Bom dia, fellow a.netters,
welcome to a short report about our family holiday to the Algarve last year, hope it brings a little sunshine into our current dull winter weather.
Introduction and Planning
Now with a child that has to go school one is quite limited when it comes to family holiday planning. I don't really want to go in the high summer season with its high prices and huge crowds of tourists everywhere. Fortunately there are other school holidays around the year, like the one-week autumn break at the end of October. Of course this time of the year a more southernly destination is preferred, so we decided to head to the Algarve in Southern Portugal, a region I always wanted to visit. Some options to Faro were available, by far the cheapest and with the best schedule was the Ryanair flight from FKB. But since this was the last flight of the season on this route we had to find an other option to return. Not that I mind, since flying the same way back is something I usually don't like . After looking around a little I found a reasonable priced flight with TAP from FAO to FRA via LIS and booked that.
So in the end our route looked like this, three legs to go:
My dad took us to the airport on this Sunday, where we arrived around 1 and a half hour before departure time. It was a complete mess in the check-in hall, oh dear, looks like we weren't the only ones to take advantage of this school holiday week :
Well, what do you expect with three FR flights to popular holiday destinations departing within an hour. And since I couldn't convince my wife to travel only with carry-on this time we didn't have a choice than to join the long queue. Eventually we were also able to drop off our luggage and headed through security. This was surprisingly quick, despite all the families and only-once-in-a-year-flying tourists.
The inbound flight from FAO was delayed a few minutes, and even before it arrived boarding was called for our flight. As usual we had priority, so no need to play the crazy queuing game and we were out on the apron among the first passengers. My wife complained since we had to wait a few minutes there with a rather cold wind blowing, but I explained her that this is all part of the Ryanair experience. Our plane in the foreground, the one in the background was heading to one of the Canarias islands (oh my, 5 hours on board with FR, that would be too much even for me):
EI-ENP would take us down to FAO today, less than two years old, and fortunately a new registration for me:
We secured a three-seater for us, with me on the middle seat (No chance to get a window seat when my son flies with me ).
“Now please take you seats as quickly as possible”:
With the late arrival of the plane and the slow boarding (flight was completely full) departure was about 20 minutes late. The captain was on the speakers with a cheerful welcome (“Hello boys and girls!”) and an apology for the delay. He told us that they had to struggle with strong headwinds on the way here. Take-off then from runway 03 after the landing of an Air Berlin 737:
This gave us a nice overview of the apron of FKB:
The flight itself was just your usual Ryanair flight with the on-board commercial and sales show. The crew however was rather friendly this time, three young males and a cute red-haired female. We bought us a pack of M&Ms (the chocolate stuff, not the miles) to have something to nibble during the flight. The route took us over the Vosges mountains in France with already some snow on it:
Even more snow over the Pyrenees mountains after crossing the whole of France on FL370:
Cruising over Spain then and a little later this airport came into view:
It was of course Madrid Barajas, the main airport of the Spanish capital:
Descending then towards FAO already over the sea with great views over the Spanish and then the Portuguese coastline:
The town of Faro:
Faro airport seen from downwind towards runway 10:
On short final:
And touching down after a flight time of two and a half hours. We parked on the apron next to a Primera bird from Denmark (OY-PSC):
Lufty was here as well with an A321 (D-AISD):
Deboarding in the sunshine, more than 20 degrees around here and a slight breeze, good enough to get you into the holiday mood:
But hey, let's not forget to get our luggage, it will arrive at “tapete 2”:
And indeed, our bags arrived rather quickly, just hurry up if you need a baggage cart, there might not be enough for everyone :
Algarve holiday
Out of the airport we picked up our rental car (after declining all the offers for extra insurance, navigation-systems, dishwasher, and so on) and after about 45 minutes on the road we arrived in the small village of Pera, where we would stay for the next 5 days. We had booked an apartment in a holiday resort named “Villas Barrocal”:
One of our two bedrooms:
Quite a nice place to stay, comfortable, big and clean apartment with everything you need. And excellent value for money, especially in the off-season, we paid less then 30,- Euro per night. First thing I did was to go out to the pool bar and had one of these :
The next days we explored the coast of the Algarve with its beautiful beaches and sometimes spectacular rock formations:
Interesting flora as well:
There was also time to do some cultural sightseeing, like the Moorish castle of Silves a little inland, quite an impressive building:
We were mostly lucky with the weather, just one day it was cloudy and raining a lot. So on this day we went to visit Faro. The cathedral was quite interesting:
Especially since you could climb up the bell-tower, from where you have really nice views over the city and can get pretty close to the bells (I don't want to be there at the full hour ) :
There are also views like this, U2 on final for runway 28:
A quiet corner in the old town of Faro, count the cats:
You also have good views towards the airport:
A nice 757 from Icelandair departing, most likely back to Keflavik:
Fortunately the next day the weather had improved again. A must visit in this area is the Cabo de Sagres and the Cabo de São Vicente, two promontory points which together form the South-Western tip of mainland Europe. There is a big fortress from the 16th century there:
The lighthouse at the Cabo de São Vicente:
These birds have found a nice spot to enjoy the breeze from the sea:
The shoe rock:
In case you want to start swimming over the big pond you must have a bratwurst here before:
Yes, it's the last sausage before America! A couple of German expats had a good business idea here. And of course we had to try a wurst, it tasted great. Only the bread they served wasn't really up to German standards . You even get a certificate if you eat there:
The west coast of the Algarve in general is much rougher then the South coast with the Atlantic waves hitting the shore with full force. But that means that there are some wonderful bays with nice beaches, far away from the tourist hot spots, only frequented by the surfer crowd and by some old hippies and new-age-people:
Just beautiful:
Our trusty little Peugeot 208:
The five days of holiday were over way too fast. One last moody picture of “our” village of Pera on our last evening there:
Back to the airport then and as usual let's have a look at the FIDS at first, no problem for our flight. Interesting to see that there are 3 flights to different London airports at the same time:
Online check-in was only possible for the LIS-FRA leg, but not for the FAO-LIS leg so we had to go to a check-in counter first. Our bags were checked through to Frankfurt and we were handed our boarding passes:
Off-season shows, not that many people here in the landside area:
Really quiet airside as well, especially after the departure of the London flights:
Only some very limited views outside, so let's head to our gate, Porta 53 today for Lisboa:
Boarding started and we were let into a holding pen from where I finally had a first view on our ride:
It was CS-TTR, built in 2002 and flying for Air Canada until 2008, before it started service for TAP. Thick blue-grey leather seats on board:
Our view outside from row 11 towards the tower of FAO:
Alright, now let's explore the contents of the seat pocket. There was a security card of course, note the registrations on it (wonder if CS-TTR and CS-TTS are somewhat special):
The inflight magazine Up:
And a rather thick shopping on-board magazine:
Boarding completed, load factor was close to 100%:
The Captain was on the speakers then, but it was so quiet that I couldn't understand one word. Anyway push-back was on time, followed shortly by a take-off from runway 10 towards the east:
Climbing out over the coast:
And over the clouds:
The short flight passed quickly, there was no service at all, after the safety demo the crew was never to be seen again during the flight. Already on approach:
Views during approach towards runway 21 were quite nice, though not as good as when coming in from the other direction. The Vasco da Gama bridge over the Tejo river:
Once again, together with the eastern suburbs of Lisbon:
Touch-down after a flight time of just a little more than half an hour and at the gate shortly thereafter:
Lisbon airport
Lisbon is one of these airport with the annoying black dots on the windows that makes taking pictures nearly impossible. This was the last view of our ride:
