’Sleeping well, Ariel?’
‘What time is it?’

’No, come on! It was still in the late afternoon as we cleared custom at Hong Kong International Airport! What happened to our layover and our visit to Victoria Harbour?’

Tsim Sha Tsui viewed from Hong Kong Island

‘Weren’t we supposed to view the eight-tallest office building in the world at 415 meters based on structure height?’

2 International Finance Centre

‘Which is completed in 2003 and quoted as having 88 storeys and 22 high-ceiling trading floors to qualify as being extremely auspicious in Chinese culture? Speaking of auspicious, could this second tallest building in Hong Kong just be that way due to the presence of a retail chain owned and operated by Apple Inc?’

First Apple Store in Hong Kong

Philip (OA260) would love the sight! But please, don’t tell me that we missed out the tallest building in Hong Kong!’

International Commerce Centre

‘The one towering over all at 484 meters and completed in 2010 as a part of the Union Square project on top of Kowloon Station,’
‘You know what? You should stop drinking,’

‘As you barely recalled anything after having this pale ale lager with alcohol content of only 5 percent abv,’
‘Very funny, Suryo! I was happy already that I made it on board thanks to Customer Service Officer Joanne,’

你好 mates,

Would I have to describe my feeling at that moment, I would turn to my friend Hannah (Infodesk) who has put it aptly.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 33):
Before you know it, all that planning and hard work is over and all that remains are the happy memories.

So please allow me to dedicate this ultimate sequence of happy memories to Hannah and also to Eric (Airbuseric) because of his similar experience with Cathay Pacific: Jumbo Jet’s Galore! CX In Y: AMS-HKG-DPS V.v. (by airbuseric Sep 20 2012 in Trip Reports)

Hong Kong International Airport

’What do you think of the interior of the new Terminal 2, designed by architecture firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill?’

Overview. Note the ceiling

’Look how the undulating shapes on the ceiling see for wave expression. Acting as a unifying device for the elevations, shimmering curves emerge and disappear again,’

View towards exterior glass wall

’While the frit patterns on the edges of the fenestration blur the exterior surfaces as metal seems to blend into glass and back again. All chosen by the design team to accommodate the desire of Airport Authority Hong Kong for a heroic object building,’
‘Is Terminal 1 on its opposite less heroic then?’

Overview from 6/F

’Well, it is just that the designers made a conscious decision not to give Terminal 2 a big gesture roof, as it would be unnecessarily expensive and in conflict with the distinctive roof profile of Terminal 1. Anyway, welcome to CX’s Superhub!’

Level 7 Overview

’In case you wish to travel at ease,’

Self Check-In Kiosks

’Why not? Abracadabra!’

My boarding pass

’Well, how about this? Hocus pocus!’

Overview from 6/F

’Great! Now we are back to square one!’
‘The restricted square one, you mean? We are now on the other side!’
‘Get out! How did you do that, Ariel?’
‘By saying the magic word to Security Screening Officer Mok and Immigration Officer Kwok Hun. Now we have plenty of time before our flight, ’

The Wing

’This CX’s flagship lounge set a new standard in airline ground service when it launched in 1998,’

’Do you know that The Wing has been completely redesigned by world-renowned London based architects Foster + Partners?’

Level 6 Reception

’The first phase of the renovations at The Wing Level 6 Business Class Lounge was completed in April 2011. Starting from late-2010, there are three renovation phases carried out to ensure that passengers continue to enjoy full utility,’

Supervisor Penny greeted us as we walked to her direction, “Welcome, Sir. My colleague will assist you further,”

“Good evening, Sir,” Smiling Customer Service Officer Katy was immediately on hand, “May I see your invitations, please?”

My lounge invitation

“Can I ask you a question? We would like to visit The Pier as well. Are we allowed re-admittance?”
“Sure. I will just stamp your invitations this time so that you can retain them for your next visit,”
“Thank you,”

’Passenger only for Departure Business Class Lounge according to CX Business Class admittance,’
‘Don’t be silly, Ariel! Come along!’
‘Bonzer! Let’s go to the balcony level!

Level 7 overview. Note The Long Bar on the right

’Apart from The Long Bar, there is another iconic feature of The Wing,’

The Noodle Bar overview. Note the natural live bamboo

’What about the newly-introduced relaxing environment?’

The Coffee Loft overview

’There is a wide range of seating to choose from. Sofas, armchairs and bar stools in addition to the well received exclusive CX Solus Chairs,’

Solus Chair

’Handcrafted by Poltrona Frau in Italy upon design of Cathay Pacific and Foster + Partners around the needs of single travelers,’
‘Not the place to be for us, non-single travelers,’

“Herman, I will get something to drink. Can I get you anything?”
“Beer would be great,”

Beer fridge

’Kirin, San Miguel, Heineken, Tsingtao, Asahi or Carlsberg. Which one of those?’

