door A.
The last walk down the jetway for the trip to 9M-MTC
Quick facts: First flight was on 26/05/2011. This aircraft is 1.5 years old. It was delivered on 10/06/2011 after using a test rego ofF-WWYJ
Scheduled / Actual Departure (gate): 10:15am / 10:23am UTC+8
Scheduled / Actual Arrival (date): 9:10pm / 9:07pm UTC+11
Flight Time (gate to gate) / Scheduled: 7h55m / 7h44m

I arrived at the door and was directed to 6K
View from my seat
A welcome guava was promptly delivered, by this point I had a seat mate for the first time on the trip
The J cabin filled quickly
Soon every seat was taken, it was shame to be in such a heavily loaded cabin for the last flight of the trip
Pushback
The safety video was the old ‘safety to children’ video, showing that the new video was created only recently. I was hoping to capture the entire new video for YouTube but never mind.
Passing an MH A380 with the livery missing something...
Take off was a few minutes late waiting for some traffic, but we soon lifted off on Runway 32R
Crossing the coast of Malaysia- see you again soon
Amenity kits and headphones distributed
Putting on some music on Select
Brunch started with a tea and coffee service
Turning to the menu revealed that the offerings were similar to my flight on MH 129 back in April
For main I had to order the Nasi Lemak. It seemed to be very popular today but luckily with the full cabin there was plenty in stock.
First course- the MH classic of fruit, yogurt and thebreakfast pasty basket (I have all their service routines worked out now)
Dining as we track towards Jakarta
Champagne, water and coffee
Nasi Lemak- as good as always
Cabin during the service
To finish...tiramisu
With this design of seats, the person in the window getssomewhat wedged in if the person seated next door wishes to sleep or put theirfeet up, so whenever my seat mate got up I jumped at the chance to walk and use the toilet.
Galley after the meal
Sunset began
Later on, ice cream came around
Almost at the coast of Australia
And crossing the coast of the best country in the world (maybe I’m a little biased)
Like the last flight, nobody had bothered to update the IFE again for December, so I decided to pull out the laptop and do some trip reporting.
Working on the EK report
The seat is a great workstation with the power point easy to reach, a tray table big enough to hold my laptop and a comfortable seat position.
The outback
Finally mood lighting is used for what it was intended- to replicate the sky at that time at the destination. This was adjusted during the flight, but they were about an 1-2 hours in front of what was really happening in MEL
About two hours before landing the sun started to come up
There’s no choices for this meal, but here’s the menu anyway
Table set
What else would you have as an appetiser?
Malaysian satay for the last time
Approaching Adelaide
As expected there were no seconds and the main meal was brought
The cold cuts plate was enjoyable
St Peter Island- we’re taking a southerly track today
Dessert- mixed berries calafoutis
Final drinks run
A word on the crew on this flight- they generally did a good job but with a full cabin they sure had their work cut out for them. In a full cabin you tend to lose that special, personalised treatment that makes MH so great...and then you are left with just the hard product- hemmed in by the sleeping seat mate next to you (SQ, Cathay and soon Thai seats with direct aisle access- where are you???). It was still a good flight but probably the least impressive of the series which is a shame to end on. If the load had been lighter I’m sure this flight would have been excellent.
Coffee and a Baileys
Leaving the coast and heading inland- it’s still sunny at 8pm at night local time with the summer solstice just around the corner and daylight savings in force
The inflight entertainment program was interrupted for a ‘helpful’ video on Melbourne. The right way to approach this would be to say ‘a helpful video on immigration procedures can be viewed on channel X’ rather than taking over the IFE and having the video broadcast over the P/A. As an Australian citizen I didn’t really care about the video having entered Australia countless times.
The video started off all helpful and informative
Then when it turned to talking about the extensive duty free options and shopping it became clear that MH was making a tidy sum from forcing us to watch this
And then it went on to local tourist attractions skewed infavour of those sponsoring. On looking at their site http://flyingvisit.net/aboutus.php I learnt that they promise companies that people like me are the “lucrative international traveller” who are “conditioned to buy”. Top stuff.
Maybe such videos are acceptable in Y where everyone wants a bargain airfare...and if flying is to be subsidised by advertising so be it. Butin J it’s a different kettle of fish where I don’t think your average business traveller would appreciate being bombarded with ads.
About to leave the coast and head inland to Melbourne
The airshow chooses some odd places to show over others
Flying over my one of my solo cross-country routes during my flight training
The headphones were collected and the cabin was secured quite early- perhaps they started off early due to the full load. Anyhow, everything was organised about 20 minutes before landing leaving the crew to wander up and down the aisles looking for extra rubbish.
It was time to head under the cloud base
Lights being dimmed for landing
The airshow strangely went off for landing, but it became clear that we were doing a straight in approach via ARBEY to Runway 16. Sure enough, a few minutes early, we did our landing from the north and touched down.
MEL terminal scenery
Packing up
After thanking the crew I disembarked and proceeded to immigration. As my physical being didn’t match the passport photo enough to satisfy the autogates, I had to head to the ‘assistance desk’. This desk was closed which meant the line fed into the very front of the visiting passport line, with staff inviting me to cut in and be served first. Apologies to those visitors to Australia that I cut in front of. My appearance satisfied a real person, and I was admitted back into the country, and went to collect my bag which had just arrived on the far carousel. Customs was easy with me being waved through, but there was no clear line for the express card holders. And very quickly, this marked the end of my trip.
IMPRESSIONS OF MH 129
Check-in: New J check in a real step down. A little disorganised without proper queuing, no more porters but otherwise good.
Departure: KUL was on song again
Lounge: The Golden Lounge would be the best on this trip
Onboard: Full cabin meant MH was a little exposed in its marketing plan of focusing on soft product. Hard product acceptable.
Food and Beverages: Good across the board
Arrival: MEL arrival good- being an Australian national helps
In general as a flight, this one goes in the good to very good range, but for a premium flight this one was probably a little behind the competition. It’s great to rely on the crew to deliver Malaysian Hospitality, but when the crew is busy due to a high workload, you need hard product to back you up. MH will need a hard product refresh on these new A330s in the coming years. I would take this flight again as I still feel MH offers good value for money.
Thanks for reading