After having something to eat we checked out the gate for our next flight, turned out it be the lucky gate 13:
Another TAP airbus at the adjacent gate bound for Amsterdam:
It was delayed quite a bit, obviously for some technical reasons, work was going on at the stabilizer:
At least in this part of the terminal the windows were clear and we had good views on the apron. Two easyjet birds are parked in front of the low-cost-terminal:
Boarding was then called for our flight right on time, however it was bus-boarding and we had to wait quite a long time in the crowded bus before we were finally pulling of towards a parking position quite far out on the apron. CS-TTG would take us to Frankfurt this afternoon:
The plane was built in 1998 and flying for TAP all the time. It once had a little smell-of-smoke-incident, coincidently also on a LIS-FRA flight.
Once onboard we settled down, with me again on the middle seat. The aircondition was blowing with full steam:
Seat pitch was ok as well:
The Captain was on the mike then with a nice welcome, he was apologizing for the short delay but announced that because of the tailwind we would still arrive on time in FRA. Well, about 15 minutes too late we departed for a take-off from runway 21:
Great views over the city center after departure:
The airshow was turned on, however it was quite often interrupted by commercials and the TAP logo:
Cabin view during cruise, the load factor was again very good, only a few empty seats:
Not the very best views outside today:
After a while in flight it was service time. The crew (3 females, 2 black-haired and one red-haired female and one more senior male) were quite friendly. They distributed a snack box with some fruits and a chocolate bar:
Now let's have a look inside this box, there were two slices of dry bread, one slice of cheese, a little bit of cold cut and exactly one small leave of salad:
All in all a little disappointing, especially considering that they served a pretty nice breakfast on my much shorter flight from LIS to MAD last year on TAP. But well, at least the fruits were nice (pieces of pear). The drink cart came around and I had one last Portuguese cerveja:
After the trash got collected one of the flight attendants came to our row again and gave another Twix to my son, a nice touch.
Another welcome-on-board and more information about our flight from the front office then. Route of flight took us from Lisbon over Salamanca and Santander in Spain, then over the Gulf of Biscay towards La Rochelle in France, from there via Paris and Luxembourg direct to Frankfurt. All on flight level 380. Weather in FRA was forecast to be quite bad, with strong winds, rain and only around 10 degrees (just your typical autumn in Germany).
At least during the flight we had a great view over Paris, if you look closely at the bottom part of the picture you can see the Eiffel Tower:
One last picture of the wing during descent:
Descent and approach to FRA was quite turbulent then, and we touched down at the new runway 25R after a flight time of about 2 and a half hours, followed by quite some hard braking. After a relatively short taxi-time (at least for FRA) we arrived at a gate at the A pier. And indeed arrival was even a bit earlier than scheduled, so well done here.
My dad picked us up again and after a rather terrible ride (lot's of traffic jams, rainy weather) we arrived back at home and a very nice holiday came to an end.
Conclusion
About the flights, well, first a usual Ryanair flight, cramped full, everything as expected, just a little delay but nothing serious. Our return flights with TAP were quite nice, I was just a little bit disappointed by the service this time, after the good breakfast I got with them last year I have expected a bit more. But well, the crew was friendly, the plane was comfortable and the flights were on time. So not really a reason to complain and I would certainly fly with them again.
We also had a great time in the Algarve, definitely a recommendable holiday region. You have nice beaches, spectacular scenery at the coast and also inland. People are friendly as well, there are nice restaurants and overall just a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. But I think it was a good idea to go there in the low season. There are a lot of big hotels and holiday resorts at the coast so I guess it can get very crowded in summer.
Alright now, I hope you enjoyed my report and I could bring you a little bit of the holiday atmosphere on your screen. And of course I would be happy if you leave just a short comment here …