’A well-hopped pilsner of 4,7% alcohol. Flagship brew of China’s second largest brewery Tsingtao Brewery Co. Ltd.,’
’How about some nibbles to go with it? Like pastries baked on the premises?’

Capsicum and apricot savory or pain au chocolate

’Perhaps hot dishes from new self-serve buffet counters?’

Self-serve buffet counter. Note Italian white Carrara marble finish

’Asian style?’

Fried rice with assorted vegetables and egg white

’Or Western style?’

Pan fried fillet of ling

‘Or are you more into Gangnam Style? Op op op oppan Gangnam Style…’
’Have you been drinking, Ariel?’
‘Who me? Hey, how about taking one of those to help you while away the time?’

International newspapers and magazines

’Are you hiding something?’
‘You know what? Let’s just visit the Long Bar! There are CX signature drinks on offer. All freshly made by The Peninsula Bartender Sammit,’

Ginger Swing

‘A non-alcoholic version with fresh papaya, orange, cranberry, pineapple juice and ginger ale. Or do you fancy the alcoholic one?’

Ocean Breeze

‘A concoction of rum, Peach Liqueur, orange, lemon juice, syrup and Blue Curacao,’

’Bleu, bleu, l’amour est bleu
Berce mon Coeur, mon Coeur amoureux
Bleu, bleu, l’amour est bleu
Bleu comme le ciel qui joue dans tus yeux,’

‘Ariel, if you start imitating Vicky Leandros, it can only mean one thing!’

’Comme l’eau, comme l’eau qui court…’

“I think it is time to move on, Herman,”
“As you wish,”

’Where are we going?’

‘A better place for you to crash out as our gate is not too far away,’

Personal Living Space overview

‘Too crowded! The reception area is way much quieter. I’ll rather stay there,’
‘Ariel, don’t miss our flight!’
‘I won’t. Joanne is around!’

“Shall we grab a drink from The Long Bar?” Herman suggested, “Champagne?”

The Long Bar

“Champagne is fine,”

Piper Heidsieck Brut N.V.

“We are soon ready for boarding. We kindly ask your cooperation to get ready in the designated queue,”

Queue for First / Business

“May I see your boarding pass, please?” Customer Service Officer Rebecca went through the eligibility of everyone in our queue.

One or two had to be directed to another queue.

Queue for Economy

“What is wrong, Suryo?”
“I am trying to find someone, but don’t see him anywhere,”
“Maybe, he is on board already,”

“He is indeed on board,”
“Where is he?”

“Asleep on his cosy retreat. Malaysian Senior Purser Norli and Cantonese Flight Purser Karen must have made him comfortable with welcome drink, hot towel, newspaper and water bottle. Will you feel that way too?“

Smiling Karen immediately presented amenity kit.

Amenity kit by agnés b.

Norli followed in Karen’s wake.

Menu distribution

“Cabin crew, please be seated for takeoff,”

Upper deck prepared for takeoff

At 01.15 local Hong Kong time, after three weeks of memorable holiday, we embarked on our final journey homeward bound.

In flight

“Good evening, Sir,” Inflight Service Manager Share Lin personally introduced herself, “Welcome aboard of our flight. If you need anything, just let us now,”
“Thank you,”

Norli immediately conducted beverage service.

Beverage trolley

“Something to drink, Mr. Akhmad?”
“Can I have Cloud Nine, please?”
“Sure. I’ll ask my colleague to bring it to you,”

My Cloud Nine with a bowl of warm nuts

A refreshing combination of vodka, Cointreau and Sprite with a touch of lemon flavor and a minty twist.

“How was the Cloud Nine?”
“What would you say to Norli, Hannah?”

“What would you like to have, Mr. Akhmad? The supper or the light meal?”

“I will have the supper, please,”

Supper tray set

“What about your main course?”
“The pork belly, please,”
“Sure. Enjoy your starter,”

Prawns with mixed vegetable salad and citrus vinaigrette

“No salad can go wrong with the special blend of delightfully tangy vinaigrette from Australian quality food manufacturer Birch & Waite,”
“What did you order, Suryo?”
“The supper. What about you?”
“The light meal and a cup of coffee with milk,”

Clockwise from bottom: mixed salad with tuna, boiled egg, cherry tomato, lingurian olives and new potatoes, garlic bread, fresh fruit and raspberry swirl cheese cake with raspberry sauce

“No bread for yourself, Suryo?”

