INTRODUCTION

Some months ago, when browsing through some route news, I suddenly stopped at a post, where the crew training and promotional flights of the new LOT 787 were published.
After checking out which routes are being flown with the new plane, I immediatly started to look for suitable dates and it didnt take a minute to convince my brother to join me on this trip.
As the fares for a return trip just on LOT were a bit too high for my liking, I booked a late morning good old Lufthansa flight to WAW with the return the next morning on the LO 787.
Cause the flight back is scheduled to leave at 7h25 on a sunday morning, I booked the Courtyard Marriott hotel, which was only a short walk from the terminal in Warsaw away and with only about 60 EUR a night for two persons, the value was excellent.
Sometime in december when reading all the problems going on at Lot Polish Airlines, I was actually a bit worried if my flight would still be operated by the 787 in January, but in the end everything was fine and even better.
So lets fast forward now some months to a rainy cold saturday morning in Germany.

The simple map for this weekend, thanks to Gcmaps

It was almost Markus like, when I got up early morning to catch the regional train to Frankfurt, where we arrived already at 07h20.
After checking in our baggage, the first stop of the day was the B-Gates Senator lounge for a breakfast.
The views there are a lot better than in the other lounges around.
After some lounging time there, we moved on to the new A Senatorlounge, which was quite full and it was even hard to find a table.
As our boarding was scheduled to start at 11:00, we went some 20mins early to the gate, where only a few people were already waiting, which means that the load to Warsaw would be a light one, and in the end there was indeed only a load factor of about 40%.

THE FLIGHT
FRA-WAW
Lufthansa
A321 D-AIRM

Boarding was soon completed and we started out scenic taxi to the active runway.
There were quite a lot of interesting sights on the way as usual in Frankfurt.

For our friends from Greece

The stupid LH ads:

Is that you, Wilco?

After a short wait at the runway, the 2 CFM engines started to rumble and we made our way into the german winter mist.

Luckily the weather over the clouds was nice as usual and perfect to run away from the nasty winter weather, even if it was only for a short time.

Soon after the seatbelt sign was switched off, the crew started with their service, but what is on offer today?
With LH, you never know what you get on shorthaul, but today it was........tadaaaa, the standard „Käsebrot“ cheese sandwich.
To wash down the dry and not tasty sandwich, I got a bottle of Warsteiner, which was perfectly chilled down.

Nice and empty cabin

The rest of the flight was uneventful and we landed in Okecie after a flighttime of about 1h35.

Dont want to be in there

Some LOT metal

Qatar Airbus

Some more LOT metal, eh, composits

During deboarding the F/A in the backgalley opend the door and the wind coming in there was just freezing, so we agreed on closing it again, as she didnt like the cold weather as well.

First sight of LO 787

Upon arrival in Warsaw, we collected our luggage and walked over the short way to our hotel, which was located basically just on the other side of the street in front of the terminal.
After checking in there and dropping our stuff in the room, we soon went to the local train station to get to downtown Warsaw to have a look around.

The hotel room in the Courtyard Marriott

The hotel at night

The prices there were in general really good, but i didnt really like the town and there were a lot of people with an amazingly strong smell of alcohol. Not really my place, but for sure good to have it visited.

LOT Office in town:

After some time in town, we took our train back to the airport again, but I think Warsaw could extend their signs with a simple „airport“ to let the tourists know where to go, I guess a lot people dont know that the airport is named „Chopina“.

Really new airport train, only 4 pax on it though

Back at the airport we got dinner and then let called it a night, as we had to be up early the next morning.

Back at the airport the next morning, there were like 3 or 4 Wizzair flights checking in and therefore half of the check in hall was blocked by the people of that flights.

As the LOT check in counters were still closed, we went to the ticket counter to ask about the upgrade chances on that flight and after a call with a mysterious person on the other end, the woman on duty gave us green light that we both were upgraded to Premium class, but as her printer is broken, we had to go to the Tele Check in counter to get our new boarding passes.
By the way, never saw an airline that offers check in via the phone, I think with the mobile internet this isnt really up to date any more.
After the check in counters opened, we went their to drop our luggage, and my brother tried to get another upgrade to C class, as we were informed that the load was still light up front.
After another call, I guess with the same mysterious person, my brother got upgraded to C class, thanks to his *Gold.
Without having any status, I'm really happy to have got the bulkhead window seat in Premium.