Hi CaptainRed,
very nice report with good pictures from a beautiful region.
Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): My wife complained since we had to wait a few minutes there with a rather cold wind blowing, but I explained her that this is all part of the Ryanair experience.
Just a matter of time until FR will introduce a "no cold wind" fee.

That would be pure torture.

Hi CaptainRed,
Great job! I am glad to see a report on a visit to Algarve and even more glad that you enjoyed my home town of Faro! I understand your fear of going in the Summer and you are indeed right in reckoning that it is full of tourists round that time. But, trust me, it is a tradeoff. The whole of the Algarve just becomes so beautifully lively and cheerful in Summer that it is just so much more especial. Ideally, in my opinion, the best time is late June and/or early July. Hope you choose to visit again one day!
Cheers,

Indeed, I could use some sunshine pictures after spending a day outside in the cold Dutch weather! Nice report, interesting to compare FR with TP and your holiday. I also find it interesting that there was no hot meal served on this flight, LH does on LIS-FRA!

Aye aye Captain! A very entertaining report about a place I've always wanted to visit. Too bad I didn't take advantage of the cheap fares to Faro from the UK when I lived there. I loved the photos, they make me wanna go there even more.
Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): After looking around a little I found a reasonable priced flight with TAP from FAO to FRA via LIS and booked that.
For some bizarre reason I've never managed to find a cheap TAP fare to anywhere. I'd love to give them a go but I must be doing something wrong with my chosen destinations and/or dates.
Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): As usual we had priority, so no need to play the crazy queuing game
That's nice. I've only flown with FR once (back in 2005 or 2006) so I'm not very familiar with what kind of extras they charge now. So for some extra money you can get to board first?
Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): And indeed, our bags arrived rather quickly, just hurry up if you need a baggage cart, there might not be enough for everyone :
Wow, that looks pretty organized.
Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): First thing I did was to go out to the pool bar and had one of these :
Priorities are priorities! How was the local beer??
I remember seeing these plants near JSI on Skiathos Island and I was equally intrigued by them. Rather weird looking. Apparently they are some kind of blooming agave.
Quoting CaptainRed (Reply 1): from where I finally had a first view on our ride:
What a stunning livery! My personal favorite at last as far as Europe is concerned.
Quoting CaptainRed (Reply 1): Lisbon is one of these airport with the annoying black dots on the windows that makes taking pictures nearly impossible.
Ah yes, rather annoying especially when you have a point-n-shoot camera and you cannot control the focus manually. I guess the trick to set the camera setting to "landscape" and this should hopefully allow you to focus away from the dots.
Quoting CaptainRed (Reply 1): Now let's have a look inside this box, there were two slices of dry bread, one slice of cheese, a little bit of cold cut and exactly one small leave of salad:

Glad to see that you and your family had a nice down south. A lovely destination, a nice routing and a very carefree time of the year to get down there.

Hello CR,
Nice report! I've been to this region as well a few years ago, also on FR ex-CRL. Off season it's definitely a recommendable place to go. Good to see you giving TAP another try. They do seem to have rather thick seats in their cabins, definitely comfy I guess. A bit of a disappointment over that lousy sandwich but for the rest indeed quite OK.
Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): but I explained her that this is all part of the Ryanair experience.
Ha ha, I guess next time she wants you to book a full service carrier. But there's also a chance of bus boarding of course.
Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): Cruising over Spain then and a little later this airport came into view
Perhaps because of a slightly different config in one way or another?
Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): Lisbon is one of these airport with the annoying black dots on the windows that makes taking pictures nearly impossible.
Comes together in the list with GVA and some others. Looking at the photo makes me dizzy

No, even though the name of the beer was Super Bock, it has nothing to do with the German Bock beer. It's just a normal lager beer, but actually quite nice.
I know, I know, though 'slowly fighting the gravity' just doesn't sound so good ...

Hi Speedbird, thanks a lot. And yes, I really liked Faro and the whole area, even though with a bit more sunshine in Faro I would have enjoyed it even more. I would certainly like to go back, so maybe then in June, let's see.
Quoting lychemsa (Reply 4): I find the TAP snack impressive.
We get ZIP here even on a 5 hour flight you have to pay. And that includes flights to the Caribbean.
Hi lychesma, yeah, I know about the service with American carriers nowadays. However here in Europe we are still somehow used to get something on most legacy carriers, especially on these longer flights (>2h).
Quoting roberts87 (Reply 5): Indeed, I could use some sunshine pictures after spending a day outside in the cold Dutch weather! Nice report, interesting to compare FR with TP and your holiday. I also find it interesting that there was no hot meal served on this flight, LH does on LIS-FRA!
Hi Robert, thank you, glad you liked it. And yes, a hot meal would have been nice, but well.
Quoting Widebodyroga (Reply 6): A very entertaining report about a place I've always wanted to visit. Too bad I didn't take advantage of the cheap fares to Faro from the UK when I lived there.
Hi Stojan, thanks a lot. Well, maybe you have the chance again to visit the Algarve once, it is certainly worth a visit.
Quoting Widebodyroga (Reply 6): For some bizarre reason I've never managed to find a cheap TAP fare to anywhere.
It seems to be a hit or miss. I was probably just lucky, already the second time I found a decent fare with them.
Quoting Widebodyroga (Reply 6): So for some extra money you can get to board first?
Yes, exactly. For 5 Euro per Person you can skip the queue and board first. Makes the whole experience much more relaxed. Plus the staff is usually very good in enforcing it. Money well spent I think.
Quoting Widebodyroga (Reply 6): Priorities are priorities! How was the local beer??
The Super Bock was quite good, I liked it more then the 'Sagres' brand.
Quoting Widebodyroga (Reply 6): Rather weird looking. Apparently they are some kind of blooming agave.
Certainly interesting, yes. Nice picture as well btw.
Quoting Widebodyroga (Reply 6): Ah yes, rather annoying especially when you have a point-n-shoot camera and you cannot control the focus manually. I guess the trick to set the camera setting to "landscape" and this should hopefully allow you to focus away from the dots.
I played around a bit with the settings of my camera, but that was the best I could manage.
Quoting Widebodyroga (Reply 6): Hm, not terribly appetizing but certainly better than nothing!
Yep, 'better than nothing' sums it up pretty much ...
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 7): really nice pictures.

