Farewell message
Mates, I was really blessed to meet both of them and their wonderful colleagues. With great pleasure, I recall meetings with Philippine Inflight Service Manager Joy on CX 272, Cantonese Senior Purser Andy and Flight Purser Audrey on CX 713 and Cantonese Senior Purser Ava on CX 136.
Honestly, I have to dig deeper into the memories to recall how unpleasant my encounter was with the red phantom. It did not matter anymore. Not at all! People, they make an airline and I cannot agree more!
I sincerely hope that my friend Hannah and Eric will accept my dedication of this final story. 多謝, thank you so much for all your supports!
Allow me this opportunity to express my gratitude once again to all of you for your heartwarming replies in my trip report series to The Land Down Under. 多謝!

First of all, thanks for your last kind words, It is always a pleasure to read your reports and look at the gorgeous pictures.
You have a unique style and a personal touch that make your reports really special, this one is no exception. Beautifully illustrated with some very special comments. A tradition you must keep on, they are unique to the site.
What can I say about CX? I have never tried them and your report really presents a great airline with very special touches, the only thing that does not fit, IMO, is the amenity kit, looks too modernly stylished to fit into such an elegant and glamorous cabin.
I am a big fan of your reports, so please keep them coming.
Salut!

Great trip as usual! Even a 21 year old 747 looked in good condition!
I have always been a great fan of the CX business class. As usual it looks like everything went smooth.
Lovely gift from the crew. Usually the crew can make or break a journey but the CX crew is just a class apart.
Never read a report with a bad experience on CX (service wise).

The first lounge you visited looks indeed amazing and the offer seems to be more than enough for a business lounge.
I am also impressed by the variety of cocktails they serve on board.

Now that this series is over you do owe us one last piece of information....just how do you learn everyone's name and how do you remember all those names?! It is really quite a super power you have!
It always confuses me when foreign airlines offer "pralines" because what we (Americans) call praline are VERY different from what others call pralines!
Thank you again for taking up along on your adventure....I can't wait until your next set of trip reports! I am so excited! I can't believe that you are going to..........oh wait....that is ONE secret I'll never tell!

Cathay Pacific is certainly an amazing airline. In particular, I think it's nice how they show you a tray with all the meal options to choose from. I also like the style of their lounges, although when I was passing through Hong Kong in the late evening the lounges were rather crowded, with barely any place left to sit.

Quoting AirAfreak (Reply 12): I really love the detail at the lounge (and of course, your trip reports!) with the back-drop at reception, the noodle bar, live bamboo, etc!!!
The Wing has set a new standard in airline ground service when it launched in 1998, offering passengers unparalleled levels of comfort and convenience.
Quoting Burj (Reply 14): ...I can't wait until your next set of trip reports! I am so excited! I can't believe that you are going to..........oh wait....that is ONE secret I'll never tell!
Quoting The777Man (Reply 18): Looking forward VERY much to your next report
I eagerly look forward to that trip myself!