Not many airports have HON CIRCLE check in, but no FC Check in

Next stop was the security check, where we got through in about 3 minutes and made a beeline to the Business lounge, where we were let in by a really friendly and good looking young woman.
The offer there was not bad and the chocolate muffins were really excellent, almost the same ones, you can get at Starbucks.

Dedicated HON CIRCLE table in the lounge

After breakfast we went down to our gate, where already a lot of guys with large cameras where taking pictures of every angle.

Suddenly I spotted a face and saw that fellow member F. Also got a ticket for this flight after his hassle with LO / LH.
After a nice talk to him and other Switzerland based aviation nuts, boarding soon started and I really got excited to have my first steps into this amazing plane.

Boarding was quite slow, so I had a proper look around the cabin first and I must say im really impressed by the product they offer in C and P class.

The P class cabin

Shiny new galley

Mood lighting

Soon the boarding was completed and the seat luckily stayed empty.
There were two F/A on duty in my section and we got a selection of orange juice and water, where i chose the orange juice. I didnt really expect pre-departure drinks in Premium Class, as one can see it as a good premium economy product.

My orange juice

We got a very detailed speech from the purser of the flight, welcoming all of us on this Promotional 787 Dreamliner flight on Europe's first 787 operator.
Our friends from Poland are really proud of this plane and I must say with that excellent product, they really can be.
After a rather long taxi we got a quick de-icing of the wings, before we did another long taxi across the whole apron to the active departure runway.

De-Icing

Travelservice B738

The other LO Dreamliner SP-LRA

THE FLIGHT
WAW-FRA
LOT Polish Airlines
B788 SP-LRB

As I expected a noisy spooling up of the engines next, I was quite shocked when I realized how silent those engines are, even a lot more silent than the A380, but it was still quite powerful.

Thats why we got up early...no words to describe

As soon as the seatbelt sign was switched off, half of the cabin got up to take pictures of basically everything around the cabin.
I first started to explore the seat and I must say, this is a real alternative for longhaul flights, as the seat comfort is really high and might be even better then some older craddle business class seats.

The legroom at the bulkhead was excellent

Power outlet

Seat in full recline

Darkened window, still not as dark as normal shades

One has to note as well that Premium passengers get the business class headphones as well.

Next stop was the economy cabin, and the seats there are really tight and I wouldnt want to be stuck in one of those 3-3-3 economy cabins on a longhaul flight.

Quite tight legroom in economy

The bulkhead display on the wall

Safety Card

Back at my seat I started to explore the IFE system, which of course was equiped with the latest air show.

The remote control

Moving map:

The selection of movies and TV shows was rather boring and not that much on offer.
The following Feedback sheet was quite interesting and funny, what do you think?

Soon afterwards the service started and it consisted of the standard economy sandwich with an additional chocolate bar and about 3 drink runs in total.

With only three rows in this section, it was quite a relaxed cabin and the crew really made their best efforts for the passengers.

Nice touch to have a flower in the restroom

Beautiful wing

Unfortunately the flight came to an end way too soon and after about 1h20 in the air we landed in Frankfurt where we then did a 30mins taxi across the whole airport to our parking position.

Mainhattan

Commerzbank Arena

I know a lot of guys, who will fly this bird in April

Deboarding

During deboarding, the groundstaff tried to get everbody into the busses as soon as possible, but they couldnt do anything when there came about 40 people taking pictures

NH 787

After a long 20min wait for our baggage, we made our way back to the trainstation and after another 2,5h on the train we were home again.

CONCLUSION

Lufty was as standard as they could be. Same service, same crew attitude, same announcements, but all in all a good flight.
LO on the other side did an excellent job. Fantastic seat, great crew and probably the most comfortable plane to travel on.
For further longhaul plans, i will for sure consider LO if their fares are okay.