Video Reports
You've read the report- now watch this videos. Hopefully my filming and editing skills have improved as the trip has progressed.
Read more about the trip
My new travel blog is slowly coming together, with the trip reporting out of the way more articles on the non-aviation aspects of the trip will be appearing soon:
MH seem to be doing well into MEL judging on those loads. I flew them a few years ago and really liked their service.
Thanks for the kind words IndianicWorld, and I believe MEL will be an A380 route. Every time I've been on this route with MH in the last 12 months, Y has been full.
Another great report, thanks for sharing!
Glad you got one of the newer 330's on the KUL-MEL sector
Greetings
Marc
Thanks Marc, I don't think they'd get away with deploying the old non-avod and barely IFE A330s on the 7.5 hour flight, but apparantly the old A330 has been used on legs to BNE.

Hi Mitchell,
Glad to see the last of the report on here. And nice that it was on MH!!

That was not very nice, considering there were just 6 passengers and he should have remembered. Were you addressed by name on the final leg to Melbourne, in the full cabin?
Quoting themit9 (Thread starter): From there it was a short walk to the meeting point for the Pan Pacific hotel- where I would be staying
I stayed there myself. It is nice how you can practically walk to the hotel from the terminal.

Including Karachi which is how I landed up taking MH

Hi there flightsimboy, thanks for reading and commenting on the entire series.
Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 6): That was not very nice, considering there were just 6 passengers and he should have remembered. Were you addressed by name on the final leg to Melbourne, in the full cabin?
I wasn't too worried as mistakes happen. On the final leg it was some of the crew some of the time...it's one thing you really notice on SQ is how they consistently call you by name- all the crew on every encounter. Although in a full cabin it's a lot of names to remember and I noticed them reading from a 'cheat sheet' when giving out headphones from the carts etc.
Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 6): The tiramisu seems to be missing the dark colours usually associated with it...it;s very white
I do recall thinking that, but from memory it was still pretty authentic. I've never seen the dish being prepared so not sure what might cause that...
Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 6): I really love how you link your videos on here with a screenshot of the youtube video.
Thanks, although I did copy the idea from a couple of other trip reporters. Hopefully more people are inspired to view my slowly improving videos...
Thanks again flightsimboy, really appreciate all the comments and feedback on my reports.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 10): congratulations on finishing this series with a great last part! All these MH J Class food pictures made me hungry!
Hi PlaneHunter,
Thanks for your kind words and for taking the time to read the entire series. Makes it all worthwhile.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 10): I guess I'd feel like an old man during such a transfer...
A nice preview of life to come...maybe. It was interesting in HKG, where those lucky enough to have the EK chauffeur drive were picked up at the gate with one of these golf carts, however, I had to walk and arrived faster due to the number of obstacles to dodge at HKG.
I don't recall which is quite poor on my part, but just flicking through the menu, it appears to be 'Jacquart Cuvee Brut Mosaique Multi-Vintages'. Don't know my wines very well so I leave it up to others to judge- but I certainly enjoyed it...although flying will do that to you.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 10): It lacks red, that's it. I cannot understand why they left it out. Very odd.
On that particular aircraft the blue stripes aft were missing which is odd. Their first A380 was also painted in two parts with a trip to KUL in between. I like you am not a fan- very bland with just blue.
However, I believe it was just blue because the airline was going to be split into two- a short haul airline with the 737s which would be red and called 'mas' and the long haul 'Malaysia Airlines' which was blue.
Here is someone else's mockup of what I'm talking about:
For a short time their logo was just blue, then they might have scrapped that idea which is why the logo on their site is now red and blue again?
For me the old livery gets a double tick, new-ish livery on the new A330s and some 738s is OK but the new livery on the A380 is a thumbs down.
Thanks again PlaneHunter.