PH, aflyingkiwi, Roy,
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 15): Would be perfect if they had chosen another seating layout.
Quoting aflyingkiwi (Reply 16): Shame that you didn't have their new business class seat since I heard that's a lot better than the old one.
Quoting Quokkas (Reply 17): But I am still not sure about the cabin layout- it reminds me too much of battery farming or call centres.
Unfortunately, the 747-400’s business class cabin will not be refurbished on the contrary to the 777-300ER’s or A330-300’s.
Quoting knightsofmalta (Reply 21): I also like the style of their lounges, although when I was passing through Hong Kong in the late evening the lounges were rather crowded, with barely any place left to sit.
Quoting rogerbcn (Reply 6): the only thing that does not fit, IMO, is the amenity kit, looks too modernly stylished to fit into such an elegant and glamorous cabin.
That is fair. Probably, the amenity kit design tends to be more agnès b., than CX.
Quoting Burj (Reply 14): Now that this series is over you do owe us one last piece of information....just how do you learn everyone's name and how do you remember all those names?!
Name tags do miracles!
Quoting Burj (Reply 14): Bonzer?! Um Ariel uses some interesting slang!
Err, it’s Australian. It means great!
Quoting Burj (Reply 14): What (or who!) is Ling?! Oh poor ling...to end up cut up and pan fried like that!
Ling is a large member of the cod family.
Quoting Burj (Reply 14): It always confuses me when foreign airlines offer "pralines" because what we (Americans) call praline are VERY different from what others call pralines!
There is a recent remix version as well. What do you think of it?
Quoting Quokkas (Reply 17): Ideal for those who wish to send email, etc with a bit of privacy.
All for the needs of single travelers.
Quoting Quokkas (Reply 17): Its like all the people who come forward when they call those in need of assistance or travelling with small children (who are often in their late teens).
Quoting Quokkas (Reply 17): Is CX able to sell seats on the AMS-CDG sector or does the bilateral not permit it? It would be a nice opportunity for someone who wanted to do a trip on the 747 without going long haul, a bit like SQ's MAN-MUC on the 777.
Unfortunately not. Moreover, the AMS-CDG sector has been dropped since Sep 1, 2012.
Quoting Quokkas (Reply 17): It is I who say "Terima kasih, Suryo."
Quoting knightsofmalta (Reply 21): In particular, I think it's nice how they show you a tray with all the meal options to choose from.
Meals are served on a low trolley that gives you an inviting eye-level choice. To my convenience, Norli slightly tipped the tray over to show what was on offer.
Quoting Sultanils (Reply 23): Your excellent onboard experience with CX makes me remember mine in 2007 when this nice airline brought me and my wife to Vietnam for our honeymoon. Back then, the service in the economy class cabin was exemplary, we enjoyed it very much.
Quoting Sultanils (Reply 23): Also the transit through it's gateway HKG was a flawless affair.
So glad to learn that CX has been providing the highest quality service ever since.
Quoting Sultanils (Reply 23): Indeed, the ceiling is an architectural marvel. It gives the whole building a calm an relaxed look.
Quoting Sultanils (Reply 23): Yummy! I don't think these little bites will stay there for long so organized
It would not be surprising.
Quoting Sultanils (Reply 23): Good to see the gate attendants enforcing a proper boarding procedure.
No one could escape Rebecca at that time.

Suryo, how good of you to notice and thank you for your replies.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 25): Amazing! Could this be the cover?
OMG. How silly but that brought a flood of emotion back and, I am not ashamed to say, tears to my eyes. I wonder why it meant so much to your mother? I won't pry. I do hope that she is well and continues to be.
Je ne sais pas quoi dire. I like it and was almost (almost) up and dancing. But, I confess, I prefer the original. Perhaps because it has so many memories.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 25): Unfortunately not. Moreover, the AMS-CDG sector has been dropped since Sep 1, 2012.
That is a shame. I would have liked to have eventually tried them out on a short haul without the detour to HKG. But if it doesn't pay, it isn't surprising.
I have a nice memory of CX who helped my mother out when her mother was fatally ill in Hamburg. At short notice they were able to take her there via LGW with a connection to HAM. On the return journey, when I took her to the airport, my mother was a bit over weight - that is, her baggage was.
She had been to the Harrod's sale. At Gatwick the check-in agent queried the weight and said, "Madame, you are a little over weight."
"How can I be?" my mother asked, with a smile and confused look. "I have been to Jenny Craig."
"Oh, sorry. Not you Madame, but your suitcase."
"But if I have lost weight and my suitcase is a bit over, does it not cancel each other out?"
" Oh Madame, you are naughty", he said, waving a finger in disapproval. "But I will let it go this time."
With that he affixed a label saying HEAVY to her suitcase and issued her boarding pass.

Hi Suryo,
time to read your trip home. CX reminds me of 2012, and you know that. The meals look great actually, but I don't like the seats. I would not go for this C-class product. I do like the design of the amenity kit.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): “May I see your boarding pass, please?” Customer Service Officer Rebecca went through the eligibility of everyone in our queue.
As far as I remember they also ask the passport and check that versus the boarding pass in HKG if you can really travel to AMS/CDG.
And all of you whom I cannot address personally for having read my reports. 多謝, thank you so much!
With pleasure.