My choice of garlic bread and whole meal bun

“Your main course, Mr. Akhmad,”

Slow cooked pork belly with preserved Hakka mustard green, steamed jasmine rice, jade melon with red medlar seed and garlic

“Exciting Hakka classic with melt in the mouth texture thanks to long braising process. Imagine its heavenly combination with aromatic jasmine rice and high fibred jade melon,”
“Suryo, you’ve got to try the creamy cheese cake with its crumbly bottom,”

My sweet indulgence with Dow’s Late Bottled Vintage Port 2006

“Rich, fruity, yet well rounded Port! Anosh (SR103), cheers!”

“Something sweet from Hong Kong chocolatier Schoggi Meier?”

“Can I have Cognac instead? I am completely full by now,”

A glass of Hine ‘Rare and Delicate’ Fine Champagne along with a bottle of Evian

“Delightfully perfumed… what a delicate smoothness on the palate…”

’Move to one side, Ariel!’

Full-length, fully flat bed at 18.5 inch width

“Would you like something to drink?” Karen was immediately on hand.
“Oh yes, please. Oriental Breeze would be nice. But, can I to go to the lavatory first to freshen up?”

All-in-one lotion, cleansing milk and hand lotion by Expertíse

“Do you care for some snacks?”

Midflight snack assortment of Arnott chocolate sandwich biscuit, Pop Pan spring onion crackers, Nature Valley crunch granola bars and Green Tree non-fried apple chips, including CX roasted salted peanuts and macadamia nut blueberry shortbread

“I am fine. Thank you,”
“Enjoy your drink,”

Oriental breeze. Note the floating mini rosebud

“Did you sleep well, Mr. Akhmad?” Norli kneeled to my eye level.
“Yes, some three hours,”
“Would that be long enough for you?”
“That is sufficient for now,”
“We will serve breakfast in about twenty minutes,”

Breakfast menu

“Can I get you anything in the meantime?”

Double espresso

“Piping hot caffeine shot to behold gradual illumination of upper deck,”

Sunset setting

‘Breakfast time, Ariel!’
‘Leave me in peace…’

Breakfast trolley

“Would you like some smoothie, Mr. Akhmad?”
“Yes, please,”

Pink guava smoothie

Cantonese Flight Purser Annebet came for assistance in upper deck.

Norli and Annebet in the act of breakfast service

“May I?”

My breakfast tray set with fresh seasonal fruit and my choice of muffin

“Bircher muesli for you?” Norli broadly smiled.
“How do you know that it would be my choice?”
“Because few people actually choose it,”

Bircher muesli

“How could one possibly skip healthy creation of Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Berner?”
“What about yoghurt?”

Swiss premium blueberry yoghurt

“For its well-known exceptional taste and one-of-a-kind creaminess in Europe? Yes, please,”
“What would you like for main course, Mr. Akhmad?”

Clockwise from bottom: Omelette with creamy beans, breakfast cold plate and dim sum

“I will have the dim sum, please,”

Clockwise from bottom to top: beef meat ball, mini vegetarian glutinous rice wrapped in lotus leaf, asparagus dumpling, seafood and kungchoi dumpling

“The best of dim sum classics with among them mini glutinous rice dumpling to emphasize the yum cha hours!”

‘It’s Chinese style morning tea, isn’t it?’
‘Yes! Welcome back, Ariel!’

“Mr. Akhmad, would you mind filling out comment form for us?”

Comment form

“Not at all. I would love to!”

‘Suryo, what did you do eighteen years ago?’
‘Joining high school in Semarang. Why?’
‘Norli was joining CX at the same time. What about eight months ago?’
‘I had my first ever A.net meet,’
‘Karen got promoted as Flight Purser in the same period after her seven years of service with CX. Three of you have just come together on this particular flight. What do you think?’

Terima kasih, Norli! 多謝, Karen

“Good morning, this is your captain speaking. We will be landing in thirty minutes. I hope you enjoyed your flight with us. If Paris is your final destination, another set of crew will serve you as we will leave you in Amsterdam,”

“Cabin crew, please be seated for landing,”

Norli’s farewell replays every time I open the joint gift of hers and Karen’s.

Farewell message

Mates, I was really blessed to meet both of them and their wonderful colleagues. With great pleasure, I recall meetings with Philippine Inflight Service Manager Joy on CX 272, Cantonese Senior Purser Andy and Flight Purser Audrey on CX 713 and Cantonese Senior Purser Ava on CX 136.

Honestly, I have to dig deeper into the memories to recall how unpleasant my encounter was with the red phantom. It did not matter anymore. Not at all!

People, they make an airline and I cannot agree more!

I sincerely hope that my friend Hannah and Eric will accept my dedication of this final story. 多謝, thank you so much for all your supports!

Hola Suryo!