Thanks 9MMAR. It was a real shame as they had something special with the old setup.

Nice concluding report. Thanks for posting.
Quoting themit9 (Thread starter): Sadly, nobody had bothered to update the content for December (it was the 8th) so I%u2019d already watched the best of the system
Thats very bad, especially on the KUL-MEL leg. No point in having top of the range IFE if you don't load it with anything
Quoting themit9 (Thread starter): Then came the drinks trolley- I decided to make it a champagne breakfast, so they needed to go back to the galley for to pop the cork or something
Strange they have all the wine bottles set up for breakfast, but no champagne on the top.

I like the label! It's a shame most hotels have such crazy minibar prices. I'm sure if they made the prices more reasonable, then they'd make more money through higher slaes numbers.
Quoting themit9 (Thread starter): As always the other lines moved faster while my desk was slower due to passengers with special requests. Even Y-style queuing ropes feeding to multiple desks would be better than this.
Yes, this MH approch only works when there are mosre desks than passengers. Nothing more annoying than joining a slow queue
Am I missing something, or is the amenity kit handed out in a plain white sack?
Quoting themit9 (Thread starter): Maybe such videos are acceptable in Y where everyone wants a bargain airfare...and if flying is to be subsidised by advertising so be it. Butin J it’s a different kettle of fish where I don’t think your average business traveller would appreciate being bombarded with ads.
Very annoying to get so many ads. I think it's Air China that has a 5 minute car ad before pretty much every show on the PTV. Horrid.
Thanks for following along right up to the end- although my series is a bit shorter than your average effort.
Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 13): Thats very bad, especially on the KUL-MEL leg. No point in having top of the range IFE if you don't load it with anything
How much work is it? The Select portable on the HKG-KUL had a micro USB port, so perhaps you plug in and sync it? Or could you just remove the hard drive and put in a new one? For that matter I don't know how it works on the bigger AVOD system but surely it wouldn't take long...
Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 13): Strange they have all the wine bottles set up for breakfast, but no champagne on the top.
Having done 6 flights in MH J this year I think I'm across all their service routines (and can also scarily enough follow along with the inflight announcements) and I think it's a cookie cutter approach where the cart is loaded the same regardless of time of day, as is the overall meal service.
Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 13): I like the label! It's a shame most hotels have such crazy minibar prices. I'm sure if they made the prices more reasonable, then they'd make more money through higher sales numbers.
Never seen anything like it, I was tempted but I had my own minibar in my bag thanks to EK First on the previous day...
Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 13): Am I missing something, or is the amenity kit handed out in a plain white sack?
Yes it's a plain white but slightly see through sack sealed with a 'Golden Club Class' blue sticker. Guessing this to seal the bags to prevent individual articles inside from going missing or being used, and they wanted something more classy than clear plastic?
Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 13): Very annoying to get so many ads. I think it's Air China that has a 5 minute car ad before pretty much every show on the PTV. Horrid.
I don't think the bean counters think through what it's actually like in the real world to be forced to watch something. This aspect was quite poor on MH, as on the AVOD you would be randomly shown a still image ad (luckily only promoting MH...for now) that couldn't be closed for around 3-5 seconds, then before each film or TV show there was a 2 or so minute ad for mobile telephone service. Made it annoying for trying to work out what episode you'd already seen. Then of course there was the arrival video, I really hope tourists don't base what to do in MEL on that. To be fair, SQ had some property investment thing on their AVOD, but EK seems to manage without and we all know where ICE stands in the rankings.
Thanks again Gabriel.