*** Bonus section ***

Here is a short review of the business class onboard LOTs 787, as my brother, who was traveling with me, got upgraded into that class.
All photos with the fisheye lens are taken by him.

The airy business class cabin with nice blue mood light

The business class breakfast

Thanks a LOT for reading my report.
Questions are highly appreciated.

Cheers,
Johannes

Hi Johannes,

wow you are a fast writer, I didn't even started my report. Nice to have a chat in WAW!

You thought it was a prison right? I did that first.... But aparently it's an outlet center
Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
By the way, never saw an airline that offers check in via the phone, I think with the mobile internet this isnt really up to date any more.

Lufthansa did that in the past, maybe they still do (for status passengers I believe). It's not that uncommon, but indeed, now that we have smartphones and internet, who needs that?

Haha the lounge looks so empty on your pictures. one could say that for a Sunday early morning the whole lounge was quite an aviation geek meet. It all started when I took my airport shuttle from the Novotel to the airprot and there were already 4-5 people inside for the Dreamliner. In the lounge there were all kind of Dreamliner people. Some that came in with the Dreamliner the days before, flying back on regular planes to Brussels, some other which came with regular planes and wanted to fly back with the Dreamliner etc... Really special.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):

Haha I believe this is not the final version. They only had 4 movies, a couple of sitcoms, and a lot of sections not working at all. That's enough as long as they do the European Promo Tour, but i believe it will be extended once they enter long haul service. That said I found the whole system pretty responsive and good. Better than LH's one.

Again, Thanks a lot for sharing. Will try to also write my report in my C class flight, but you basically covered it quite well in your BONUS section

As you said, it's incredible how quiet this plane is. On the other side I thought it hadn't much power during take off. Lame A340-style

Hey nice report there Johannes!

Great you got on the 787, beautiful aircraft she is. Didn't you like the new shades, because they don't get as dark as the old style ones? I really like and prefer them.

You got the fisheye lens recently? I think you are using it a little bit too much, it distorts so many photos, making it difficult to view the details of the cabin etc.

Hey Johannes,

Nice report, great that you got the experience the Dreamliner. After reading all these reports about the promotional flights I am really starting to regret not trying it out too!

Also agree with you on Warsaw: probably not the greatest tourist attraction or city in Poland, but nice to have visited nontheless!

Johannes,

Great to read another report from the LOT Dreamliner. And with you travelling in Premium economy, the a.netters now have the entire aircraft covered!

Seems like we both visited the same places in Warsaw - all your destination pics seem to be a mirror image of my trip and the sights I saw!

I´m not so crazy about the colour of the seats....picky I know. The biz class breakfast looked good on that short flight.

"After some time in town, we took our train back to the airport again, but I think Warsaw could extend their signs with a simple „airport“ to let the tourists know where to go, I guess a lot people dont know that the airport is named „Chopina“."

Warsaw has two airports right now - WAW and WMI. Whenever I use the teain to commute to WAW the announcement in En and Pl is "the train to the Warsaw Chopin Airport.... " so no will get to the wrong one.
Also WAW is promoting the name heavily....

Warsaw is far from the nicest Polish cities, indeed. You can enjoy Nowy Świat, Łazienki or the Old Town but still I like it more for outings, good cuisine and fun places for drinks!

cheers,

Marcin

Great pictures, especially those of the morning clouds and peaking sun over them. I also like the ones with the engine, it looks amazing. What was your cruisinf altitude?
Funny how everyone ends up in the Courtyard Hotel across from the terminal, but with the early flight it makes sense.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
Not really my place, but for sure good to have it visited.

I think it is ok - some goverbment buildings, some skyscrapers and old town, but generally no special character like other cities. One thing to keep in mind that it was almost completely leveled by Nazis during WWII so when you put that into perspective, it looks great.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Thread starter):
During deboarding, the groundstaff tried to get everbody into the busses as soon as possible, but they couldnt do anything when there came about 40 people taking pictures

That's what usually annoyes me about FRA is those busses that seem to take you on a tour around the airport. However, I think this time I would have beeen glad to be remote parked - the pictures look great.