First of all, thanks for your last kind words, It is always a pleasure to read your reports and look at the gorgeous pictures.

You have a unique style and a personal touch that make your reports really special, this one is no exception. Beautifully illustrated with some very special comments. A tradition you must keep on, they are unique to the site.

What can I say about CX? I have never tried them and your report really presents a great airline with very special touches, the only thing that does not fit, IMO, is the amenity kit, looks too modernly stylished to fit into such an elegant and glamorous cabin.

I am a big fan of your reports, so please keep them coming.

Hi Suryo!

Great trip as usual! Even a 21 year old 747 looked in good condition!
I have always been a great fan of the CX business class. As usual it looks like everything went smooth.
Lovely gift from the crew. Usually the crew can make or break a journey but the CX crew is just a class apart.
Never read a report with a bad experience on CX (service wise).

Thanks for the lovely gesture of mentioning all of us. Appreciate it.

Hey Suryo!

Lovely read. Your reports are well worth the effort you must certainly put in with the additional personal touches.

The drinks on CX look unreal. Definition of differentiation! I laughed aloud when you mentioned Gagnman Style haha.

Please, keep up the good work for our enjoyment. Always a delight.

Best, and Happy New Year!

HI Suryo,

Great report about CX!
The first lounge you visited looks indeed amazing and the offer seems to be more than enough for a business lounge.
I am also impressed by the variety of cocktails they serve on board.

Thanks a lot for sharing this great report.

One or two had to be directed to another queue.

Ha, ha. There are always a few chancers. Its like all the people who come forward when they call those in need of assistance or travelling with small children (who are often in their late teens).

“Something sweet from Hong Kong chocolatier Schoggi Meier?”

No, thank you. Too sweet.

Can I have Cognac instead?

That's more like it. Cheers!

"Semoga berjumpa lagi."

What a lovely gesture and a nice thing to say. Once again the CX crew shone and made your journey a pleasant one, making the red dragon a distant memory. But I am still not sure about the cabin layout- it reminds me too much of battery farming or call centres.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 4):
If Paris is your final destination,

Is CX able to sell seats on the AMS-CDG sector or does the bilateral not permit it? It would be a nice opportunity for someone who wanted to do a trip on the 747 without going long haul, a bit like SQ's MAN-MUC on the 777.

欢迎你 It has been a pleasure following your adventures, memories of childhood, journeys through the outback and time in the South West of WA. It is I who say "Terima kasih, Suryo."

Hi Suryo!

Thanks for another fantastic report with fantastic pictures !

The lounges look very nice and good to see Kirin Ichiban in there, one of my favorites! Tsingtao is very good too.

The seat looks a bit narrow but it's probably okay. Very nice that you got seats on the upper deck! That's the best place to be in business class.

Meals look okay but not quite my taste.

I agree with you that the crew is the one that makes the biggest difference if a flight is great or average. You seemed to have some great flight attendants taking care of you on this flight!

Looking forward VERY much to your next report

Thanks again for taking the time to write this series and my mention in your acknowledgments.

Hallo Suryo

Great trip report, nice to see you made it home well!
CX looks to have a good product, despite I'm not a fan of herringbone seating
Quite confusing to see CDG 2 times on the HKG FIDS

Hello Suryo

Great final installment of your epic trip. I enjoyed that.

Cathay Pacific is certainly an amazing airline. In particular, I think it's nice how they show you a tray with all the meal options to choose from. I also like the style of their lounges, although when I was passing through Hong Kong in the late evening the lounges were rather crowded, with barely any place left to sit.

Thanks for sharing with us Suryo. So what's the next adventure going to be?

Bapak/Meneer Suryo

It is always an enjoyment to read your TR. I am hoping I will be able to try their premium economy all the way to AMS one day ( I am not as KAYA RAYA like you) if they offer this product.

Hello Suryo,

With great pleasure have I savoured this grand finale of another epic series of you. Your excellent onboard experience with CX makes me remember mine in 2007 when this nice airline brought me and my wife to Vietnam for our honeymoon. Back then, the service in the economy class cabin was exemplary, we enjoyed it very much. Also the transit through it's gateway HKG was a flawless affair. Meals look fab as well as the service provided to you and Herman by this lovely set of crew members. Two    definitely!

Indeed, the ceiling is an architectural marvel. It gives the whole building a calm an relaxed look.

Yummy! I don't think these little bites will stay there for long so organised

Ha ha, you can't blame them for trying. Good to see the gate attendants enforcing a proper boarding procedure.

Great report! CX's service looks 5-star - everything from the meals to the drinks look just spectacular. I'm trying them out for the first time in a few weeks (albeit in Y) so I'm excited to see what they're all about. Maybe I'll do a TR too if I'm feeling up to it!