Hi Nils, thank you.
Quoting sultanils (Reply 9): Ha ha, I guess next time she wants you to book a full service carrier. But there's also a chance of bus boarding of course.
Well, we had a rather terrible bus boarding in LIS on this trip, with a long wait in a very crowded bus. So in the end I guess even my wife prefers standing a little in the fresh air rather than in a full bus ...
Quoting sultanils (Reply 9): Great name for this eating joint. Did you have a bratwurst there?
Of course we had a bratwurst there. That's what that certificate was for.
Quoting sultanils (Reply 9): Perhaps because of a slightly different config in one way or another?
Yeah, I just checked and indeed these two planes are the latest in TAP's fleet, both were flying with AC before, so it might indeed have a different config. It wasn't apparent though.
Quoting sultanils (Reply 9): Looks really terrible, except for the fruits.
Yes, the fruits and the chocolate were much better than this so-called sandwich.

Well, sightseeing & plane spotting, the best combination.

Nice idea. Although I would think swimming the pond after eating a Bratwurst may not be the best plan of action!

Yes, indeed, not nice. But on the other hand what should they do with no service, no BOB, no rubbish to collect, there is simply nothing to do during the flight.

Yep, doesn't look very appetizing. But well, as already said, still better than nothing.

Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): I hope it brings a little sunshine into our current dull winter weather.
The weather forecast looks promising there. Sunny at 18 Centigrade.
Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): It was a complete mess in the check-in hall, oh dear, looks like we weren't the only ones to take advantage of this school holiday week
Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): My wife complained since we had to wait a few minutes there with a rather cold wind blowing, but I explained her that this is all part of the Ryanair experience.
Good on you to share your wisdom as a frequent flyer!
Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): (No chance to get a window seat when my son flies with me ).
Nevertheless, you managed to take great shots out of the window. Well done!
Oh no! They were not enough yet for a full FR 738. What would happen after arrival of a fully loaded A380?
Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): First thing I did was to go out to the pool bar and had one of these :
The authentic taste!
Quoting CaptainRed (Thread starter): The next days we explored the coast of the Algarve with its beautiful beaches and sometimes spectacular rock formations:

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 16): Nice report CaptainRed. I wonder why FR aren't continueing the flights to FAO for thr winter if they are running full? Nice to get a bit of pre-winter sun!
Hi Gabriel, thanks a lot. I think that particular flight was full because of the school holiday this week. Otherwise during the winter there wouldn't be that much demand on this route. FR are discontinuing the other holiday destinations from FKB like Malaga, Calgiari and so on during the winter as well.

Hi Suryo, thank you. And Algarve is certainly worth a visit, I am sure you would like it as well.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 17): Great overview photo! Specially for you by FR!

Nicely done CaptainRed, good report!
FR same as ever...
The Algarve looks very nice to visit, you sure had a good deal on a pleasant looking apartment in a quiet area. How old is your child if I may ask? Was there enough to keep them entertained?
And finally, TP as well did the job. Shame the sandwich was quite bland, on my only TP flight to date the sandwich was hot beef. Still only a minor detracting point.
Thanks

That holiday resort where we had this apartment is for sure recommendable, as the whole of the Algarve as well. My son is 8 in the meantime, and it was no problem to keep him entertained. Beaches, a little climbing through the rocks, old castles. Plus there are also water parks and zoos and other things like that in the area, which might be something for children, although we didn't go to this places, since there were so many other interesting things to do.

Yes, true, that sandwich wasn't very good, but overall TP was quite good. I was hoping to get a warm snack as well on a flight of this length, but seems that they have also cut down in that regard.