Hi Suryo,
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Would I have to describe my feeling at that moment, I would turn to my friend Hannah (Infodesk) who has put it aptly.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): So please allow me to dedicate this ultimate sequence of happy memories to Hannah
Firstly Suryo let me thank you you for your kind dedication. Yes, we both took a big trip last year to the other side of the world and went through the emotional highs of excitement & anticipation as well as the sad moments when it all came to an end.
I’m sad to see this series come to a close, all parts of it were a real pleasure to read. However, you finished in style, what with those lovely photos of the Hong Kong skyline and the beautiful airport and not forgetting the faultless service on CX. The food looks divine!
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): ‘Or are you more into Gangnam Style? Op op op oppan Gangnam Style…’
’Have you been drinking, Ariel?’
Haha! Gangnam style in the business lounge…not sure that would go down too well
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): A concoction of rum, Peach Liqueur, orange, lemon juice, syrup and Blue Curacao,’
Looks delicious
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): At 01.15 local Hong Kong time, after three weeks of memorable holiday, we embarked on our final journey homeward bound
All good things must come to an end.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): A refreshing combination of vodka, Cointreau and Sprite with a touch of lemon flavor and a minty twist.
“How was the Cloud Nine?”
“What would you say to Norli, Hannah?”
Well, I’d say, bring me another!
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Something sweet from Hong Kong chocolatier Schoggi Meier?”
Schoggi Meier in Hong Kong? Must be a Swiss connection there, as Schoggi is the term we use in Swiss German.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Oriental breeze. Note the floating mini rosebud
Emmi in Asia? Just read an article yesterday saying how well they are doing, it seems the 4 & 5 star hotels can’t get enough of their products.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): I sincerely hope that my friend Hannah and Eric will accept my dedication of this final story. 多謝, thank you so much for all your supports!
Of course Suryo! Thank you for giving us all such wonderful reports to read. A.net wouldn’t be the same without them.
Happy flying

Great report! I've taken KLM several times on this route in Business Class - let's just say that CX appears to beat them on every level (from the seat, to the food, to the service, to the drinks, the lounge, and the friendliness!).

Quoting Quokkas (Reply 26): That is a shame. I would have liked to have eventually tried them out on a short haul without the detour to HKG.
You’re not the only one here.
Quoting Quokkas (Reply 26): I have a nice memory of CX who helped my mother out when her mother was fatally ill in Hamburg. At short notice they were able to take her there via LGW with a connection to HAM.
How touching, especially when it was about the last visit to deceased family member of yours! How long ago was it? Somewhere in the eighties?
Quoting Quokkas (Reply 26): On the return journey, when I took her to the airport, my mother was a bit over weight - that is, her baggage was.

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 28): As far as I remember they also ask the passport and check that versus the boarding pass in HKG if you can really travel to AMS/CDG.
You are right. In compliance with the requirements from Hong Kong Civil Aviation, CX implements a full reconciliation of passenger travel document check at the boarding gate of Hong Kong International Airport, by comparing the name on the passenger's boarding pass with the name in the travel document, and by comparing the photograph in the document with the passenger.

Hi Suryo,
what a wonderful conclusion to this trip report series. And a really great way to end such an epic journey with a C class flight on Cathay. Certainly a great experience to fly on the upper deck of a classic 747-400.
Especially that first lounge you visited looks really nice and comfortable, stylish and with good offers.

Wow, quite an interesting selection, even though a German beer is missing. I think I would have taken the Tsingtao as well.
And also a good on board experience here with CX. Food looks really nice and generous portions. And I am also quite impressed by the selection of cocktails and drinks they served. Very nice.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): People, they make an airline and I cannot agree more!

Great to read the final installment of your trip Suryo.
The first lounge you went in appeared to have a much more airy feel than the second. Both seem pretty good though and the F&B offerings seem better than BA's. HKIA seems like a very decent airport in general - hoping to pay a visit there (and to Hong Kong itself) a bit later in the year, also with a couple of sectors on CX. CX do seem to have a very strong product and their staff seem good too.

Hi Suryo,
So glad I can now reply to this report. It was a great read, but final instalments like these are a bit sad! However the upper deck of a 747 is a perfect way to end a trip....and that too in Business Class!!
92A...Not a number you'd see for business class up front, but with most airlines dedicating entire floors on the A380 to their J class sections, I think the numbers are now normal
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Not the place to be for us, non-single travelers,’
But such a nice area for Ariel to try and recover from the hangover....Maybe then new Hangover 3 has already taken place in Hong Kong, starring Ariel lol
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): One or two had to be directed to another queue.
So polite of you not to mention they were Economy passengers lol
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Clockwise from bottom: Omelette with creamy beans, breakfast cold plate and dim sum
Hmmm I'd have opted for the Omelette...very surprising no seafood option...I think I've seen that been served as breakfast before.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Three of you have just come together on this particular flight. What do you think?’
Milestones indeed....Some FAs have been at their jobs for years, unlike the trend nowadays to join, see the world and leave.
Quoting akhmad (Thread starter): Honestly, I have to dig deeper into the memories to recall how unpleasant my encounter was with the red phantom. It did not matter anymore. Not at all!

Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 41): but with most airlines dedicating entire floors on the A380 to their J class sections, I think the numbers are now normal
Agreed. Singapore Airlines has got 96 for last row Business Class on its all upper deck Business Class A380s.
